A complete history of historical Heathen Saxony, and a complete analysis of historical Saxon Heathenry based on the historical literary sources and archaeological record. The Saxon Gods and Goddesses are explained; along with the Saxon customs, holidays, and rituals outlined in great detail. Saxon cosmology is explained, along with a retelling of Saxon folklore based on historical evidence and lore. All sections of Old Saxon poetry relevant to Saxon Heathenry are presented in both Old Saxon and translated along with modern English along with detailed analysis. This is a complete book on Aldsidu (Old Saxon Heathenry).
I bought this book to understand my heritage better and to connect with my ancestors. I have both German and British ancestry. When I first bought the book (paperback) I was surprised to learn that most Saxons stayed in Saxony (today's NW Germany) but basically all the Anglos and Jutes deserted their German homelands for Great Britain.
Sass offers proof of that by quoting old texts from the Continent and the Island itself. He ties it all in together very nicely. He dispels a lot of misinformation and now a lot of things make more sense.
There are similarities between the Continental Saxons and the Insular Anglos. There are also a lot of significant differences as well. I truly felt more confident in both sides of my ancestry as through this book, I'm able to reconcile and understand why this phenomenon is. Because of that, I have a clearer picture of where my path is headed. Don't get me wrong, I haven't got it all figured out yet, there are still a lot of ground I must cover, but now -- I've got a better footing and I have direction. I know where to look.
Anyone who is interested in living an authentic path of our ancestors will do good by buying this book. I carry it with me all the time, which is why I bought the Kindle Version too. It goes everywhere I go, on my phone. Anytime I want to look something up or have a little bit of free time, I come back to this book. The old ancient path isn't new-agey and it isn't Wiccanesque. It's a starting point. Here you'll learn the calendar, the cosmology and the mythological cycle of the Western Teutons.
I highly recommend this book, but don't stop here. It's the starting point. Anything else Robert Says writes, I'm going to get. He's the real deal.
I liked it. It proposes some interesting points concerning the history of the Saxon people and an attempt at reconstructing a Saxon heathenism.
The question of how Saxon the “Anglo-Saxons” in Britain were is, in my point of view, still difficult to answer - but the writer makes a compelling argument for his opinion.
