***The book that inspired the PATB Serial and The Paranormal Academy For Troubled Boys series. Thanks to all the Demon Arms fans and your continuing support! Love, Sadie Sins For updates, little side stories, and the newest episodes, check out www.sadiesinsbooks.com
Demon Arms is the first book in The Paranormal Academy For Troubled Boys series, which, within the span of 300 pages, has swiftly become a prominent, eagerly anticipated, need-to-have-now, paranormal M/M series for me. Although, seeing as Demon Arms is currently the only book available in said series, I’m clearly in a lot of trouble because patience is definitely not one of my virtues.
The academy mentioned within the title is a fantastical setting, filled with a bunch of feisty, troubled male teens, all bisexual (which is a natural state of being for this particular world’s supernatural contingent), who are each learning to control their gifts and harness their abilities with the guidance of a few awesomely badass mentors. If Hogwarts and Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters had a love-child, this place would be it - just take away all of the females, and then factor in way more cussing and a hell of a lot more sex.
For those readers who are worried that a story set in what is essentially a school environment will be way too YA for them, I’m fairly confident this will be a non-issue for the majority of those considering this one. All of the characters, including the students, are over 18, and I can promise you the author hasn’t been stingy with the on-page sexy times either – like, at all!
Fans of shifter romances and all the prerequisite mating, claiming, and the (expected) overwhelming insistence of mine, mine, mine (!!!) will surely enjoy the romance aspect of this book, too. The love story between the MCs - Dorian, the all-powerful sorcerer, and Wylie, the orphaned dragon shifter - is fun and abundantly sexy, with just enough drama and angst to keep their growing relationship interesting.
The world-building here is also quite fascinating, but my personal favourite element of this particular story is the full cast of fun and intriguing characters, including, but not limited to, shifters of all sorts, a handful of powerful sorcerers, an elf-halfling, an incubus, and many more combinations of the impressively paranormal. Once within the walls of the academy, I don’t think I came across a single character, student or teacher, who didn’t intrigue me and make me hanker for more of their backstories (and their future romances). This is why I need some sequels, stat; I can’t have all these awesome possibilities hanging over my head like this!
Where writing quality is concerned, the story could use a quick edit, with a few noticeably misused words and a few odd cases of randomly structured sentences. Identifiers like “the boy” or “the blond/brunette” were also way overused, but if these are my biggest complaints, I think I can rest easy knowing I’ve definitely struggled with worse technical issues in my time.
Overall, it’s fairly obvious I had a blast reading this one and I’m clearly desperate for more. I’ll be waiting with bated breath for the sequel, Sorcerer Slayer, which will no doubt showcase an epic enemies-to-lovers romance between fox shifter, Fox (original right?), and Vincent, the possible spawn-of-evil sorcerer. I can’t wait!
Okay. This could have been so, so good, and in terms of story outline, it is. It's a somewhat different twist on the paranormal trope, the characters are interesting, and I want to see how the other stories play out.
There's just one small catch; Sadie Sins is not a very good writer.
Someone should probably tell her the word is 'obstinate', not 'obstinant'. Not a typo, it popped up more than once.
At 7%, Wylie "...fought it with everything he had, hands clenching in fists until his talons were out and slicing his palm for focus."
At 32%, however: "'You ever hurt yourself with your own claws?' Dorian asked. 'Can't. They move whenever they come in contact with my own skin. Soften. Some sort of innate protection.'"
It's 'bout of drama', not 'bought of drama', 'wreaking havoc', not 'wrecking' it, and sentences like this make almost zero sense: "But his dragon liked it even while Wylie twitched at the means it had to have come to be created."
And how many fucking times do you have type the terms "the boy", "the brunette", and "the blond" before realizing you're grossly overdoing it? I swear to hair dye, every other fucking sentence had one or more of those terms. I even found a sentence that encompassed all three identifiers for Wylie: "Climbing up the boy's toned form, he straddled Wylie's stomach, hands resting on either side of the brunette's head."
And thanks to the nifty search feature in my new Fire HD 8 (shameless plug), I can tell you that there are 141 results for "the blond", 145 results for "the brunette", and over 500 results for "the boy".
Over 500. There are only 330 pages. Needless to say, the redundancies took me out of the story a bit.
If this had a competent editor, it could have received a solid four or even five star rating from me. As it stands, however, I can't bring myself to heap accolades onto a book that's a chore to read, no matter how interesting I find the premise of the story.
I was quite pleasantly surprised by this one. Don't let the cover fool you.
I don't read a lot of paranormal and this was definitely a different twist with the dragon shifter. But wow was this dragon shifter a hot dirty talking alpha male. *fans self*
Not a lot of action until around the halfway point but the handful of scenes we got were smoking! *no pun intended*
Likable characters all around, several of which I hope get their own book.
An interesting plot. I'm looking forward to seeing what goes on at the Academy!
When I read the blurb of this book, I was mildly intrigued. When I actually read the book I was stunned. It was so much better than I expected, although I should have known, because my friend Susan loved it. Susan...you were absolutely right ;)
This book was sweet, funny, sexy and really interesting.
Wylie has been dealing with his "demon" arms ever since he experienced a traumatic event when he was 8. He knows he is some sort of shifter but he has no clue what he really is.
Being shipped from foster home to foster home, he hasn't had any contact with other shifters and he sure as hell isn't gonna go look one up and ask questions.
When Wylie is caught up in the middle of burgelory and shit goes extremely wrong, he finally learns what kind of shifter he really is.... he is a dragon !!
After being caught by the police, he is sent to an academy for shifters, sorcerors and other creatures for 5 years. The academy excists to help it's students deal with their powers in the right way.
This is where Wylie meets Dorian, the most powerful and dangerous sorcerer of the academy.
One look at Dorian and his dragon decides that Dorian is his.
There is one small issue though....Dorian isn't always in control of his very powerful magic. Being touched, often leads to him sending off sparks and in the past even incinerating someone.
These two try to stay away from each other, because of the danger involved, but it's really no use because the attraction between them is too strong.
I didn't expect this book to be as steamy as it was. Wylie was quite the dirty talker and he even had some exibitionism in him...it was yummy ;)
"You're so fucking hot like this, beautiful. So sexy. So desperate for more. Anyone seeing you right now would know you were meant to be fucked."
Very pleasantly suprised by this one. This book ends with a HFN and the author states at the end of the book that there will be more soon about Wylie, Dorian and all the other awesome characters that live at the academy. I am definitely reading the second book !!
Re-read February 2020 I still really like this book. Demon Arms that is, not the rewritten version Episode #1.
---------------------------------
Wow, what a great book!
I never expected to like it as much as I did. This entire story was action-packed without forgetting about the romance. The romance was incredibly sweet and these guys had that whole star-crossed lovers thing going on. It was awesome!
Most important facts without any spoilers:
- Wylie and Dorian are both 18, but since they both been through a lot in life, they read older, perhaps in their early twenties. - The romance is one of the very intense kind. Because of their powers they cannot be together, but they really want to... (And since Wylie is a shifter there is a lot of MINE MINE MINE going on, although Wylie is sweet and patient, not the cocky alpha type) - There is no real relationship angst. These guys really do want to be together (although Dorian tries his best to push Wylie away at first, but this never works). - We got crazy hot sexy times! After their first time, they immediately went for it a second time. It's been a while since I've read such a long(ish) sex scene, and I loved it. And these guys like to go at it in public places.
More detailed (no real spoilers):
Wylie has been going from foster home to foster home since he was 8 years old and his 'demon arms' suddenly made an appearance when he was defending his sister. After this incident, his (adopted) parents didn't want to deal with a shifter, so they gave him away.
It is only when Wylie is 18 years old and gets caught when a burglary goes wrong that he finds out he doesn't have demon arms, but is in fact a dragon shifter.
He is sentenced to 5 years at a paranormal academy and has to learn to control his beast.
When Wylie arrives at the academy, he is convinced this will feel like a prison, but he couldn't be more wrong. The instructors are all kind people willing to teach the troubled paranormals everything to control their powers. And despite the occasional bad guy, the rest of the shifters and sorcerers all treat Wylie like a friend.
But when Wylie meets the powerful 18 year old sorcerer Dorian, he knows he has no chance at controlling his inner beast since the dragon immediately roars to the surface to claim Dorian. The dragon has decided that Dorian is his mate and will do anything to have him.
Dorian is one of the most powerful sorcerers there is and has to work hard to contain his power so he won't accidentally kill everyone around him. He cannot allow himself to have deep feelings since those set off his power (he cannot even masturbate). But when Wylie comes near him, he immediately starts sparking. They both know they shouldn't touch, but they can't help it.
"I really want to touch you.” “Your dragon wants to,” Dorian specified breathlessly. God, he wanted Wylie to touch him. He was hard, dizzy, and he would give anything in that moment to be able to feel Wylie's lips on his flesh. Wylie hissed and glanced down. “You're smoking again.” “Ignore it.” Dorian released the necklace so he could mend his shirt. “You were saying? About scenting me?” “I really shouldn't.” Wylie took a step back but froze the moment Dorian's hand touched his face. “He wants to cover you.” “With scent?” Dorian couldn’t look away from the strange white-blue orbs that burned into him. Wylie hissed against his fingers. “With cum.”
(Oh, Wylie's dragon is so so dirty)
After this they both try to stay away from each other, but they are so drawn to each other that they cannot help themselves..
Most of this story is centered around Wylie and Dorian trying to control their power and them trying to fight their attraction or find ways to be able to be together. But we also got some really awesome action scenes in the second half in which Dorian really shows his power. He was just awesome!
I can just see the author writing more books about Wylie and Dorian, or perhaps writing about any of the other interesting guys at the academy. I would say this ends in a very strong HFN (it felt like a HEA to me, but since they're so young and because of their surroundings, it's more of a HFN).
If I have one complaint it would be that there was some head hopping going on that could be a bit confusing at times. We even got a couple of sentences from 3rd party POVs, which was just weird.
But I really really enjoyed it and I can't wait to see what will happen next. I really hope Dante will get his own book. But I would be just as happy if this entire series will be about Wylie and Dorian.
Recommended to fans of action-packed stories with a sweet, intense romance and dirty hot sexy times.
The writing was clunky and bad (example: obstinate', not 'obstinant') we had: 141 results for 'the blond', 145 results for 'the brunette', and over 500 results for 'the boy' (*Edit: numbers of repeats shamelessly stolen from this review here. But these expressions are a very common thing for this author.) The relationship was weird and the secondary characters took up too much page-space. There were also a few plotholes and not everything was explained thoroughly. Waaaaaaay too much tell, and not enough show.
In relation to this author's shitty attitude and total disregard for the victims of SH, I am not interested in supporting her or her work anymore.
*My first review was flagged so I have broadened my explanation for my rating in accordance with the guidelines for reviews here at GR.
This is the first time I have read anything by this author , and I don't normally gravitate to YA , but I LOVED it !
At the start of this book Wylie doesn't even realise he is a Dragon shifter ( having been brought up in the foster system ) , hence " Demon Arms " . The action starts right off the bat , and Wylie ends up at the Academy , populated with shifters , sorcerer's , and other assorted supernatural patients .
This is where he meets Dorian , a powerful sorcerer student , with problems of his own , that Wylie's dragon immediately recognises as his mate .
Then their problems really start ........... and I really enjoyed it ........ Please let there be another book !!
Rating removed and review spoilered because - http://www.sadiesinsbooks.com/current... that's one hell of an attitude, a complete missing of the point. And a staggering amount of disrespect towards readers - those people who shell out money to buy books.
“He wants to cover you.” “With scent?" Dorian couldn’t look away from the strange white-blue orbs that burned into him. Wylie hissed against his fingers. “With cum.” ...........
“You can wash it off right now if you want.” Wylie ran his teeth over Dorian’s jaw. “I can go with you. Cover you again. Tie you up so my scent has some time to sink in and get into you deep. You'd like that too, pretty sure.” “Fuck, Wylie,” Dorian gasped as his hips rocked up. “How can you even have anything left after all that?” Wylie grinned down at him. “For you, I apparently can do a lot of crazy stuff.” ........... Dorian was there for one reason—one he willingly admitted to himself—to keep Vincent away from Wylie. He was there to play cockblock and nothing else. No talking to Wylie, no looking at him, no trying to get into his pants. No matter how tight they were. .............
Fuck. This book makes my fantasy come true and alive. I am telling you I wish I could collect every star in the fucking universe for this. 5 glorious stars are not enough. Not in the slightest.
This story is made for me. I can feel it. It responds to my inner demand and need and just perfect. Fucking perfect.
Fuck and shit are fucking common shits in this fucking book. Haha. Fuck. Shit. this shit is motherfucking damn danm hot. I was immensely intrigued the moment I read the blurb. Fuck. Who the fuck could resist Dragon shifter and sorcerer? THEY MAGIC CAN BURN THE FUCKING PLACE DOWN.
Fuck. THEIR MATING WAS FUCKING HOT. IT WAS ANOTHER LEVEL OF HOTNESS. PLEASE READ THE FUCK OUT OF IT FUCKING WORTH IT. FUCK.
Great story! The romance and sex scenes were hot! Lots of humor. The story and characters were very well written. I'm going to have to read more books by Sadie Sins.
Revised 2nd edition. Enjoyable cast of characters. Fun magic. Good character and relationship development for Wylie and Dorian. And of course since it's Sadie Sins - hot sex. Look forward to the sequel Sorcerer Slayer.
This book was amazing! I loved the world that was built and I really liked the academy that Wylie ended up going to, which housed all types of shifters and sorcerers, and I just loved Wylie. He was a dragon who couldn't shift all the way except for his aggressive arms (very sharp and blade-like). Dorian is a cocky sorcerer who tries not to feel anything because he's cracking and sparkling with power that he has a very hard time controlling. Wylie realizes and senses that Dorian is his mate and the drama begins. Leo is a lion (I love his name because it helped me to remember him.) who also wants Dorian and keeps wanting to fight Wylie for him. It's the alpha lion in him too. I was really hoping that some of the other characters would have hooked up also. I just love the romance and the characters were tantalizing with their very distinctive personalities. It would be nice if even Theodore could find a mate, but that's just me though. :) I believe that he's the sorcerer/dragon with the long red hair, so yummy. :D I had so much respect for Wylie because he had a lot of patience. To be honest, I was beginning not to like Dorian at all. He would make out with Wylie then stay away from him for a week, then get with him again and then stay away for a week. Poor Wylie was left feeling like he was unworthy of him. The story was very well written and I was totally enthralled and pulled into the story. The pace was okay but for me it was a bit slow at times, however this was still a very incredible read. Truly exciting, turbulent, and absolutely feral. :)
God it feels like forever since I’ve had a 5* read and it was waiting for me to read it. i *think* this is actually my first ever Sadie Sins read but holy cow she’s good.
It was fun, gripping, paranormal, sexy with a good bit of angst in there too! Basically I loved this book and I need book two NOW.
Dorian - I loved you so much I just wanted you to be happy!
“Fuck, just stop.” Dorian threw his arms up in exasperation. “Stop being so fucking perfect. Get angry. Hate me. I'm treating you like shit and I need you to hate me and leave already.”
Wylie you gave me some pretty fucking sexy dialogue....
“That's it,” Wylie groaned when Dorian clenched around him and his hips pushed back desperately. “You're doing so good… So tight.”
But together. Good god you guys worked well! Wylie ran his fangs over Dorian’s neck and followed with his tongue. “Need to smell you. Taste you… claim you.” “But… it's a hallway.” Dorian tried to get him to see reason.
******I DONT KNOW IF THIS IS SPOILERY******
The book ended on a good HFN but god I hope it wasn’t a clear HEA for a reason - book two????
3 for the plot but less than 2 for the writing - downgraded for some loose or ridiculous scenes.
In the first 3rd I considered to stop reading too often and only held on because I was determined to get to at least 25% and then ad some hope that the story that somehow felt like a mix of X-Men play Hogwarts for troubled teens but unfortunately also the characters couldn't really hold the promise the original world building made.
well well well ... I loved it! i couldn't put it down.
Wylie warmed my heart from the very beginning. He is an abandoned child growing up in the system and since he had 8 years he had "demon" arms. An unfortunate (or not so unfortunate) event lands him in the Academy of paranormal. He learns more about himself there and about his mate... Dorian is a sorcerer. A very dangerous one and he struggles to fight his emotions. Because of his power he is not allowed to feel anything no anger no lust no love. But when Wylie is came along things get hot really fast, literally.
Can't wait for book two! Hurry hurry Sadie!
****I would like to thank the author for the privilege and opportunity of reading this ARC. My review is an honest opinion of the book****
This is the first book I've read from this author but it won't be the last. This story was original and wonderfully told with future books in the making, which I would love to have a carry on with Dorian and wylie and the details from wylies youth, parentage and the potential fall out from dorians sorcery family bringing home a shifter. Loved the setting of the story in a school for paranormal and would love a few books with other character especially between Fox and Vincent( a romance is a brewing if ever there was one), a must read for those that love fantasy paranormal books
I really loved the premise, and the plot held together pretty well. Sex was hot. Characters had great chemistry. Worldbuilding is pretty nifty too.
Reason this doesn't have a higher star rating is because: 1) the head-hopping from paragraph to paragraph made it difficult for me to keep up with POV 2) there. was. no. lube. in ANY sex scene -- I refuse to believe spit and cum is enough lubricant for the girth of the dick and tightness of the hole involved
After reading this a second time. I’m re-rating this and dropping it from an initial 5 star to a solid 3 stars. Don’t get me wrong, I very much enjoyed this book but i found lots of things that Annoyed me that I did not catch or understand the first time. My experience on reading this book was not as i remembered the first time, and it may be due to my standards of what I now think is a 5 star read imo. My preference have changed for sure. Looking forward to book 2!
DNF 40% I couldn’t get into it. Too many beautiful guys, MCs who are super special + the most powerful thing ever *insert eye-roll* , constant and random POV changes, not the writing style that I like...
This was definitely readable. Some of the world building almost made it to interesting, but mainly it's an X-Men-type school for paranormal teenagers (all either "sorcerers" or "shifters," and for some reason, there's no girls, at all). For those who like that sort of thing, there's soul bonding and sex with a dragon-shifter (in dragon form). I would definitely read more in this series; my biggest dislike was that it's about (older) teenagers, who, well, have all the judgment of teenagers (and therefore the whole soul bond thing seemed just kind of... sad, being stuck with the person who seemed like your "perfect mate" at 17, forever?). I would REALLY have rather read about the teachers -- they were interesting.
Generally YA books, even m/m aren't erotic but this one certainly is. Enjoyed the character development and short action. Would love to see a follow up book on a certain Italian character and Red dragon 😉.
Nice new series that I look forwarding to reading more of. I like the take on dragon shifters that don't just turn into shifters. It is also a fun world with a lot of different supernatural elements from half elves, incubus, shifters, sorcerers and some with demon blood in the mix. With the school hosting a wide range of supernaturals there will be a lot to explore in future series. For this first book there was good base set for the school and I loved Wylie and Dorian together. I was fun watching them try to avoid each other while wanting to do nothing more than tear each others clothes off. I have to admit I would like to see another book with them as they explore Dorian's families reaction to Wylie and the introduction of Dante into their lives.
Rating: 4.5 stars This book wasn’t even on my radar until a friend lent me her copy and I’m really glad she did. I really enjoyed this story of Wylie a dragon shifter who really got the wrong deal in life and Darian who is a sorcerer who though he came from money didn’t have it much easier. I really liked the chemistry between both Wylie and Darian. I loved the dynamics of all the shifters in the paranormal academy. I thought the story itself was really good.
If I had one complaint it would be that the book needed a good editor. There were a few missing words and typos that I found a bit annoying. Other than that, I really loved this book and cannot wait for the sequel.
Wylie grew up not knowing what or who he was, with no family, no one to guide him. Now finally he's beginning to discover the answers. My heart broke for him. I want to know more about the world and what made things the way they are. The chemistry between Wylie and Theo especially in the beginning, is electric in a dangerously sexy way. I loved it! I'm eagerly anticipating getting my hands on the next episode. I was given an ARC to read and am voluntarily leaving a review for the new version of the first part of this awesome story.
