Robbie Chin’s mother always told her not to make a scene and never draw attention. But where did that get Robbie? Packed in her car with all her meagre belongings after her perfect boyfriend of eight years—Dr. Nathan Tang—decided there was no more spark in her. That’s where. Convinced all Nathan needs is a little time on his own to come to his senses, Robbie sets out on a road trip from New York to San Francisco to attend her parents’ anniversary party, certain Nathan will meet her there, if not sooner. If not, Robbie will be forced to admit to her mother that she managed to ruin everything her mother hoped for. But when Robbie picks up The Brat, otherwise known as Ernie Wolfe, her best friend’s younger brother, he not only rides shotgun, but navigates Robbie into new territories. It isn’t long before Robbie finds herself veering further off the path she thought she belonged on with nothing but her heart to guide her. Going home is supposed to be safe and familiar. Robbie never thought it would lead to the biggest adventure of her life.

Join Robbie on her roadtrip adventure!
Beautiful story about racism, friendship, growing up and finding your own way. Staying true to yourself isn't easy when dealing with your family's expectations and outsider's prejudices. Sometimes you need a few adventures to get you back on the right track.
Preferably in the company of good friends.

I adored this book soooo much! Robbie Chin has always tried to stay out of the lime light because her mother always told her to not draw attention to herself. She was in an eight year relationship with Dr. Nathan Tang, which made her mother happy, but one day the Doctor decided that Robbie had no spark.

Shocked beyond belief, Robbie packs her belongings in her car and heads out on a cross-country road trip to go back home for her parents’ anniversary party. She picks up a co-pilot, Ernie, for the trip. Ernie is her best friend’s younger brother and he is such a free spirit. A series of events happen as the road trip progresses and Robbie finds herself letting all of her walls down as Ernie encourages her and insists on adventures.

By the time they make it back to their home town, both Robbie and Ernie have found pieces of themselves that they didn’t realize were missing.

I could not put this book down. I loved how the story unfolded between flashbacks and present day. It really enhanced the characters’ stories and helped paint the picture for why they are the way they are in present day. This story was one of growth and realizations, and it tackled a lot of different issues such as race, social classes, friendship, family dynamics, and of course love. I laughed, I cried, I sympathized. This was so much more than just a romance and I really did not want it to end. In fact, I even told the author that I need her to write sequel 😉

I have now finished the last book I needed to of Bex’s!! ⁣

𝘙𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 was definitely harder to read but it was a really important one. There was stuff about the Asian culture that was tough to read but then there were also cute, romantic, fun parts. ⁣

Obviously, I am Asian. I am Chinese and Bex is half Chinese also. There were lot’s of spots in the book that were “jaw-dropping” moments because this stuff does happen in real life. ⁣

I had a conversation with Bex and the conversations in her book, they were real for her and that disgusts me. I am not going to give exact details because you should read this for yourself. It sucks that we live in a world where people assume you are a certain way because of your ethnicity, no matter what ethnicity you are. ⁣

I encourage you all to read this. It is hard to read at times because everything is real and happens to real people, like Bex. ⁣

Moving on — the book itself was so good. I loved the relationship between Nick and Robbie. The conversations that they have are so effortless. The adventures he had her go on are definitely ones that not everyone would be comfortable with but that’s what makes them adventures, right? Being able to get out of your comfort zone and experiencing something slightly crazy but also fun.⁣

Bex asked me who my favorite hero is from all 3 of her books and I said I love all of them for different reasons but if I had to have one of them walk through the door then I would choose Nick. He’s always had Robbies best interest at heart and loves her for who she is, not what the world thinks she should be; flawless. He loves to travel and being able to travel with your forever human would be amazing. Also, he’s a photographer so you’d have the perfect insta boyfriend/husband.⁣

Beautiful life journey - great summer read!
This was an enjoyable summer read, but so much more. I was immediately drawn into Robbie's journey. Ms. Jalise's writing has an easy flow. The characters are multi-dimensional and so relatable. I found myself routing for them as though they were my own friends. And the family dynamics - well suffice to say the author touch my heart with her exploration of the why's and how's families manage over the years. My first book by this author - will not be my last!
