The new post-apocalyptic world is threatened by a corrupt U.S. government.
Hellhounds are gathering for another showdown.
Humans are working with Shadow Warriors to overthrow the new government.
What could go wrong?

When the U.S. Federation annihilates a human outpost, Marinah and King must lead the Shadow Warriors on a deadly mission to stop those responsible and discover how deep the government corruption runs.

Marinah has spent months learning to control her kickass Shadow Warrior body and she’s taken herself to the next level. All would be great if she wasn’t constantly chasing after two rambunctious wannabe fighters. The biggest problem is neither is over 3 feet tall and their brains are smaller than peapods. With war on the horizon, she doesn’t have time to play mother hen.

Between hellhounds and the U.S. Federation, King has his hands full. His mate, Marinah, is now as lethal as any Shadow Warrior and he knows when she accepts her true nature, she’ll be unstoppable.

Good verses evil, monster verses hellhound—the world needs a hero: Her name is Marinah.

I have really enjoyed this series and will keep reading, but this book missed the mark a bit. Marina is continuing her learning curve on beast adaptation. Unfortunately, there is little action and a lot of hand-wringing for most of this book. Way too much time is spent with kids and arguing about training. Extremely repetitive at times. Literally 2/3 of this book is at a standstill. Pace was way off compared to the previous books. Roberts decides to make up for all that waiting in the last 1/3 of the book, however. Big twists. Lots of action. Some surprises. I will keep reading, but things need to be paced better next time or I'm out.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

Another good series bites the dust!

I read books 1 to 3 back to back. I rated book 1 at 3.5 stars.
The first two books felt a little familiar, but I didn't have more than book 1 in my collection before yesterday. Which is why book 3 which I really recalled some of the scenes, while reading is really bugging me because I checked again under both her author names and nope, only got the thing yesterday and I know I didn't borrow them. (Typing this review even make me recall already typing one, but GR is my place to post and no review, unless author published this series under a pen name I don't know and then re-published... but I looked at old 1* reviews a few days ago and didn't see one that matched so... argh!)

Dual POV, though since it started with the woman's POV and its her story, I term her as the MC and the guy as the love interest.

Paused to type as I go, so you can guess how enthralled I am with this book...

Author got sloppy re characters:
1. From book 2 to this one, one of the side characters is in love with another side character, she switch which character this was.
2. Also from book 2, someone the MC knew for years was killed in that book, in this book she's alive and presumably the one who actually survived is dead.
This is very sloppy and should have been caught before publishing!

This book went downhill for me due to the love interest's actions. Author no longer tags these books in her blurb as 'men supporting women', which should have been a clue.
I went off the love interest and his cronies reactions when she was scared.

This above scene is clearly why the author dropped the 'men supporting women' tagline from this series.

Love interest could have been internally laughing his head off at her reaction, but showing support and being on her side as his 'public face'. Laughing right after the incident would also have been fine, but he (and his cronies) keep it going for ages. Not joining in with the jibes towards her would have also shown him in a far better light. He could have laughed after the incident, then just reminded her that she's no longer human so doesn't have to fear any more and that its natural that she's still having human reactions, which should have been directed at his cronies. But no, he joined in, in a pretty demeaning way with their jibes at her and the drawn out 'lets make fun of the MC for being scared.'

Later on in the book, one of the others reminds her that its the female of their species that are the compassionate ones. I was waiting for MC to be 'yeah, you lot really made me see that trait with your drawn out unpleasant reactions to me for being scared.' But not a peep.
I was reading and thinking 'I really see why the females of their species decided to leave these naturally violent and without compassion males and hook up with human males instead. At least with humans its not a genetic trait so you can find good guys. MC should do the same, maybe try to find her mothers kin while she's at it to help with her Shadow Warrior side.'

Authors really shouldn't make me want to see the MC hook up with anyone but the love interest and to dump them if they were stupid enough to hook up, after the LI's true colours are shown.
Since in plot, it was all of the females who left, its highly unlikely that all were non mated, so its not even like there isn't species precedence for getting fed up with the (jerk) males of their kind and leaving mates to find better for yourself and future daughters.

LI got a tiny bit of actual ribbing for a tiny scene, (not prolonged mean spirited jibes re a fear), from his second in command, (and of course no demeaning his reaction from the MC), a bit later in the book. But his 'never living down' (he actually thinks of it in those terms) re MC adopting a kitten and his giving in to that & rescuing them all at her behest, is hardly akin to being bullied over an instinctual fear reaction.

For me the MC soon after turning out to be 'special' even among the rare (1 in 100 of their species are Shadow Warriors of the females, for the males its 99 of 100 have the Shadow Warrior gene) female Shadow Warriors, couldn't redeem the LI for me. I don't care that the jerks, including LI, are all now kneeling before her and oh so impressed. She needs to find someone who actually loves her and won't use her fears to demean her in front of his cronies.

I also didn't like it that the LI who had been trained by his uncle to take over from him, if needed, was happy to thrown the MC in at the deep end when her new powers hit and turns out she's their queen. This jerk got trained from being a kid in how to rule, but oh no MC is supposed to automatically know to give orders at the debrief, that going around the table letting people just start to talk is wrong. When she finally looks at LI and is 'you start' after the males can't handle a non direct request, he's all 'finally, she gave me an order.'
Also its not consistent, second in command called her Queen, she objected to that with 'don't call me that', so jerk LI is all 'yes your highness'.... Only royals get that moniker, so he's knowingly disobeyed an order by playing semantics, yet then it goes into the above part of the scene.

She shouldn't have to ask her LI for help, he should be privately teaching her how to be a leader, just as he was trained, but they jump 2 weeks and he's still not helping her. MC POV is its because she's being stubborn in not asking for help in the hope he'll take back his role as leader.
Except she did ask for help, at the first meeting after her unwanted promotion. She didn't look at him and say 'help me with this meeting', no she just said 'help', so no time frame. So he should if he actually was obeying her orders, not just happy to be amused watching her flail, be helping by training her, as he was trained to lead. Help from your queen is an order to help her, but he's being very choosy about what things he's taking as an order from his so called mate.

And again, they're trying to force her to conform to 'male' Shadow Warrior behaviour, with being disrespectful and such, this is part of LI ignoring her order to help her with the leadership stuff. ---- Does MC point out that she's female, and how does he (& his cronies) know that his male way of leading is what females of their species do, no she just treats whatever he says as being right.

Oh honey of course he loves you. He thought he had just lucked out with finding the 'only' female of their species and being able to father 'pure-bloods' on then turned out you are an even rarer female and so queen, who he can and so easily does manipulate. Your ancestor was also one of the very rare, (since its genetic) and she left the males of your species, maybe even one she was mated to, to actually find compassionate males for her descendants. Poor female must be rolling in her grave, that her granddaughter is back in the control of such males.

As queen, she should have looked at her so called mate after the 'forcing you to be alpha' (so domineering / violent) stunt and said 'Females rule differently.' Then headed back to the meeting instead of doing the 'I loves yous' and told the assembled meeting that she was promoting LI to act as her commander, since he's second in command. As such he'll be handling everything like he had before and then briefing her as needed and relaying her orders in future meetings. Then looked her mate dead in the eye and said 'females do things smarter, not just with dominance violence like you males, remember that if you don't want me to do as my ancestors did and leave you behind.'

Oh nice, someone who knows her maternal grandmother has shown up on the mainland at one of the outposts with their people and got a message to them that she wants to meet MC.

Them alone after get the news.
MC 'I'm scared'.
LI 'I've got your back.'

Me 'sure, if it involves scared about meeting unknown family and said in private, but if you show fear of in public, I'll join in an evening of picking on you and demeaning your instinctive reaction with my cronies.'
I wonder if we'd have had the same reaction re the fear she showed if she'd been realised to be queen before then. Although given that she's not even mentioned his behaviour then as not being okay, he'd probably have still been a jerk and she still a doormat in letting it slide.

I think that's what really gets to me about that plot, all it seems to have been was a way to have them all be nasty to MC about a natural fear. There was no pay off with her having it out with him about his jibe re training her like a pet, etc. If he'd said he should have handled it better and didn't mean to cross the line to demeaning and bullying and such. That he's too used to that behaviour with his men and he didn't think of it from her POV being his mate and not a violent with no compassion male. Then I'd probably be reading the next book. But it was just left apart from two thoughts by him (one re her climbing him in her fear and one re her and what scared her, common comparison, then realising that didn't work so not even him being sorry for his hurtful actions) and his in no way comparable tiny moment of being ribbed by his second in command.

MC now being queen of them all, isn't a pay off, IMHO. Nor is her LI being all 'I love you, I got you these boots to replace the brand you just got that were ruined', when no apology for being a jerk.
Sure, sure he got them for you when he was unhappy that you followed your nature of being compassionate... That is part of being a female of his species, that he wants you to embrace, but oh no, not the parts that don't match the male of the species, not the compassion. -- He's a hypocrite.
She at the same time, with the completely forgotten fear reaction behaviour, got them both necklaces, one saying king and the other queen.... because she loves him and his replacing the boots even when angry at her for you know, being what she's genetically meant to be, shows how much he loves her.

Funny how they talked about LI being upset and why and properly handled that plot re his feelings, but never had an 'after the event' about MC's rightful upset. No she was 'sulking' and that's the end of it but LI's issues with what MC does, oh no that's discussed because his feelings are important and so much so that it comes back up later for the above plot.
You can't even use the excuse that she risked her life, like they pulled on her re her instinctive compassionate actions, since its what they've been training her to do, be a warrior! They pushed and manipulated her into that, when they thought she was just a clumsy human!

He keeps saying he 'loves' her, yet from the start he's been wanting to change her to fit in with what he wants and his life-stlye. It wasn't so bad when it started, because MC being taught to better centre her body to not be clumsy helped her and the author used it as her proving she could do the training. Which was the manipulation of the LI and his crony that the MC fell for, but still it was better than LI just continuing to want to change the female he supposedly loves and MC just going along with it.

I wish the author had used a version of the above scene I wrote instead. MC would have been acting as the queen, as LI and his cronies want, but still on her own terms, not just obeying the LI in what she should be all the time!

The men are only supportive of the women in these books, when the women are acting as the men think they should be, so its good that the author dropped that tagline!

Beast is the 3rd book in the post-apocalyptic world book series. And Beast is what this book is. I usually devour (yes, pun attended) Holly’s books. This one I did take my time. It was a welcome escape from the real world.
I love series where we get different main characters each book. Yet there are times we just want to see where the main characters go. This series will do that for you. We still follow King and Marinah into the world of the Shadow Warriors.
The U.S. government is corrupted and the Shadow Warriors not only have to fight the Hellhounds, now the U.S. government. The Shadow Warriors work and band with the Humans to overthrow the government and battle the Hellhounds.
We find out in this 3rd book where Marinah fits into the Shadow Warrior’s world. I was super excited for this book and I was not disappointed. Marinah is an awesome and strong female amongst the Shadow Warriors. She is the pioneer on where females fit in their world and she kicks butts and takes names.
You will not be disappointment with this book or series.

**This book was provided to Nerd Girl Official in exchange for an honest review.**

The Beast by Holly S Roberts is number 3 in her Genetically Modified Series.

Talk about a wild ride! This rollercoaster takes you through twists and turns, ups & downs, and again leaves you breathless at times. You never see the twists coming, and the turns take you places you never even thought of! The entire premise makes you rethink what you know about good & bad, holy & evil.

As Marinah continues to grow and learn about her new normal, and King tries to keep up with her, their world is expanding as more survivors are found. These books, this Series, is absolutely must-read and need to be in your auto-click lists. I cannot wait for the next installment! Needless to say, another 5 stars!

This is Book 3 in the Genetically Modified series. I just have to say that this series just keeps getting better with each book she adds to it. Marinah and King are trying to help the outposts in their fight with the Federation. This is playing havoc with their honeymoon. Plus, she’s going to train one of the human kids! Who has time to do anything? Not her. We find out how strong Marinah really is in this story and it’s going to really surprise you. She is such an amazing Shadow Warrior and I hope one day to grow up to be just like her. You won’t be disappointed when you read this book because there’s something in it to keep everyone happy. I highly recommend you read this first two in the series so you will know what the background of the books are. So, what are you waiting for? Go get it right now and start reading. You won’t be disappointed!

Beast

Great continuation in the Marinah and King Saga and a beautiful twist to change the planet field. Be ready for one or more books because you will realize quickly this is bit the end. Love the secondary characters and few mates that have been shown. Hellspawn is quickly becoming my fave and can wait to see her story develop.
The Federation is Hell bent in destroying Marinah and the Shadow Warriors and she has her eyes set on President Barnes. Lets see how this post apocalypse story continues.

I LOVED THIS!!!! I didn't think this series could possibly get any better because I love it so much but Holly S Roberts managed somehow to do just that! I am ready for the next one already and couldn't put it down until I had the whole book read. I'm not one for spoilers though I love discussing books with those who have read them! Marinah and King are great! There are more developments with a few others and a few new characters as well. Run and get this series!!!

What an excellent series!

I am so very happy to have found Holly S Roberts' writing. I too am a police officer, and as Holly explained in the Afterward, I love how she wrote in Marinah's POV. When you lead, there are so many things to think about (true multitasking). Holly gives you insight into how leaders are trained and this series is a winner! This may be a story of Post Apocalyptic Earth, but it is a Holly S Roberts kind of love story.

Brings out the Beast in us.

We all have those moments in life, you know, when you can't hold it back. That beast just has to come out. This book has that. Wow! Marinah's beast has to come out. Yet Marinah has such control. I love her tenderness, yet firmness with Ruth. This book touched my heart. If you've looking for a great read. Please get this book. From a True Fan... Pam James.

This is Beast, book 3 of Genetically Modified
Series written by Holly S Roberts/D’Elen McClain. I am loving this series! The inner Beasts and fighting the Hellhounds is keeping the Shadow Warriors quite busy. Marinah is struggling to accept her new role as a member of the guard. Just wait for her next struggle! I can’t wait to find out more about these Shadow Warriors and how they came to be.

I enjoyed this instalment to the series. In this book we get to see Marinah in full blown warrior mode although she's in denial for most of it and this is down to lack of confidence. With the help of King and even some of the warriors Marinah is able to come to terms eventually of her true nature and self. Can't wait for the next book... if there is one ... I hope so 😊

Loved it!

I read all three, one right after the other, and now can't wait for the next book! What an awesome series by a phenomenal author I haven't read before. I will definitely be checking out her other stories. I would definitely rank her as one of the best authors I've read on the kindle in the last few years.

Great Science Fiction

Great series I couldn't stop read all three books back to back. The characters grab you and just pull you in. Some people have issues with the science part but since I read almost every genre zombies, vampires and all types of monsters call to me. A completely different take on monsters which I truly loved and appreciated. Hats off to the authors

So exciting

I love how Marinah is evolving right in front of everyone. Her insecurities are so normal being from a male dominated world it would be hard to start giving orders being the only warrior woman.

Also leaving that real Marinah and her cat were both included is so sweet. I hope they're in fact reunited 💓💔💖

LOVE LOVE LOVE this book!!! Highly recommended!! ANOTHER 5 star read by Holly S Roberts!!

WOW!!! Where do I begin in describing just how much I LOVE this book! First, I have to say that I fell in love with the first 2 books in the duet with Shadow and Warrior so I was immediately hooked! Plus, there isn't that many books that make me laugh out loud so when I'm fortunate enough to find an author like, Holly S Roberts who has such a GREAT sense of humor that comes out in every book she writes, as well as being a FANTASTIC storyteller, I'm going to be a huge fan! I also know that Marinah herself, had a big part in making me laugh, as well 😊 If you enjoy reading a great story with action, adventure, intensity, humor and a kick ass heroine, you're going to fall in love with Beast and Marinah!!! I only wish I could give this book more than 5 stars because it's THAT great of a book!! Thank you once again, Holly S Roberts for being a BIG reason why I LOVE to read SO much!!!
