Dragons and riders clash in a battle of more than 200 hordesmen. As Trysten watches in horror, the dragon-shifting Originals kidnap one of her hordesmen and closest friends. As they disappear through the Gul Pass, Trysten must use her powers to end the battle instead of rescuing her friend.
When the dust settles, the fallen are accounted for, and the injured are healed, Trysten must decide whether or not to risk an incursion into the West to recover her friend. With the Western kingdom back on its heels, will she provoke them by flying a horde of dragons into their land? Will they find the West of mountain villages reported by some or the vast, vacant land described by others? When Trysten leads the Aerona horde to find their lost hordesman, will she finally seize the opportunity she has been after —a chance for lasting peace with the Western Kingdom?
The fifth book in The Dragoneer series continues the mysteries and action of this fantasy adventure. It features a strong, female hero and a compelling story appropriate for most ages.
How do you outthink an enemy whose lifespan has been centuries??
Trysten is caught up in a prophesy. The ‘Originals’ believe that she is a shard (it’s difficult to explain) of the first Adelina, a woman who had complete mastery of dragons and opposed a semi-charlatan of a wizard. Their last clash broke the world, according to the Originals, and they need Trysten and her dragon to come with them to set things right .. by dying.
As if this craziness weren’t enough, she’s trying to end a war with their neighbours. They and Trystan’s town of Aeron (and hence the kingdom of Cadwaller) have been in a retaliatory war with each other for as long as anyone can remember. Trysten discovers that the Originals have been attacking both sides, dressed as the other. So she’s hopeful a truce can be made.
Then there are the SeeIian’s on the other side of the realm who have been quiescent to now, but that’s about to change as they seek to gain mastery of the skies with the eggs of Elevera.
Oh, and her uncle may not see it to the next book.
With all this action, it seems like it would be hard to catch a breath, but it’s not. The pacing is such that, while we see a lot of action, there are enough breaks for us to catch our breath and get a view of more normal times and activities. Like trying to find recruits, training them, or finding and befriending a wild dragon. They give us a slice of village life that is endearing and makes us feel protective.
Trysten, for all that she’s young and having to be more forceful because she’s a woman, doesn’t come across as too strident, which I find off-putting. I’m hoping for an interest in her commander, Paege, but so far, there’s only flickers - which manifest mostly as appreciation rather than romance.
The series shows no signs of slowing down, and even on this fifth book, has not hit any doldrums.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have an ailing healer and an injured dragon to check on.
Dragoneer Book 5 – Between Kingdoms I just finished Between Kingdoms, and I have to say—this one really kept me hooked! We finally learn more about the Originals, and this time it’s from their perspective, which adds a whole new layer to the story. The world keeps expanding, and the stakes are higher than ever.
Trysten once again proves why she’s such a fierce and loyal heroine—her determination to save Kaylan had me glued to the pages. I love how her bond with the dragons continues to deepen, even as the threats around her grow darker. She manages to outsmart enemies, trust her instincts, and somehow still come out on top.
The pacing is fast, the revelations about the Originals are fascinating, and the emotional moments hit just right. I can’t wait to see how this all wraps up—I’m hoping it keeps charging ahead at this same thrilling pace!
I would just like to write a few lines to ask you to read this book. I normally don't like writing reviews, because I mostly talk about problems in books, (not that all of them are bad, but I always think they could do things differently). Yes, this one has a few problems, but I was so surprised by the quality of the book, the plot is fantastic, a female hero struggling to get what she believes in, just cool. I'll add the same review to all six books in the series if I like them as much as I loved this one.
A good continuation of the ongoing saga, however, the escape from the clutches of the Originals is confusing. I read it over several times, its intriguing & somewhat unique, but I'm still now sure what happened. Are the originals gone, trapped again, or escaped into the land in the Western or Eastern countries? TBE Saga continues?
An excellent book! Beginning to end, full of adventures and excitement! Dragons and riders face unbelievable obstacles and challenges as they fight for survival. Loses and victories lead them through unspeakable battles and trials, but they meet every one with courage and determination!
I could gush all night about this series, but I will not. Tristan and her Dragon Elevra the Gold are an unbeatable pair! Each book builds on the last. With only three books to go I am on the downhill stretch!!!
I got a little bit lost while reading this book, but it may have been because it was a month since I'd read book 4. I'd been enjoying reading this series, so I'm going straight to book 6, and get back into what's going on.
Trysten is going after Kaylar. She is taking the horde and going after the Originals. She will fight to keep the horde live. She will fight to go home. Another great book. I have enjoyed seeing the bond grow. I'm looking forward to the next one.
Wow, what a great addition to the story. I was wondering where the story might go after a great book 4. I was not disappointed. I can't wait till book 6.
So I drew finishing this one out a little, as I have to wait for book 6 to come out! Such a fabulous series! I love it, and I'm addicted! I highly recommend checking this series out!
This book keep my interests all the way through to the end. The love of the dragon and there people were very good to know how much they love one another
