Cursed Academy #2

Cursed Academy: Year One and a Half

Rate this book
Figures Giselle would turn out to be the child of literal Chaos.

As a budding immortal who could mold into anything, staying in Cursed Academy doesn't bode well. She'll probably end up a goddess of disaster or tripping, according to her new boyfriend Ronin. But transferring to Olympian with Ronin means breaking an oath made by the gods on the River Styx--and the gods won't he happy. So long as Giselle bears Prometheus's mark, she stays at his school.

Worse, her arch nemesis Wendy's forming her own secret society to banish her to the Underworld. But fighting back means destroying Wendy with her uncontrollable powers, which will turn her into a dark goddess for sure.

Certain she'll get paired to fight Wendy during Combat Exams, there's just one way for Giselle to save herself: get Wendy expelled. And the only way to do that is to show Wendy's involved with the Lower Order, the terrorist cult who attacks the gods and wants to force Giselle into their ranks. That's hard when all Ronin wants is to keep her safe.

Can Giselle risk her friendships, her future, and possibly even Ronin's heart?

Cursed Academy: Year One and a Half is the second book in the Cursed Academy serie by Holly Hook.

It's a couple months after book 1 and we're at the second half of the first year at Cursed Academy.

I really like Giselle, Ronin, Maria and Mikey. I really like the story and as always really like the writing style. Can't wait for book 3!

I really love this series. This story picks up a few months after book 1. That might seem like much but the story continues without plotholes or (too much) repetition, it starts off very fluently, getting you back on track as to what happened and what needs to happen next. The perdicament in which the students from Cursed Academy are in, is more present in this book than in book 1. So this instalment feels a bit darker and you get the feeling that they’re on a timeclock or deadline. Which, in a way, they are, all of them. I love the development of the storyline, the ending was a bit logical and therefor not as surprising as the plottwist in book 1 but it is the most logical ending, given the events that you read about throughout the book so it didn’t diminish the fun of reading about it. And although the ending is a bit less of a surprise, it’s all in the details so since it is written well it’s definitely enjoyable nontheless. And there are some interesting details that make you wonder about what’s in store for the future for the students of both Cursed and Olympian Academy. So once again, great sequel and can’t wait for the next instalment!

It seems like everyone is putting out a series involving an academy of some sort these days. It makes sense considering how that whole series about Hogwarts went, after all. Lots of these involve Greek Gods, again a logical move considering how well (best sellers plus movies) Percy Jackson did. Some criticize this, but to me it’s no different then any other genre and all I care about is if it’s well done or not. Holly Hook’s new series, Cursed Academy, is definitely an example of how this can be done well. Yes, by its own description this is yet another “Supernatural Academy Romance” and, yes, it’s another academy series involving Greek mythology, but it is so (so) we’ll done. I totally adored it’s first two books, Cursed Academy (Year One), and Cursed Academy (Year One and a Half), love the imaginative twist here (the academy is not for descendants of the Olympian gods but rather of the “lesser” dark gods and the monsters from Greek mythology), love the klutzy feisty heroine here, Giselle, and all her clear potential and mystery (including those cool not understood powers) and the literally godly Ronin is pretty darn fantastic too. It’s gonna be fun watching Giselle (and Ronin) develop over the series. Add in superb writing, great plots filled with wonderful characters, and what looks to be a great overarching story arc in the making. The result is a fantastic new series that just happens to be - and make perfect use of - an academy setting. Totally fun, but for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. These two books and the series itself definitely deserve it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the books and series are most definitely easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

Giselle’s story continues as the second semester at Cursed Academy is under way. After they events of book one Ronan, her friends and she especially are afraid of what she might mature into if she remains at Cursed. Giselle has the potential to go dark or light. The Olympians wish her to be at their academy and to harness her power for the light. Prometheus wishes her to stay even though he is pressured to release his mark and free her from Cursed. He wants to use Giselle and her potential to bring recognition and equality to his school.
There is a good amount of teenage angst for Giselle as she feels trapped and at one point betrayed. There’s also a touch of lightheartedness when Giselle, Maria and Mikey impersonate the Scooby gang and try to catch Wendy (your classic mean girl) at something that will get her expelled. All in all a wonderfully developing story. Looking forward to seeing what year two brings.
I received an ARC from the author. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.

No wonder the first book was so short. This is the second part. It is not a short story, it is not a novella or a side story, it is the continuation of the first book and needs to be read in order to understand the official second book in the saga.

Giselle is not such a klutz anymore, which I approve. She is still stubborn and messes it up big time several times. Ronin is not as annoying and Wendy has a little more character development.

This book is better than the first. Yes, it is still slow-paced but at least we got the final exams to look forward to. I found that when there is a milestone in a story, I am better at waiting.

I am certain Prometheus is one of the bad guys, he is in cahoots with the Low Order. Why else he would not listen when Wendy told him something wrong would happen at a certain event? He was so adamant about protecting Giselle but this time he let himself get distracted. Yeah, sure.

And it seems like the next book has the same plot as this one. Not much going on in this saga, it feels like I'm still at the beginning.

Giselle is back for the second half of her first year at Cursed Academy. Wendy is still out to get Giselle. Maria and Mickey, Giselle's friends, are still doing their best to help Giselle get to Olympian Academy. Ronin is still trying to help Giselle to hide her powers from Promethius. The Lower Order is still out to get Giselle. Giselle is getting ready for final exams and will have to fight Wendy. She is afraid of possibly killing Wendy during her final exam and doesn't realize that Ronin is trying to help her and not going against her. She feels that Ronin has turned against her. There are a lot of twist and turns in this book that I did not expect.

I am very excited to read the 3rd book in this series. Once I started the first two books, I couldn't stop reading. I am really enjoying this series.

The second half of the school year turns up the heat for these characters, with many facing futures being evil monsters. This storyline keeps you constantly guessing the actual motivations of the Gods and Titans. The budding powers of the MC is becoming more and more fascinating! On to year two! The second book in this series was more enjoyable than the first. Having a world and characters already established was a huge part of what made this a better read. The plot, overall, also progressed better. It’s still fast paced and not very long. There were still a lot of cheesy moments, but that’s expected for a young adult kind of book. Overall, it’s nice for a lighter read.

This book picks up right where we left off in book one. Even more twists and surprises await in side the pages as Giselle struggles to discover how to escape the walls of Cursed Academy and just how she fits in with all the other descendants. One thing is certain, not everyone is what they seem....

Definitely better than the 1st book

The 1st book had some good qualities, but it also lacked things for me as well (especially the way the hero treated his lady). I'm glad I decided to read the 2nd book, because this series is definitely getting more interesting.

Monsters?

Descendents of the gods and goddesses attend either Olympia or Cursed Academy. Some of the first year students have not yet matured and don't know what their natures will be. Lots of action and twists keep you reading till the very end!

Terrible dialogue

I liked the premise but not much else.
The story line was disjointed and the dialogue and characters are terrible.
