Club Whisper #4

A Dom and His Gentleman

Rate this book
A Club Whisper Novel

Silver fox Curtis is everything baker Andrew could want in a sub, and their chemistry is off the charts. But as a wealthy and successful gallery owner, Curtis intimidates Andrew and challenges his dominant nature. Can Andrew get used to a sub with a much higher social status?

British noble Curtis Morris has all but given up on finding his perfect Dom when he walks into a bakery and meets Andrew Granger—smoldering hot, new to Miami, into the lifestyle, and with kinks that align perfectly with Curtis’s own.

Andrew grew up poor and doesn’t know if he can handle a sub with so much more money, even if he’s insanely attracted to Curtis. To make matters worse, Curtis’s preferred club, Whisper, is far beyond Andrew’s financial means. Still, Andrew doesn’t want to lose Curtis to his own hang-ups, not when Curtis is far from the elitist snob Andrew expected. But Andrew keeps messing up, and with Curtis’s rich ex visiting with the hopes of winning him back, he and Curtis will need all the help they can get to make their romance of opposites work out.

XENIA MELZER was born and raised in a small village in the south of Bavaria. As one of nature’s true chocoholics, she’s always in search of the perfect chocolate experience. So far, she’s had about a dozen truly remarkable ones. Despite having been in close proximity to the mountains all her life, she has never understood why so many people think snow sports are fun. There are neither chocolate nor horses involved and it’s cold by definition, so where’s the sense? She does not like beer either and has never been to the Oktoberfest—no quality chocolate there.

Even though her mind is preoccupied with various stories most of the time, Xenia has managed to get through school and university with surprisingly good grades. Right after school she met her one true love who showed her that reality is capable of producing some truly amazing love stories itself.

While she was having her two children, she started writing down the most persistent stories in her head as a way of relieving mommy-related stress symptoms. As it turned out, the stress relief has now become a source of the same, albeit a positive one.

When she’s not writing, she translates other authors’ manuscripts to German, enjoys riding and running, spending time with her kids, and dancing with her husband.

Ugh I think it's time to give up on this series and stop hoping that the magic that happened with the first book will happen again. I can't seem to resist though, because even as I write this I know I'll read Emilo's book when it's his turn to get one.

So, about this fourth book, we have two mature guys, which was nice, meeting and falling in love super fast, which I wasn't so crazy about. If you've read the previous books you'll already know Curtis. He's a gallery owner, extremelly rich and he is also Collin's agent. He is an experienced sub and a member of Club Whisper.

Andrew is a new character, if I'm not mistaken, that recently moved to the city and opened a bakery. He is in a completely different social and financial status than Curtis and that's what caused most of their problems. Andrew has some issues with rich people that go all the way back to his childhood and his dad, and even though he let them control his behavior in the beginning he soon managed to reign them in and start working on them.

My main issue was that everything seemed supeficial and there were times that the characters became preachy. The circle of friends that are always there for each other is very nice as an idea but here it was tiring. Leeland was cracking his knuckles left and right as an intmidation techinique and Collin talked and talked and talked, which is a trade of his character, but it made him seem immature. Dean and Richard were of course my favourite characters again and their presence here made the book more interesting for me.

The relationship between Curtis and Adrew moved very fast and it's no secret that I'm not a fan of insta-love or insta-relationship. I like it when the characters take their time with each other and move at a slower pace.

Add the unbelievable, evil ex to the mix and I was about done with the story. Jasper only had one layer as a character and that was it, there was nothing deeper, not one good quality about him. He was there to create some drama, earn sympathy for Curtis and make Andrew think about his issues. He did all that and then he left in a very inticlimactic scene.

As I said in the beginning I can't seem to give up trying to find an equal of the first book in this series and since I'm already intriqued about Emilio and Garrett I'll read their story, provided they will have one together. There's a chance that Emilio will get one with someone else, but I'd much prefer they resolve their problems and end up together.

A relationship where the social status of both partners is very different can be challenge enough, but it is even more intense to have it happen for a D/s couple where the Dom is a successful baker who grew up poor and the sub is a wealthy gallery owner with roots in British nobility. It may look like an unlikely pairing, and the main characters certainly have their work cut out for them if they want to make it as a couple, but it definitely made for interesting reading. In line with the first three novels of this series, ‘A Dom and His Gentleman’ offers a combination of men struggling with their understanding of what roles they should play in and out of the bedroom, a surprisingly complementary match of opposites, and a sweet yet kinky romance as they explore the “rules” of their budding relationship.

This author is another first for me. I really enjoyed this story for the most part. One thing I do have to commend...it was said over and over several times even, that every relationship in the Lifestyle is different, just as it is for every relationship anywhere, in any situation. People are different the world over and it's okay to not like or be in favor of everything, but there is always the need to be respectful of the other person's right to differ from yours. When Andrew tried out a harder core club, he knew right off that it wasn’t for him, and that was alright. Everyone had their own type of kink and what they want and don’t want from it. I was glad to see his choices were respected and Andrew wasn't made to feel bad because of them. Both Andrew and Curtis had individually pretty much given up on the whole "relationship" thing. Both are in their 40s and their lives are consumed by their jobs. It doesn’t help that one is a Dom, the other a sub, that are still looking for the right "fit" for each of them. After Curtis’s experience with his ex, Jasper, Curtis found that finding a good Dom and trusting that person explicitly, was really very hard for him. He doesn’t want back in another bad situation like he had before. Then the minute Andrew lays his eyes on Curtis, he knew in his entire being, that he just had to know this man. Thanks to Curtis’s talkative friend, Collin, Andrew learned that Curtis was a sub. Absolutely perfect the way things progressed afterwards. Differences can make a difference if you allow them to, but you have to be willing to get past things and overcome your fears and doubts in order to move forward. It’s not easy. A lesson these guys had to learn. And learn it they did.

I think this author is another first for me. I enjoyed it for the most part. I'm racking my brain trying to think of what I needed from it, but I'm drawing a blank. One thing I do have to commend, it was said over and over several times that every relationship in the lifestyle is different. I'm so happy for that. When Andrew tried out a harder core club, he knew it wasn't for him, and that's ok. Everyone has their kink and what they want and don't, and I was happy to see it wasn't a shaming thing.
Both Andrew and Curtis have kind of given up on the whole relationship thing. Both are in their 40s and their lives are consumed by their jobs. It doesn't help that one is a Dom, the other a sub, looking for the right fit for them. And after Curtis's ex, Jasper, finding a good dom is really hard. Because he doesn't want back in a bad situation. But the minute Andrew lays his eyes on Curtis, he knew he had to know this man. And thanks to Curtis's talkative friend Collin, Andrew knew Curtis was a sub. Perfect. But their first date was a disaster. Andrew came to realize Curtis is made of money and it's uncomfortable for him. After all, he's the Dom. It takes a friend to make him see his mistake and Andrew does all he can to make amends and try again. Just when things are really getting good, Curtis's ex shows up and throws a wrench in things. And Curtis has had enough. But will he be able to get through to Andrew in time that he's all Curtis wants? Or will their differences be too much.
It's hard to be on both sides of this. Curtis has to be careful, in case someone is just after his money. Andrew has to be careful so no one thinks he's a money grubber. And being a Dom, it's hard on his ego that he's not the one providing. For Curtis, he's stuck. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. He can't help he comes from money or that he invested wisely. But he doesn't flaunt it or run it in people's faces. Sure he has nice things, but it's not to be flashy or to show off. He's just comfortable. Andrew is the one who has to adjust. He has to learn that having money doesn't make the other person weaker or less than.
Differences can make a difference if you allow them. But you have to be willing to get past things and overcome your fears and doubts in order to move forward. It's not easy. A lesson these guys had to learn.

Another great add to the series. Curtis and Andrew's story is unique and something I haven't read before. The Dom/Sub dynamic mixed with age and income with the Sub being ahead. With their chemistry being off the charts they know they want to keep fighting for each other. I loved this new type of dynamic for me and already want to re-read it. I voluntarily reviewed an 'Advance Author’s Copy' of this book.

3.5 🌟 rounded up

I really enjoyed this book. It's a great addition to the Club Whisper series, and I look forward to seeing more to come. But I couldn't give this a five star rating for a few reasons.

First of all, and I have said this in earlier reviews, there is just too much repetition of phrases and terminology, both in this story itself, and also being brought forward from the previous books. Secondly, IMO, I felt that Andrew came across as a, maybe not weak, per se, but disappointing Dom.

Curtis is in his late forties, an educated and professional businessman, and makes quite good money for himself. He is also a naturally born British nobleman. He is not snobbish or pretentious in any way, but he cannot help who he is; nor does he want to. He has been alone for many years since his last Master abandoned him for a younger model. He understands that his status has a lot to do with why the affluent clientele of Whisper aren't interested in being his full-time Dom, but it still rankles that they cannot just see what a good sub he is.

Andrew is new in town, has opened a bakery, and lives in the apartment above the store. He has been searching for a decent BDSM club, but he automatically bypassed Whisper because of the fees. He was raised with enough, but it was drilled into his psyche that the rich and their kind were not to be trusted. That "they" were a different type of person than his people were, and the classes should never mingle.

When Andrew meets Curtis, he has no way of knowing anything about him, other than the fact that he thinks he's hot and he wants him badly. Unfortunately, when he realizes that Curtis is from a different background than himself, he self-destructs, and potentially looses his one chance with the man of his dreams due to his own bigotry. His new friend Tim, another Dom new to town, tells him what a colossal fool he's been, and they form a plan.

With the help of Curtis's friends, he decides to put the horrible date behind him. But, when he is met with a sincere apology, he chooses to take a chance on what he had been hoping would turn into a beautiful future. Things go well, and the relationship moves very quickly. However, Andrew still hasn't fully come to terms with the differences between their statuses.

When Curtis's ex comes slithering into town expecting Curtis to just give him what he demands, he finds that Curtis is not so easily swayed. However, when he uses dirty tactics and speaks to Andrew, things start to go sideways again. Curtis leans on his friends for support and encouragement, and comes to a decision on his own.

Although all ends up well in the end, this is just another example of how Andrew lost more of my respect. Instead of his sub being able to give him his worries, regardless of how they are handled or by whom, Curtis did not feel safe enough to put his burdens in Andrew's hands. HOWEVER, I did enjoy the little surprise scene Andrew had for Curtis when they made up. And of course, the two men get their HEA in the end.

Happy reading!

This is a really enjoyable & heartwarming MM romance with an intriguing story-line & a well-paced plot. The characters are mature & well-developed with unique personalities. They continue to develop throughout the story-line to become emotional strong individuals who complement each other. There is good support from the secondary characters. There are some characters crossovers from the previous books but this book is complete & standalone.
There is: a male baker & conservative dominant (Andrew Granger) is highly attracted to a male submissive (Curtis Morris) but discovers he is a rich & successful businessman & is rather insecure about the financial aspects of the relationship then Curtis’s ex-boyfriend (Jasper) appears with some devious intentions, friendship, humor, a gay BDSM club (Club Whisper), some twists, intrigue, drama, humor, attractions, doubts, suspicions, verbal disagreements, memories, domination/submission, BDSM scenes, contracts, anxiety, hope, a unpleasant surprise visitor, attempted manipulations, threats, caring friends, confrontations, jealousy, insults, decisions, apologies, insecurities, compromises, some steam, love, happiness & a well-deserved satisfying ending. I would recommend this MM romance & the other books in the series.

Andrew had just moved to Miami. His bakery was up and running without any problems, now he needed to find a club. His first venture into a club went wrong. He found a new friend but nothing more. Andrew wondered if he would ever find a place to hang out and a sub. Meanwhile, his bakery is gaining quite a reputation as the best bakery in Miami. Andrew never dreamed he find his perfect mate inside his bakery.
Yes, this is an adult book. Adult themes and explicit language is used. Having said that, let me tell you, this book is amazing. It's romance, the story underneath the story is well worth the read. The characters are so well defined you'll believe you know these men. The writing is very well done. It's easy to get lost in this story. This book allows readers to see how a healthy relationship can be. This one needs to be in your TBR pile. Step out of your comfort zone and you'll be glad you did.

I found no issues.

I gave this one 4 cheers out of 4 because it needs to be longer. The author provided a copy of the book but I chose to review it.

This is a competently written story with a diverse cast of secondary characters and it has some very nice moments between the two MC’s, Curtis and Andrew. On the whole, though, I remain unconvinced and slightly unimpressed.

My main problem with this book is Andrew. I can understand him being somewhat insecure but his hang-ups about money are out of proportion, to say nothing about his struggle to overcome his seemingly ingrained ideas of (toxic) masculinity. He doesn’t handle either of those issues well at all and it directly impacts how he treats Curtis, not once, not twice…

Curtis and Andrew go from an awful first date to I love you’s at breakneck speed and I just couldn’t believe it. It felt forced. Things also get too melodramatic for my taste once Curtis’s ex, Jasper, makes a reappearance.

A Dom and His Gentleman is the fourth book in the Club Whisper series by Xenia Melzer. Curtis and Andrew are great characters. Older and confident on what they are looking for in D/s relationship, these two are a perfect match... once Andrew can get over the fact that his sub in a confident, successful and rich man in his own right. Their scenes together were sweet and then steamy when they got into the scenes. I really do love the supporting characters as well that we have met in this series. The story itself is fun, sweet, sexy... with a little drama and alot of humor. A fantastic read.

The vast majority of romance novels are highly formulaic, so judging this book based on that isn't fair. However, this book has no exciting characters, no interesting side stories, a one dimensional villain who barely qualifies as such, and a bakery that's closed on weekends. That's what really broke the suspension of disbelief for me. Not the stupidly rich characters or the near-instant declarations of love. No, it was the idea that someone would start a bakery and keep it closed on the two busiest days of the week.

I like how we seen them meet but then it isn't all straight shot to happiness. There are a few bumps in the road due in a large part by Andrew's own hangups. I like how we get to see that not everyone falls easily into the preconceived ideas about how a Dom and Sub should relate to one another. These are both strong individuals who together make a better unit. But these men to match each others needs well and communication seems to be the key to keep things moving along.

Curtis finally gets his HEA! I've been curious throughout the series as to who Curtis would end up with. Andrew doesn't seem to fit him but somehow they mesh well together and make it work. They each have quite a few hangups that they need to get over in order to make their relationship work and have a chance at a future, I've really enjoyed this series and would love to get more stories and revisit all of the characters. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

This was a great, grab-you-by-the-feels, sexy, grab-you-by-the-feels, and delightfully different twist on the standard Dom/sub storyline. I really enjoyed reading this, and hope there will be more books in this awesome series.

I really liked Curtis's character but Andrew's behaviour seemed a little off-kilter, like Richard's in the first book, just for completely different reasons. But again, the story was quite entertaining.

I enjoyed the other books in the series, but this was definitely the best one.

The dynamic between Andrew and Curtis was great and I loved that it wasn't flowless or without its bumps in the road.

The BDSM parts were hot and well written.

Overall a great book

Queer romance with kink. Stilted dialogue. Curtis is surprisingly whiny and casual for someone who is supposed to have impeccable manners. Still appreciated a story featuring middle aged characters.

This book was soo good. It had the right amount of heat and the right amount of angst (for this type of book, that’s like very little) and the right amount of love. I haven’t had the pleasure of reading the first few books in this series (which I plan on fixing soon) but I found it easy to keep up despite that fact.

Curtis was a strong sub who knew what he wanted and wouldn’t settle, I loved that he wouldn’t just bow to someone who wasn’t right for him. I loved his support system of friends, it was refreshing to have characters who weren't petty but actually cared.

Andrew was a bit more relatable with the money issues but I did think he put too much into that and almost messed things up on a matter of pride.

This was my first Xenia Melzer book and I cannot wait to pick up more!

Meh. The story is OK but I didn’t care for the writing. It’s very descriptive in terms of what the characters look like and do, but seemed superficial in terms of emotion and character development.

This is the 2nd BDSM romance in one week that I found boring so it may be that I’ve just gotten tired of this sub-genre.

MMy Thoughts and Review:
Sweet Curtis finally finds the man of his dreams. It has been eight years since his dom left him for a "younger model." Curtis spends his days being happy for his friends who are each finding, connecting, and most marrying their perfect for them mates. Curtis in no way begrudges his friends, but he is just about ready to give up hope when a very handsome baker asks him on a date.

This book held to the same formula as the other three, but I kept feeling disconnected from the MCs, Curtis and Andrew. I just felt their problems weren't really hashed out or something... can't quite put my finger on it.

There were also unanswered questions such as, whatever happened with Emelio and Garrett? And what about Tim? The other books tied up loose ends, but this one didn't. Perhaps these will be addressed in the next novel? 😁

I still enjoyed the story and that was mainly because of the supporting cast. I 💗 The Sub Club! 😄

I read a complimentary copy of this book from LesCourt and am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review. 💋

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:

5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-
Away-book like
‘Jesse's Smile' or ‚Joey’ from Angelique Jurd,
‘Save the at he kids' series from EM Leya,
‘Love’s Tethered Heart’ from C.L. Etta or
'Liberty' from Seth King),
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often reread and is a
WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises
(like most of Andrew Grey’s books)
it's like an A

3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few
times a year (most romances where you can
enjoy for relaxing and during waiting times in
hospitals). I can recommend them definitively!
It's like an B+

3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader,
maybe 2-3 times a year. It’s like a B

2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-
reader (i wouldn't recommend it heartily, but
it was ok). It's like a C-, D

1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too
many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an
absolut NO-GO). It's like failure in the whole
line, dismissed, repeat the class
