On a balmy Saturday night at the Sedberry Island Resort & Spa, as guests sleep or relax after a day at the beach, the soothing calm is suddenly shattered by three gunshots, a spine-chilling cry for help and the shocking claim that a man has been murdered. At that moment, Kate Reed and Zack Hutton are enjoying the first night of their honeymoon beside the Atlantic Ocean. As a former private investigator, Kate’s immediate instinct is to join the search for the killer. But the local police detective makes it clear that she should focus on leisure activities and spa treatments, not a homicide inquiry. Nevertheless, Kate feels compelled to lend a hand, especially when multiple sources begin offering conflicting stories. As she follows the clues and learns more about the incident, Kate encounters a curious mix of elements, including black patent leather high heels, deceptive security guards, a cat named SpongeBarb SquidPants, a sterling silver skull, an unauthorized crime scene cleaning crew and a family business riddled with conflict and deceit. The Bride Cried Murder, Book 29 in the Sky High Pies Cozy Mystery series, includes a tasty trio of Nana Reed’s Sky High recipes!
I tend to really get into a book and although this one took me longer than normal to read, I was really consumed by the happenings. I guess we completely skip the wedding and only get a few details of what happened with it while reading this book, so this started out with Katie and Zack on their honeymoon. The previous book took place about 2 months before the wedding and this was the day of the wedding.
From the beginning, confusion sets in. Katie and Zack were relaxing and eating dessert in their room when 3 gunshots ring through the night. Katie had Zack call the police as she runs out on the balcony to see if she can find out what is going on. There is a woman in a wedding dress that is covered in blood and she screams out about a man being killed while everyone watched. Katie sees the fear in her eyes and quickly runs down to help the woman. The woman is brisked away by someone before Katie can talk to her.
Katie talks to the local detective and the Detective treats Katie like she’s dense and doesn’t know what she saw. The Detective believes Katie knows what she saw, but it’s obvious the Detective doesn’t believe her.
So Katie begins tromping around asking people questions trying to get to the truth, but the truth is proving to be difficult and it’s obvious there’s a coverup happening. No one she speaks with admits a murder took place. Everyone keeps telling her that it was all part of an act for a late night murder mystery.
It all kind of had me in a daze and in a lot of confusion. What’s really going on?!
Definitely held my attention every moment I was reading. I have a hard time staying awake (and I’ve been off work this past week and my active son is out of town, so no responsibilities forced my tired moments into moments of sleep). Since many times I feel like I’m part of the characters lives, maybe it was all of Katie’s active investigating that tired me out.
And Zack is a complete dream. He put up with Katie’s sleuthing during their honeymoon and he didn’t get mad once. Could you imagine being on your honeymoon planning to rest and do what honeymooners do and your spouse stumbles onto a murder that she can’t stay away from?! Stress I tell ya! Zack is a saint! And Katie’s parents show up, too! Ugh I’d strangle my mother because it’d definitely be her idea. There’d be another murder! Lol.
Happy to see Katie married. Interesting honeymoon. I hate to see children involved in murder to take down a parent. We are responsible for our actions. I lost my father when I turned 11 and I wouldn't think of hurting anyone. I know it's only la story but theses crimes take place.
A newlywed who would rather sleuth than enjoy her honeymoon? The mystery had an intriguing premise, but felt rushed - more details about the wedding would have been nice, as well as more details about the characters at the resort, including the killers, would have fleshed this story out and made it more enjoyable.
Fun read but awful editing. Parts of the story were very disjointed. The first half of the series was great but the editing gets worse each book after about #23
