Chase Connor spends his days writing about the people who live (loudly and rent-free) in his head when he’s not busy being enthusiastic about naps and Pad Thai. Chase started his writing career as a confused gay teen looking for an escape from reality. Ten years later, one of the books he wrote during those years, Just A Dumb Surfer Dude: A Gay Coming-of-Age Tale, was published independently. Chase has numerous projects in various stages of completion lined up for publishing. Chase is a multi-genre author, but always with a healthy dollop of gay.

An excellent start to the Point Worth series. Jacob Michaels returns to his hometown a decade after running away to pursue fame and fortune. He became rich and famous, but unhealthy habits and a relentless work schedule has worn him to the bone. Perhaps instinctively, and definitely out of necessity (he's literally wasting away and suffering exhaustion) he heads back to Point Worth to make amends with his grandmother. Henceforth, this paranormal romance story starts.

Without giving the good stuff away, there is humorous banter, potential love interests thrust upon Rob (Jacob Michael’s real name) as he remains uncertain about his future and tries to stay incognito, and a foreboding sense that something isn’t quite right, which is subtly woven into the plot (a great choice there, that helps to achieve such a surprising ending.)

I really liked Rob Wagner, a nice guy, aware of the mistakes he’s made and willing to hold up his hands under the understandable wrath of his grandmother, Oma. Not that it makes his time back home any easier. Oma, straight talking and irascible, does not suffer fools (and disappearing grandsons) lightly! Their reunion after two years is filled with much contention, but it’s mostly well meant banter and never becomes malicious even when it boils over into raised arguments. As crotchety as she is, Oma is hilarious. Multiple times I laughed out loud at her sharp snipes and retorts. My favourites:

“They’re all butt ugly. Hair the color of a baboon’s ass. I’m telling you. If ugly was a crime, they’d all be on Death Row.”
“I’m old. Old people are folksy,” she snarled. “F*** off.”
“Of course, they’re open at seven-thirty, Robbie,” she snorted. “This is Point Worth, not Europe where no one gets out of bed before ten in the goddamn morning.”

Chase Connor is a competent storyteller who gives you succinct sentences, engaging internal monologue and sharp, natural dialogue. He realises his characters well and makes you feel like you’re living the story through their eyes. You can’t help but be drawn into their world.

At around 230 pages, Jacob Michaels Is Tired is a nice length for an episodic tale. And like the start of a good serial, it burns slowly, introducing you to its world and characters before hitting a crescendo that makes you desperate to find out what happens next. I’ll definitely be reading the next book. Great stuff.

Different

Chase,
A Surplus of Light (loved it) and Jacob Michaels are very different and very interesting books. Your writing is strong and your characters are intriguing...especially Ian Chambers, who I am obsessed with. I never knew you existed until yesterday, and I plan to read more of your books.

However, get an editor!!! It's so distracting to a reader when a word is left out or used incorrectly. It cheapens the reading experience and leaves us wondering why no one bothered to proofread!

Finally! I’ve been waiting for a MC to react appropriately (at least in a paranormal/shifter situation) to his surroundings - in this case, a date who turns into a werewolf. So many times they just shrug it off as ‘odd’ and move on. Was the Rob/Lucas encounter once they got home what I expected? Maybe not, but I’m thinking there’s more to it as the story continues in the next book in the series. Looking forward to seeing what happens.

3.5 stars maybe?

I’m kinda at a loss of how to rate this because it’s a bit of a genre mashup and it’s a little confusing at this point. First there’s a celebrity. Then there’s his really ornery grandmother. Then all of a sudden there’s werewolves. Say whaaa...? I’m going to try the sequel only because it’s intriguing enough. My only hope is it’s not too confusing 🤞

Well this was an interesting read. I definitely want to read more by this author, even though I for sure am done with this particular series. He's got that intangible thing that actually makes me feel like I'm inhabiting a world and not just reading words on a page. But this is one of those silly/fun knock-a-bunch-of-installments-out-quick type of paranormals that almost never work for me. I will definitely be trying one of his more grounded full-length novels, though.

As a reader, I know no book is read in a vacuum - or maybe some perfect room where your stress and worries automatically turn off, your favourite cup of tea/coffee is always warm and full and your armchair/bed/nook is extra fluffy and lets you focus all your attention on that magical moment where you open a portal into a different world and become a part of it.

As an (aspiring) author? I simply wish it was.

Reading books have become routine. And unless (and sometimes not even then) the book is breath-taking and completely sucks me in, it's also interwoven with my life. And choices.

This book was found for free. As an omnibus.

Picked up? Because I was waiting. I was waiting on my me-early-present that was supposed to arrive and basically needed to "kill" some time without going crazy from the anticipation.

Right now? I am enjoying my present. A TV, get your mind off the gutter, people. And gaming. Pretty hard.

And this series has, in this case, become the backdrop and a little change into all that.

So is this book (and series good)? Right, now, the most honest answer would be: "I am kind of enjoying reading it in those few instances when I feel I should take a break from button-mashing".

To make this into an actual... well, something resembling review?

I was seriously debating sacking the book in that first chapter (not interested in a rich famous guy with bad habits and depression) but it got better, it was different, I didn't even mind all the cussing and "fake" fighting (which is actually a big compliment) and while I immediately though it was not too predictable overall.

Basically, you have these two plot lines and one is the fact Rob is trying to find himself (and his past) and the second is the romance that starts nicely and gets into a fated-mate thing but not obnoxious kind and everything would be pretty easy if only the old sweet lady opened her mouth but the point of this is to be held in suspense, so...

You do have some minor blemishes and let's say certain characters get pretty absurd - I like my adversaries as brilliant and interesting as my main characters but right now, I am feeling pretty charitable and for the aforementioned purposes (you can translate into your own life), this is a nice, paranormal, won't offend rommance series.

Recommend.

The title of this one doesn’t lie. Jacob Michaels Is Tired, and we can feel it. Furthermore, we empathize. Within pages, Connor helps us find the grace and sweetness in a main character we initially might want to roll our eyes at. In clumsier hands, we’d be less apt to empathize with a rich, spoiled, ultra-hot literal goddamn movie star. Luckily, the author’s got the chops to give us a complex, imperfect, ultimately loveable hero.

Don’t fret that he’ll be let off the hook easily, though. Jacob’s grandmother is poised and eager to put the boy in his place. He’s got it coming and it’s a lot of fun watching the pair come to a sorta understanding. Jacob knows he’s been a shit, and Oma knows she’s a feisty old crank. Their dynamic is the highlight of this series opener. Smartly, Connor gives us a chance to ground ourselves in an earthly emotional reality by using a good chunk of the narrative to give us the shape and scale of Jacob and Oma’s relationship.

The budding romance (We hope!) and supernatural elements feel like gravy, and we’re given just enough to make us want to charge into book two and see what the hell is going on in Point Worth and just what is going to happen with Jacob’s love life.

And Oma. Of course.

Just awesome, sweet, slow burn, character driven paranormal romance that is effortlessly good. Going to curl up with the whole series and just wallow in it.

Started slow but built up

The majority of the book felt almost like an introduction until the action started, but when it started it exploded! I will definitely read the next book!

Blood isn’t sexy.

Like. They’re not even vampires (that we know of) and they just started ripping off each other’s cloths even though one of them was just COVERED in blood??? I’m sure that’s someone’s kink. I don’t get it though.

The story started off okay, but then it just got really bad? This is a story about a Hollywood star who returns home to a small, little town to stay with his grandmother. He’s worn out by the Hollywood life and the life hasn’t been treating him well.

I thought Rob’s bickering with his foul-mouthed grandmother was hilarious but it did drag on a bit too long without much anything happening. There are werewolves in the story but not until the VERY end.

And Rob’s grandmother has been gaslighting him this entire time because he thinks he seeing and hearing things and thinks it’s a side effect of not taking his antidepressant.

Then there’s also the fact that the one POC in this book is the most racist character in this book (a black man)??? I don’t even understand why this is when all the other characters are white.

TWs for depression and racism.

The disappointment is real my friends!!

So many things in this book just FRUSTRATED me so much. I can’t bring myself to give it more than two stars.

The Frustrations
- The grandmother is rude with a capital R.
- Rob drives home drunk and it turns out drunk driving in books is a pet peeve for me.
- The main romance ( it was obvious who he’d end up with) was cute and seemed almost slow burn... until that ending, THAT REALLY ANNOYED ME. Not just because, it ruined my slow burn dreams but WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT.
- I’m not kidding what was that????
- Also Lucas no you don’t just kiss someone when they’re hysterical.

So this book clearly wasn’t for me, in my humble opinion it sucked.

idk how I finished it. story kept on dragging with no progress in plot. the only not-bad thing was unhinged dialogues of granny (who's a *spoiler alert*) and the well written hungry *gay* sex scene at the end!

I love all other books by Chase and I finished it for him. but I ain't coming near this series again. sorry Chase.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would when I started reading. First thing you should know - it's not really about Jacob Michaels, which is the stage name for Robbie Wagner. Jacob is probably doing great - but Robbie is exhausted, and decides to hop off the celebrity train he's been riding constantly for the last 10 years. He ends up in his grandmother's house in the-middle-of-nowhere/Ohio - and falls into a mystery that is more back-burner than front. There is weird stuff going on in Point Worth - but Robbie is just too tired to notice. (We aren't, though. Astute readers will probably figure out what's going on well before Robbie, who proves the rule about an untrustworthy narrator.)

What dropped this book down to a four-star instead of five was mostly due to editing. The prose and storyline could have been tighter, and I would have liked to see the mystery-elements of the story accentuated. It also was physically tricky to read - the lines of my Kindle-Unlimited copy are double-spaced, with no indents on paragraphs and also no extra lines between paragraphs, so sometimes it was really hard to tell when paragraphs ended and began - problematic, in sections that featured large blocks of dialog where the speaker changes frequently.

However, the story did end in a good spot that makes me want to continue reading, and I'm looking forward to the next in the series.

I didn’t need to sleep, honestly

This book grabbed me by the throat (hah!) from the get-go, with a deceptively low-key but addictive start. I resented anything (work, kids) that took me off it. and stayed up way too late to finish it.
Rob Wagner, burned out Hollywood A-Lister but wonderfully human, returns to his Ohio hometown after ten years, for some R&R normality with his potty-mouthed Oma. For someone who’s so rich his grandchildren need never work, he’s strangely loveable and compelling.
Turns out things are waaay further from normality than he’s ever conceived of. This aspect of
The story is brilliantly foreshadowed until it’s suddenly there in your face, well, smeared all over it. And, y’know, all over your clothes and windshield and stuff.

This book was deceptively slow burn til about two thirds of the way through. I’m used to this author smiting his characters with exquisite psychic pain, and this time he caught me with a curveball out of(deep) left field. No spoilers, but am I reading the whole series? You bet I am.

The premise of the book seemed like a good one, the cover and title indicates it will have some silliness and I was looking forward to finally trying out the series.
If I had a penny for every time we were told Jacob is thin in this series, I would be a rich person, I'm not sure I understood just how malnourished he actually was.

I liked the set up for the mystery, because there is something strange going on in the town and with most of the people, the author is keeping it close to their chest but I'm sure we will learn more in the next book.
The thing between Jacob and Lucas seemed a bit too much like insta-love, which seemed strange but then again I'm sure it will be revealed.

I had hoped it was gonna be more funny than it was, the banter was more strange than fun.

FCC!!! I should have known there would be a gigantic build up and then a cliffhanger. Because Chase Connor is so good at the slow burn, then igniting the flame to trigger the explosion.

I liked Rob from the start. He was respectably himself all of the time, which was a mixture of friendly, down to earth, genuine and a bit direct at times. But, growing up with a firecracker like Oma, he'd obviously learned to fight for himself.

The story was quick moving, intriguing and funny. I loved it and I'm moving on to book 2, excited to find answers to the mystery I was left with.

I do like Connor's slow-reveal writing style, though I wanted a *little* more reveal in this one. I get that it's the first installment, but I felt like I didn't know anymore at the end than I did at the beginning, and there were a lot of teasers. It piqued my interest, though, so that's a positive. Some of the characters (like grandma) were a little obscure, and I wanted to know them a little better. All in all, it was intriguing but not outstanding.

Hilarious in all its foul mouthed glory. The story is mostly Jacob Michaels Re: Robert Wagner, getting told off by his grandmother after retreating from stardom back to the country home of his childhood. There's Lucas, the shy boy. Andrew, the insufferable wolf. Carlita, the drag godmother. Funny, and after a slow build, an explosion of sexy.

I loved this book!! It kept me interested from start to finish. I couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting. I loved the characters, and was in suspense all the way through. What a satisfying turn of events at the end! It left me hanging, however, and now I want the second book to find out what happens next, lol! Great job, Chase! I'm a fan! (as if I wasn't already) ;)

Too Short

It's a fun enough book to read and has a smack of early Nora Roberts romance about it, only with a slightly raunchier payoff.

The characters of Rob, Oma and Lucas are interesting, but never get chance to fully develop.

This is a quarter of the book it needs to be; it leaves you unsatisfied rather than wanting more.

A fun romp

Chase Connors first book in the "Point Worth" series is a fun set up for the series. I can't wait to read the rest. Robbie, Lucas and Oma are all fun characters and set a scene of can possibly be a world full of colorful people that could go on forever if handled right. I highly recommend this book.

Amazing!

Such an amazing story. It’s been quite some time that I was able to pick up a book, and fall in love with it as quickly as I did with this one.

Such beautiful characters in this novel, that you will hate, and love all at the same time!

3.75 - new to me author. Interesting paranormal read. It ends abruptly so if you like this book you have to read book 2 for any kind of answers. The lower rating is for that and the fact oma is an abusive yucky character. I think it was meant to be funny but it didn’t work that way for me.

I really like Chase Connor’s books. The stories are fresh and the characters interesting. In this book I absolutely love Robbie’s “Oma”, the crotchety grandmother.

On the downside, the level of sex scene detail detracts from the quality of the story.
