Every Christian should read the book of Psalms regularly; it's got a lot to say! Many people think it's the Bible's longest book...but they're wrong; while it may have the most chapters, Jeremiah actually has the most words of any of the sixty-six volumes within God's Word. Seriously, many of the Psalms only take a minute or two to read, even for a slow reader...but the advice they impart is priceless!
To be honest, I haven’t read the Psalms all that much—mostly just in my Bible-in-a-year-challenge. I have a new challenge of reading a Psalm & chapter in Proverbs every day, and boy, it’s making me appreciate the Psalms so much more. I can’t even express how good these are… 🥰 Every year they surprise me again by how powerful and relevant they are, how much human emotion and Divine wisdom they contain…
Okay, so I'll be honest, I didn't actually read every single Psalm, but selected the ones that seemed most appealing. Psalms does bring back a strong childhood memory for me though. While I was going to church, the lady who taught us children separately from the adults part way through the church service, got all us children who were old enough, to learn Psalms 23 (The Lord Our Shepherd) off by heart. Once we felt ready, we each had to stand up and say it out loud to the rest of the church goers. I remember being so nervous, as I was very shy, but also proud of myself for facing my own fear and achieving it.
“The Lord reigns; Let the earth rejoice; Let the multitude of isles be glad! Clouds and darkness surround Him; Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. A fire goes before Him, And burns up His enemies round about. His lightnings light the world; The earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord, At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth. The heavens declare His righteousness, And all the peoples see His glory.” Psalms 97:1-6
The Psalms, ESV (Wheaton, IL: Crossway, 2014). Hardcover
The Psalter is the prayerbook of Israel and the Church. Unfortunately, many American evangelicals do not make regular use of it in their personal and corporate worship. Some years ago, I began using it for morning and evening prayer, and I have found my faith in God enriched through the practice.
A few months ago, I discovered that Crossway had published The Psalms, using its English Standard Version. The ESV is a good translation, though it is not the translation I use most regularly. Nonetheless, I was impressed with the beauty and utility of The Psalms and decided to use it for personal worship.
What makes The Psalms helpful?
First, it presents the psalms in a single column, removes explanatory subheads and notes, and moves the chapter and verse numbers to the side so that they do not intrude on the reader's vision. This has the effect of emphasizing the poetic structure of the individual psalms and concentrating the reader's attention on their words. The Psalms is a beautiful presentation of the Psalter's beautiful prayers.
Second, The Psalms is well constructed, with a leather-like cover over hard board. Its pages are thick--unlike the onion paper of most Bibles--and hence durable for daily use. Finally, it fits easily into the hand, large enough to accommodate pages with a good-size font but not so large that it is unwieldy. This is a prayer book-sized Psalter, easy to hold and small enough to fit into a suit pocket or purse.
Finally, though the ESV is not my preferred translation, as noted above, I find its translation of the psalms very helpful. The word-for-word (or formally equivalent translation) retains much of the language of the King James Version (and its English successor translations) without being antiquarian.
Obviously, if you don't use the Psalter daily, there is no special need to purchase The Psalms in any translation--let alone the ESV--when you can simply read them in your Bible. On the other hand, if you do use the Psalter as a daily prayer book, The Psalms is an option that you should look into.
All of that and so much more are available to us in the book of Psalms. God is so much greater than we can imagine, but we get fantastic glimpses of His character and love within this book. It’s a favorite of mine, one I dip into time and time again. I hope you will too.
Go on. Dive in. Discover His immense and unending love for you.
Amazing. The Bible's books of psalms encompasses one hundred and fifty of the finest Hebrew poetry from 3,400 years ago to about 2,400 years. What's so great about Hebrew poetry? Imagery.
When I look unto the heavens, which thine Own fingers framed, Unto the moon and to the stars, which were by thee ordained, Then say I, "What is man that Thou, should be mindful of him? Or what the Son of Man that Thou, so kind to Him should be?" Psalm 8, from a hymn.
The book of Psalms is full of images and phrases that are part of the fabric of our society. Consider the world-famous 23rd Psalm
The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures.
But beautiful imagery is not all. The Psalms are full of fulfilled prophecies, like Psalm 22 where you find six fulfilled prophecies in 18 verses:
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Jesus' words while on the cross) Why are you so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning? 2 My God, I cry in the daytime, but you don’t answer; in the night season, and am not silent. 3 But you are holy, you who inhabit the praises of Israel. 4 Our fathers trusted in you. They trusted, and you delivered them. 5 They cried to you, and were delivered. They trusted in you, and were not disappointed. 6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised by the people. 7 All those who see me mock me. (Verses 7-8 were fulfilled by those mocking Jesus on the cross) They insult me with their lips. They shake their heads, saying, 8 “He trusts in Yahweh; let him deliver him. Let him rescue him, since he delights in him.” 9 But you brought me out of the womb. (Jesus being conceived and born of a virgin by a miracle) You made me trust at my mother’s breasts. 10 I was thrown on you from my mother’s womb. You are my God since my mother bore me. 11 Don’t be far from me, for trouble is near. For there is no one to help. 12 Many bulls have surrounded me. Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me. 13 They open their mouths wide against me, lions tearing prey and roaring. 14 I am poured out like water. All my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax; it is melted within me. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. (Jesus' words on the cross 'I thirst' prophesied) You have brought me into the dust of death. 16 For dogs have surrounded me. A company of evildoers have enclosed me. They have pierced my hands and feet. (A prophecy of Jesus' crucifixion, before it was invented) 17 I can count all of my bones. They look and stare at me. 18 They divide my garments among them. (A prophecy of Roman soldiers gambling over Jesus' clothing) They cast lots for my clothing.
But you have to find out for yourself. Read the book of Psalms looking for imagery and prophecy, fulfilled and to be fulfilled. It'll transform your experience.
March-April 2018 read-through. The book of Psalm is truly amazing and one of my favorite books of the Bible. I find such encouragement and comfort here. So much emotion I can relate to. And often when reading through different chapters of Psalm, my soul just swells with the desire to worship my Creator and God! Praise the Lord! I really enjoyed reading through this book as well as Proverbs in a month. The Word of God is awesome and powerful.
Some of my favorite chapters in Psalm this time around were: Psalm 27, Psalm 37, Psalm 84, and Psalm 148.
"Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, for in You do I trust; cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to You." Psalm 143:8

Really deep, lovely, poignant, lyrical, profound book! King David (who wrote most of the Psalms ... right?) was quite a man! I'm astounded and awed over and over at how real he is with God! But I suppose that's what God wants; He already knows what our hearts are feeling, why not just tell Him? After all, He is supposed to be our all-loving Father, faithful best Friend, and amazing Redeemer. We should be humbled and awed, yet able to bring everything before God. Everything! So yes. The Psalms are just so wonderful to read through. Learn. And be comforted. And find hope. Praise God. Lift your soul in joy! Know you're not alone in sin and struggle. Take warning and find courage. Know God is ALWAYS there.
I especially love Psalm 23, Psalm 91, Psalm 139, and also the last few chapter of the book (so much praising! *smiles*)
Awesome book. Great place to start if you want to read from the Old Testament!
I picked up this little leather bound psalter and it’s been a joy to throw it in my bag and read through the psalms every month. This has been a little nudge that I needed to stay in the Psalms every day.
This one is almost as thick as my bible that has all 66 books. I like the thicker pages and that every right hand page just has dotted lines. The print is also a little bigger with very wide margins which is mostly nice except sometimes a short Psalm will end up three verses on one page and three on another. Overall, I have really enjoyed using this as a study bible to keep notes in!
Really helpful formatting in this pocket edition. The poetic indentations make this Treasury way clearer than otherwise. Also, I love that I can carry my Psalter around now. I look forward to read it many more times.
In January of 2020 I had a strong feeling I needed to read the Psalms with my Small Group girls. I wasn't sure why. But, just 2 months later as our world turned upside down...there was no better place in the Bible for us to be camped out. The Lord knew exactly what we would need. As one of my girls said, "The Psalms have been good to us." We paused and have done other studies...but this summer I really wanted to come back and finish. And I am so glad I did.
What a powerful book of scripture. If you are in a place that you wonder...where are you Lord? Have you forgotten me? Or just overwhelmed and discouraged...Meet the Lord again in the Psalms and be reminded: He is Faithful.
As always, I recommend a Bible study help like the First 5 app that provides a short teaching for each chapter. It's like cliff notes to help you take it slowly and understand what you are reading.
I'm not sure why I took so long to finish reading the Psalms, but maybe it's because the beauty of poetry requires time and focus to be appreciated. Ancient Hebrew poetry is lovely, even when translated into English. Rhyming thoughts and unique expressions create poetic emotion in English. I do wish I could read the Acrostic Psalms (e.g. Psalm 119) in the original Hebrew. I can't fully appreciate the special effort put into them or notice the beautiful symmetry.
The five books of Psalms correspond in theme to the five books of the Pentateuch. Someday I want to read them back-to-back!
I absolutely love the size of this book. I carry in my bag all the time. There is plenty of space in the margins to write lots of notes. This book comes in so handy to read on the bus and train. It's perfect for praying while on a commute.
I plan on buying more of these books to give to friends and family.
In fact I find myself writing so many notes in this book, that I'm gonna scan some of the pages with lots of notes and put them online. I just really love this book.
This is my second time through the psalms in this beautiful little book. The layout, font, etc is simple and beautiful. The size is wonderful for keeping handy, though a bit too large for most pockets.
If you want to make reading the psalms a distinct part of your devotional life, a little volume like this can be a great help.
Took the last 2 years to pray through the Psalms. 10/10 would recommend! I especially benefitted from praying all the way through each genre, instead of numerically. So, for example, praying through all the praise Psalms, then all the lament Psalms, then all the trust Psalms, and so on.
This was a great year for me to read through the book of Psalms. Then again, every year would be a great year to read this profound book. But this year, it spoke to me like never before.
Uh, it's the Psalms. I feel like that's enough. No further explanation is necessary. So what are you waiting for? Read it! I just love the Psalms, and I want everyone to read it. 😊
Psalms is the most emotive and personal book I've read so far in the Bible. It features 150 songs/poems from various writers, ranging from Moses to David, Solomon, Heman and many more.
Some Psalms are very interesting and emotionally potent, like Psalm 88 and 137, and are thus interesting reads. Psalms also has the longest chapter in the Bible, Psalm 119, which is over 150 verses long.
Psalms is also a really long and repetitive book, so that does reduce my enjoyment a bit. Besides that, it's quite a compelling read.
I felt a little weird reviewing The Catechism of the Catholic Church since it covers the central beliefs of my faith. Could I say something critical about it without getting hit by lightning? Can I rate it less than five stars (or whatever the top limit is)? Now here I am, reviewing a book from the Bible, which seems like I'm taunting God with a lightning rod. I hope He doesn't mind...
The Book of Psalms is a classic of Judeo-Christian faith and of world literature. Psalm 23 ("The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want...") is perhaps the most famous poem in Western civilization. The psalms have been set to music several times (they are songs, after all) and quoted in literature for thousands of years.
This particular edition of the Psalms is the King James Version with illustrations by James Freemantle. Freemantle was a British soldier who traveled all over the Middle East. During his second marriage, he began to transcribe the Psalms and illustrate the book for his wife Clara. He included much of the flora and fauna of the Middle East, practically on every page of the book. It took over thirty years to complete and he died the year he finished it. His son decided many years later to publish his father's work in facsimile edition.
The book is quite beautiful. The illustrations are well done and lend a serene air to the sublime text. The lettering is also quite beautiful, though some individual psalms include different styles for each line. Occasionally the graphic designer in the back of my head would shout, "Too many fonts on one page!" I became better at ignoring that voice and enjoying the visual splendor of Freemantle's work.
Originally I was going to read this book and then pass it on to someone else or donate it to a book sale, since I have a bible or two if I want to look up or read a certain psalm. The book does add something to the experience of reading and praying that makes me want to pull it off the shelf occasionally to have that experience again. And to share it with my children. This one is a keeper.
How can you see God in the Psalms? The ESV Psalms, Photography Edition, is a beautiful reader-version of the Psalms paired with rich pictures of the Irish landscape.
Stir Your Soul The stunning scenery will cause you to slow down as you go through the book, giving your attention to the work of the photographer and the psalmist together. I found that the photos help to evoke emotion and make the moods of the Psalms seem a bit stronger. Even the more subtle pictures help to stir the soul.
Green and blue color seems to be a consistent theme. Lighter shades reveal a more serene atmosphere, while darker tones are displayed for Psalms of difficulty and danger. The layout of the chapters adds to the experience, giving the text space and letting the words breathe. You’ll see the Psalms come to life.
Restore Your Soul Bound in a handsome hardback book, this would make for a perfect gift or as a quality investment in your personal devotions. It comes in a sturdy slipcase and includes a ribbon marker. The entire book is a work of art that truly treasures God’s Word.
The beauty of the Irish landscape seen in the photos is that it seems to be free from the hustle and bustle of my modern American life. You can hear the water. You can feel the breeze. Creation sings to the Creator. God is a refuge and strength. He restores our souls.
I received a media copy of ESV Psalms, Photography Edition and this is my honest review.
