A book about the personal live(s) of the few people who were part of the small circle of associates during Hitler's years in power. Relations were complex and often driven by mutual interests rather than genuine friendship - and characterized by a combination of fear, manipulation, and ideological indoctrination.
Heike B. Görtemaker not only covers the more prominent figures, but also delves into several lesser-known figures within Hitler’s inner circle and the lives of the inner circle after the war. Without exception, they all maintaned their loyalty to Hitler even after his horrific deeds became public knowledge.
Heike B. Görtemaker approaches the subject with academic rigor, avoiding any sensationalism. However, this can make this book less compelling and engaging to those who enjoy more dramatic or emotionally charged histories.

You don't usually think of Hitler as someone who had friends - but he did, and that inner circle played an important role in his daily life and ambitions.
I picked up this book because it was on a subject I had never thought about before, and I was interested in learning what kind of people Hitler surrounded himself with in his most private life and how it impacted him. However, I found the writing rather dry and clunky, and try as I might could not get invested. Matters weren't helped by the enormous cast revolving in and out of the story.
Overall, not a bad book at all - merely not one for me.

Έχουν κατά καιρούς γραφεί και ειπωθεί πολλά για τον Χίτλερ και το Ναζισμό, αλλά ένα περίεργο πράγμα, μία διαρκής απορία και ένα τεράστιο ερωτηματικό, το πως σε τόσο σύντομο χρονικό διάστημα (ο Β Παγκόσμιος Πόλεμος κράτησε επισήμως σχεδόν 6 χρόνια) ένας άνθρωπος κατόρθωσε και έκανε το φρικαλέο του όραμα πραγματικότητα χωρίς να σταθεί ΕΝΑΣ ΑΝΘΡΩΠΟΣ στο δρόμο του και να του πει «ώπα φίλε, αγάντα, πάρτο αλλιώς».
Τι στα αλήθεια πήγε τόσο λάθος και μία ολόκληρη χώρα βγήκε στους δρόμους ζητωκραυγάζοντάς έξαλλα παίζοντας παλαμάκια με μανία, τη στιγμή που ένας μονάχα άνθρωπος στο βήμα τους μιλούσε για Καθαρή Γερμανία και Ξανθιά Αμόλυντη Άρια Φυλή. Ήταν όλοι σύμφωνοι με το δόγμα του ολοκληρωτισμού και της Εθνικής Κάθαρσης; Ήταν το σύνολο του λαού της Γερμανίας υπεύθυνοι για το Ολοκαύτωμα όχι μόνο των Εβραίων αλλά και των Απανταχού Αδύναμων της Γης;
Και κάτι ακόμα που δεν το είχε σκεφτεί μέχρι που διάβασα το φανταστικό αυτό βιβλίο του Κόρτεμέηκερ παράλληλα με τα γεγονότα που συμβαίνουν στον πόλεμο της Ουκρανίας, τί θα έκανα εγώ σήμερα, αν είχα διαφορετική άποψη από αυτή του κυβερνήτη μου, γνώριζα όμως πως αν «ελεύθερα» την εξέφραζα, την επόμενη κιόλας στιγμή θα είχα εκκαθαριστεί από το καθεστώς. Γιατί σύμφωνα με το βιβλίο, πολλοί Γερμανοί είχαν να κάνουν αντίλογο στη ρητορική του μίσους και του παραλογισμού, όμως όσοι δεν προλάβαν να φύγουν για το Μαρόκο, την Αγγλία και την Αμερική, δυστυχώς δεν έζησαν να διηγηθούν τις περιπέτειές τους, στάλθηκαν στα στρατόπεδα συγκέντρωσης και τέλος.
Η Αυλή του Χίτλερ λοιπόν, το τελευταίο βιβλίο που έπεσε στα χέρια μου από τις εκδόσεις @gutenberg_books , μας αφηγείται την ιστορία ενός αδύναμου ανθρώπου ο οποίος καθεστωτικά και πολιτικά στηριζόμενος και φυσικά οικονομικά σθεναρά υποστηριζόμενος από την ελίτ της Γερμανικής κοινωνίας, βρέθηκε σε ένα διάστημα 10 χρονών σιγά σιγά κι αθόρυβα να κινεί τη Βαρβαρότερη Στρατιωτική Μηχανή της Ανθρωπότητας. Και αν δεν είχε εκείνη τη μεγαλομανία να καταπιαστεί με την κατάκτηση της Σοβιετικής Ένωσης (πως τα φέρνει όμως η ζωή) σήμερα σίγουρα θα ζούσαμε σε έναν εντελώς διαφορετικό κόσμο.
Επίσης, Wagner σε ψάχνουμε εσένα και τις νότες σου. ΝΑΙ ΚΑΙ ΤΙΣ ΝΟΤΕΣ ΤΟΥ ΔΕΝ ΚΑΤΑΛΑΒΑ!

Author Heike B Görtemaker published the book “Hitler’s Court: The Inner Circle of The Third Reich and After” in 2021. She has published six books, with this book released within the past week.
I received an ARC of this book through https://www.netgalley.com in return for a fair and honest review. I categorize this book as ‘G’. This book looks at those who Adolf Hitler gathered around himself over nearly 25 years.
Hitler always seemed to have a group of followers around him. As he and the Nazi party were rising in power, they were mostly those that could benefit him. They provided funding, gifts, and the introduction to those in positions of power. Once Hitler had the helm of Germany, the group changed to mostly be those that owed their status to him. They became the adoring crowd that supported everything he did.
Many of those covered are well known. Like Eva Braun, the Bormans, and the Speers. Others like the Brandts and the Morells are less widely known. The book covers Hitler’s close followers from the early days through the end of the war. The closing saga of many who survived the war is also briefly told.
I enjoyed the 12 hours I spent reading this 359-page WWII history. The book gives a behind the scenes look at Hitler and his closest ‘friends’. The Nazi party was torn by constant infighting and power struggles. Little documentation survives and the autobiographies and memoirs cannot be relied on for honesty. The author has done a good job of piecing together the story of Hitler’s court. I like the chosen cover art. I rate this book as a 4.3 (rounded down to a 4) out of 5.

Mir erscheint das Buch fundiert recherchiert und differenziert dargestellt. Die Personenkonstellation um Hitler wird gut herausgearbeitet. Es zeigt, wie totalitäre Herrschaft funktioniert und wie nach deren Ende damit umgegangen wurde - vieles bleibt nicht rekonstruierbar.

Δεν έχω ξαναδιαβάσει βιβλίο μέσα σε 4,5 μήνες! Συνήθως, μέσα σε μια βδομάδα ή 2, ανάλογα με το μέγεθος και τον διαθέσιμο χρόνο, όπως όλοι φαντάζομαι.
Για να κρατηθεί αμείωτο το ενδιαφέρον μου τόσο καιρό, μέχρι του σημείου να λαχταράω να μάθω την συνέχεια φανταστείτε πόσα αστέρια του βάζω. Και μπορώ να πω μετά λύπης μου ότι είναι το πρώτο ιστορικό βιβλίο που διαβάζω καθότι η σχολική μου εκπαίδευση, η οποία στον συγκεκριμένο τομέα ήταν κάκιστη, με είχε αποτρέψει στην ενήλικη ζωή μου από τέτοιου είδους ενασχολήσεις.
Όσοι λοιπόν νομίζουμε ή νομίζαμε ότι γνωρίζουμε την περίοδο της χιτλερικής δικτατορίας καλό θα ήταν να εντρυφήσουμε στην νέα ερμηνεία των γεγονότων από την Γερμανίδα ιστορικό και την οποία, ειλικρινά ελπίζω, να διερευνήσουν περαιτέρω οι νέοι ιστορικοί, ώστε να διαλυθεί η εσκεμμένα δημιουργημένη ομίχλη γύρω από τον Χίτλερ και τους συνεργάτες και φίλους του. Δεν θα κάνω σπόιλερ ώστε να σας αφήσω όλη την απόλαυση της εμπεριστατωμένης αποκάλυψης συν αυτή ενός καλογραμμένου κειμένου και μια θαυμάσιας έκδοσης από τον Gutenberg.
Εξαιρετικό!

Very informative book, which provides a new angle of view on Hitler as a person, which had a broad network of supporters and friends. Especially the fact that those people lifted him into charge and many were able to evade severe juristic consequences after the war is shocking.
Also their influence on the reception of the “third reich” due to publishing their own narrative is more than appalling.
All in all a recommendation if you have an interest in the topic, but a little hard to read.

The intimates revealed, not Himmler, Göring, Speer etc, but the very small circle of people who called Hitler "du" instead of "Sie", in other words his real "friends". Could perhaps have dug a little deeper, but as an addition to the enormous list of books on "Wolf" quite a good read.

The History of the NSDAP (AKA Nazi Party) has always fascinated me. This book (translated from German into English) gives a fascinating and extensively researched account of Hitler's rise to the top, and how he was ably helped and assisted by his entourage, advisors, financial supporters, and confidante's.
From Hitler's political beginnings in Munich (as a talented orator for the NSDAP) until his death in the Bunker of the Reich chancellor, Hitler surrounded himself with a like-minded group of Men and Women, and only a select few are known to the public. Aside from his well-known 'Court' such as Eva Braun, Josef Goebbels, and Himmler, it was surprising to learn of the British upper classes ( and a well-known member of the Royal Family) that were also behind his emphatic rise. Hitler was undoubtedly anti-Semitic but it appears a lot of his supporters denied, denounced, or even played dumb, once the war was over, and the Nuremburg trials began.
This is a very credible account, a very fascinating read, and is definitely relevant, as the far-right's prominence across a modern-day Europe, is ever-present. I would have loved to learn a bit more about the Nuremburg trials, and this book would have benefited from being longer, but the succinct and balanced narrative, made this a great read, anyway.
