Offers recent statistics on the extent and consequences of obesity in modern America and provides a broad survey of the medical and social problems related to obesity.
Want fries with that? Obesity And The Supersizing of America by Scott Ingram reveals the horrors of being obese in America. One third of America, as reported by the USDA, are overweight or obese. The author believes that this is a problem, and wants to have readers take action.
The main cause of obesity is as the author says, the easy availability of fast food, but points out that lack of personal responsibility has the same effect. He supports this claim purely on statistics. I like this style of writing because it removes the possibility of bias. Stats are a much more factual way of writing about a problem
To combat obesity, many cafeterias have banned sugary snacks and drinks. While there have been lawsuits against major food empires, these were dropped based on personal responsibility not being present. My personal feelings are on the side of the author; obesity is an issue that is difficult to control, but no one made a person obese than themselves.
This book has some disturbing scenes, and lots of scare tactic as detail. I would recommend this book to a young adult that has no issue with scary stories, like the one about a 1000 pound man. I enjoyed this book, and hopefully everyone else that reads it enjoys it as well. I really recommend this book to anyone that can handle it.
I read the book "Want Fries With That"Want Fries with That?: Obesity and the Supersizing of America by Scott Ingram. The book was about the growing epidemic of obesity in America. The United States of America has been on a steady incline on the worlds weight charts for many years. The book includes crazy facts such: as there are more people with sleep apnea, diabetes, and weight related diseases such as heart disease than every before. This is a horrifying reality that has been self-inflicted by our egos. We live in the country of plenty which, includes food as well as places to get food but, with that we have many gyms and fitness facilities. Even with all of these accessible facilities the average American gets less than fifty minutes of exercise a week and three out five do not get any at all. This is a scary fact because about 400000 Americans died in 2000 due to lack of physical exercise. That represents about 16.6% of all deaths in the United State of America. Along with that the book describes solutions. Dietitians recommend that one should get in a moderate thirty minute workout each day. With that one should burn about four to seven calories per minute. In the course, of the whole workout that would result in a loss of 150-200 calories. Over the course of five days that is about 1000 calories burnt. With the right diet and exercise one may burn up to 3500 calories. That equals one whole pound of fat!!! I would recommend this book to everyone because I thought I was an expert on this topic but, I found that I had just the basic knowledge about my body and foods affects. It is extremely important for everyone to know what can happen to your boy but, also how to fix it. I adored this book and I wish it was a mandatory book for everyone to read.
