When a mysterious notebook is found on a field, everyone wants to know what's written inside. It's about the dangers of being too high in the air. It's about the early days of aviation. What does the courageous captain see there? What is meant with air tigers? Interesting story about physical reaction when being high up in the air. It was okay but not my favorite Doyle story. Besides there are other horror stories with airplanes being more compelling (e.g. Matheson/King). Something for Doyle fans.

Too heavy on the workings of planes and technology for me to get invested, however the descriptions of the behemoths above the clouds were lovely.

رواية جميلة كعادة ارثر كونان دويل غير اني اول مرة احلق معه فقد اعتدت على جريمة على الارض 😁 لكن لا بأس ببعض التغيير وانا احبذ الطيران والسفر والفضاء .. ما جذب انتباهي جهل الانسان في ذلك الوقت فيما يوجد في السماء واليوم اصبح السفر بالارتفاع الذي يصفه الكاتب يتم كل يوم مئات المرات في طائرات المسافرين

I re-read this for inspiration and material for an adventure I am running using Forgotten Futures RPG. It is full of some interesting fauna to use as an alien life forms and antagonists against my party aboard an early airship.
It is a fairly entertaining read and a chortle for early sci-fi experiences.

Like with Jack London, modern readers may have forgotten that Arthur Conan Doyle was an important writer of science fiction and horror in the Radium Age, and here is one of his lesser known works that I hadn't even read until recently.
When this story was published in 1913, the skies were as unknown as the deep sea. As more travel was being conducted by air, what would people find above the clouds, or in the upper layers of the atmosphere? Here, Doyle postulates an aerial jungle of strange entities who can be as deadly as they are ethereal and surreal.
If you like creature features, this is a unique one.

Mi aspettavo molto di più, forse complice anche la copertina errata che mi ha fuorviato (si parla di viaggi in mongolfiera e senza battaglie, quindi decisamente diverso). Un Doyle carino e più fantascientifico/soprannaturale! :D

تدور أحداث القصة حول طيار عبقري غريب الأطوار، يتأثر نفسيا بالاختفاء الغامض لأصدقائه الطيارين حيث لم يتبق سوى حطام طائراتهم، ويقرر كشف حقيقة ما حدث لهم، ولكنه ذهب ولم يعد مثلهم.
الطيار أرمسترونج كان حاسس بوجود عالم غريب في السماء، عالم بمخلوقات غريبة كانت السبب في اختفاء أصدقائه وهيبقى السبب في اختفائه شخصيا.
بيجهز طيارته وياخد بندقيته وينطلق إلى السماء يخترق السحب ويواجه الأمطار والعواصف والبرق والرعد وبالفعل يصل لمبتغاه ويخترق عالم الكائنات الهلامية ولحسن حظه بعد مواجهتها ينجو بحياته لكنه أراد يكرر التجربة لإثبات صدق ما رآه ويسجل كل المعلومات وللأسف المرة دي مهربش وبقيت منه المذكرة اللي سجل بها الأحداث ناقصة بعض الصفحات وحطام طائرته.
الفكرة مختلفة لكن كان في لحظات من الملل، طبعا اسم الكاتب كان له تأثير علي لقراءة القصة.

I can only imagine how it must have felt to read this story at a time when airplanes were recent innovations and aerospace was a new frontier. For them, the idea of airborne monsters wouldn't have been a stretch. Doyle masterfully capitalizes on that plausibility.
We hear most of the narrative from a smart, yet intrepid protagonist. His imagery really brings the story to life:
We can feel the rattle of the airplane and the weather as he pushes himself and his plane to the limit.
We are in awe as he describes these new creatures.
We are terrified when the monsters attack him.
This horror turns to dread when his narrative finishes with a note hastily written in pencil, when the fearless pilot is doomed and his fate is sealed.
A satisfying story from a master story teller.

Compared to ACD's Blue John short story this had far more punch and actually ended at the end rather than half way (OK 2/3rds) of the way through. It was also ultimately more interesting, hence the 4 stars.

Narraciones de misterio muy distintas a aquellas de los dos grandes campeones de Conan Doyle: Holmes y Challenger. Además apelan a ese misticismo que era la otra cara de la moneda de la lógica y rigidez victoriana, describiendo los contrastes que tan bien encarnó su autor. Gran ejercicio de lectura para conocer otra faceta del padre de Sherlock Holmes.

It’s fascinating to see an example of a “fear of the unknown” story about something which in the last 100 years has become thoroughly known. This is a wholly unique story which theorizes something I’ve never encountered in any other stories I’ve read, that there’s an entire ecosystem in the upper atmosphere full of creatures as unimaginable and those at the deepest depths of the oceans.

The concept of this short story is kind of ridiculous yet strangely fun. It’s kind of like the Zones of Thought/Fermi Paradox but for air travel: some mysterious monster in “air jungles” prevents people from going over 30,000ft in the air. You get the gist of the story fairly quickly, but it’s a cool (if super dated) idea for its time.

رعب المرتفعات قصة قصيرة أبدعها آرثر كونان دويل ترجمة إسلام سميح الردان، بأسلوب خيالي غير قابل للتصديق إلا إذا كان لمخطوط جويس أرمسترونج الناقص أي وجود فعلي وثابت، تدور أحداث القصة عن بحث الطيار أرمسترونج عن سر أختفاء أصدقائه الطيارين في ظروف غامضة حيث تكبل من أجل ذلك عناء البحث عن اللغز و أسباب الموت التي لم يقتنع بها، فشحن بندقيته التي لا تغيب عن يديه أثناء مغامراته ورحلاته، وزود طائرته الحديثة بكل الضروريات التي يحتاج إليها، فرحلة البحث لا يعرف مدتها و لا إلا أين ستوصله، الغريب في الأمر أن العملية بمجملها ستتم في السماء متجاوزا السحب و كل المرتفعات، ليتفاجأ أن في أعالي الفضاء هناك غابة و أدغال و كائنات هلامية و حيوانات غريبة الشكل على غرار ما هو موجود في الأرض.

An expedition to a height of 43,000 ft in an open cockpit monoplane: what could go wrong? Besides lack of oxygen, of course. An encounter with a behemoth, perhaps? Odd old science fiction and weird tales are such fun to read. Good story. It would be so cool if air jungles were real! 👾👾👾

This was my first Arthur Conan Doyle book, or perhaps should call it short story. It was build up in a cleaver way and I enjoyed it even tho I didn't find it that scary.

Contrary to popular opinion, this isn't even close to the first "Lovecraftian"story. That honor, per H.P.L., himself, should go to Poe's "M.S. Found in a Bottle" and "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket." Compare the ending of "Pym" with that of "At the Mountains of Madness" and remember that tentacled monsters are not a sine quo non of the Cthulhu Mythos.
BUT - The Horror of the Heights is most certainly a worthy progenitor for Lovecraft's Outer Horrors that Man Was Not Meant to Know. And a satisfying one.
In typical Conan Doyle fashion, horror is mixed with wit and even dark humor. Lovecraft famously disliked this trait in Robert Louis Stevenson, and I suspect felt similarly about the tale under review. But I enjoyed it. The closing line is all the more memorable, and is likely a good caution for, say, atheists, for example, to guard against reports of unlikely deathbed confessions. ;-)
This is a worthy adventure story, a tale of human derring-do gone monstrously wrong. If anything, it suffers from over-explication, a charge often leveled at "Lovecraftian" stories, and I suspect would have been more memorable if the horrors had been left more ... mysterious.
But for all that, I give it thumbs-up as a genuinely inventive caution for aerophobes everywhere.

La transcripción de un diario, al que le faltan páginas, adentra al lector en la extraña aventura de un aviador, el cual se enfrenta a criaturas que habitan más allá de las nubes.
La descripción detallada del autor, permitió que pudiera imaginar con nitidez la historia del protagonista. Utiliza términos de aviación y tecnicismos de vuelo lo que demuestran que Conan Doyle se documentó para hacer más creíble el cuento.
La narración estuvo buena pero considero que hizo falta ponerle más emoción.

Another ACD short story produced by Magpie Audio and read by Greg Wagland, available on Youtube (not the Simon Jones -read edition).
The Horror of the Heights takes place in the near future (at the time writing, i.e. 1913). It's the most lovecraftian of ACD's stories that I have encountered and, of course, predates Lovecraft. It's a very entertaining story (with a nod or two towards Jules Verne), if you happen to enjoy old-time aviation and beautiful creatures & horrible monsters high up in the atmosphere.
Listening to The Horror of the Heights was about 46 minutes well spent.
The Horror of the Heights takes place in the near future (at the time writing, i.e. 1913). It's the most lovecraftian of ACD's stories that I have encountered and, of course, predates Lovecraft. It's a very entertaining story (with a nod or two towards Jules Verne), if you happen to enjoy old-time aviation and beautiful creatures & horrible monsters high up in the atmosphere.
Listening to The Horror of the Heights was about 46 minutes well spent.

The thirty page spooky story format is totally alien to me but this one managed to win me over. The attention to detail to what was then cutting edge aeronautics is cool. Blame Porco Rosso or Ghibli but I love that stuff.
The creature feature portion of the story clearly takes a back seat to a narrative that is really dedicated to the awe of flight. That there is an (interesting) creature lurking in the "air jungle" above is probably going to be less interesting to modern day readers than the mystical impression that high altitude flights made on early 20th century readers.

I would have to give this story points for the research done about planes. Very detailed where a pilot finds there is an air jungle that prevents people from climbing past 30000 feet in the plane. There are creatures here like jelly fish in the air. Very interesting. The pilot writes down what he has seen and leaves behind a diary called the joyce-armstrong fragment. The plane crashes and the pilot is missing.
