It's Dillon McAllister's grim duty to track down alien-infected humans-aka "Haunts"-and quarantine them to the Outer Banks for their protection. His job disgusts him, but he continues because if he can get to them before the other hunters, at least they'll be treated with respect.

But now he as a new client with a different to get a pharmaceutical executive's daughter out of the Outer Banks, because she may hold the key to a cure.

Dr. Emery Mitchell hates what she's become, but she knows she may be the only hope for three hundred thousand detainees isolated on the North Carolina barrier islands-including herself.

Dillon is the only man who seems to be able to see the woman behind the black eyes and cool skin, and as she slowly begins to trust him, she starts to see herself as he sees her. A human woman with a human heart.

As society begins to unravel, the pressure is on to find a cure before the hate groups calling for eradication can no longer be drowned out.

I found this book at a thrift store. The cover drew me to it, but the summary made me want to buy it.

Aliens attack and kill a bunch of people, and then they bury them in the ground before leaving. Cities are wrecked, and now many of the dead (from the alien attacks) are digging their way out of the ground. Not everyone comes back to life. Those that do are somewhat like vampires. They sleep like the dead during the day, sunlight kills them, and they drink blood. Also they are virtually indestructible, and they have solid black eyes.

After several attacks, from not having blood to drink, a type of camp is set up on the Outer Banks. The changed people are still themselves, as far as their personalities go. They are now called Haunts.

Dillion is now a “hunter.” He brings Haunts to the Outer Banks. But now a rich guy wants Dillion to breakout his brilliant doctor daughter. He believes that she can find the cure.

I really enjoyed the sci-fi and human elements of this story. Then you add a realistic romance to it. Love it! What I wasn’t expecting was that this is book 1 of a series. I immediately ordered book 2.
