— John Kelly , Detroit Free Press A powerful read. I devoured this book. It was hard for me to put it down. Extensively researched.
—HUGEOrange Publication Review A must-read for everyone. A highly interesting and informative book. 5 Stars.
— Maria Beltran , Reader's Favorite Review Over the past few decades the country has become highly divided politically. In the course of reporting current events, the concepts of conservative and liberal have become grossly distorted. At the top of a political agenda is the demonization of the opposition party. The true accomplishments and values have been suppressed. If this is not corrected, government will continue towards an abyss of dysfunction, disunity, and dissension. It is paramount that the US electorate is accurately and fully informed regarding the record of liberals and conservatives. Hence this book. The author was a Spacecraft Engineer on NASA’s Apollo program and a Computer Science instructor at California State University. He holds a Master’s degree in Systems Engineering from the University of California and has traveled extensively through Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. Among his accomplishments, are ascending Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Everest, and photographing total solar eclipses around the world. Living on the beach in Southern California, he is involved in managing his real estate investments, writing, and spending time with his grown children and his grandsons.

Your party, your vote, be informed!

“This book explores the history and differences between political parties,” the author Marcelo Brazzi summarises in his prologue. Then this “card-carrying independent,” a well-travelled man, who holds a master’s degree in systems engineering, and who has accomplished so much in his careers as a spacecraft engineer on NASA’s Apollo program, and a computer science instructor at California State University, goes on to share with his readers a wealth of well researched information, which, when studied, enables them to come to a cognizant conclusion.

To understand the two major parties better, Marcelo Brazzi takes his reader back through history, reflecting on their past performances. These studies allow us to understand fully how the parties have evolved throughout the years, and examines their instigation, and implementation of various important political decisions which have been made, on subjects such as the vote for women, slavery, gun laws and workers’ rights.

It was also very interesting to see how the various forms of media, with politics, like other things, have used their ability and power to influence the public. The media have the ability to manipulate the facts either way, and in return affect the bias, resulting in a remarkable influence on peoples decisions on which way to vote in an election, and an impact on the economy.

Other important issues which are considered are the environmental impacts caused by our actions, and the increase in population growth, both of which are hot topics at the moment. These two subjects which are intertwined, are having an incredible influence on the future of our planet, and the political decisions we make today will affect the health not only of our planet, but everyone on it. It is vitally important to take ownership of the problems we have caused, and the duty of those in power to ensure that changes are made not only for our generation, but for those to come, and indeed for this planets long-term survival.

In summary, this book offers the reader a comprehensive insight into the two major parties. The author explains clearly, throughout the book, and also in the Appendix, in various ways such as graphs, charts, tables, quotes, and references, how these parties have evolved and work. Highly recommended for readers who have a sincere interest in politics.

‘Liberals are the agents of change and progress’

California author Marcelo Brazzi earned his degree in systems engineering from the University of California and served as a spacecraft engineer on NASA’s Apollo program. He has been a computer science instructor at California State University, and has enhanced his perspective of the world through his extensive travels, and as a photographer of total solar eclipses from such vantages as Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Everest.

It would be difficult to imagine a more appropriate time for this insightful book about political dysfunction in America to be placed before the electorate! Marcelo Brazzi leads the charge to correct the status quo of our two party system and in doing so, provides an illuminating dissertation about government rule, historically and currently. The tenor of his messages is well set in his Prologue, in which he state, ‘It is safe to say world history before the twentieth century is not well-known. There seems to be little appreciation of how we have progressed form the world of illiteracy to the magical world of DNA, democracy, and drive through wedding chapels. The historical record is one of humans constantly seeking to improve their freedoms, their standard of living, and true justice. The leaders of this intellectual and cultural revolution were explorers, scientists, writers, entrepreneurs, and social liberals. For the past 400 years, humanity has been on a slow but relentless migration from the old conservative world of kings and slaves to a world of liberties and popular rule. This book sheds light on how we got here.’

And with that pungent prelude, Marcelo discusses how we view political candidates and the parties they represent – how dysfunctional that electoral system has become as a struggle between social conservatives and social liberals. Historically, Republicans were liberals while today they are social conservatives, and the liberal stance has been assumed by Democrats. Yet he adds, ‘Much of the public no longer knows what the words conservative and liberal mean. All they know is what they hear on biased talk radio or TV, which has no interest in being accurate and objective.’ And those sources include Twitter, Facebook, Google and Yahoo! News, Local TV… etc!

Brazzi sets out to inform the reader about the schisms in our democratic system by guiding us through a significant tour of history, enhancing his points of observation with scientific concepts, psychological impediments, and dictionary definitions. It all works splendidly well as a wake-up call for the need to truly understand politics and the impact our intelligent and informed votes can make. The degree of documentation and extensive appendices is most impressive! This book is not only illuminating as a resource for assessing our political system; it is also an enriching – and entertaining – honest guide that posits the then need for, and possibility for, change. Very highly recommended.

Author Marcela Brazzi was a spacecraft engineer on the Apollo program and a computer science instructor, who has traveled the world extensively photographing solar eclipses. In this book, he looks at an increasingly divided America and writes about “The Liberal Record.”

For a foreigner coming to America, our definition of “liberal” can be seriously confusing. In England, liberal meant generous, kind, caring about others. Which is what it meant here, historically, as well. Only recently has the word been applied to a single political party, a single religious stance, and a single derided social attitude if you’re among the wrong friends.

Wisely reminding his readers that people are more alike than they think, the author shows how easily we are deluded. But “the liberal record” is not written for those who will disagree with the author. Quoting an article titled “Unskilled and unaware of it,” is not designed to make those who disagree with the author more aware of anything. Similarly, claiming a “liberal Christ was able to get God to change his mind,” in a chapter on history, won’t endear the author to the many politically liberal Christians in America—a case of the writer perhaps being “unskilled and unaware” of things of faith.

The book has a lot to offer to readers who share the author’s opinions, and delves into many different areas of ethics, politics, social science, history and more. It includes well-known examples of corporate deception, inviting comparison with political deception, and offers interesting numbers, quotations and graphs. Concluding that “Democrats need to understanding that playing defense does not inspire voters,” the author invites active response, but may have lost some followers along the way.

I wanted more, but then, I’m a mathematically minded, devotedly Christian, politically liberal stranger, attracted by the science and politics of the title, but possibly not a member of the desired audience.

Disclosure: I was given a copy and I freely offer my honest review.

What I hoped to take away from this book based on the description: a history of American political parties and how the divide came to be with well-researched references.

What I actually read: a semi-researched intro book on the accomplishments of social liberals vs social conservatives interspersed with attempts at humor and statements without citation.

Reasoning for the low rating:
1. The out-of-place attempts at humor that oftentimes came across as bad non sequiturs at best and borderline insensitive generalizations at times. More often than not, his "jokes" made me raise an eyebrow and re-read the paragraph to make sure I hadn't hallucinated a line from an unedited blog post found somewhere on the third or fourth page of Google search results.

2. While the author does cite many statements, he ends up summarizing his thoughts and passing them off as facts without any proof, especially as the book nears its lukewarm conclusion on the current state of affairs and actions to take going forward. For a book whose description proudly touts it being fact-based, I found this sorely disappointing.

3. The book is a rudimentary summary of the history of some policies in the US, and does not dive into substantial detail into any topics. If it had been advertised as an overview and not included "Everything You Need to Know" as part of its title, I might have been more open with this point.

I personally fall under the heavily left-leaning liberal umbrella and agree with most of Brazzi's viewpoints, so my dislike of the book does not come from fundamentally differing ideologies. I also recognize it did have its moments. Though the book had its flaws, I did enjoy learning about some snippets of US and world history that I hadn't known about and found some more topics to read up on through reading this book. I appreciated the inclusion of citations and charts (and honestly was expecting more of that).

This is a book that compares decisions made from both the Conservative and Liberal parties. It obviously supports the Liberal side more than the conservative side. It is pretty objective in most places though. It's a pretty short and decent read. It's something to think about.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I may not believe everything that was in the book. I also may question some of the facts that they added in as well. However, it is obvious that they put in a lot of research into the book. I'm not really putting any negativity in the book. Just because I don't agree with everything said in the book doesn't mean I didn't enjoy this.

I really did enjoy reading this book. It was a pretty enjoyable read. It's amazing. Most books like this tend to be directed at people who are in the situation and understand it. This book kind of talks in a way where everybody will understand it easily. I just say that the reader should keep an open mind as they read it.

During these politically dark, divisive and discordant days, Marcelo Brazzi’s fair and balanced book, “The Liberal Record: Everything You Need To Know” feels like a breath of fresh air. Brazzi’s concise and conversational primer shines a bright light on the history of democracy in the world and the ideas of both ends of the political spectrum. In part a crucial civics lesson, Brazzi probes what it really means to be liberal or conservative; Democrat or Republican. With his impeccable research, broad analysis and comprehensive coverage of the political state of the union in 2019, “The Liberal Record” stands out as an easy to read, eye-opening look at the political parties that currently dominate American politics.
Marcelo Brazzi’s background as a spacecraft engineer for NASA during the Apollo program and computer science instructor at California State University serve him well as a highly intelligent, sophisticated and well-informed researcher. In this book, he covers an incredible amount of terrain as he explains the evolution of political beliefs as well as the current political system, which he says has been muddied by misinformation and misunderstanding. He believes that a well-informed electorate is absolutely vital in preserving an honest and open democracy.
Brazzi uses graphs and statistics to back up his assertions and to make clear the true nature of liberal and conservative policies and concepts. One of the author’s main assertions is that a free and balanced press is necessary to ensure effective governance at every level. Early in the book, Brazzi claims that the 1987 repeal of the Fairness Doctrine opened the floodgates for biased political reporting, which he argues is a dangerous and destructive development. The author successfully reveals in the pages that follow how social liberals and conservatives differ in their ideas and policies.
In “The Liberal Record,” Marcelo Brazzi touches on a vast variety of areas where Democrats and Republicans differ in their philosophies and orientation. This book is never dull and incorporates the author’s objective opinions on everything from climate change to health care, and from voter fraud to the current state of the media. It is also a pleasure to read, as Brazzi weaves statistics together with a variety of perspectives to make clear where and how liberals and Democrats are most effective and astute. He dispels many of the misconceptions that seem to become more polarizing with each passing day and advocates for increased clarity in every aspect of society and citizenship. His final call to arms at the end of this book is a tour-de-force and is a most inspiring message. In the end, it offers a dire picture of the fate of democracy, unless liberals and conservatives come to a consensus on the issues of the day.
“The Liberal Record: Everything You Need To Know” is, according to the author, aimed at social conservatives, but goes into great detail on virtually all political policies and social programs. It is an enjoyable enlightenment that reflects the author’s strongly held beliefs. At a time when we desperately need more understanding about the differences that divide us as a country, this book is essential reading.

There is no time like the present to read a book about the political climate in society today. You would expect the book about Liberals to be biased but despite the author’s standing, the book is surprisingly unbiased.

If you are interested in what the Liberal political party is all about, then you couldn’t find a better, more descriptive book than this one. It’s great for anyone that just wants to be more informed on what is really going on. Marcelo Brazzi writes, “Much of the public no longer knows what the words conservative and liberal mean. All they know is what they hear on biased talk radio or TV, which has no interest in being accurate and objective.”

The book makes you think about the political parties and what they have to offer. Many people believe that we are divided as a country because of our differing views in the political race. Regardless of who is in power, it oftentimes seems like someone is unhappy about the decisions being made. We are truly divided as a nation these days. Topics such as education, bankruptcy, healthcare, drugs, media, and climate change are covered as well as other current political topics.

When people wonder why conservatives and liberals are divided, this book goes a great distance in explaining that. You’ll have many questions answered when you dive into why there is such a feud between the two parties. The book also takes us back into history to see where the Liberal party stood through that time. If you don’t know the history behind it all, then you are sure to walk away very well informed. “It is safe to say world history before the twentieth century is not well-known. There seems to be little appreciation of how we have progressed from the world of illiteracy to the magical world of DNA, democracy, and drive-through wedding chapels. This book sheds light on how we got here.”

If you want to be more informed to have a political stance but don’t know where to find the information, then you have come to the right place. The book is informative and well-written.

Author Marcelo Brazzi is an interesting man. One look at the bucket list on his website will tell you this. He has traveled the world, climbed Mr. Everest, run the rapids of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, raced a car, worked on spacecraft, is well read, multi-lingual, a father to three, lives near the ocean, and loves his life. He also had a fascinating career as an aerospace development engineer and part of the NASA team who worked with the Apollo missions. Brazzi brings his passion and intelligence to his writing in this very potent, emotionally charged, and intensely researched book.

I need to point out that I disagree with most of what he says in his new book, The Liberal Record: Everything You Need to Know, but I’m also not about to judge this book based on my political and personal views of the opinions presented within its pages. The Liberal Record is for liberals. They will love it. If you’re a liberal or a Democrat, angry and upset with the way the world is headed, this is the book for you. Brazzi covers pretty much every topic: global warming, abortion rights, healthcare, legalizing marijuana, and handguns to name just a few. He even touches on smaller topics that we hear less about these days, such as the metric system. He put four-years of his own research behind his book, has included charts and graphs, and at the back has links to his references.

If you’re a conservative, you may not want to read this book. Consider yourself warned.

I had the pleasure of a brief conversation with Brazzi. After traveling the world, and putting spaceships into the sky, Brazzi, in retirement, has had had it with the way things are headed and penned this book to voice his concerns. In the end, this book is really his opinions about life and the world and politics. He doesn’t sugar coat anything. If you’re looking for a book that is neutral, carefully worded, and unbiased, this book is not for you. But if you want something to give to your liberal friends, or a book to support your own liberal beliefs, this is a must-read.

I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest review.

This book divides and explains two main parties (liberal and conservative) or (Democrat or Republican).
Depending upon how you identify, the definition or idea of your “party” will be covered in this book. These identities throughout history have changed sides and he covered how that happened.
As a social conservative, Marcelo Brazzi explains how the parties came to popularity, have changed ideals and views and why they are the way they are now. He covers everything from the state of the media, voter fraud, climate change, health care. These ideas along with the war on drugs help to affect the parties. He is a progressive and that resounds throughout the book.
While I don’t agree with everything he has written, I do admire the way he has tried to write this in an objective way. He points out the myths for both sides and how the ideas came about.
Being an engineer by trade, he is very familiar with statistics, graphs and tables and does a good job using them to support the points he is making. These are easy to read and interpret.
This book is well written, and the chapters follow a historical timeline. It was easy to read and kept my attention. He has written this way in for everyone to understand. This concisely written primer can be a good starting point if you are just taking an interest in politics or feel you need a refresher course after the way the media now portray politics with their own bent.

This is a book that the writer brings out the ideas of two major political parties in the political history of the US,this book also explains how the politics of the US have divided the country.
The division has seen the opposition party finding itself being demonized so much leading to the suppression of the true accomplishments and values. The author also has brought about the issue of how the US electorate is fully informed of the deeds of the conservative and liberals.
The idea of this book tells of some things that is not corrected the government will get towards dysfunction and disunity. I highly recommend this book to other readers since the writer has presented his ideas in a way that that is both interesting and informative of the politics of the US and the world in general
