I really enjoyed this book. Without my friend I wouldn’t have been introduced to Farida and I am grateful that she allowed me to borrow this book. I related to a lot of the issues that Farida brought up and her writing made me think of things about my personality and the things that males in my life have said or the way they have behaved is rooted in patriarchy. It made me think about the way I dress and think about my body which I believed was a personal choice but reading this book actually prompted me to delve deeper into why I made those choices in the first place and why I feel the way I do. She writes clearly and beautifully and I throughly loved this collection from the beginning to the end. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series! She is very inspiring and I am glad we have someone like her to speak up for women throughout the world. Although in most developed nations woman have mor power and say over their lives, patriarchy still exists (a lot of the times in more hidden forms) and gets harder to recognize. However, just because it is better hidden, doesn’t mean that is doesn’t exist and it doesn’t affect the lives of millions of people (the same goes for racism, homophobia, and all the other types of inequalities). The sooner we realize this, the sooner we can take action to improve the lives of marginalized groups and books like these are continuing and starting these types of conversations which I love!
This book is incredible, some poems I connected with instantly, some poems were truly eye opening. Farida D is amazing at telling her story, speaking up for women, and shouting her truth and the truth of many Arab women. In order to understand people who are not raised in similar cultures or communities to our own, we have to listen to their stories. This is one story that I really encourage you to open yourself up to. I wish I could convince everyone to read this book with an open mind, because that will absolutely make whomever reads it a better person.
It is difficult to express the relief I get from reading a book where as if my own personal thoughts and experiences as a woman are presented in such a compelling way, where I have myself struggled to put into words why I feel the way I feel before. This book feels like home, it feels intimate and I relate to it but I also relate to the power of the voice in which the poems are told. Beautiful read!
I binge read this great book that’s filled with realistic poems that represent feminism and how women are mistreated, misjudged & misinterpreted in a society of dominant men. Each poem has a listed reason of why the author became a feminist & how readers should. I genuinely enjoyed this eye opening book.
This was a gift from my husband and oh my did he do well.
This is a book of poems, but it reads like Spoken Word. And the topics are absolute fire. I’ve identified as a feminist for as long as I’ve been aware of the term and I feel like I am pretty well versed on the topic. But this collection taught me a lot more.
4.25✨ Once again, it feel a little uncomfortable to rate or review a book that is so personal, so all I’ll say is that I found myself connecting to it a lot, and am very glad I stumbled upon this author. As she so beautifully explains, to be a woman, being a feminist is simple, you just have to love yourself<3
"To be a feminist, just study yourself just love yourself " This book made me realize a lot of shit, I think probably every woman in the world should read this book even men cuz WHY NOT? I absolutely gonna read it again
