When Klytos, a Stormcast Eternal troubled by his fading memories, finds a chance to restore them, he seizes it… but the cost may be too much for him to bear.
READ IT BECAUSE Dale Lucas' Black Library debut takes a nuanced look at how Stormcasts view the consequences of reforging and what they might do to reverse the effects.
THE STORY Klytos, Liberator of the Celestial Vindicators, has died many times. Reforged each time upon the Anvil of Apotheosis and returned to his brothers to fight again in the name of Sigmar, death holds no fear for him… save one. With each reforging, more of his past ebbs away. Names and faces of those he once loved. Memories of the deeds he committed. Each death robs him of this and more. When a chance encounter with an agent of the Darkling Covens offers him a chance to restore his fractured memories, Klytos seizes it… but at what cost?
Klytos is a Liberator of the Celestial Vindicators, bound by brotherhood and duty, his Stormhost tasked with protecting refugees fleeing through Shyish from the predations of rampaging Khornate hordes. Before each battle he holds tight to his few remaining memories from his first life, and when an unlikely alliance offers the opportunity to reclaim his memories in full he can’t help but put himself first for once.
The subject of Stormcasts’ memories has been covered lots before, but Lucas takes an interesting approach by giving Klytos both an unusual and potentially damning choice, and an ongoing dilemma which plays upon his faith and sense of self. It’s an engaging read, emphasising the human side of the Stormcast.
This was my first read of a Warhammer story and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. It seemed as though Lucas truly stayed true to the characters while giving them a certain edge and developing a story that could appeal to fans of all genres alike. Looking forward to the next one!
Hey, this was pretty good. It offers a Stormcast perspective that is alluded to frequently, but rarely explored to this degree or direction - and in a way illustrates yet another of the creative ways an author can expand on the effects of reforging on an Eternal. I recommend it.
