Jonathan Moore was born in 1964 and attended University where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree, with majors in History and English. In a career involving twenty years as a history teacher as well as running several successful businesses, Jonathan has been a voracious reader of all periods of History. In pursuit of his studies Jonathan has travelled extensively and enjoys war gaming and military re-enacting. He also enjoys True Crime and has written several books on the subject.

I will never cease to be amazed by how cunning and creative the human mind tends to when concerned with the question of how to punish, humiliate and, of course, kill a convicted criminal; functioning almost like a reservoir of possibilities from the setting of ancient Rome to the well-known endeavors of the Middle-Ages, and from there onward to our modern times. One thing is for certain, the executioner sure knew how to execute his job! Get it? Execute his jo-- Okay, you probably get it. Nervous laughter.

Jonathan J. Moore highlights most of the known ways in which a punishment could have been carried out on a person convicted of wrongdoing, which sort of crimes elicited hanging, beheading, being boiled alive etc. The list is long, and mercy was seldom showed, which definitely made people reconsider their crimes. Or not. While most of the information in this book is already commonplace knowledge by now, the most interesting part of this book involved the unlucky people whose executions were so severe, so memorable, so horrific that they are remembered in the pages of history for THAT very reason. Talk about bad luck!

But the greatest fault of this book is undeniably the author's overindulgent analysis of the method's of execution that eventually became so specific (especially on the topic of hanging) that it became a chore to skim through it. Instead, it would have been more interesting to read what society thought about these sort of ritualized killings, were people in favor of it or were there people who sought to change it, how biased were the courts against the accused and what influenced their opinions etc. This would have helped the reader better understand why these forms of punishment were a possibility to begin with and why they changed over time.

To finish this review, one very interesting thing that I noticed while reading this book: hanging, drawing and quartering, burning at the stake etc. felt like they truly were the relics of the past, the electric chair and lethal injection, however, felt very much like the product of their time. It was downright disturbing to read about them. Is it because they are still very much in use to today?

Very possible. So very possible, indeed.

Als ze mij ooit gaan executeren, dan mogen ze me voor het vuurpeloton zetten alsjeblieft. Ik heb de indruk dat dat nog het vlotst van al gaat en de kans daar het kleinst is dat ze er een fiasco van maken.

Een week nadat ik Moore's boek over de geschiedenis van de geneeskunde heb gelezen, gooien we het roer radicaal om en gaan we eens kijken hoe het zit met de geschiedenis van executies. Ook dit boek heb ik in de Nederlandse heruitgave van 2025 gelezen. De vertaling is van Erika Venis, die ik kortgeleden ook al heb gelezen en waar ik toen, net zoals nu, positief over ben. Geslaagde zinnen, goede vocabulaire, correcte namen en terminologie. Niets op aan te merken, een sterke Nederlandse uitgave.

Om dit boek te lezen, mag je geen teer zieltje zijn en moet je een sterke maag hebben. De beschrijvingen die je in deze 250 bladzijdes leest, zijn bijna genoeg om er zelf een eind aan te maken. Je kunt het zo gek, vreselijk en wreed niet verzinnen of de mensheid heeft het wel ooit wel als executie gedaan. De brandstapel steekt er soms maar bleekjes bij af.

Moore vertelt in geuren en kleuren over allerhande manieren om de mensen het leven extreem zuur te maken, van in de oudheid tot nu toe. Zelf had ik altijd het idee dat de recentere uitvindingen - met name de elektrische stoel en de injecties - wel enigszins genadig waren, maar lieve god, dat was duidelijk verkeerd gedacht. Er loopt zoveel mee mis, evenveel als bij ophangingen en vierendelingen. Ja, die komen allemaal aan bod, samen met nog een hoop andere executiewijzes.

Het nadeel is dat het boek vanuit een tamelijk westers perspectief is geschreven. Op een handvol keren na, worden de oorspronkelijke Amerikanen, Azië, Afrika en Oceanië genegeerd. Het gaat bijna exclusief over Europa en de VS. Misschien komt dat omdat er niet genoeg materiaal voorhanden is van de andere locaties, maar dat had de auteur wel even mogen aangeven.

De uitgave bevat ook tientallen tekeningen, gravures, schilderijen en foto's - geen nood, het wordt niet te gedetailleerd of te bloederig, maar het geeft wel een beeld van hoe het eraan toe ging.

Kort gezegd: als je dit boek hebt gelezen, kijk je waarschijnlijk nooit meer met dezelfde morbide blik naar binnen als je eens een foltermuseum passeert.

Die Themen werden sehr sachlich angegangen, ohne unnötig blutige Details. Es werden auch verschiedene Beispiele kurz geschildet von Opfern dieser Methoden.

Ich fand es schon immer interessant, auf welche Ideen Menschen kommen um anderen Leid und Tod zuzufügen. Dadurch hatte ich aber schon von vielen der genannten Dinge eine Idee oder kannte diese schon, so das für mich wenig neues dabei war.

Normalerweise bin ich ein Fan der Bücher von Libero, viele sind als eine Art Lexikon aufgebaut, so das zu jedem Buchstaben etwas genannt wird. Dieses hier ist vom Aufbau anders. Daher war es sehr zwar etwas mehr in die tiefe gehend als die anderen Bücher, aber einfach nicht das was ich erwartet habe. Das Buch war nicht schlecht, aber einfach nicht das was ich erwartet hatte.

Dieses Buch ist wirklich nichts für schwache Nerven... Ich musste es zwischendurch immer Mal weglegen um eine Pause von den doch sehr detaillierten Beschreibungen zu machen. Alles in allem ein sehr gutes Buch mit anschaulichen Illustrationen. Einige Details sind hier und da wohl nicht ganz realitätsnah und etwas reißerisch dargestellt, aber ansonsten sehr informativ.

Is this book informative about methods of torture / execution through the ages? Yes.

Is it properly cited, spell-checked, and edited? No.

I'm not sure if I just got a bum copy, or perhaps a first edition run, but the typos and sloppy editing were a nightmare to deal with. A citation would direct you to a page for further reference - and, surprise! You'd go to that page and have no further information. The most heinous issue I had with the book was the lack of citations for the illustrations used. Some were from manuscripts and Broadside papers, which may not have a "proper" artist, but there were several works of art (including one Caravaggio) that the name of the painting and the artist weren't named.

So, honestly, reader beware. If you don't care about proper citation, have at it. But if you're a nitpicker like me, this will probably drive you up the wall.

La première phrase de l’introduction donne le ton :

« Si les exécutions étaient publiques y assisteriez-vous ? »

Une plongée dans l’horreur nous attend. L’histoire de la peine de mort à travers les âges vaut son pesant d’or, pour moi qui suis amatrice de thrillers sanglants. Inutile de vous dire que je me suis régalée ! Et pourtant, les méthodes employées sont atroces.

Ce livre est vraiment très complet, accompagné d’illustrations à chaque page, rendant le tout très ludique et agréable.

L’introduction reprend l’histoire des exécutions jusqu’à nos jours, nous découvrons la liste des pays où la peine de mort est encore légale. Il faut savoir qu’en 2014, 2500 personnes ont été exécutées dans 54 pays. Glaçant…

Puis, ce ne sont pas moins de 12 techniques qui nous sont amplement détaillées, allant de la gravité fatale à l’injection létale, en passant par l’écorchement. Bon, je vous préviens de suite, il vaut mieux avoir le cœur bien accroché, c’est assez glauque ! La mort par ébullition m’a beaucoup retournée, c’était une spécialité de la génération des Tudors entre le 15è et le 17è siècle. Je ne suis d’ailleurs pas prête de refaire des frites…

Chaque méthode nous est parfaitement expliquée, nous avons également droit aux loupés, car ne nous voilons pas la face, il n’existe pas de moyen propre, rapide et indolore de donner la mort.

A la lecture de tous ces châtiments, franchement, ça ne donne pas envie de faire des choses répréhensibles ! On marche dans les clous, si je puis dire, et on ne s’en écarte même pas pour voler une pomme !

« Avant d’exposer la tête, on la faisait bouillir dans un mélange de cumin et diverses autres épices pour la conserver et la rendre peu appétissante pour les oiseaux. »

Le volet consacré à l‘art de la torture est également passionnant. Il comprend même le témoignage d’une victime, extrait de l’ouvrage de J-F-M Trévern, « Défense de la discussion amicale en réponse aux difficultés de romanisme de M. Stanley-Faber » (à vos souhaits !).

Et on ne peut pas dire que les bourreaux manquaient d’imagination, loin de là ! Grâce au journal de Meister Franz Schmidt, on découvre un peu mieux le rôle d’un bourreau. L’auteur nous propose également une liste des bourreaux célèbres. Tiens, cela me fait penser au dernier roman d’Estelle Tharreau « La peine du bourreau ». Je reste dans le thème😉. Autre passage me faisant penser à une lecture, celui concernant la pendaison en Grande-Bretagne, et la condamnation d’Amélia Sach et Annie Walter, qui tenaient une ferme à bébés. Ce sujet est détaillé dans « La grande puanteur » de Cétro.

Nous terminons par l’utilisation des restes des condamnés, un petit morceau de graisse distillée pour soulager vos problèmes de peau ? Un petit verre de sang chaud, Mesdames, pour vous guérir de vos menstruations douloureuses ? Un ravissant collier avec un morceau de peau tannée en guise d’amulette ? Je vous fait grâce du pire…😀

Un ouvrage que je conseille vraiment, si toutefois une plongée dans l’horreur ne vous rebute pas. Très complet, passionnant, une bible à avoir dans sa bibliothèque. Et je pense que ce livre peut très bien intéresser les auteurs dans leurs travaux de recherches précédent la phase d’écriture.

Mroczna strona mojej czytelniczej duszy czuje się tą lekturą makabrycznie usatysfakcjonowana. Strach pomyśleć, w jakim punkcie znajdowałaby się ludzkość, gdyby energię poświęconą opracowywaniu coraz bardziej wymyślnym sposobom uśmiercania w imieniu prawa/rządu/chęci zagarnięcia majątku skazańca (niepotrzebne skreślić) skierować na poprawę jakości życia.

Mówiono wam na lekcjach historii o leczniczych właściwościach krwi, tryskającej ze świeżo zdekapitowanego ciała? O kolejkach, ustawiających się pod szafotem z kubkami i dzbanami w dłoniach? Wiedzieliście, ile w nazistowskich Niemczech rodziny skazańców płaciły za więzienie i egzekucję swych bliskich? 1,5 reichsmarki za każdy dzień spędzony przez skazańca w więzieniu, 300 reichsmarek za egzekucję i 12 fenigów za poniesione koszty pocztowe. Ot, niemiecka wydajność i precyzja. A ile czasu żyje odcięta głowa? Zdarzyła się egzekucja, podczas której głowa odskoczyła z takim impetem, że wylądowała wśród widzów, potoczyła się pod spódnicę młodej damy i według części świadków powiedziała "Ohoho". Zaraz potem asystent kata złapał ją i wrzucił do worka.

Kara śmierci to też dochodowy biznes. Czytając o firmie Freda Leuchtera, wprowadzonych przez niego usprawnieniach sprzętu, oferowanych szkoleniach, zakończonych certyfikatem "technik egzekucji" (punkt do CV), czy upraszczaniu kwestii formalnych, miałam wrażenie, że mam przed sobą szeroko rozbudowaną ofertę marketingową. Leuchter był prawdziwym pasjonatem egzekucji - nie mając wykształcenia medycznego ani inżynierskiego, udoskonalał krzesło elektryczne i moduły do podawania zastrzyków z trucizną, a wszystko to w przydomowym garażu. Kursy, prowadzone przez jego firmę, obejmowały obsługę komory gazowej, wieszanie na szubienicy, obsługę krzesła elektrycznego i podawanie trujących zastrzyków. Pełen serwis, można powiedzieć. Szkolenia przestały dziwić, gdy przyszło do rozdziału o spartaczonych egzekucjach na krześle elektrycznym, będącym dowodem na to, że opisu egzekucji Eduarda Delacroix King nie wyssał z palca. Męczarnie skazańców w komorze gazowej też nie odstawały od Starej Iskrówy. Okazuje się, że zamiast tych wszystkich wymyślnych metod najszybsze jest rozstrzelanie przez pluton strzelców wyborowych, z których jeden miłosiernie dostaje ślepy nabój, żeby każdy mógł żywić nadzieję, że to nie jego strzał zabił skazańca.

I feel a little bit guilty giving this book three stars, because it had some great information that I did not know before and I only started to get bored toward the end just because of the fatigue of hearing the same thing over and over. To be fair, it WAS an interesting read and anyone interested in history would likely find some parts intriguing. But having said that, it really wasn't what the title claimed it would be, "The Story of Execution through the Ages." Instead of providing any sort of "story" each chapter was completely disjointed and each chapter covered a different type of death. The chapters could also be sometimes repetitive. Like how many ways can you describe a person's head being cut off? The answer is: a lot.
This brings me to my next problem with the book. The only people who will actually enjoy reading this book are die-hard students of history (pun intended), and closet sadists who have not yet reached the stage of inflicting pain on living beings themselves and are still content to read about it. And read about it you will, over and over, account after account. From classic beheadings, hangings, and witch burnings, to lesser known deaths such as being broken on the wheel, flayed alive, gibbetted, sliced into pieces, and every other possible contrived method of torturous death imaginable. As I read the book, I progressed along a trajectory of horror, disgust with humanity, then desensitization, and finally boredom. This is something that I think occurs with people who watch a lot of gory horror films. They start watching because what they see shocks and disgusts them, then they get desensitized, leading them to seek different ways to be horrified, but eventually they are just bored. My disgust with the ignorance and depravity of humanity remained throughout the book, but by the end, I was bored with reading story after story about death with no central narrative or thread tying the book together. The book might better be read as individual chapters to accompany something else.
The book is pretty euro-centric in its content, only occasionally throwing in non-Western forms of execution. But when it does so, there is no attempt to explain ideological differences in how or why people were executed in different parts of the world. The book does not attempt to answer any big questions, or any questions at all, really, besides the question: "How many ways can people torture and kill each other?" Spoiler Alert: it's a lot.

Na początek należy ściągnąć czapkę z głowy przed autorem, bo czekał go spory research w omawianym temacie i już sobie wyobrażam, z jak wielu rzeczy nie mógł tu skorzystać, bo zapewne objętość tej książki wyniosła by kilkakrotnie razy więcej. Co ważniejsze, lektura nie nudzi, nawet mimo sporej doży opisów, którym towarzyszy jednak sporo rysunków, rycin, zdjęć. A wszystko to w mocno makabrycznej oprawie.

Już sam tytuł wskazuję, z czym czytelnik będzie miał do czynienia. Kilkanaście rozdziałów książki poświęcono kwestii egzekucji, jakie na przestrzeni istnienia ludzkości ewoluowały, od tych najokrutniejszych, po ledwie akceptowane. Bo przecież kara śmierci to nie jest środek zaradczy, a zadośćuczynienie po fakcie, za czyn wybitnie okrytny, wymierzony przeciwko ludkziemy życiu. Ale jak się okaże podczas czytania, nie tylko.

Wieszanie, ścięcie czy to mieczem czy ostrzem gilotyny, przypiekanie, odzieranie żywce że skóry, usmażenie na krześle elektrycznym, śmiertelny zastrzyk czy zagazowanie morderczym specyfikiem, a czasami całość poprzedzona była wymyślnymi torturami. Nie ma przebacz. Ludzka wyobraźnia w materii krzywdzenia bliźniego jest makabrycznie rozwinięta. I dzięki tej książce, na swój sposób fascynująca. Bo często gęsto Moore nie szczędzi nam szczegółowych opisów. Nader obrazowych.

Ale autor oprócz rzetelnej analizy metod, z lubością skupia się na tych najbardziej felernych przypadkach. Egzekucjach, które wybitnie poszły nie tak. Czy to skazanego trzeba było ciąć wiele razy mieczem, aby zakończyć jego mękę, bo kat nie był wprawiony/pijany czy natężenie w krześle okazało się nie takie jak potrzeba i "pieczenie" trwało o 10 minut za długo... Spójrzmy wprawdzie w oczy. Kary, choć okrutne spotykały w większości osoby, które swoimi czynami popełniły podobne okropieństwa. Tylko ich skala w tak skondensowanej lekturze może delikatniejszych przytłoczyć...

To mój główny zarzut wobec tej pozycji. Fajnie się to czyta pewnymi dawkami, ale do ciągu nikt nie mógł mnie zmusić. Trzeba też przyjąć poprawkę na to, że książka ma iście kronikarski styl. Z powtórzeniami ważniejszych zdań, które zajmują tylko miejsce, z zastosowaniem rodem, jak z jakiejś gazety. Temat jest na tyle ciekawy, że ten element wydał mi się zbędny. I to lektura z gatunku tych jedynych w swoim rodzaju.

Kawał interesującej historii o aspektach naszego dziedzictwa, o którym nie chcemy zbytnio pamiętać czy roztrząsać fakt istnienia...

L’uomo è l’animale più crudele. Da sempre l’essere umano si è prodigato per inventare strumenti di morte crudeli ed efferati.
La storia dell’umanità è costellata di morti ingiuste, torture disumane, invenzioni mortali, riti brutali. Da nord a sud, da est a ovest. Europei, asiatici, americani, nativi del nord e Sud America: nessuna popolazione, sia quelle che si definiscono civilizzate sia quelle che non lo sono ritenute, si è astenuta dal dare la morte nel peggiore dei modi.
Che fossero innocenti o colpevoli dei crimini loro contestati poco importava: streghe, dissidenti politici o religiosi...
Atroci sofferenze che arrivano fino ai giorni nostri.
Un piccolo saggio che fa riflettere su quanto sia deviata un buona parte di umanità.

An interesting book in to the history of death and the ways that executions happened, from burning of witches to hanging and up to todays modern ways of lethal injection.

Hung, drawn, and quartered is a book that leads you down the historical route of deaths, some more gruesome than others, but all for punishment for a crime that the individual has committed. Despite the book being less than 300 pages, I found that each method mentioned was plenty in detail and that I got a full picture of how they would proceed with each death without being overwhelmed.

I found the writing easy to follow, the information easy to focus on and take in without loosing where I am or trying to understand.

This book is simply amazing!!! I am a person that truly enjoys history and this book is very thorough in going through the different methods of execution and torture. Even though, some of the methods are very dark and disturbing, this book was hard to put down. They talk about the executions of Marie Antionette, Albert Fish, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and other individuals. This book also discuss, how people took souvenirs from the body, from pieces of wood from the gallows to shoes made from the flesh of criminals. If you are enjoy history and true crime, then I strongly recommend this book.

Gruesome. This book covers executions in depth throughout the ages, ranging from ancient Rome to modern-day USA. Those who love grisly detail will enjoy the 11th chapter which discusses some less than successful lethal injections. The text is accompanied by historical drawings and photographs, whilst page-length descriptions of executioners (such as Vlad the Impaler) and case studies (such as the outcome for the Cato Street Conspirators) break up the 13 main chapters in the book. Overall, an engaging read, but only if you're not too squeamish.

As soon as I bought this book, I knew that this was going to be one heck of a read! The author explores the different types of executions that were used throughout the world. This was definitely a well written and informative book that (in a good way) made my skin crawl. It was intriguing reading about some of the people who had the suffer some of the most gruesome ways of execution! The book explores how some executions were done well, but it also explained in certain cases and situations that the executions were botched and were not done to the best standards! It just demonstrates to me how horrid people can, to be able to inflict this type of pain and suffering onto other human beings!
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves history and wants to learn more about executions! It is an eye-opener of a book!

Redakcja tej ksiazki w jezyku polskim jest koszmarkiem ponizej jakiejkolwiek krytyki. Bledy merytoryczne przeplataja sie z bledami stylistycznymi. Gdybym chciala podkreslic wszystkie, bolalaby mnie reka. Poza tym ksiazka jest zbiorem luznych anegdotek, i gdyby nie opisywala sposobow egzekucji, a na przyklad lepienie ludzikow z plasteliny, powiedzialabym, ze dla dzieci z pierwszej klasy szkoly podstawowej.

Beautifully prepared edition (many drawings and photos, tables with additional information etc.) but after reading it, I don't feel that I know that much more about the topic? The reason for that is probably the fact that I've already watched many TV shows, movies and read books about medieval times, witches hunts etc. And Moore wrote a book for beginners in the topic. So it's not a bad book, but if you want to know something more specialized on the topic - pick something else.

Very interesting book. Unfortunately, there were multiple issues with fact checking (the chemical nerd in me was stuck on the lethal injection concoction being described as "caustic basic acidic". Z téhle knihy jsem nadšená. Je skvěle vypracovaná. Sice jsou tam i oblasti, které šly mimo mě, ale patřily tam a měly tam být. Kniha je dobře zpracovaná i po grafické stránce. Doplněna o působivé fotografie. Kniha obsahuje spoustu přínosných informací, o nichž se ví skutečně jen málo. Je to velice zajímavá věc a já ji jen doporučuji.

Avrättningarnas blodiga historia är en fantastisk faktabok för alla som är intresserade av en lite mörkare del av vår historia. Boken är fylld av intressanta fakta som jag tidigare inte hade någon aning om. Moore är väldigt detaljerad i sina beskrivningar och vissa delar är riktigt obehagliga, jag skulle därför inte rekommendera boken till någon som är äckelmagad.

Great book. Deals with lots of little known methods of execution including boiling in oil and beheading with the sword. Well written and the pictures are sensational. Almost as good as his Nazi Book.

I read this book in Dutch and was really disappointed in the translation. So many sentences were a direct translation, without any consideration for the English/Dutch subtleties. This is not how it should be done. It made reading the book frustrating, while the subject is so fascinating.

Amazing story of the grim world of torture, didn't know that cock ups still took place in the 1990s (lethal injection). I've always had a fascination with topics like this, on how cruel the human mind can be in inflicting pain on people in the most agonizing way. For me it was a good bedtime read.
