The Swiss Mishap

Rate this book
For the last twelve years, more than half her life, Lainey Peterson has prepared to design, create, and produce quality chocolate bars. But when she discovers her chocolate internship at Switzerland's prestigious Alpine Foods has been canceled, she vows to do whatever it takes to get to Chocolate.

Yves Claremont, a young, ambitious department chair, would sacrifice everything to rise to vice president at Alpine Foods and redeem his father's name. Impressed with Lainey's resume and charming determination, Yves offers her an internship in his Pet Care department, promising a recommendation for Chocolate if she does well.

Lainey is drawn to the enigmatic and passionate Yves Claremont. He cannot deny his growing attraction to her. But inter-office relationships are strictly forbidden by Alpine Foods, and a perceptive co-worker, jealous of Yves' success, will undermine Yves and Lainey any way he can.

I’ve never read a book quite like this one. I loved everything about it! The characters, the plot, the setting, and most importantly, the chocolate, all were fantastic!

In the first chapter we meet Lainey. She’s optimistic and just thrilled about her internship in Chocolate at Alpine Foods in Switzerland. But, unfortunately, her internship in Chocolate fell through. And she had no idea. Lainey is adaptable, and that’s one of the fun things about her. I had to laugh at her struggles in the first few chapters. She has none of her things due to a luggage mix-up. The language and culture barrier are another issue. And the man who ends up her boss…he drives her crazy!

But chocolate is always there for Lainey, and she applies it liberally. There were many times in Switzerland when the situation just seemed right for more chocolate.

I love that you also see the events through the eyes of Yves, Lainey’s boss in Pet Care. That’s where she ended up when her internship in Chocolate fell through. So funny! There were so many laugh out loud moments in the relationship between Lainey and Yves.

The plot of this one is a lot of fun! Who doesn’t want to read about working for a chocolate company? It’s a book you definitely want to read for yourself!

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Chocolate is a girl's best friend.
The Swiss Mishap by Amey Zeigler is a book for people that love to speak French, eat chocolate, and of course, adore pets. We follow Elaine through her four-month internship at Alpine Foods from the end of August to the end of November.
Elaine Peterson
Elaine, Lainey, Peterson is a recent college graduate who received a four-month internship at Alpine Foods working in their Chocolate department. At least that is what she thought. Instead, Lainey is working in the Pet Care department, which is a big problem. She is deathly afraid of dogs but, Lainey loves chocolate. Throughout her internship, Lainey develops feelings for her boss, which is against the rules. So, now she thinks that maybe she isn't cut out to work for Alpine.
Likes and Dislikes
My likes for Lainey are

She's a big chocolate lover.
Lainey evolved throughout the novel and changing the goal that she has had since she was little.
She is trusting Yves enough with her secret.

My only dislike for Lainey is that she should have told Yves how she felt, and then they could have worked something out.
Yves Claremont
Yves Claremont is making headway in Alpine Foods not only to bring his last name into good graces again but because he wants to succeed. He decided to give Lainey an internship within his department because he thought that she would do well within his department. One big problem though is he didn't expect to spend a lot of time with her. He likes to keep his personal and business life separate but with Lainey around that line is blurred.
Likes and Dislikes
My likes for Yves are

Despite being wealthy, he doesn't care about those things.
Keeps his personal and business lives separate and doesn't like to intermingle those two.
Tries in his way to woo Lainey.

The only thing I  dislike about Yves is that once he figured out that he likes Lainey more than as a coworker that he should have told her.
Four Stars
The Swiss Mishap by Amey Zeigler is a four-star rating. It was fantastic, but I was a bit confused by some of the French sayings. Besides that, it was an excellent read. Ms. Ziegler does a tremendous job of making me think while I was reading that I was in Switzerland.

Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of The Swiss Mishap by Amey Zeigler.

Until the next time,

Karen Signature

Happy Reading!

Lainey is a serious chocoholic. She heads for Switzerland for an exciting internship with Alpine Foods. But there's a problem - when she arrives, the chocolate division has lost their funding, and she ends up in pet food. With Yves. She has an series of mishaps throughout the book - in the first chapter alone, she refers to her new boss as Madame (Eve as opposed to Yves), faints, and eats Yves' lunch. This was a really nice book to read - watching Yves and Lainey grow from employer/employee to friends to more. Lainey did an awful lot of growing up, as well, and she did it in a different country and culture. This is my first read from this author - not the last!

A romance that will leave you satisfied!
Lainey arrives in Switzerland, ready to begin her internship at a chocolate manufacturer, Alpine Foods. Unfortunately, a mix up lands her in the pet foods division. Fortunately, she is working under the supervision of that division's head, the handsome Yves Claremont. As she works with Yves, she learns a lot of herself, as well as that some people are more than they seem.
The title, Swiss Mishap, is perfect for this sweet story. I loved the foreign location. Ms. Zeigler's writing style pulled me into the story so deeply, I could practically taste the chocolate.
Highly recommended if you're looking for a tasty, light-hearted summer read.

The Swiss Mishap is an awesome read! I was not sure how I would like it at first but was hooked within the first couple of chapters. I found Lainey and Yves to be fun and entertaining characters. The setting is wonderfully beautiful and the story is so delightfully sweet.
I highly recommend The Swiss Mishap. It is getting a well deserved five plus stars from me. I would love to read more like this from Amey Zeigler in the near future.

This was a delightful read! First time reading this author, but definitely will read more of her.

The hero was handsome and swoon-worthy. The heroine was fun and the "mishaps" paired well with the romance.

The details were great, the characters and their connection was believable. Definitely recommend picking up this fun read!

Lainey is in love, and has been since she was nine......with chocolate. Her whole life was devoted to studying all about chocolate and her dream came true. She was going to intern at the most prestigious company in Switzerland. However nothing was like what she expected. This is a funny and heart warming story of her struggles between chocolate and finding love.

Since I'm the author, this is probably an unfair review, but I happen to really love this book. I wrote it about one of the most defining experiences in my life, living in a foreign country is difficult and a brave thing to do. It's wonderful to share this experience with you. This is my heart.

Fainting at the feet of a gorgeous man may sound romantic but it’s less than ideal when that same man is about to interview Lainey for a job that could lead to a future defined by chocolate. Not just any chocolate. Swiss chocolate!

This was a fun book but I think Lainey may have found the meaning of ‘too much chocolate” tho she would probably disagree that such a thing exists. Seriously, her online ID is Chocophile, and she certainly knows her way around a chocolate aisle, but it should possibly be Chocoholic. She’s a true addict to her comfort food of choice.

Chocolate love aside, Lainey was a likable enough character but trouble seems to have her number. There are some funny moments in the story and in one scene I was just sure I was about to hear Ross Geller yelling “PIVOT”.

Yves is the very definition of European, completely work driven and goal oriented. He has plans and a girl like Lainey wasn’t even the radar. Until she’s all that he can think about, look for reasons to spend time with and talk to even when she frustrates him to no end. Their HEA would be hard fought…by both of them much less various outside antagonists.

It wasn’t easy but great love stories rarely are. Lainey is a bit hard headed and Yves doesn’t lack in the pride and stubbornness department himself. It was a bit of an up and down ride. Just when I thought they would give into their attraction, one or the other would back off or they’d be rudely interrupted. The story lags a bit in the middle as they’re trying to come to terms with how to deal with their attraction. Or maybe it was just that there was so much going on, I felt pulled from the story.

This is story for readers who enjoy the slow burn of new relationship. Once they finally give in, it’s refreshing and satisfying.

This book whisked me away on a sweet, romantic, delectable, savory journey to Switzerland, the Chocolate Capital of the World!!!

This book has a creative story line, fantastic writing style that flows with meticulous and vivid scenes, well-developed characters, is evenly paced, and keeps you completely entertained through the last page.

Lainey’s life has been pretty much wrapped up in chocolate and she has finally scored an internship of her dreams in Switzerland at Alpine Foods. When Lainey arrives super excited to start her shift in the chocolate department at Alpine Foods, she is heartbroken to discover her internship has been cancelled. However, the department chair, Yves, offers her an opportunity to still work for the company, but in the Pet Care department, and if she does well there, she might be able to then transfer back to the chocolate department. Although, Lainey has a fear of dogs, dating way back to an attack when she was a kid, working at Alpine Foods, has been her dream and she is not going to let anything interfere with that.

This book was a delicious, enticing, enjoyable, entertaining, hilarious, inspiring, and satisfying read!

I really enjoyed the main characters, Lainey and Yves. They were likable, relatable, and genuine. I really liked Lainey as she was smart, determined, passionate, enthusiastic, caring, and stubborn. I loved her love for chocolate. I loved how she associated it with so many fond memories and how she even used chocolate as a security blanket to help her get through difficult times. It was interesting hearing her recall enjoying chocolate when she was a kid while using it to block out her parents rocky marriage, her dad’s struggling business, and her teenage drama years – it was all about the chocolate and how she wanted to bring that same level of love, comfort, and armor to others.

I also enjoyed Yves as he was ambitious, anxious, tenacious, sincere, persistent, and adamant. I really enjoyed Lainey and Yves together! There were definitely immediate sparks between these two and it was beautifully written in a romantic, enduring manner. Of course, there were still lots of witty banter and playful scenes between these two that made for some great LOL moments!!

I think the author did an excellent job on her character development as these characters were so real and personal on many levels!

A strong character development journey to root for and enjoy watching it unfold!

The author’s writing is strong and eloquently detailed. She really provided so much detail in her writing that it was easy to picture – especially of beautiful, picturesque Switzerland. I have never been before, but it is definitely on my bucket list now!

I also really enjoyed the funny, “Oh, those Americans,” scenes LOL!!! Lainey certainly got into some of those silly situations that only happen to Americans when they travel abroad – and they sure were entertaining!!!

There are some predictable scenes. However, there are still a couple unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!

This book is technically not part of a book series and can be read as a standalone.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it! I think all romantic comedy readers will like this book too! So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!

If your favoured reading material is a compelling tale with a good sprinkling of relationships, imperfection, romance, and humour then The Swiss Mishap by Amey Zeigler is a must-read for you!

From the get-go there was so much happening in this comedic, wonderful tale of romance! The story was told from two different perspectives: those of Lainey and Yves.

I was totally smitten with both protagonists. Lainey was smart, passionate and she had an amazing zest for life. Yves was ambitious, persistent, but was sincere. I totally adored the spark between the two of them and it was beautifully written with a romantic, endearing tone. Author, Amey Zeigler had really worked wonders with all of the characters in this fabulous story and I grew very fond of most of them, although there were one or two that were less than desirable. All had brilliant parts to play and even the baddies only added a little salt to this sweet, sugary tale.

Aside from the brilliant cast of characters, another selling point of A Swiss Mishap for me was its fabulous setting of Switzerland. Although I have never been there, I have had a longing to visit for quite some time. Amey Zeigler had a magical, eloquent way of articulating the ambience of the place, the surrounding area and the general way of life there. I was also entranced by the author’s portrayal of Lainey’s love for chocolate. It was fantastic reading how she associated it with so many fond memories and how she used chocolate as a security blanket to help her deal with the difficult times in her life.

The plot was awesome and moved along at a really comfortable pace and I loved the author’s general writing-style. There was no room for repetitiveness or boredom here! The story was funny and witty and there were many laugh-out-loud moments. I honestly can’t think of anything that dampened my enthusiasm for this fascinating tale.

I was rooting all the way through for Lainey and Yves, and Amey Zeigler rounded things off nicely which I really appreciated. It was very hard to say goodbye to them and I found myself wishing them well for the future.

I think this author is a force to be reckoned with and I am eagerly awaiting her next contribution. I recommend A Swiss Mishap without a flicker of hesitation, so don’t miss out!

Imagine flying halfway across the world, only to find out that your internship no longer exists and your best friend conveniently "forgot" to tell you. I probably would pass out, too.

And thus being Lainey's rocky ride now in the Pet Food division at Alpine Foods, instead of the Chocolate division, which was her true passion and goal. But having Yves for a boss may not be the worst thing in the world.

You can tell that Yves is somewhat amused by the American's antics and foibles, which will make you both cringe and laugh all at once. I can't help but like her and relate to her. Although, I do not have quite the obsession with chocolate that she does. I mean, I like chocolate, but she takes it to a whole other level for sure.

Lainey also is terrifed of dogs after having been attacked several years ago. I also understand this fear, only my attack was much less than hers and didn't require several years of therapy. I also still had dogs throughout my ordeal.

I also love the setting. I spent a few days along Lake Geneva some years ago, so this brings back some fond memories for me. I also get a kick out of the sprinklings of French words and phrasings for which I do not need a translation.

This story has the necessary ups and downs for such a formulaic feel-good story, and yet it is different enough from any other you may have read. I recommend having some chocolate on hand, with or without a glass of wine or your favorite alcoholic beverage as you consume this sweet treat.

Once again, Amey writes a killer story. I seldom read romance but I will always go for one of Amey's because she has never failed me. The Swiss Mishap had me hooked from the beginning! Sweet, romantic, and funny, this book certainly brightened my week.

Lainey lands in Switzerland only to find that her internship in the chocolate department at Alpine Foods had been cancelled. Luckily, she is given another opportunity to work for Alpine Foods...but in the pet department. Facing plenty of mishaps and misunderstandings, chocolate-loving (ok, more like chocoholic) Lainey learns the ins and out of her new role while trying to make a good impression on her stuck-up boss, Yves, with the hopes of getting a good recommendation to land a job in the chocolate department once her internship is over.

Lainey is such an awesome character. She's adaptable in such a crazy circumstance, is passionate about whatever she is doing, and is not afraid to give her opinion or suggestion. And on the other hand we have Yves, who seems to be the complete opposite. But once they get to know each other, they realize they're not all that different. Watching their relationship evolve was exciting and I'm happy for a happy ending! Now I need a sequel ASAP :)

My favorite part about Amey's stories is the little bits of herself that she incorporates. I think it's really awesome that this book was inspired by her own stay in Switzerland and she even included a chocolate mousse recipe at the end that she brought home from Switzerland herself (and it's a nod to a scene in the book where Lainey gets a chocolate mousse recipe from a stranger).

Chocolate (massive win already), Switzerland, Ambition, Passion and Romance are the key elements that are beautifully woven in Amey Zeigler's "The Swiss Mishap". This romantic comedy is very unique for it follows the conventions of the genre but is still unconventional in its own right. Lainey Peterson is a truly authentic character who apart from dealing with the challenges of being miles away from home is repeatedly conched (the metaphoric element and the story of Rodolphe Lindt is one of my favourites) but she still stands up despite every adversity. Her journey of self-reflection (with her numbering system) and her growth is remarkable and you cannot help but cheer her on. Where do I even begin with M.Claremont! He is a complex contradiction who has waged a personal battle with himself and his character shines at several key moments in the book. The lead characters interactions are very engaging and Amey aligns this very well to cobblestone roads and beautiful landscapes of Switzerland. The ending is funny, heartfelt and oozes with sweetness. I cannot wait to read more of Amey's work. A 5 star read!

This was such a lovely escape, and the perfect substitute for travel.

Laini's internship seems plagued by disaster. She's thrust into a situation that requires her to constantly pivot and recalibrate. She loves chocolate, and Switzerland and Alpine Food are the perfect stepping stone to a job in the industry.

But Laini's plans are thwarted when she is assigned as an intern to Pet Care rather than chocolate. To make matters worse, her boss is a tall, urbane, handsome drink of water as delectable as any chocolate bar.

Yves sees something in Laini from their first meeting. Her earnestness and dedication impress him. Her curves and her fire and her sly humor entrance him. He knows he must keep his distance- his gorgeous intern is a distraction he can ill afford if he wants the promotion he has been chasing. But circumstances keep throwing them together.

I loved all of the details in the book about Swiss culture and the chocolate industry. I loved seeing the slow burn romance unfold and villain get his just desserts.

For the Love of Chocolate

I really enjoyed this story. I love how the author describes things in relation to chocolate, totally relatable. Lainey heads to Switzerland for an internship with one of her favorite chocolate companies. When she gets there she is told her internship was canceled. After fainting in the lobby she is interviewed for a different department and gets the job. Lainey goes through several trials and tribulations working for her boss Yves. Then when things seem to be going well everything falls apart. There is a happy ending to the story, which I enjoyed. I highly recommend this book.

I love chocolate and the Swiss mishap!

This is such a sweet story. The characters are so relatable. Lainey is just a sweetheart who suffers so many missteps in a foreign country. This novel was the best form of entertainment for me during a stressful week. I laughed out loud, it tugged at my heart. I loved the banter between Yves and Lainey. Also I was throughly grossed out but what Lainey would endure for love. You'll have to read it to see what she goes though. Thank Amey Zeigler for creating such a lovable sweet romance. I can see why it has earned awards. This is perfect for fans of Emily in Paris. (But a clean version. In my opinion that makes it better.)

A memorable read from beginning to end, The Swiss Mishap, kept me turning the pages. Lainey’s plans go awry when her dream internship under the Alpine Foods chocolate division takes an unexpected turn into the pet food department headed by the distant, ambitious Yves. Lainey’s indomitable spirit in the face of hardships makes her an endearing soul, while the gradual thawing of Yves’s cold exterior make for two page-turning character arcs. Despite company policy of not dating within Alpine Foods, the two feel an undeniable attraction that is both forbidden and believable. I can’t recommend this story enough to lovers of romance and chocolate!
