Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.
Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.
It's a tense volume, with a lot of backstory for Jiraya (finally!) which only drives home the point that Jiraya's not long for this world... Kishimoto is just prolonging the emotional torture for me. That said, it's a very solid volume, with some intriguing art and good worldbuilding. Cool new jutsus, a reveal of deeper intrigues... We finally can see fully the absurd militancy of this Naruto's world and the tremendous costs that its inhabitants pay with their lives.
Not sure if it's clear or not, but I'm totally hooked now. Whatever faults Naruto has, I stopped minding most of them ;)
It's impossible to say enough about the upcoming fight being teased here, but I won't spoil anything. Jiraiya's past is such good stuff. He's a great mentor character overall. I can't see how some people say they get bored reading these parts. Baffles me.
Jiraiya discovers that two members of the Akatsuki are actually former students of his. We gte to dive a little deeper into Jiraiya's past and see how he came to meet these former students. However in the present it seems Jiraiya has met his match!!
Jiraiya is going off alone. Again. But this time it the weight of doom hangs over him. The setup is quick and the battle shows off some really cool sage skills. We've never really seen what he can do, after all.
O told me that she found the pain guy with all the piercings attractive and I just don’t see it. But I ain’t gonna yuck her yum. ANWAYS, how are we just gonna casually after 41 volumes mention whose Naruto’s parents were. They literally dropped the bomb and said oh well anyways. Also how did he figure out who the main guy for the Akatsuki was? I think we really slowly moving at some parts and others we can’t help but speed run. But we are speed running important things like Naruto’s parents, and slowly dragging me on a concrete road thru nonsensical things like how powers work that we’ve heard about 100 times.
There's an insane amount of backstory for Jiraiya in this one and I'm okay with that. While it would've been better to stretch it out a bit more throughout previous arcs, you know that the purpose here was to get you invested in the character quickly.
He now goes up against Pain alone and assumes the burden of taking him down before anyone gets caught in his path. This is simply exciting from start to finish. This is where we learn what the rinnegan is all about. Or at least part of it.
The toads really bring their A-game every time they're brought in for a fight. When Jiraiya is first drawn with them in the shadows, it's epic. They really are some of my favourite characters oddly enough. They have more personality than some of the human characters and they are always badass. Ma and Pa are a real dynamic duo. With their long cloaks and giant mouths, they look like hand puppets sitting on Jiraiya's shoulders. Dangerous puppets with very cool jutsu. I love that he applied his "magical" ninja powers to toads so now we get these toad-branded moves which are really fun to see. The genjutsu world they create with their frog-song is delightful. Those big toad golems are very cool. The toads, bringing it once again.
Another important toad we get to meet is the long scroll one. Is he sitting on the scroll or is he the scroll? This guy is the key to Naruto's seal. A seal he was meant to open. Father had plans apparently.
Sasuke and Naruto come face to face again. In a side by side panel that will become a favourite reference for fan artists everywhere. Once again, he puts his lightning wrapped hand through Naruto. Great character but he really does get on my nerves and he honestly gets worse until right at the very end.
Jiraiya needs power to fight the Rinnegan. An ocular jutsu we learn belonged to the god of shinobi. He does this with sage mode. A new type of power we will learn about later that almost turns him into a toad. But the most important thing about this fight is finding out who Pain is.
Three orphans: Nagato, Yahiko and Konan. Taken in by a soldier of a land partly responsible for their turmoil and taught to protect each other. These orphans who are so desperate to protect something are a common element in this story. Orphans everywhere because of course there are. This is a story about child soldiers. These ones have lost their dearest friend, another Naruto look-alike, and now they want the world to feel pain as they do. Because if everyone was in pain, they wouldn't cause pain to others. Except most of the characters causing people pain are doing it because they are in pain. Doesn't add up and the more they talk about it, neither does the Akatsuki's plans. But they're still such iconic villains. THE SIX PATHS OF PAIN ARE IN ATTENDANCE. Amazing entrance.
Jiraiya sees those marks on his face as tears of blood! Of course he does, he's a soldier. That's all the people born and bred in a hidden village are meant to be.
The whole prophecy thing is interesting. Like with Harry Potter, which I keep comparing Naruto to, the prophecies' all about choice. Who Voldy chose as his future nemesis and here, who Jiraiya chooses as his future student and what they chose to do with their life. I don't really see the Toad sages prophecy as proper precognition because there's just so much contingency in it. Jiraiya literally gets a do-over in it.
Having an entire volume focus on Jiraiya was a smart move.
Jiraiya gets deeper into his mission as you get to see he might know who Pain and his buddies are. A little background you learn the great frog master trained Pain and his friends when they were kids. So get a little bit more background on both Jiraiya and Pain which was nice. I also think this battle is pretty brutal as Jiraiya is getting his ass handed to him and the ending is not a happy scene for our old pervy dude.
I will say the excessive amount of explanation here was killing the momentum though, especially in the actual fight. Sometimes I feel like just ignoring what they're saying as when they explain what they'll do they actually just DO it right after. So stop explaining it, please?
PAIN HAS ARRIVED! We get to see some of Jiraiya’s backstory and the battle here is fantastic. I love all the different cell parallels between Naruto/Sakura/Sasuke & Jiraiya/Tsunade/Orochimaru & Yahiko/Nagato/Konan!
Once upon a time, the spirit of an evil Nine Tailed Fox wreaked havoc on Konohagakure; the Village Hidden in the Leaves, killing hundreds of honorable ninja in the skirmish and leaving many children without homes or parents. The Fourth Hokage (leader of the village) unleashes a forbidden jutsu (magic spell/ninja ability) to seal the spirit of the evil fox into the body of a newborn baby named Naruto at the cost of his own life. He did this in the hopes that the boy could one day learn to master the power of the demonic spirit and use it to protect the village and become a great hero of the people.
Unknown to the citizens of the Leaf, the Nine Tailed Fox was being controlled by an even more powerful adversary, a legendary rogue ninja that plans to wage war against the entire world from the shadows. The identity of the mysterious ninja that attacked the Leaf Village using the Nine Tails died with the Fourth Hokage, and he used what remained of his life to gift Naruto with the power of one day being able to stop this evil ninja and a clan of outlawed S-rank criminals called the Akatsuki from committing mass genocide against the many hidden villages and clans of the world.
Because of the evil spirit sealed inside him, Naruto grew up hated by the other children of the village because they believe him and the Nine Tails to be one and the same. They believe he’s a ticking time bomb waiting to go off, waiting for the perfect moment to kill them all just like the Nine Tails killed their parents and families. Shunned, dehumanized and treated like dirt, Naruto vows to become the greatest hokage the world has ever seen so that he can receive the love and acknowledgement he never got as a child.
On top of the Nine Tails power and the will to never quit, Naruto also possesses the uncanny ability to turn everyone he meets into a potential comrade. He brings out the best in his peers and tries his hardest to make his enemies see the errors of their ways. He disobeys the rules and ignores cultural traditions to try and make changes to the world and break the eternal cycle of war and hatred through his own methods. His determination is infectious to friend and foe alike. He earns himself the respect he deserves by overcoming one impossible obstacle at a time.
Naruto encounters many fascinating and terrifying ninja over the course of his journey to become hokage. Among them are Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto’s best friend and rival who is driven by the vengeful lust to murder his elder brother after he wiped out their own clan in cold blood. Sasuke warms up to Naruto, but his hatred and trauma are dangerous forces that threaten to break his moral code as a ninja and destroy his reputation among his peers.
Kakashi Hatake is a notorious copycat ninja that survived one of the most brutal and devastating wars in history as well as the Nine Tails attack on the Leaf Village. He becomes Naruto and Sasuke’s mentor and teaches them a great number of valuable lessons about surviving in the dangerous world of rogue ninja, bloodthirsty assassins and clans ruled by corruption.
Jiraiya is a perverted yet wise sage who taught the Fourth Hokage everything he knew and he’s regarded as a god among shinobi that’s famous for his heroic actions in the second great ninja war. He takes an interest in Naruto and raises him as a father figure to carry on the legacy of the Fourth Hokage to prepare him for the many dangerous people that want to use his power for their own nefarious purposes.
The Akatsuki is one such group of wicked ninja. Among them are Sasuke’s brother Itachi who murdered his clan and possesses many dangerous techniques involving illusions, psychological torture and elemental manipulation. Sasori who controls poisonous puppets with magical threads, Orochimaru who mastered the forbidden arts of reanimation and quasi-immortality, Deidara who fights from afar using detonating clay and many other deadly foes.
The entire series chronicles Naruto and his fellow ninja comrades growing through countless trials and tragedies. There are hundreds of unique jutsus, clans, and techniques which lead to some very intense, creative and strategic battles between skilled ninja with diverse abilities that don’t always match up evenly. There are clan based abilities such as the Aburame clan’s ability to control insects, the Yamanaka clan’s ability to jump into other people’s minds and control their bodies and the Inuzuka clan’s ability to bond with wolves that learn to mimic their master’s battle skills. Then there’s ocular genetic abilities such as the sharingan which allows the user to create psychological illusions, copy their enemy’s abilities and manipulate elemental energy. The byakugan allows the user to read their enemies vital points and detect their spiritual energy from faraway. The rinnegan grants control over space and gravity and so on.
On top of having countless unique abilities, nearly every character has a tragic backstory that makes them sympathetic and relatable, even the nastiest of the villains have well-explored reasons for following the paths they do and becoming the way they are. One of my favorite aspects of the series is how well it explores the physical, emotional and psychological effects war can have on society and culture as well as the survivors and future generations that are forced to live in them. How it breeds racism and cultural disputes, how it inspires hatred in orphaned children and war veterans robbed of their homes toward foreign nations, as well as how this eventually leads to further death, war, poverty and destruction. Learning to forgive the ones you hate to prevent further conflict and damaging the world for future generations even further is a major theme throughout the story.
Being a massive 700 chapter series, it’s not too surprising that there’s some plot holes and consistency issues. A rule might be stated regarding the requirements and usage of a certain jutsu or ability only for that rule to be repeatedly broken 400 chapters later. Sometimes the characters and rules contradict themselves, sometimes the chronology of certain events and historical facts don’t match up perfectly, the lore and general backstory go through several retcons that change the philosophy and power scaling of the characters and the scope of world-building; the final arc especially drags on and breaks a lot of the logic and rules that the story spent the whole series setting up, etc...
Naruto’s far from perfect, but I remember it very fondly for being one of the first series that introduced me to things like manga and Japanese entertainment in general. It was one of those childhood classics like Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin. The series grew up with me and I can’t help but feel grateful to it for introducing me to hundreds of other franchises that I’m still a huge fan of to this day and I continue to find many new ones on the regular. Naruto's journey from a clownish, disrespected outcast into a talented, well-loved and admired hero is a memorable one.
Jiraiya is cool but dang, why did we get so much exposition about him all of a sudden? Couldn't we have gotten pieces of this throughout the series? I didn't like how this was handled.
Jiraiya and Nagato’s battle is very theatrical but I was bored af. I liked this volume because of the back story of Jiraiya and the 3 war orphans.
It’s literally just giving prior info to Pain’s powers, the jutsus that he uses.
We found out why and who named Tsunade, Jiraiya, and Orochimaru, The 3 Great Shinobi of Konoha
Jiraiya’s former pupils were revealed. Nagato, wants to protect those closest to him. He’ll be happy as long as his companions are. Yahiko, has big goals and dreams of peace, a world free from war. Konan, she always follows and never leads. I wish she was a stronger character.
It’s sad when they get left alone again. I know the culture can be different, but could he at least have given them each a hug? It had been 3 years. Those children are traumatized, they need a little affection. He was like their uncle, a father figure. They were distraught as he just walked away, his back to them.
So, Nagato is a god now…?
Where the hell did Pain’s summoning creatures come from…?
Jiraiya’s hair power is funny. It’s crazy.
Ma and Pa are heree. Such a funny comedy duo. Ma’s tongue elongates wraps and taste buds emit sizzling hot liquid. It’s gross but cool. The frog paralysis jutsu is awesome too.
Nagato’s rinnegan is revealed. Jiraiya says about Nagato, “He demonstrated the ability to achieve all six changes in nature, which is unheard of in a single person. He possessed power that was well-versed in all mainstream jutsu and had mastered all sorts of jutsu by the mere age of 10.”
So exciting, Naruto’s key from Minato! Since he left the key, Minato meant for him to use the Yang power sealed inside his belly.
The introduction of Madara Uchiha, one of the founders of Konoha. The other being, the 1st Hokage, Hashirama Sengu.
I love the great toad sage. He cracks me up.
The prophecy is introduced, “In my dream, you, who are solely pervy, will still manage to become a splendid shinobi, and will come to stand on your own to feet, acquiring disciples. One such disciple will one day bring about a great change to the world of shinobi. This I saw in my dream: Either great stability or great destruction, the likes of which this world has never seen before. One of those two, changes. You will guide that revolution and eventually, there shall come a day when you will be forced to make a critical selection. That choice you make shall decide which way the change goes. In my dreams, you walked the world writing books.
“Books? Whatever for?”
I do not know either, but perhaps it means you shall travel widely seeing all things in this universe.
“Do your prophecies ever not come to pass?”
Never, besides which, I once saw a prophetic dream about myself that a human child would one day wander into Mount Myoboku, who would be granted to power and prophecy.”

Sayangnya nasib muridnya nelangsa semua. Mimpi murid-muridnya mendamaikan dunia. Jadi keseringan berkorban.
