He is the author of five short novels, The Long Dry, Everything I Found on the Beach, Bird, Blood, Snow, The Dig, and Cove.
He has been longlisted and shortlisted for numerous international prizes and won a Society of Authors Betty Trask Award (2007), a Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize (2014), the Wales Book of the Year Fiction Prize (2015) and the BBC National Short Story Award (2017).
His work has been published in more than twenty countries, and short stories have appeared on BBC Radio 4 and in a number of anthologies and publications including Granta Magazine and The New Yorker. He also wrote the screenplay for an episode of the BAFTA-winning crime drama Hinterland, and Three Tales, a collection of stories for children.
The Independent on Sunday declared "There is no doubt that Jones is one of the most talented writers in Britain” and he is frequently
acknowledged as one of the most exciting voices of his generation.
His most recent work, Stillicide, is a collection of twelve stories commissioned by BBC Radio 4 that aired over the summer 2019.

Drie sprookjes van Cynan Jones: de handen van de pianist, de vogelverschrikker en de pop, de onbuigzame reus. 3 bijzondere moderne verhaaltjes met een moderne boodschap over anderen in hun waarde laten, samenwerken om meer te bereiken geluk, angst, moois zien in kleine dingen en luisteren naar wat anderen te zeggen hebben. 3 sprookjes die verplicht voor politici verplichte literatuur zouden moeten zijn. Maar ook leuk voor anderen, jong en oud. Origineel en inspirerend.

I bought this book for my son who has just turned seven. He's come to the end of the Ladybird Key Words, collection and I've been looking for something that could assist in leading him beyond the comfortable and familiar world of Peter and Jane: something that would stretch him, but not put him off. Cynan Jones's 3 stories fit the bill very well. The book is of a similar size and feel, being hard back. Physically, it has that 'books-are-important-things'feel to it. That might just be a projection on my part, because it reminds me of the books I looked after and kept when I was a child, and not the books that I didn't: the ones that ended up creased and torn, on the floor with inexplicable beetroot-juice stains on the pages. However, my son was very pleased to receive it for his birthday. It sits proudly on his shelf and not on his floor; so perhaps he feels the same aura in the design and the illustrations that I do.
As for the stories, there are three of them. Each one is just the right length for a bedtime story. They entertained both my son, my daughter (aged 5) and myself over three consecutive evenings, before my son began the slower process of reading them to me. All three stories are beautifully written and have that all too rare quality in children's books of being moral, without being moralistic. I can tell the reader is being guided towards ideas, not dragged by the nose (my daughter has a story which tells her about nice herbivorous dinosaurs and nasty carnivorous ones - it has a hidden meaning. I want to throw it at the wall every time I read it and not because I'm necessarily pro-T-Rex). But the wonderful thing about this is that each story opens up so many opportunities to talk about shades of meaning in the stories. They convey that just-out-of-reach quality that pulls us towards literature, and this captured their imagination. These stories are rooms with many doors. However, consensus was that for work, the hands should do what they're best at, but on their days off, it might be nice to swap about and have turnabout day.

Three stories, fairytale like and very suitable for young readers. Also extremely short at thirty seven pages so ideal if you need something to ease you back into the routine of reading.
Massively different to Jones's usual raw and bleak accounts of the rugged Welsh terrain and the brutal characters that stalk it.
Each tale is metaphorical.
The first, titled 'The Piano Player's Hands', who one day begin arguing and disrupt a usually flawless show, is about the importance of cooperation.
The second, titled 'The Scarecrow and the Doll', confronts aspects of lonliness and friendship as a scarecroe forms an unlikely bond with a doll.
The third and final tale (and arguably the best), titled 'The Unbendy Giant, is a lament towards autocracy, as a once friendly giant turns tyrannical ruler.
Playful, eccentric, accessible. Very good.

Toch wel wat ontgoocheld.
De spaarzame, unieke en toch wat verhullende taal van 'Inham' vinden we hier niet terug.
3 sprookjes zijn 3 (duh!) rechttoe, rechtaan vertellingen, weliswaar mooi geschreven maar toch een beetje te eenvoudig.
Dat ze allemaal afstevenen op een overduidelijke moraal, dat de beeldspraak er vingerdik op ligt en dat ze voorspelbaar zijn, maakte het er niet echt beter op.
Daar laten we het dan maar bij. Onze recensie is immers bijna even lang als het eerste verhaal.
Maar: fotokopieermachine nog aan toe, alvast minder voorspelbaar.

Man, ik wou even dat ik een kind had aan wie ik deze drie verhaaltjes kon voorlezen. Ik vond de moralen van elk verhaal goed en het zet je even aan het denken, opent een deur voor discussies. Het eerste verhaal gaat over samenwerking, het tweede over eenzaamheid en de derde gaat eigenlijk over verschillende dingen (dictatuur, afhankelijkheid, elimineren van eigen denkvermogen). perfect cadeautje voor iedereen die een nieuw soort sprookje wil lezen.

Cynan Jones, niet bepaald een veelschrijver en dan is het begrijpelijk dat er al gauw beslist wordt om eender welk schrijfsel van de man op de markt te brengen. Bedoel ik hiermee dat het niet goed genoeg is om te publiceren? Neen, dat weer niet maar om er een aparte uitgave van te maken is misschien een brug te ver. De 3 sprookjes -die zoals het sprookjes betaamt een levensles bevatten- konden gerust in een verhalenbundel opgenomen worden met andere schrijvers.
Voor wie denkt het hoogstaand literaire proza waarmee de taalvirtuoos je in zijn romans om de oren slaat en bijwijlen uit je lood brengt in de '3 Sprookjes' terug te vinden komt echter van een kale reis terug.
Het klein boekje is mooi als hebbeding voor verzamelaars. Maar voor wie kennis wil maken met de uitzonderlijke schrijfstijl van Jones verwijs ik toch liever naar 'De Wetten Van Water' om zomaar een verhalenbundel te noemen.
Voor wie denkt het hoogstaand literaire proza waarmee de taalvirtuoos je in zijn romans om de oren slaat en bijwijlen uit je lood brengt in de '3 Sprookjes' terug te vinden komt echter van een kale reis terug.

This is a short book with three lovely stories for young readers. The themes of the tales include cooperation and alienation, and the final tale 'The Unbendy Giant' is a meditation on the ills of modernity and the imperialist state. I wish I had a child of my own I could read these to.

Eenhapscrackertje met drie zwaar moralistische sprookjes. Meer moraal dan verhaal en meer metafoor dan plot, maar niet onaardig om te lezen. Wel een paar merkwaardige foutjes in de vertaling. Zetje in plaats van setje, bijvoorbeeld.
