“Fallout” is a post-apocalyptic story that left me thinking and then rethinking again. Set in space where humans settle after the earth becomes uninhabitable, a virus is released changing their way of life. My favorite character, Priya is alone and brutally attacked. Her strength and relationships with the other characters had me rooting for her, and I loved the pet she acquired. Told through several POVs, the reader gets a full picture of a complicated situation that I enjoyed. The characters are flawed and realistic. It surprised me how many times there was a new twist I wasn’t expecting. This is a glimpse into the human condition where power, lies, and manipulation have taken over society. Ms. Kent skillfully gives us a dark peek into a possible future in the hands of a cruel leader. This is a great science fiction read that I recommend.

Fallout by Harmony Kent is a bleak, turbulent and fascinating post-apocalyptic Sci Fi novel revolving around the themes of power, deception and corruption. Whilst some of the Sci Fi elements didn’t resonate with me (this is a personal preference however), the entire novel is a brilliant read from start to finish.

The introduction sets the book up well: a dangerous world filled with disease, infection, ruin, blood-thirsty gangs, violence, soldiers, and roaming creatures. I felt for Priya, the first main character, as she tried to navigate this dangerous world, and the development between her and Kaleb was really enjoyable. I read with delight as his influence brought her power and understanding, a far cry from how we first encountered her at the start. I also liked how we moved to Sasha and her story, watching her work as a master manipulator and her own quest for power and dominance. In the centre is the struggle are the vials, powerful biological weapons that can wipe out vast populations or save them from the terror in which they live. The book was expertly crafted by the author to bring all of this together, and I felt that we spent suitable time with each so as to really understand them, whilst remembering where we left the other person’s story. I loved the juxtaposition of how one of them is at the bottom rung of power and the other is at the top, and yet each has their own battles to face if they are going to survive this harsh world.

A few minor negatives. I felt a little lost in terms of the context around this world at the start (which is cleared up later on). Kent has done a marvellous job of world-building, but sometimes I found myself lacking some important details. I would have liked some more description about where we were and what the raptors, for example, looked like. I also would have preferred it to be set on earth, but this is my personal preference and does not affect how much I enjoyed this book.

In short, this is a brilliant read. It was the sort of book I found myself reading in the early hours of the morning and late at night. Sci Fi fan or not, everyone should read this book.

I don’t read too many post-apocalyptic novels, but the blurb on this one caught my attention. These three lines made me buy the book and look forward to reading it. “A crazy, despotic president releases a nano-virus on the population. No one was ready for the fallout. It came anyway. In this post-apocalyptic world, can you stay safe?”

My good faith gamble on the blurb paid off by an excellent plot and exciting story. I’m not going to relay the full scenario here but would instead focus on my overall impressions. The book takes place on the planet Exxon 1. There is one guy in charge, and for reasons, we’ll find out later he decides to take out the planet inhabitants with a virus.

The cure for the virus is on its way to the president when the vehicle carrying it crashes. A qualified special trooper with orders to find it arrives on the scene. He finds instead a girl named Pryia who has been raped and beaten and left for dead. The remainder of the book deals with Pryia experiencing the highs and lows of the human condition. What makes this main character unique is all the implants that most of the planet inhabitants rely upon for managing everyday life are missing. She is totally on her own in an environment where no one can be trusted, and instinct alone can be the difference between life and death.

If you like a story that rewards the reader with a well-conceived and tightly wound plot set in a way that keeps you on the edge of your seat, this is one you will like. The action takes place in the future, but through the skill of the author, the reader comes to feel comfortable that the future is very much like today. In other words, the reader does not have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy this book. I enjoyed Fallout by Harmony Kent very much.

This is a long book, but the pace is ripping fast and the story flew by. A thousand years in the future, a virus ravages the human population inhabiting the planet Exxon II. What’s left is a lawless world where survival is precarious, infection threatens, and aspects of technology don’t function as they used to. There’s also a cure contained in a lost vial. This becomes the driver of the story as various parties are out to find it and use it to increase their political power and control.

The plot is complex and the world-building fascinating with technology that seems realistic on one hand while it stretches boundaries on the other. The virus, for example, can induce various superpowers in the infected, and serums are capable of imparting knowledge. There are political factions and lots of maneuvering, crosses and double-crosses and, dare I say, triple-crosses. Things move so fast, it’s important to pay attention.

Many of the characters are self-serving and devious to the point of sociopathic, so readers are wise not to take them at their word. Sexual violence and sexual manipulation are prevalent among these characters. Though a few repent and try to turn their lives around, I never found them likeable based on their past choices. The exceptions are Priya and Kaleb. Though the main character Priya begins the story as naïve and helpless, her arc rapidly progresses, transforming her into a woman of power who never surrenders her innate goodness. Kaleb is a tragic figure, and he’s the one that pulled on my heart strings.

Readers who enjoy a deep dive into post-apocalyptic science fiction with a complex plot and a flawed cast will find Fallout a fast-paced and polished read. Enjoy.

Fallout by Harmony Kent is a dark, gritty, twisted apocalyptic story guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat. Exxon 1 has been devastated by a virus, the planet an inhospitable environment where no one can be trusted, especially the planet’s president who is responsible for the outbreak. While people succumb to the virus and others struggle to resist, a vial containing a potential cure becomes the focus of ruthless individuals.

Pryia, a young woman who finds out just how savage her devastated planet can be, becomes entangled in getting the vial into the right hands. But who can be trusted? In the world Kent has created, her multi-layered characters are far from black and white. No one is who they seem, each driven by dark histories and darker goals, each a study in duplicity. There are crosses and double crosses, noble characters who sink to corruption and corrupt characters who discover a sliver of conscience when the clock is ticking to zero hour.

The world building is exceptional, the plot complex but fast paced. This isn’t simply a book about rebuilding a decimated planet, but a story that takes a raw look at human nature. Finally, I loved the full circle arc of the opening scenes gelling so perfectly with the close. A wholly satisfying and riveting read. Highly recommended!

I received an ARC of this book prior to publication.

Fallout is a dystopian novel which reflects a future world where technology has become such an integral part of society and human life that people rely on implants to advise them on every aspect of their daily life from judging human nature to security to undertaking work tasks. People work and live in zones together with others who have similar jobs, lifestyles and capabilities to their own.

When a disruption, on the form of a virus, impacts on the smooth routine of peoples lives, they find themselves struggling to pick up the pieces without the continuous flow of information from their implants. Only those who can get their wits together quickly can survive in the new lawless society. In addition, avoidance of contamination by the virus is also a necessary requirement for survival and that makes life even more complex, especially for the unwary who are conditioned by their past lifestyles.

We first meet Priya wondering around an unknown zone, having fled her own when it becomes impossible for her to continue to live in her apartment in the aftermath of the societal breakdown caused by the virus. Priya falls prey to an unscrupulous band of infected men who violently abuse her and leave her for dead. She is found by a member of the ruling political party's military personal who is on a quest to find an antidote to the virus. Despite his reservations, Kaleb is compelled to save Priya and, by doing so, changes the course of his life and the search he is conducting. The antidote is believed to have been in the possession of a female scientist, on the wife of the second in command to the president, when her helipad exploded, purportedly killing her and losing the only vial containing the antidote at the same time.

On Exxon 1, the planet where the virus is raging out of control, nothing is as it seems as the power hungry and malevolent president seems to have plans of his own which none of his leadership are aware of.

I enjoyed Priya's journey from a naive and ill informed woman with no survival skills into a strong woman with great empathy and excellent leadership skills. Kaleb is a dark and brooding character with a painful background and a lot of inner turmoil. His path in the book is not an easy one and is heart rending to watch unfurl.

The other supporting characters in the book are well described and interesting. The growth in the female characters makes for compelling reading as they evolve into mature women, capable over overcoming their past hurts and moving forward into leadership roles.

The fast pace does not slow for a moment and the reader is riveted by the action, subterfuge and often ill advised actions of many of the characters who have suffered at the hands of the government and administration.

I would certainly recommend this book for lovers of dystopia and science fiction with strong female role models.

The Title Says it All; There’s Fallout!

I’ve been in sci-fi mode recently, and Fallout caught my attention. I’ve enjoyed other works by this author and was eager to give this story a try.

This story reminded me of a space-version of The Casual Vacancy—political power is up for grabs and everyone is keeping secrets. The duplicity is multi-layered and deliciously dark. Every time I thought someone had hit rock bottom, I was surprised to find another twist.

Exxon 1 is part futuristic, part dystopian, and all fascinating. The author created a world of advanced technology, tragic consequences, and complex subterfuge that kept me wondering until the very end.

If you like dark, dangerous, and a little bit demented, this is the novel for you.

Imagine yourself in the post-apocalyptic future after your world has been devastated by a virus. Add to that you’re in a place where no one can be trusted.

That’s what happens to Pryia, the MC in Fallout. Harmony Kent has done an excellent job at world-building and in creating multi-faceted characters where no one is as they seem. The plot is fast-paced, guaranteed to keep you on your seat and guessing until the end.

Fall out is a science- fiction, post-apocalyptic, gritty/dark thriller set in the year 3040 where no one can be trusted. Meet Priya, the main character, who is a survivor and who is someone that does not give up despite the circumstances she is facing. After barely surviving a brutal and violent attack, she is saved by Kaleb, who nurses her back to health. She and Kaleb team up to increase their chances of surviving the brutal world filled with diseases, creatures, viruses, gangs, a lack of food and compete uncertainty. As the story unfolds, we find out that Kaleb is trying to redeem his dark past and is actually on a mission from the army to recover a vile that hold the cure for a virus that is devastating the planet. Then Sasha is introduced. She will stop at nothing on her quest for power and the reader is quickly thrust into the other part of the story that brings more clues to the totality of the book. I’m not going to provide any spoilers, but I will say that the characters are well developed, relatable, very realistic, flawed and believable. The story moves at a fast pace and the twists are unpredictable and well thought out. The dark motivations of several of the characters really stood out and was done quite well. The author obviously put in a great deal of time, thought, and effort into this novel and it shows! It’s a complex story; but it is broken down methodically and the multiple storylines merge seamlessly. I always looked forward to picking up the book again to see how the story would unfold and found myself rooting for Priya, who I really connected with throughout the story. All in all, this is a book I would highly recommend to everyone. It has all the elements of a well written, fast-paced, intriguing, and memorable novel. I’m looking forward to reading more books by this author.

Fallout is a fast-paced dystopic sci-fi adventure that follows a host of characters that form the circle of a conspiracy behind the Exxon planet's sudden viral outbreak. The book's main heroine Priyah must navigate the murky political waters to find the right allies to help her distribute a cure. But with monsters coming in all forms, she has her work cut out for her.

Overall, Fallout has some really great elements, as well as some cons.

Pros: Epic and expansive world-building. Kent created a universe with a lot to offer from high technology to space creatures, and she could very easily place many more entertaining stories in the realm. However, don't expect to delve too far into the sci-fi elements, in Fallout, Kent places a lot of focus on the characters and their development. It's one of the strengths of the story, as the characters are all nuanced, and their character arcs add a lot of intrigues. However, it did leave me wishing to explore the Exxon planets more.

Cons: This story has a lot of mature sexual content. For some people that might be a plus, but I tend to prefer cleaner stories. I'm not rating it down because of that though, as I know that goes to the reader's preference. A second con is the story's pacing. It does suffer a bit from some inexplicable time jumps in the beginning. In the same way, I found some of the character's rapid mood swings a bit inexplicable, however, sometimes the book would sort of catch up to itself. For me, the pacing was the biggest issue.

Gritty and fast paced

There are spoilers in this review so proceed at your own peril.

Fallout is a novel which seems to thrill in its bleak and gritty grimness. In the first chapter--almost on the very first page, in fact--the main character is violently gang-raped and left for dead. I'll be completely honest, this nearly put me off the entire book. It felt a little gratuitous. I felt like we easily could have started from Kaleb's section without losing anything from the story.
Nor is it an isolated incident. There seems to be a lot of violence and sexual violence against women in this story. However, I understand that this is a personal preference, so I haven't marked it down for that. The book also implies that the women of the novel grow strong *because* of the violence against them though, and that did leave a sour taste in my mouth.

Having said that, the world was well drawn, the writing was clear, consistent and fairly strong throughout and the action was fast paced. It was well thought out and the characters were believable.

I didn't want to mark this book poorly just because it was not for me. If you are someone who is not put off by "gritty" books, it may well be the book for you instead. If you enjoy dystopian space thrillers, why not give it a try?

What a dark, post-apocalyptic world! Fallout is a well-crafted story by a writer with obvious talent. I need to be honest, though, in that I had some trouble getting past some of the content (the brutal rapes and sexual violence were particularly disturbing). However, there is so much more to this tale than simply that and I am very glad I continued reading to the end. The author has everything going down for a reason and a satisfying resolution does come. Ms. Kent's description of the world, the dust storms and the infected were vivid and believable. This story would be good for people who like reading about the darker side of human nature, but also that there can be hope and light after even the darkest moments.

Let me start off by saying the writing is strong and the premise is super interesting. However, I personally would have benefitted greatly from a TW for SA. More than one graphic depiction of rape, one of which bordered on glorification. Also dubious consent and just overall really unpleasant sexual content. To be clear, I read dark stuff (love Irvine Welsh) and I read and enjoy erotica. This just lands in the uncanny valley between the two and as it was advertised as straight scifi I was left feeling conflicted and it pulled me out of the story quite a bit.

That aside, the writing is strong and the premise is interesting, so I would recommend it but with the caveat that there is some truly unpleasant stuff and it's written in such a way that it just doesn't hit quite right.

A year ago I purchased Fallout, but I only began reading it this week. I'm stunned. The story grabs and drags the reader down the back alleys of powerful, destructive people. Through unforgettable characters, readers experience a world controlled by fear--instilled by power-hungry demagogues. For a futuristic novel, this one is eerily current, replete with threats from an unknown virus and implants that control the people's lives. Kent is a strong and effective writer. She is someone we all need to pay attention to, especially now.

A gritty GrimDark story that I enjoyed.

This story is dark but well written. The characters are brought alive.
That said, there are many instances of rape and sexual violence. My biggest problem with this book was the jumping back and forth in time. It made the story feel disjointed and at times difficult to follow. I don't mind time jumps if there is a reason but in this book I found none. If it had been told in chronological order I would have given it 5 stars not 4

"Fallout" is an engaging post-apocalyptic story that kept me engaged with and thinking about the subjects covered long after I finished it.

The story is set in an uncommon environment: a space colony where humanity seeks refuge after Earth gets hit by a virus that is fatal. Priya, one of the main characters, overcomes unbelievable obstacles, and her tenacity and the bonds she creates with others struck resonate deeply with me. The addition of her adorable cat to the story is an added bonus. The novel unveils a full and intricate picture of the complicated circumstances from several points of view, which I found very interesting.

"Fallout" offers a thought-provoking exploration of the human condition, with themes of power, deceit, and manipulation influencing society. Susan Kent develops a grim vision of a possible future under the control of a merciless leader.

This is a superb science fiction read that I wholeheartedly recommend to science fiction aficionados.
