Forces beyond their control may cost them everything before the mistakes from the past can be rectified. 'The Five Points Series', Book one, introduces a burning passion so strong, the river cascading over Blackwater Falls couldn't put it out.
I grew up a voracious reader, feeding my imagination with books. I spent hours exploring the woods around my farm, pretending I was “Hawkeye”, surviving in the wilderness. I climbed into the hayloft of our barn, looking for “Charlotte” among the spider webs. Later, I looked in every wardrobe I could trying to find “Narnia and Aslan”. As an adult, I can still remember reading my first novel with a lesbian character and how it made me feel to finally identify in an entirely new way. My adventure into writing came at the suggestion of my wife. Several years ago, she asked me to write her a story. I began crafting her personalized gifts for holidays and special occasions, by writing stories for her. I’d weave in pieces and parts of our life. My brain started asking “what if” after she mentioned forgetting I’d written the story until something sounded familiar. My wife and I are part owners of an active produce farm and a U Pick strawberry operation on my wife’s family land all while I continue into my twenty fifth year as a full-time firefighter. On top of all that, we built our dream home in 2016, on property we’ve been clearing and preparing for fourteen years. Now we reside on 221 acres of woodland in the mountains of West Virginia, with three cats as I pine away for another promised Border Collie. We love to go watch our Mountaineers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Steelers. We love leading our great niece and nephews on adventures to fuel their imagination and creativity as we watch them grow.

4.25 Stars. This was really enjoyable! I decided to take a quick break from ARC’s to read some books that have been on my ‘to read list’ all year. I love books about women in uniform so I thought this would be a good place to start. This is actually my first book by Murphy but it won’t be my last. This was a good action romance book and I’m excited to see that a book two is out already.
This was a feel good romance with two women in their early 50’s. I liked that this book wasn’t with the usual 20 or 30 year-olds. How many times do you read an action packed book staring a woman who is 54? It just doesn’t really happen and I love variety and things that are different so that hooked me right there.
The setting was really nice. A medium town with enough crime to keep things interesting, but still lots of rural area too so you also had the excitement of search and rescue. It was the perfect mix to weave action in with the romance that kept me turning the pages.
While this is a real feel good romance that is low angst that does not mean that there wasn’t any drama. Actually there was a good amount of drama that I enjoyed and it gave the book the conflict it needed. I like when a book has drama that comes from outside the couple, instead of always just making the drama be a misunderstanding between the couple themselves.
I would absolutely recommend this to romance fans that like some action and excitement to keep the pages turning. I had some high hopes for this and I’m happy that it filled them. I really liked Murphy’s story choices and I can’t wait to read more.
You know you’re about to read something special when the author’s tribute to her wife in the Acknowledgments gets you all misty eyed.
Gold Star Chance is the story of a career First Responder, Chance Fitzsimmons, who’s done everything from being a Smoke Jumper to being an emergency rescuer to now being sheriff of a lively, rural county in West Virginia. She’s partnered with a gorgeous Belgian Malinois named Zeus and together they patrol the state parks and quaint towns that are Tucker County. First of a series, there’s romance and bad guys aplenty so the story is flush with action and steam, with more promised down the road as the book has introduced secondary characters that I’m sure will be spotlighted in the next episodes. Family and friends are everything to Chance so every action carries weight as well as affection.
Chance is like a fine Captain America, courageous and full of integrity, also broad shouldered, tall, and smoothly able to lift women with ease...Anyway, this flawlessness may aggravate some readers but I was very happy.
Two parallel stories of second chance flames are present. One is about the main romance which is her first love, Dr Jax St. Claire, who Chance gets to woo again 33 years after high school. Very gushingly romantic. The second one concerns Chance’s crash and burn ex who word has it is now happily married to another woman. Although there is a solid ending, there is also a bit of cliffhanger type angst which makes a good segue to book two. 4.5 stars from me.
I was curious to read this story featuring small town Sheriff Chance Fitzsimmons as she deals with drug runners, an angry ex wife and a disgruntled employee. When her highschool crush returns to Tucker County to take over her Uncle’s Veterinary Service it’s only a matter of time before these former lovers fall back into love.
I enjoy a police procedural and a cop’s life is always action packed. I was enjoying this read until I wasn’t. Chance is larger than life, a John Wayne hero in a small town. The hero worship was constant and overdone. Jax the Vet was the girl Chance never stopped loving and the whole story felt melodramatic. Issues like family coping with the risks inherent in certain careers were repeated chapter after chapter. There were dramatic rescues and dangerous bad guys to deal with but the constant focus on heroic Chance became eye-rolling and cartoonish. I’m not enough of a flag waver to be able to appreciate this much patriotism and hero worship. Don’t even get me started on how unrealistic it is to find a town filled with so many lesbians.
If you love larger than life characters who honor their fathers and fight the good fight this may be a book you enjoy. Too melodramatic for this reader.
Chance is a highly encouraging woman, specifically in the way she always found a way to get back on her own two feet and keep on moving forward despite the circumstances. Her strength and devotion to the ones most important to her is what makes Chance such a wonderful woman. A woman to admire and look up to. Chance cares deeply for her friends and family. She is definitely the person you want next to you if you're faced with an unfortunate event of any kind. This book really shows what emergency services work is all about and much more. There are life-threatening situations, heartwarming interactions, a second chance at love, an unforgettable cast of strong-minded women (whose flaws make them so very real), dedicated dog teams, a kidnapping and it all take place in a perfect setting. Both the suspense and romance aspects of the storyline are masterfully dealt with. An exciting and emotional story that highlights the lives and loves of those who choose to serve as emergency responders. Chance is the heart of this story and she loved her job as a sheriff. Her job is stressful and potentially dangerous. The imminent danger is a constant source of worry to the mothers of Chance and not unjustifiably given the scars that Chance has sustained. The moms are amazing women full of humor and their banter with Chance are hilarious. I really liked the family atmosphere and the respect they have for each other. When Chance has an unexpected encounter with a woman from her past, the only woman who’s ever swept her off her feet, Chance life changed. The delicious chemistry between them is breathtaking and together they form a solid team. I hope I get to spend more time with Chance, her family and friends in the future. An excellent start to a new series and definitely a Gold Star worth.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Likeable or at least well developed characters (both the MCs and the secondary ones), the plot made sense, there wasn't drama just for the sake of drama (which actually made me surprised, because the MCs communicated like reasonable adults, and I've gotten used to "miscommunication drama" in lesfics),...
Simply put it was a very enjoyable romance, not really crime-heavy (except for a few parts). I'd almost classify as a feel-good book :) Now onto the second one ...
Ticks so many boxes I can hardly see straight. Good yarn, full of love and family, adventure, goodies and baddies, and plenty of strands to keep it going for many books, no doubt. Truely enjoyed it, but worry if I read on into the series I'll find it forced. (My real hate: a superb book has a follow up which creates tension for the sake of a new book, not for the good of the characters - discuss!) Whoops, part 2 not yet out - "autumn 2019" - even though 1st chapter in my edition of Book 1.
I made the mistake of starting this an hour before bed. Chill out and do a little reading before shut eye. I DO NOT recommend anyone else do that. LOL. This book was all kinds of excellent. I really loved it and can't wait for book 2. I have a feeling Chance's sister Kendra might play a bigger role, we'll see :)
Had high expectations and got repetitive and boring in the middle for me. Loved Jax’s character. The constant mother smothering on Chance had me cringing and skipping pages. Chance was a title too stiff for me. Reminded me of Radclyffe’s Provincetown Reese but couldn’t connect with Chance like I did with Reese. 3.5 rounded down.
I loved this book. It’s like a Sheriff Walt Longmire story only instead it’s about a strong, principled woman named Sheriff Chance Fitzsimmons (if you don’t know who Longmire is your missing out), Chance is a 54 year old Sheriff in a small county in West Virginia. She is a former smokejumper and park ranger and she has all the scars to prove it. Chance had a girlfriend in high school that she never really forgot. The girlfriend, Jax, moved away 30 years ago to get away from her homophobic Mother, went to Veterinary school, and married but never forgot Chance. This book is the first in a series about the Sheriff and Jax, family, law and order, crime, and the people around it all.
It’s romance and action rolled together and this book starts everything off. I’m looking forward to this series. Enjoy 😊
Oooo I really liked this one. I don't know what it's like in the US, especially in small town West Virginia, but having so many lesbians seems like some sort of utopia. Is this even possible?
Anyway, I loved both Jax and Chance, but all of the characters that make up this book and the Five Point series are pretty endearing too. I'm truly looking forward for the next book to come out 'cause I have lots of things I need to know... like, is Taylor and Penny having a boy or girl? Did Daniel pass the test and get the job? Does Kendra's love interest last to meet Mom Squared? How's Uncle Marty doing now? I must have my answers!

Goldie winner CJ Murphy has done it again with a wonderful love story and a side of action....Yup the fast paced nature of the book was a welcome surprise. Since this is going to be a series, I am looking forward to the follow-up books...I eagerly read the short snippet for the next book. The other wonderful surprise was the age of the main characters. With so many novels featuring women so much younger than myself, it was refreshing to read about sexy mature women! Yes, women can be sexy in their 50s and even 60s...my wife sure is. Thanks for that little jewel.
Excellent first book to the series. I love Chance and Jax. Both are in their 50s and carry scars both emotionally and physically. Sparks fly when Chance and Jax run into another again, after Jax moves back to town to take over her uncles veterinary practice. The connection and attraction is still there after around 30 years of separation. I love the secondary characters the moms squared, Zeus, uncle Marty, Taylor and Penny, Sarah and Kristi, Kendra, and the other animals.

We really wish some of these all-lesbian towns imagined by authors would actually exist. Moms, friends, sisters, colleagues…everyone in the world in this book are gay. And supportive. And efficient. And…let’s just say, all things perfect.
I truly enjoyed this story! The main characters Chance and Jax were star crossed lovers when they were in their late teens. 30+ years later, they get another chance at love again. The Moms square were totally adorable as was the rest of the supporting cast of characters. Faith was not likable. She had control issues that need to be resolved. Hopefully in the upcoming sequel. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series!
CJ Murphy has the skill, knowledge and ability to write beautiful, engaging and endearing stories that you can’t help but love. This book is no exception!!
There is so much going on in this book. There is danger, drugs and dastardly deeds, shootings, Sheriffs and stitches, kidnapping, killers and K-9s, rescues and rejects, horses and Highway Patrol, friends, family and fallen heroes. There are search and rescue teams, paramedics and doctors, demented and otherwise, and a lovely veterinarian named Jax. At the center of all this chaos is Sheriff Chance Fitzsimmons.
Chance is an amazing, dynamic, charismatic and complex woman who feels everything deeply and will do everything in her power to keep those who depend on her safe and sound. After more than 30 years apart, the love of Chance’s life, Jax is back and they are ready to pick up where they left off. Together the couple grow closer and deeper in love while the dangers of big city life encroaches on their county.
I was fascinated by the story all the way through and when I got to the end, I was so excited to see that while Ms. Murphy drew things to a satisfying end, she left enough unsolved and unanswered to write a sequel. I cannot wait!!!
I received an ARC for an honest review Available at Desert Palm Press and soon Amazon.com
3.25 stars. I read this book because of all the high ratings but I wasn’t impressed... there was a lot of telling rather than showing. I put the book down more times than I could count. Just didn’t hold my attention. It’s a very sweet book where things almost click too perfectly. It was fresh in that the characters were older and it was obvious that the author had good knowledge of law enforcement. That brought my rating up a bit but in the end it took me over a week to get through the book and I don’t really want to read more.
I enjoy reading and I love a well written book. The characters are well rounded, it is interesting to see how a smaller community deals with the problems a bigger city has. To have the various law enforcement agencies work together, wow. Chance, Jacqueline and, Maggie,Dee, the rest of the cast are so close but not overly intrusive. They respect each other and protective of Chance ,who is one of the main characters, she is what a lot people would like in themselves as well as others. But will admit she is not perfect. I recommend this book, get a cup of coffee, your favourite chair and relax because you won't want to put this down. Can't wait for the next one.
I enjoyed this book. It’s a good story that is well written. Some of it is a touch unrealistic, but I’m not looking or that in my fiction. All’s well that ends well, and I will definitely be reading the sequel as soon as it’s available.
This is the first book I've read by the author and she greatly impressed me. I bought this on the strength of the blurb which really made me want to buy the book. The small town setting very much reminded me of Ann McMan. Whilst I had to suspend my belief at the number of lesbians in one small area and in the same family, it kinda felt good that it was the acceptable norm. The lead characters were likeable and noble, and the love story existed alongside other intriguing strands of the story.
The emergency services responses and protocols were described in detail by someone very familiar with the inner workings of such services. There was a bit of jargon but to dumb it down would have been inauthentic.
There was a teaser chapter for the next installment which I'm very much look forward to. CJ Murphy has a new fan!
Very much enjoyed this book. Moving on to book 2. I find myself living vicariously through Chance and characters like her. Being less than 5 foot tall, I was never good enough to join the police force or the military in the 70's and 80's, despite being one of the top 3 Women's powerlifters in the Pennsylvania/ WVA and Ohio tri-state areas. So I went into medicine.? One of my favorite moments in the book was when Chance called Maggie and Dee "Mom Squared". In 1990, when I met the Love of my Life, my son started calling us "Moms Square". I felt that moment again, after 30 years of loving the same Woman who stole my heart with one glance. I am looking forward to the journies of Jax and Chance in the upcoming sequels. Thanks for providing an old lady with fond memories and a painless way to live her dreams!
Great story from page one you liked the characters and very quickly became invested in their lives. Just like that from page one. Not many authors can do that but this one can. I have found lately that some of our books have a sameness and it gets boring I have given up on so many books because the characters don't talk to each other in till the last chapter . You will be very glad to here this does not happen here. It's two am in the morning but I had to know what happened next. It's great to find a book like that, then discover there is a follow up.I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Thank you for a great book.
This was my first book by CJ Murphy and I greatly enjoyed it and immediately started book 2. This book follows Chance a Sheriff in West Virginia who runs into their old flame 30 years ago, Jax. Jax moved back to West Virginia after 30 years in California. The romance between them was sweet and heartfelt and I was sucked into all of the characters of this book. One of the things I enjoyed the most is that most of the characters are over 50, providing a wonderful reminder that its never too late to find love.
I loved this book. I enjoy law enforcement, first responder and medical stories, and this is a good one. It helps that the author and her wife were genuine first responders themselves. Chance is a sheriff in a small town that reunites with her high school love many years later. There’s a sweet love story here, along with some suspense, and a wealth of additional characters that make a wonderful read. This is the first book I have read by this author, and I’m excited to read the other books in the series. Read this book. You won’t be disappointed.
I loved this book. The characters were believable, the situations at times tense, but there wasn't any made-up angst. Adults, with adult relationships. And the best part? The main characters are over fifty! Yes! Grown-ups! I look forward to the next book in the series (thanks to the teensie tease at the end of this book), and can't wait to see what Chance, Jax and the rest of the gang get into, next.
I've read all of the authors books so far and I am thrilled that this will be a series. The story line hits close too home with the drug crisis that many states are enduring. I'm looking forward to hearing all about the memorable characters including Chance and Jax and the future they are trying to build. Love knows no age and has no boundaries that can't be overcome.
The story revolves around a great group of Characters. Chance a Sheriff who has a K9 dog as do her colleagues. There is. a vet called Jax who has returned home after thirty years Andreas Chance's first love. So many more to meet. This is a great read and story and well worth getting. CJ Murphy (author) did a brilliant job writing this and cannot wait for the next one in this series which is due out Autumn 2019. A well deserved 5++ stars.
I thoroughly enjoy this story. The lost love. The one that got away coming back to take over her Uncles veterinary practice. The action that seems to always end Chance up injured and at the mercy of her ex who is a doctor in the ER who still in love with the beautiful sheriff.
I can't wait for the second book to continue with Chance's life and the new graduates waiting to take the exam to become Deputies.
CJ Murphy is a new author for me. This book was recommended by author Nancy Ann Healy. I read all genres of romance. I also have found that I enjoy series. The Five Points series has been added to my must read list. The characters are well written and you could feel the many friendships that a small town can create. I look forward to reading all the books that will be part of this series.
