BOOM! Studios, along with visionary writer and director Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Marvel's The Avengers), presents an all-new re-telling of the pop culture phenomenon Angel!
Angel walks the line between two worlds; a vampire cursed with a soul, he's spent centuries battling back the forces that would destroy humanity, in an attempt to redeem himself for the crimes committed by the monster he was when he was first turned. But now, on the trail of the most recent demonic uprising, he realizes that the redemption he seeks can only come with a price.
Torn between his self-sworn mission to protect humanity and his desire to rid himself of his curse, he stumbles across the legend of a demon, a trickster who claims they can cure vampirisim and restore his humanity for a small cost: a sacrifice...a Slayer.
Written by Bryan Hill (Detective Comics, Hulu's Titans) with art from Gleb Melnikov. Discover a brand new, modern take on one of the best and broodiest vampires in pop culture, perfect for fans and new readers alike!
Bryan Hill is a screenwriter, photographer, tv writer, and director. He is known for his work on the DC show TITANS and for his work in comics, most notably his outings on DETECTIVE COMICS, POSTAL, AMERICAN CARNAGE, KILLMONGER and ANGEL. His writing is infused with esoteric principles, which can also be found in his photography and music. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
An OK start to the Angel reboot. The villain in the first arc is pretty lame. Internet demons are never going to be interesting or threatening. I like the idea of bringing in Angel's Scooby gang from the very beginning even if they are being revamped, at least Fred and Gun are coming back. I do hope they don't leave Angel in Sunnydale for long. That would make it too difficult to give each book its own identity.
Jordie Bellaire's excellent modern-day Buffy reboot comic is a smash hit, so now it's Angel's turn to get reinvigorated! What new side of the centuries-old vampire with a soul will we see in this daring new vision of a fan-favourite character? Well... I guess he... uuh... fights a... phone... app... demon? Yikes.
Yeah, this wasn't very good. Bryan Hill is normally a pretty good writer, but I don't feel like he has as strong a handle on Angel as Jordie Bellaire has on Buffy, and his idea for the very first Angel story arc is straight up trash. I am sick of internet/smartphone-based villains in my comics, they are never not lame and it's impossible to make them interesting, I wish comic book writers would just stop coming up with that fresh new idea.
I am happy to see that Hill is bringing the Angel gang back together — Fred is already here and Gunn is apparently coming back soon, too. That promise is what will keep me from dropping this series for now, because I just really, really want a more-or-less classic Angel team roster in a comic for once in my life. Bring in Lorne, bring Wesley, Cordy, Groo, Kate, bring everybody back! Hell, I want to see Doyle in this, too — he was arguably the best character the show never got to fully explore, and this newly rebooted universe could be a perfect opportunity for that. And Gwen, too! That was a dropped character if I ever seen one. I know Bryan Hill is capable of so much more than this kind of storyline, and I am ready to give him another shot now that he (hopefully) got this phone villain out of his system.
Overall, while this arc was definitely disappointing, I am still hopeful about Angel's solo book moving forward. The Hellmouth crossover is next, which feels a bit too early in the game but could also give a necessary push to Angel's story, so I hope this was just a false start and we'll see much better arcs in the future.
Hot on the heels of Boom! Studios’ Buffy relaunch is a relaunch for everyone’s favourite vampire-with-a-soul. If you said Spike, get outta here – I mean Angel, of course.
But, also like Buffy, this ain’t your daddy’s Angel. He’s still broody, still tortured, and still out to save people, but this time he’s got a new supporting cast (some of whom may be suspiciously familiar), and a new overarching mission. Writer Bryan Hill captures Angel’s mannerisms easily, so he’s clearly still the person we know, but updates almost everything else around him, from his darker origins to his aims in life. Even the villain of these first few issues is something that Angel would never have encountered at this point in his previous incarnations, and that keeps things surprisingly current, yet familiar enough to not alienate older fans of the character.
On art is Gleb Melnikov, who I’ve never seen before, but he’s a decent fit. His art’s a bit uneven, with close up panels being very detailed, while wider shots tend to be more blocky and unrefined, but it works overall. He’s not quite as strong as Dan Mora over on Buffy (although there are few people who are, if you ask me), but he does the job and does it well for the most part.
Angel’s in good hands. They’re different hands, and they’re taking him on a different journey, but it’s one I’m excited to see him take – especially with his first fateful meeting with Buffy on the horizon.
The first volume of BOOM's new Angel series has a slow burn approach to storytelling
The plot is unfolding very slowly, while new characters are added and we get a few glimpses into Angel's past and future, and it seems to work. It is slowly building momentum, and I am intrigued to see where things are heading, but if the next few volumes does not deliver things could be dropped on the floor. This volume does not stand well on its own.
Gleb Melnikov's art is not of a style that I would normally be too fond of, but it works extremely well with this title and its' tone, and the art is very horror based, making it stand apart from the Buffy-title.
An enjoyable reimagine of one of the coolest vampires every. This is split between seeing Angel's past and what he's done and his current fight against someone using tech to kill people. While the storylines themselves are simple the art and dialogue is strong to make this enjoyable. Will read more!
- 5 stars and i absolutely don't understand the low average rating on this????? - the biggest complaint i see is that they didn't like the villain but this volume clearly wasn't even about the villain, it's about angel????? - ANYWAY can't imagine not liking this because it's genuinely so good and i'm loving this universe and re-imagining, it is SO much fun and enjoyable - i cannot wait to keep reading these, i have the second buffy volume ready to go and i know i'm gonna love it just like i did the first one and this volume - as someone who wasn't that interested in the angel show as much as i was buffy, i already love this so much more so in case y'all were curious, this IS good i promise, so please read this in spite of those poor ratings anyway - i'm an angel apologist on the show (don't @ me) and this volume already made me love him, like that's my actual baby y'all
I really like the new take on old characters. The flashbacks dispersed throughout the volume were interesting and although I don’t understand everything yet, it has me intrigued and I want to know more. The end section to the special anniversary edition was a great addition and I’m assuming is a little bridge between the first volume and the Hellmouth event (crossover between Buffy and angel). I’m excited to see how Angel and Buffy first meet in this new comic and if it parallels at all to the original show.
Personally I didn’t think the main villain in this volume was particularly complex, however they were very timely. Just like in the first volume of the new Buffy series the themes and choices made concerning characteristic changes for certain characters added a more diverse and fresh take to the story. I can’t wait to read more.
3.5. Probably the highest rating I have given a Hill GN, but I really do not enjoy his writing style. My enjoyment of this volume was largely carried by my love of the series overall.
After some very uneven writing and even more uneven art in the corresponding Buffy BOOM! series, Angel Issues #0-#4, collected here in Angel Vol. 1: Being Human was a welcome and delicious treat. Darker and gorier than the simultaneous-running Buffy reboot series, Angel’s been given better writing, better characterizations, and much, much better art. (My art complaints about Buffy really only set in after Issue #4, when the series lost the extremely talented Dan Mora as illustrator.) There are some absolutely stunning layouts – especially of urban landscapes – plus, I can actually tell the difference between characters by their facial features (which could often not be said of the Buffy series post-Issue #4), and they even reliably looked like their TV actor counterparts!
This new Angel retelling so far is imaginative, atmospheric, contemplative, passionate, and haunting, and gives us an Angel that is just as stoic, sardonic, and brooding as the TV Angel we know and love (and, I would argue, is more familiar than the Angel of the canonical post-TV seasons), but he arrived here by a very a different route, which is being slowly unveiled to us in flashbacks. I’m looking forward to the continuation of this series much more than I am the Buffy series, but am very interested in seeing what they do with the crossover events.
Honestly, it was hard to care about this comic. Yes, the post-season-seven comics got a bit bewildering. But this went back to such an immature and undeveloped version of the character that it was like starting all over again. The comic was almost painful to read as a result, as Hill slowly picked his way through major character points about Angel being evil and blahblahblahblah that I was bored with decades ago.
Things were improving by the end. Lilith seems like a good new character, and the foreshadowing of putting together a team including Fred and Gunn is great. But oh, how long is that going to take?
Decent for a reboot, avoiding most of the obvious pitfalls that the Buffy series walked right into, but nothing in it answers the question why? Why did you need to relocate the franchise to 'modern' times from only 20 years ago? If you can't answer that, you shouldn't have done it.
This was great and I need more right now. I can’t wait for the crossover with Buffy and I love how they incorporate technology without feeling too hacky.
So we rebooting EVERYTHING, even Angels origins and his entire arc.
This is interesting. I'm not sure why it's needed, but I'm also intrigued because elements of this are better than the original, but its also still Whedon so we can count on women suffering to forward the plot.
Absolutely fabulous! I thought I wasn't going to pick this one up, anticipating too many changes for my taste. Glad I was wrong! A revamped story with all the nice details that made Angel's story so great. Love it!
This was a cool introduction to this version of Angel. The art is nice, and there were a couple awesome scenes. That said, it didn’t feel too meaty; as in, it was a quick read and wasn’t exactly memorable. Reading month to month was hard because I forgot what happened exactly last time each time. Still, it was enjoyable, and it’s neat seeing the characters reintroduced here. I think they’re shoehorning in a crossover event next a bit too soon, but I hope it works. 3.7/5 stars
Wow, honestly just wow I really enjoyed this reimagining of my most loved vampire-with-a-soul storyline than the one in the tv show and that is saying a lot!
I loved how we got to see Angel in a whole new light and his transformation was excellent I always wondered why would a 300 plus vampire only change when he sees the "love of his life" and not before like there was so much he could have done. So, I'm glad that this rendition of his character shows him differently and improved in my eyes.
Overall, I cannot wait to see what else the revamp of the series turns out to be so far I have been enjoying them so much!
Not as good as the Buffy re-imagining, but I think there is potential in this. The "social media makes people sad" angle was a little tired but otherwise well-done. They brought Fred in early, and I think she'll be a good character. Otherwise.... we'll see.
It got me re-watching the show. Charisma Carpenter is underrated as a comedic actress.
I’m excited for the Hellmouth crossover but the writing is weaker here than in the Buffy reboot. Angel seems out of place and the storyline doesn’t have the kind of continuity and respectful nods to the original that Jordie Bellaire’s Buffy has. That being said, I loved the early introduction of Fred and Gunn, two of the strongest, most memorable Angel characters. Will definitely keep reading, hoping that the writers come through for the fans.
Huge Angel fan but this book was a little confusing and the story is so different than canon it was hard to love. Maybe ill read book 2 maybe not. We will see
