The personal story of award-winning comedian and performer Bertice Berry recounts her often difficult life and considers such topics as racism, sexism, self-esteem, diet and exercise, philosophy, and spirituality
Bertice Berry dispenses wisdom as she shares her life story and I enjoyed the journey. Here are some of the quotes I jotted down to remember:
“I believe that we each have to pay attention to what we need in this life before we try to go after what we want. I believe that if we surrounded ourselves with stuff we don’t need, the things we do need will never reach us.”
The Macbeth principle says, “as long as you knew why people were the way they were, you could forgive them for what they did.”
“To escape the taunts, I turned inward. I forgot about what I looked like and started to focus on my mental and spiritual development. I discovered that women who see themselves as physically unappealing can be powerful in other ways.”
“I’ve always wanted to try and live and operate within God’s perfect plan for my life, but it was only as I got older that I realized God’s will is not as rigid as I had thought. There are countless ways to work within this plan, countless choices that will enable me to service Her will and my happiness at the same time.”
I lucked upon this book while helping to clean out an office space at my day job. Dr. Berry is hilarious and grounded at the same time. The core message in this book is "your beginnings do not dictate where you go in life." She also stresses knowing and truly understanding your family history so that you can end whatever cycles may have gotten folks trapped.
Luckily, it's not one of those. "I made it out and I'm great" books. She really goes into depth, telling her "business" and providing steps on how she made it out of a seemingly-hopeless situation. Dr. Berry talks embracing herself and coming to her own understanding of a higher power who she calls "She."
This was a great book, not preachy, told lovingly and real! I'm passing it on to a young woman I know.
