There are two types of magicals - the Sun class, and the Moon class. After the vicious Shadow War a hundred years before, they signed a peace treaty. Sun magicals agreed to roam the daylight hours, and let the Moon magicals walk the streets at night.
I am an Elkie.
Technically Sun class, but with my pointed ears, and badass bow, I was born to run and hunt in the woods of upstate New York. I'm a country gal, at heart. I don't give two craps about Sun/Moon politics, or the Big Apple. But then, everything changed. My dad died, and my mom found a new guy to love, William Geiser - the Sun Mayor of New York City...
Now they're sending me to Zenith Academy, a supernatural school for Sun class magicals - Celestials, Mages, the elite of the elite. By night, the school becomes Eclipse, an Academy for vampires, and the creatures that own the night.
But everything isn't as it first seems. I've stumbled across a plot to reignite the Shadow Wars all over again, and I think my soon-to-be stepdad is right in the middle of it.
Proving it, though, will be another question entirely...
This started out very teenage angst and went full blow conspiracy soooo fast. I like the political intrigue and how it's basically a bunch of teens who are trying to save the day. My only real suggestion, mild spoiler, if Grandpa is a lawyer - why didn't anyone think to call him for help?
A thrilling book that separates magic users between sun class and moon class, not unlike light and dark fae separation. The entire city splits between its dual natures, separate schools and mayors included, even paranormal class also gets split between the sun and moon. Moon class mayor is more open to desegregation while the sun class mayor screams for complete segregation. Theia is stuck in between. Technically Born of sun class her father passed away and her mother decides to hook up with the sun class mayor. Guess who has it out for theia?! She makes few friends at school because she’s considered such an outcast but the friends she does make are outcasts too. Can Theia and her friends stand up to the mayor and fight the desegregation? You’ll have to read to find out!
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and its take on the different supernatural species. In this world, everything and everyone is divided into two classes - sun class and moon class, with the sun class taking control of the day and the moon class taking over the night, a ruling determined after the previous Shadow War. I loved the way the world changed when it was time to cross from one class ruling to the other.
Theia is a young teenage Elkie, whose mother decides to uproot their small family and change everything that Theia has ever known. Unfortunately for Theia, her life doesn't change for the better when her mother announces her pending marriage to a sun mage, one who is running for the mayor of New York.
It wouldn't be so bad if he was a nice, gentle man, but the complete opposite is true and he will stop at nothing to get what he wants and if Theia stands in his way, then she better look out pretty sharpish! Theia, though, is no pushover and with the help of her friends and new allies, she is determined to stop him at any cost!
This book was fast paced and the main characters were really likeable, even Nik with his lying and hidden secrets had a likeable side. Theia was a great main character - feisty, determined, caring and completely devoted to doing what is right! Just wish her mother could see what a great young girl she is, but she seems to be wearing a pair of blinkers to everything going on around her!
I can't wait to find out what happens to Theia and the gang in the next book and hope the others are able to do something to help her out of that final tricky situation Theia found herself in!
Thank you to Gabby and Charlie for sending me this book to read - was a great read to what I hope will be an intriguing and exciting series!
This author was an unknown to me going into this story, so I had no expectations. I have to say I am thrilled that I took a chance. This story is so unique. I’ve never read anything like it. The characters are so rich and vibrant, you can imagine them standing in front of you. I’m really looking forward to the next one.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
So so good!!! This book is so awesome as it takes you to a new world that you can tell is really thought out and well developed! While I must say the ending left me anxious for the next installment, I absolutely loved this book! Highly recommend for anyone who loves the fantasy genre as this definitely delivers!!!
Highly recommended! The strong female lead and immersive world hooked me from the start. I can’t wait to read the other books in the series. I really liked the concept of a moon and sun world. Also liked the political subtext.
Kinda like Buffy meets Grimms Tales And mythology. Really great read. Not too deep on details perfect for the YA group and those of us that like a great fast paced story with characters that we can really like!
WOW! That was one fantastic roller coaster ride of a story. There was so much action, suspense and intrigue all packed into the start of what is sure to be a fantastic series. This was one book I couldn’t put down. Although there were so many times in this story that I wanted to throw my book at the wall! And that ending WHAT!
Theia is one badass heroine who doesn’t take any crap! All of the other main and supporting characters are just as fantastic but we don’t know as much about them yet. Love the characters, love the suspense, and loved the awesome adventure.
Fantastic writing from both of these authors. I can’t wait to read the next book.
I really enjoyed this new iteration of the typical supernatural races in this story. Theia is half Elkie (half Mage as well but she's not so into that) and the Elkie is the really interesting part anyway! The race puts me in mind of the typical fantasy race of wood elves, which is awesome. Elkies have a strong connection with their bows and their ancestors through their bows. It's really a fascinating race and, in general, all the supernatural races in this world are just a bit different and just a bit new from what we've gotten so used to reading and that makes this story feel very fresh! It's hard to talk specifics because so much of this story is plot twists and surprises and I don't want to spoil any part of it! I will say, this ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so if you're not into that, you probably want to wait for the series to complete before reading! Overall, LOVED it!
This book is so different of what I have read before, loved it!!! ❤️... Theia is an amazing Elkie girl, fierce, strong, always figthing for the right thing, helping others... Her world is turn upside down when her Mom decided to marry the candidate for Sun-Mayor and they move to NYC and all turns out to be a death plan for her and the downfall of the Moon-Class... Ha!, they didn't count on her figthing spirit and her resilence 💪👊... Along with old and new friends/allies, she will stop at nothing to stop this man from fulfilling his evil plans... But at what cost??? 😳🤯🙈
Fun premise! Love the world this story takes place in! A whole bunch of different supernatural beings! Lots of awesome magic and powers. Love Theia’s confidence and her sass! Right from the beginning I was drawn in! Theia has some skills with her bow and arrows! Engrossing story dealing with discrimination between the different “factions”. The Sun class and the Moon class. There’s some nefarious characters creating strife among the classes. Theia knows something is up and with a little help, the secrets begin to show themselves. Entertaining read and I’m excited to see where the story goes!
This book was absolutely amazing. I was so sucked in I finished it in 1 day. I simply couldn’t put it down until I was finished. Theia Foxglove is a Elkie/Mage who was torn away from her home when her mother announced she was engaged to William Geiser, a Mage of the sun clan running for mayor of New York. Intrigue, betrayal, romance and murder awaits Theia as she is thrust into the unknown. Authors Gabby Fawkes and Charlie Soul have written a great story with strong characters and I am so excited about this series. I can’t wait for the next book.
Absolutely great start to a new series! From the very beginning I was sucked into this book. Theia is a wicked badass, plus add in the additional characters...BAM! You have a story so incredible, so unique, you can't help but read it through the night! The world building was so different and so addicting! Gabby and Charlie bring a special perspective to a brand new storyline, that it has you locked on so tight, you don't want to miss a single word!
Theia is a fantastic female lead character, she is stubborn and fierce. She get thrust into the political world when her mom gets engaged. With the be an Elkie it not exactly what her new family would like and they have their own very dark agendas. She is left to fight for not only what is right but to stay alive as well. She may not have grown up with a lot of friends but along this adventure she meets a array of characters who are all amazing and just add so much to the story. And lastly Nik will get you blood pumping, lots of mystery to the guy.
Wow, just wow..... I really enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down. Our girl Theia has her entire life turned upside down after her the death of her father, when her mother introduces her to the new family. And what a family it is. To top all this off, she starts a new school, meets a boy, misses her BFF, throw in a little murder mystery, and boom!! You are sucked into the story and can't get out either.
Polarized society. Divided races. Prejudices and fear. And one elkie thrown into the world of mages. Theia is the outcast, thanks to her mother who decided to marry the wannabe governor and not care about her daughter's wishes. Infamous at new school after first day, she is even forced to swap her best friend Gus for mean and selfish future stepsister Emerald. The only consolation she can find is presence of Nikolas - but even he keeps many secrets, dangerous and unsettling, and his closed-off attitude does not help Theia settle at all.. Fabulous world of the sun class and moon class mages and other supernatural races that struggle to restore the delicate balance. On the contrary, the tension escalates page by page, and as more machinations come to light, the story takes more and more ominous turn, building the expectation of something bad to happen. Theia is a heroine that is easy to identify with and very likable, and Nikolas has the aura of mr. tall-dark-and-handsome with the undercurrent of darkness and danger along the rough edges. They are quite the sight, and their story is full of adventure, passion, and determination to find the means to the end despite all mortal threats.
Theia has her entire world changed on a dime thanks to her mother. Overnight she was told her recently widowed mother was remarrying and they were leaving all she'd ever known behind. Who doesn't tell their child they're dating until SURPRISE they're already engaged?! WTH?!? Not only that, but she'd be surrounded by Celestials that don't exactly love her own Elkie, pointed ear self. No family, no friends...and her mother doesn't even spend a moment to say goodbye to her father's family. Here begins the huge adventure to come! Wow!!! Oh so much craziness to come, and T meets her very own supernatural Scooby Gang 😀. If you like adventure, crazy antics, bringing secrets to light, political intrigue, subterfuge, and righting ohhhhhh so many wrongs, AND a potential soon to be evil step sister??? Suffice to say this is the book for you! I can't wait to see what happens in the next book. Be warned though, there's a huge cliffhanger but it's oh so worth it!!!!! This Elkie female wrapped herself around my heart and had me cheering from the sidelines!! It sucked me in From the very first chapter and left me wanting oh so much more 😊😊😊
*I have received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review*
This was such a fresh and inspiring story. A new approach to the supernatural. I haven't come across this type of world placement in any of the paranormal books I've read. I have got to say that I loved Theia and her elkie ears. Those were so cute. And her personality did not disappoint. I always enjoy reading a headstrong, loyal and brave heroine. For Nik I have mixed feelings but he is starting to grow on me. I loved the rest of the A-Team. A lovely bunch of misfits. I enjoyed the action and the plot. And it's ridiculous how many threads can develop for all the characters from the actions of just one person. The villains were pretty bad and convincing. The good guys were on the rise and I envision only awesomeness from now on. I cannot wait for the next installment since this ended on a slight cliffhanger.
Shadow Rising was a book unlike any other! It's unique storyline sucked me in right from the start and never let go. Separating people into sun-classed and moon-classed was purely inspirational, and made this book different from others that I have read. By it's nature. this brings out cultural biases and societal prejudices that threaten to undermind their entire social strucure. Some people are fighting for change while others are desparately clinging to the peaceful past. Will this mean war? The storyline was fast-paced, filled with magic and mayhem, twists and turns, danger, intrigue and adventure. The characters were well-developed and engaging, each with their own cultural heritage. I can't wait to see what the rest of the series brings!
Wow what an amazing story it has you addicted right from the start and your not going to be able to put it down until the end because I couldn’t either but be warned there’s a massive cliffhanger at the end and now I need the next book. Theia’s mother is getting married again but Theia didn’t even know that she was even dating anyone and she has to move in with the evil stepfather and his daughters talk about your life turned upside down. Sorry guys I’m not going to get into too much of this story so read the blurb and that will give you the gist to this story, a very entertaining, exciting and original story it’s a 5 plus ⭐️ read and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.
ONE ENTERTAINING ADVENTURE!!! Hook, line and sinker! Grappling with a multitude of trials, plot twists and turns while trying to balance on a double edge sword. A host of unforseen surprises and thorny circumstances propel your emotions into play beautifully. Bravely battling a throng of danger and suspense keeping you flipping page after page. This baby is as riveting as it is captivating. One turbulent storyline and raging plot catapults this beauty to life nicely. The characters are authentic and realistic with depth and traits that blend and flow. The scenes are so vividly detailed it gives the illusion you were right there with them. Remarkable job guys, thanks for sharing.
I really enjoyed this, very well written and hard to put down. In a world with different types of supernaturals, the world is divided in to Sun and Moon class. Sun feel they are superior. Theia is a half breed Elkie/mage. Her Ellie father, died a year ago. Her mage mother springs a new marriage onto her, which results in her looking for ways to get her mother out of the relationship. She also looks for ways to unite the supernatural community. She becomes a scape goat for political means and this sees us to on an adventure to uncover the truth. Looking forward to the next book, to see where it goes next.
In a world were there is magic all around and are leaders in the communities. But there is also segregation between classes of magic users and type of paranormal. And it’s about to get worse if a certain person gets elected in the upcoming election. And he happens to be the main characters soon to be step father. But she sees that not all is as it seems and the man her mother is about to marry is not the good guy he portrays. Lots of action and adventure throughout the book. This is the first book of a series and has a bit of a cliffhanger. Looking forward to the next book.
Theia is an Elkie, being uprooted from the only home she knows after her mom announces she’s engaged to a mayoral candidate for sun New York City. She’s thrown into a totally new life, with people judging her by her class, and a soon to be step dad and step sister that hate her on sight. Luckily, she meets some new friends, and together they decide to try to take her step dad down. But they only have a short amount of time, and it almost seems impossible.
I really enjoyed this story and I can’t wait for the next one!
This book held my interest from the beginning. Psycho stepdad’s , sisters and mom plus supernatural sh¡t .Like wtf is wrong with T’s mom seriously disappointing at her lack of Motherly instincts. I hope her grandparents help her out. I wish nik would stop being a douche. It would be nice if N & R’s parents teamed up to help out New York, and the Sirens need to Stick around. Oh and the nun goes down ( I bet she’s a$$holes mom)
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Loved it! From start to finish you have the fiesty kick ass main character, the sexy love interest, the best friends a girl could ever have, the back stabbing characters (no spoilers as to who) but best of all the continuesly flowing plot with its twists and turns and the segue into book two. I thoroughly enjoyed this team write but after reading a different book by one of the authors I knew this book had potential. I can't wait for book two.
The story would have been great, but she threw in "liberal this and liberal that", and made her views very clear when it comes to politics. There are better ways to do this than throwing it in your readers face every 5 seconds. The story has great potential, but I couldn't get through it.
Awesome read! So much adventure and the kiss and bathe end...FINALLY! But questions: Is Theia’s mom a complete idiot or has she been completely bamboozled by Geiser? Why does he hate Theia so much? What does he gain by having her killed or out of the way? So many unanswered questions...I want to know. Looking forward to the next book.
