I don't think I enjoyed Death Metal as much as I liked Crossing Over Easy. While the first book involved exploring connections, this second installment fell kind of flat.

I think the mystery was a lot more linear on this one. Despite really enjoying Crossing Over Easy, I don't remember much of it, and probably should have done a reread before I continued with Death Metal, even though it's only been six months or so. As it was, I didn't feel like I loved Death Metal as much as I did Crossing Over Easy. But I don't think there was as much pushback or discovery in the mystery of the story. It was a lot more obvious, and therefore quite a bit less fun to read and try to figure out.

I also didn't enjoy the magical world as much as I think I did in Crossing Over Easy, although again, I'd have to read the first book to be sure. I want to know more about this world as a whole, but Death Metal reuses a lot of the same types of characters and tropes as Crossing Over Easy. In this way, we weren't able to see a lot of the magical world in a new light.

I also didn't love the romance. It felt very rushed and also pushed compared to what it had been, and also to other cozy mysteries. I didn't enjoy the way Nora and Tanner avoided everything and talked around the fact. I'm used to slow burn, but this was something beyond that. It was very cringe.

I think I'll probably leave this series for a while and then do a whole series reread when I'm ready to read Third Knock the Charm.

I just cannot wrap my head around these books. I did enjoy the first book and was really hoping this second book would explain how Nora is dead, but there are ghosts and murders going on in wherever she ended up after she died. Is SHE not a ghost?? One part in the book she decides to choose to unwind at a spa because it was a healthier choose to make. Wait, what!!!? She is DEAD!!
And what is up with her having sex on her mind constantly throughout ‘both’ books. For me that got old fast. Took away from the story, for me.
Unfortunately, I won’t be reading anymore in this series.

I proofed the first audiobook in the series and enjoyed it enough to read this one. Very easy listen for my commute with likeable characters. Grimm and Nora's bickering is the best! I wish the mystery aspect was a bit more creative and intruguing though. Might continue the series.

3.5 stars: Cute. Better than the last one but don’t go into this for this mystery. This one was also exceedingly easy to figure out— I knew the how and who long before Nora did. Even so, the characters and town are an enjoyable place to visit, plus the book is light and short so it was definitely worth my time. Again, nicely narrated on audio.

On my second visit to Eastwind I met more of its fascinating inhabitants, and Nora was investigating another murder. The local constabulary dismissed the death as suicide but the ghost of the deceased knew better.

So did Nora. Hey! It's part of what being a Fifth Wind witch is about!

In the course of solving the crime she learns that she has much more 'witchy' talent than she thought she had. Adventure, danger, high jinks, and some truly hilarious situations that shouldn't be missed are on the agenda.

I loved getting to know the principal characters better and watching Nora's relationship with Tanner develop (albeit at a snail's pace!). And after another novelful of him, Nora's snarky familiar, the hellhound Grim, has officially stolen my heart.

I received an advance reader copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Eastwind Witches:
Eastwind Witches - I love these kinds of witches; nothing mean or nasty but tough when needed. My friend had these three books and we spent a day reading and laughing about the characters and the happenings. Funny, entertaining and well written, the stories are strong enough to keep the reader immersed in the pages, but with a simple storytelling style. The characters grow as the pages fly by and there's no Stupid Formula, just plain entertainment. Surprise, no vulgar language or cussing. Plus, you'll love Ted; sorry no spoilers. Little editing needed but not much.

Crossing Over Easy #1 - I love these kinds of witch stories. This is our first book by this author; my friend and I read her copies during one of our get-together weekends. We both had fun with them. Easily and quickly read, COE was funny and interesting. The characters are funny and entertaining; the story line was entertaining; and the dialog and actions weren't of the stupid variety. Even without a friend's comments, this book is good for relaxation or something simple but entertaining. Did I mention the book was entertaining. OK, I'm not funny, but Nova is a lot. 5*

Death Metal #2 - This book starts three months after Crossing Over Easy ended. We loved the dialog; it was almost as if we were doing the talking. Well written, funny and entertaining, the pages flew by as we laughed our way to the end. The characters are filling out more, including Eastwind, and their dialog is extremely entertaining. Nora is discovering more about herself and the perks and dangers of being a Fifth Wind witch. 5*

Third Knock The Charm #3 - This book begins two weeks after Death Metal ends. This time no one is killed, but many other things are instead. Funny, entertaining and this time filled with lots of sexual tension. My favorite character is the Library, which I wish all readers had access to one of their own. Ms. Nelson writes well, describes vividly and add humor in abundance. My friend and I just laughed ourselves silly about the message of sexual harassment is wrong, but physical assault is OK. Nope, we didn't disagree on half of that message, but we come from a time of real sexual harassment where slapping hands or faces was a must; now it's a crime to defend yourself. 5*

Queso de los Muertos #4 - Another well written, intriguing but quickly read Eastwind tale. Fast paced, entertaining and a touch of sexual tension, this is a good addition to the series. It's nice the author doesn't use vulgar language or explicit sex, but uses humor and well thought out storylines. The characters remain interesting and their dialog believable. There's no stupid formula in this series. I could use a bowl of queso and handmade chips. I contacted the author to review her books since I enjoyed the first three. 5*

Psych Out #5 - Wow, we've a few twists to the plot! This book isn't a cliffhanger, but it will fun to find out what's happening with Nora in the next book. Well written, intriguing and with a few kinks added to mix, along with more development of the characters. The plot is really intense near the end of the story and there's a few laughs along the way. Plus, the sexual tension is still running amok. 5*

Gone Witch #6 - Imagine the sexual tensions with three guys available, poor Nora. Another well written, fast paced plot filled with intrigue and suspense. Along with humor, there's a build up for a bad future ahead for Eastwind. Changes are already taking place, especially with several characters. Once started, this story was hard to put down. 5*

Love Spells Trouble #7 - What a neat spell, but what terrible residuals. Another fun and magical book. There's all kinds of characters from the past, along with trouble for the future. The storyline was pretty good and there's plenty of sexual tension and then some. There's plenty of intrigue and suspense to go with the tension and the humor. One of the characters leaves and I hated to see him go, but the ending still works just fine. 5*

Storm A-Brewin' #8 - Storm picks up a week later from when Love Spells Trouble ended. This is a very good story! All our favorite and not so favorite characters are dealing with a lot of hatred with certain businesses being targeted. The story mirrors the reverse discrimination that's so prominent in the news, but at least the book is interesting and with humor. 5*

I was hoping the character would have grown a bit from the first book in the series. Yet, that doesn’t seem to be the case. She felt even more immature and cringe in this one. The whole trying to give him space because he has a lot on his plate but is actively giving him sexy eyes….. I just can’t. Speaking of the love interest, he feels fake and just wholly unrealistic. Honestly, every interaction between the two of them feels uncomfortable and cringe. And yes, the “you’re not like any other woman I’ve ever met” trope was thrown in. Which is hilarious because that is a lie. She is basic and doesn’t stand out as a character. If it wasn’t for her being annoying, she would be completely forgettable. She keeps trashing other women (especially women who were like who she was…. Only a few months prior) and fantasizing about nearly every man she meets.

I really want to like this series but it feels like a struggle. I enjoy the overall feel and plot of the cozy mysteries, even if they are predictable and feel secondary to the hormonal things happening. I find the town and people charming, but we don’t get enough of them. The character’s interactions with other females, when not being super judgy, is nice. However, I hate nearly every scene with her and another guy. It is hard to read because the character seems to immediately regress to teen angst “omg, hot, etc” and can’t interact without ogling them. Just a sampling of Nora’s view on the men around her:
“If Jane Saxon wasn’t taking full advantage of every inch of her fiance’s physique, she and I were gonna have to have a little chat.”
“Ansel, a muscular adonis.”
“Sexy bartender”

I would also like to note that it was messed up that Ruby decided to make the anchoring process painful just because she didn’t like a comment that the ghost made. Not sure how that is okay. But, “I guess in this line of work, you had to get your kicks where you could.” Sure, just assault the dead person who was murdered and came to you for help. Just because she didn’t want to be seen in Ruby’s home.

I may try reading the next one or two (sadly I bought the entire series without trying it out first) because there were some people saying it really picks up after the 3rd book and I do really enjoy some of the side characters and the cozy mystery element.

I love this series, book two gives us more about Nora's past, and about the afterlife she has found herself in. The progression of the world building is like a soothing melody. Giving you hints of world building, mix in with emotional personal feelings from Nora, and beats of the mystery all while building up the characters and life within Eastwind.

It's great that the police aren't bumbling fools, but also still have a reason to need Nora's help. I mean how many unsolved mysteries would be giving the justice they deserve if they had a sleuth able to talk to the victim after death.

While Nora's constant thoughts of should she feel / can they / does he feel, get intense as this book progresses, it makes complete sense for her personality to be unfolding like this. For the first time in her life (after death) she can have a mind to focus on the possibility of a love life that she skipped over while running her empire. I am hopefully that this will also lead to the possibility of having real friends too. A found family of a community. There's so much potential for Nora.

The mystery is well laid out, when it all comes together I was second guessing who the killer was as the pieces were falling into place like a bait and switch was going to happen. It gave me a rush as everything unraveled for the culprit. Plus we get to dive into more magical species and Nora's own talents.

If you follow my reviews you know I'm all about the so I'm 100% triple invested in this series now. lol

You'll love this book if you love complex paranormal worlds with detailed cases and all the charm of a cozy mystery small community that looks after their own.

Nora learns to lean in to her most powerful tool, her Intuition, to solve another murder in a paranormal town delightfully self-conscious of it's unfortunately high murder rate. (It made me think of Cabot Cove, and Midsomer, where the town is small, the murder rate ridiculously high, and the audience the only ones saying, "why would you stay/live/visit there!?")

We learn more about the very many things that Nora doesn't yet understand about her new home, learn about her past life, who she used to be, and a bit about the trauma that shaped her.

All while trying to fight her inescapable attraction to the town's most likely Will Beneficiary. Her attraction warring with her track record, she tries to keep things professional as a diner waitress who hides the fact that she was a super star chef and resteraunt owner.

Poor Nora has a lot on her plate, and a sarcastic Familiar, a former Hellhound, and retired Grim, who is only too happy to point out when she's falling short - and who would rather return to the Deadwood than admit he's really on her side. (Unless you bribe him. With people food. Definitely with the bribes.)

This time she runs headfirst into old money, old Power, greed, family drama, and more hints that she really doesn't know the first thing about her own Powers. And that maybe her mentor, Ruby True, isn't so sure about them either.

5☆ = Loved/Highly Recommend
4☆ = Really Enjoyed
3☆ = Good, Solid, Read
2☆ = Had Potential, or At Least A Decent Premise AND Some Difficult-To-Overlook-Flaws

A fantastic book 2 in a laugh out loud, paranormal murder mystery you just can't put down!
I was so enamored after reading book 1 that I had to go right to book 2 in this series. Nora seems to be settling in while realizing she is only one of two psychics in town. She has a huge crush on Tanner and now works at a waitress at his diner. Ted, the Grim Reaper keeps trying to ask her on a date and she nicely keeps putting him off, Her sarcastic and snarky familiar, Grim keeps her hopping. When a werewolf is found dead and the sheriff calls it a suicide, Nora is approached by the victim's ghost to say it wasn't suicide, she was murdered. Nora feels she MUST try and find out who killed the werewolf. With Grim, she goes about doing just that and with some crazy twists and turns and red-herrings you are led through a fun storyline and laugh out loud dialog. This book was so much fun, I can't wait to read the next book in this series. You will not be able to put this book down, not only are you on the edge of your seat due to the great mystery, but you will do it laughing as well, Keep it coming Grim! I received an ARC from the author but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

The second book in the series, Death Metal is a cute, fun, entertaining paranormal cozy mystery that can be easily read as a standalone. Nora is slowly learning about her new abilities and has finally gotten a little alone time with Tanner, her boss and love interest, when a new ghost literally pops up between them. It turns out this werewolf shifter just died and the deputy is calling it a suicide. Well the ghost is here to tell her otherwise and she wants Nora to prove that someone killed her. I enjoyed this story as it was well written with fun characters and the premise of the series itself is interesting. The mystery was intriguing as the author slowly leads the reader to the killer and the climax of the story. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys a nice clean story filled with humor and containing intriguing characters and mysteries. I for one am looking forward to what the next story will bring. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I am really enjoying the Eastwind series, having started with Book 1, which although not essential, gives a good background to the story and characters and flesh things out a bit more. Nora has decided to settle and has settled well in Eastwind, with a job, waitressing at Medium Rare and being a medium for ghosts who have not made it over to the other side. And her next ghost visitor was not ready to cross over because she was murdered, and not just a bored unhappy rich bitch who committed suicide.

I like the ambiguous relationship between Tanner and Nora, the will-he-won't-he (kiss her, ask her out, tell her he is interested...), making me want to say "Oh c'mon!" but what I really like is the fact that Ted has a thing for Nora. That really makes me snigger. I also like the different creatures that inhabit and feature in Eastwind, it gives them a new and added dimension - not just "the grumpy old woman next door", but the "grumpy old woman who is also a werewolf, next door"..... I almost wish I lived there too!

I found this series quite by accident one day while I was browsing paranormal cozy mysteries and I am now hooked! A great small town atmosphere with really likeable characters - and don't forget the ogres, elves, pixies, "Ted" the Grim Reaper and of course snarky Grim the familiar! Nora seems to be settling into her new after-death life in Eastwind, making new friends and getting in tune with her magical ability to see ghosts. But when a suicide by silver poisoning has Nora's intuition humming and the ghost of the victim contacts her, it turns out to be a murder that Nora can't help but investigate. The author has a great imagination - love the shower where magic is used instead of water to clean you and your clothes! And that magical waterfall door/entrance into the spa that provides you with immediate relaxation - wish that was real! A great series to fire up your imagination and an entertaining story and cast of characters to keep your interest.

“The only way to live with the possibility of death is to accept the present possibilities of life.”

Nora Ashcroft, former restaurant owner prior to her untimely demise and subsequent relocation to Eastwind is learning more than she might want to:both as a Fifth Wind Witch and working at Medium Rare with her “boss” Tanner Culpepper. And now, her new ghostly client, Heather Lovelace, needs closure after her death is assumed a suicide. And leave it to Nora to go with her gut and find out what really happened, while balancing her work life and being open to learning about her job as a necromancy-in-trading with Ruby True, her landlord.

This second book in the series is more like it. I love how the author is developing the characters and how Eastwind is such a cool place. A definite high recommendation. 5/5

Four months after her death, Nora Is settling nicely into her second life, learning to live with the fact that she's a witch and even getting comfortable with the ghosts that pop in to chat. But when there is a high society werewolf suicide, Nora's intuition and the ghost of the departed both insist it's murder! With the sherrif's department refusing to listen, it is up to Nora to investigate the crime. Come along with Nora in this witty cozy mystery and discover a whole new side of Eastwind. If it is your first trip here you are in for a delightful surprise! Brilliant

This series kept popping up on my books you might like, so I gave in and downloaded the first one, finished it in one go and immediately began the second, which I just finished and am typing this as book three downloads.
Nova Nelson, you are a genius, the concept of this series is bonkers; die, wake up a witch in a magic town with a hellhound as a familiar; but it works on so many levels. Joining Nora as she tries to navigate her new life is a joy! Grim is just amazing, and I want to adopt him!
The main characters are well drawn and believable, and most importantly likeable. And I haven't guessed the baddie before the reveal yet!
Read this series if you enjoy a paranormal tale with a twist, lots of different paranormal beings sharing a quirky town, lots of sass, of course a mystery, a little romance and a lot of laughs.

A few months have passed and Nora settles into her new tasks as medium as well as helping at "Medium Rare", to be close to Tanner and her other friends. Another unhappy ghost comes knocking at her door to find out what happened to her.
With her friends' help and her own intuition she approaches the situation head on.
Like in the first story of Eastwind Witches, the story is highly entertaining, as it is full of quirky characters and quite a few crazy situations are described.
It is not necessary to read the books in order, but it makes some facts of life in Eastwind easier to understand to know the first book.
Loved the second one may be even more than the first and am looking forward to the third.

This is such a cute story about a witch who also happens to be able to see ghosts. She was told in the mortal realm that she would soon be dying and going to an alternate realm..now that she didn't believe or pay attention to until she woke up dead in another realm where she finds out she's a witch who can see ghosts. She's working in a diner with Tanner, another witch, whom she has a huge crush on. Just as they are maybe just might be having a moment, the ghost of a werewolf woman shows up and asks for help. And Nora is off and running trying to solve the mystery of the death of a wealthy spoiled woman while coming to terms with her second life.
Cute story and cute read!!

I received this book for free in exchange for a honest review. This is the second book in the series. In this book we find Nora Ashcroft busy working a Medium rare, while trying to learn exactly what a five wind witch does. When a wealthy werewolf dies and the sheriff is convinced it’s suicide Nora thinks different. When the ghost visits her she starts investigating. When the deceased’s mother starts to come down with the same symptoms Nora has to step up her investigation. We meets some new characters in this book who are delightful as the rest of the town. I really enjoyed this series so far and this book! I would recommend it. It’s a quick, fun read with great characters and good writing.

A second book from Nova Nelson about Nora, the new woman in Eastwind.

In this book, Nora becomes better acquainted with the townsfolk and is called upon to solve another murder by the victim's ghost. As she goes about her sleuthing, she is accompanied by her familiar, an enormous black dog of dubious character, named Grim. Things are about to get both heated and dangerous and busy. Nora has a bad habit of biting off more than she can chew, so to speak. Need I say more? Ok then. I will. This book is a great read and Nora and the townsfolk and the town itself all make for a lively and otherwise intriguing story. Can't wait to start the next book, so I'll go get it right now.

Her psychic suspicions are confirmed when the victim's ghost shows up on Nora's doorstep asking for help in solving her own murder.

Werewolf Shifter Heather Lovelace is dead – the verdict is suicide by silver ingestion.
When Nora Ashcroft, 32, one of Eastwind's most recent arrivals, is visited by Heather's ghost it turns out that it was, in fact, murder.
And she wants Nora to find out whodunnit!
For, without closure, Heather could be stuck as a ghost forever.
Nora is a witch and, potentially, a powerful one but she is completely untrained so her investigating has to follow the traditional route of retracing Heather's steps on the day she died.
All while working in the restaurant with Tanner and obsessing over his every move.
The murder and the possibility of romance share equal space.
“Death Metal” is a pleasant read but not a particularly memorable one.
I was in the mood for something light and it definitely fit the bill.
3 Stars.

Brilliant - I loved book one of this series and this book is just as good. I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting as I only downloaded it last night. Nova Nelson definitely knows how to spin a tale and create a great story-line with some really great characters. If you enjoy Cosy Mystery about witches then you will love this series. I would advise you read book one first so you don't miss out on some of the background to the story, besides it's such a good book it is definitely worth reading first. Nora is crazy busy helping Tanner out at his restaurant, Medium Rare. As luck would have it, another ghost comes to see her at Ruby's after being murdered. The police are determined it's a suicide. Heather, the new ghost, Nora and Ruby, Nora's mentor, are sure it's not. So now Nora is twice as busy working at the restaurant and solving another murder along with her familiar, Grim. The characters are well written, Grim is snarky and there are some good laughs too. My favorite kind of cozy! I definitely recommend it. I'm going to start the third book in the series soon.

A wealthy werewolf is dead and her death is declared a suicide by Eastwind's deputy. However, Nora's psychic sense is telling her there's more to the death than it seems and when the victim's ghost shows up, her suspicions are confirmed. Nora must solve the mystery and get the deputy on board.

The second book in the series, "Death Metal" was a great read. You're introduced to more characters and types of beings. It's great to see Nora learning how to be a fifth wind witch and become a true part of the community.

Nora is still figuring out what it means to be a Fifth Wind witch. While hanging on the porch with her crush, a possible romantic moment is interrupted by a ghost who's death has been called a suicide but she knows she was murdered. And now Nora thinks so too. So she's off on another mystery.
It seemed like there was an equal amount of time spent on the mystery and the will they/won't they with Tanner and Nora. Dear God there was so much back and forth in Nora's mind about Tanner. I'm going to read the next book in the series but I'm really hoping that it's not going to be more of that because it just makes Nora seem supremely wishy-washy and that is not the character we're seeing in the rest of the book.

This book picks up 4 months after Crossing Over Easy ends and since we're already familiar with the main characters, there's no recap needed and we jump into the story. Nora and Grim are funny and I definitely still like this series, but the murder mystery in this one was just ok. I don't normally try to figure out who the murderer is, but this was an easy one and I figured it out fairly early on.

There's still lots of tension between Nora & Tanner and we'll see what happens, but personally, I'd rather just see them stay friends/business partners.
