The complicated history of the Saxton house has been long forgotten. Few in the town of Cypress Creek even remember the house and what had occurred inside its walls decades before. In the present time, author Rob Hooper and his wife, Janet, are looking for a quiet place to live. The grandiose, isolated Victorian-style relic is everything they could want. A mysterious, widowed owner offers them a deal that can’t be passed up. But they quickly discover that some things are too good to be true.
I love haunted house stories and I mostly enjoyed this one. I'm not sure about the setting. All that it says is Cypress Creek and being from Florida originally, I know there was a Cypress Creek in the county that I was from. I'd like to believe that it's the same place. Overall...it was an engaging, fun read, and I will likely read more by this author. The characters grow on you, and there was enough elements of mystery to keep me reading to the end. This story uses a haunting as a vehicle to solve a horrible crime, but the supernatural aspect is definitely secondary. Again, it is the vehicle and not the destination. I would have liked for it to be a bit more of what the book was based on...but that was a small thing. Most ghost stories get 5 stars and numerous plus signs in my ratings but in this one there are several inconsistencies with names and dates which was distracting for a novel that has mystery elements to which details are important. There were also numerous errors in punctuation and in language which probably was not entirely or at all, the fault of the author but certainly was the fault of the proof-reader. In spite of these things, the story flows along nicely, and the ending leaves a couple of unanswered questions that could easily result in a follow up book. It was for the most part an overall, hauntingly good story with a creepy old house.
While the story was a good one I found myself looking for more typos than paying attention to the book itself. The editing was poor and affected the entertainment value for me.
Where to begin? If ever there was a book that needed editing, FUCK, this is it. I get that people want to self publish, and I’m honestly all for it, but this was ridiculous. The story line had a decent skeleton, but the work wasn’t put into making this a good story, and that’s a shame.
Great book that you can stop reading and pick up at a later date and still remember what's going on
I love reading novels about horror, hauntings, psychological thrillers, paranormal ....you know the genre! There was a little bit of all of those in this book. Unfortunately, it just never came together for me. I was repeatedly jolted from the storyline by misspelled words, words that didn't belong ...etc This book is sorely in need of a good editor. Another issue that I had with this book, was being told how each person was feeling and reacting. I was never really able to connect with the characters. Huge holes in the storyline. (He can drive 3 hours away, yet not be able to cross the county line?) The ending felt very rushed and thrown together. There were a few parts that made me think "here we go,now the action is going to start " only to have a new chapter begin! I gave 3 stars, because it wasn't the worst story that I've ever read. It also was not the best that I've ever read. If you want a book that you can read on the plane, beach..etc and pick up right where you left off, this would be a great option.
Proofread and edit. I cannot stress this enough. Your story and your flow there, but sometimes you seemed to get lost in unnecessary details. It is also important to watch your timelines. Example: How did Walter have a child old enough to graduate high school if he'd graduated himself alongside the main character and went to college long enough to get sidelined by an injury. Granted, he could have impregnated his high school girlfriend who he married then or later, but it's left hanging.Your talent is obvious, just some housekeeping details need to be attended to.
I love this authors ability to tell a chilling tale. She’s quickly gained the status as a favorite of mine. Her stories are original and twisted. I do have one complaint to pass on, at times she slips into this recanting of previous chapters. We are reading the same book so there’s no need to recant previous chapters. I could see it if we were reading a continuation of the series but not in the same book. That’s the only complaint I have, otherwise she’s a great storyteller. It doesn’t keep me from enjoying the stories as this is the 4th I’ve read.
I loved the storyline and the characters, as they were both well presented. However, I felt the editing was poor, with many grammatical errors, including incomplete sentences, misspellings and incorrect tense, and this detracted from a good, quality book. I also felt there was too much review of what had occurred prior in the book. The length of the book wasn't long enough to keep reviewing last occurrences and actually would have been shorter without them. I really did enjoy the plot, and look forward to another book by Mr. Jayden with far better editing.
The Haunting of Saxton Mansion by Roger Haydenis an awesome mystery that I have had the chance to read and fall in love with. This is book number five in this awesome series that I can not get enough of. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about horror, suspense and mysteries as much as I do.

I just finished reading and I am all over the place on this one. I find Rob Hooper annoying for most of the story and he is damn lucky to be married to Janet. It felt like he was always pushing her to do what he wants and Janet being the sweet girl that she is just listens most of the time. He seemed selfish in everything he was doing and could work on his manners, too. The story was pretty good, if only the MC was someone better.
I enjoyed the the story. The predictably of the story line takes away some of my enjoyment of reading. I feel that the author's writing style makes the books last longer than they really need. I have been reading the books in order of publication and I hope the future books will offer some simplification of the writing style. I do enjoy the stories and I will continue to read the books.
It could have been a fantastic book if it weren’t for grammatical errors and inconsistency with dates. I got the feeling that it was written as a serial novel, as for about half the book many circumstances were re-addressed to the reader as a reminder. That said, it was an entertaining read which kept me interested enough to wrap it up in 3-4 days and keep me away from the telly for the duration.
Don't waste your time! I usually just rate a book I have read with stars, but I must say something about this book. From the beginning, I was really upset with glaring grammatical errors, repetition, ad infinitum, and even sentences that were confusing at best. I felt as if I were reading an unedited manuscript from a high school student. I would have given it 1 star, but I felt the story was pretty interesting, and I did manage to finish it, but then, I have never left anything, however bad, unfinished. This writer needs a good editor.
I enjoy a good horror, scary book and this is a delightful read. The story is entertaining and mysterious, it builds as the story goes on. This is my second book by this author and I immensely enjoy his writing. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I love a great mystery and an awesome haunting. This is definitely it!! I immediately took to the characters and was scared and surprised and happy with them all of the way through this book. I loved the ending!

While maybe not the most believable ghost story to date, it was certainly one that kept me up too late a couple of nights, as I just couldn’t put it down! It was very intriguing and detailed, and I loved the actual story line. It was definitely well-worth reading, and one I’d recommend to anyone wanting to get lost in just a really good book :)
I thoroughly enjoyed the book as a whole. The characters were engaging and the story captivating. Reading the kindle edition, however, entailed getting past some errors that proper editing would have eliminated. Those errors often jolted me from the escapism of the story.
This story is very unique and fantastic! The suspense and drama throughout the pages is perfect, and the character descriptions are superb! The editing does need some work, a lot of details changed throughout the story, and a lot of repeat throughout (similar to the recap of a television series) but still very much worth reading!
Yeah I had a really hard time putting this one down. Likeable and believable protagonists and some terrific supporting characters. A couple of minor typos but for the most part well written. When I can picture a scene in my head from a book that to me is great writing and storytelling. This one and Bechdel may be my two favorites in this series.
I would have rated this a little higher but the editing was pretty sad. There were many misspelled words, wrong words used in places and incomplete sentences which made it harder to read. I liked the story, the characters were well developed, but it could have used a better editor.
There was a slow start and quite a few typos , but once the story got going it was really interesting . I haven't read any of the others in the series , I always seem to read the last one first haha I'll definitely check them out though . Hopefully there's a sequel to this one , I want to know if Matheson was cleared
Another story I found I could not put down. Two days and over 500 pages done. Although, in my opinion, not as good of the last story, I must say it still has many twists and turns for ghost lovers. A very worthwhile story for a dark and stormy night read.
I absolutely love this book from the very beginning to the very end. It kept me reading and reading to the point where I didn't really want to put it down at all. I even read so late into the night the next thing I knew it was 5:00 a.m. and I had to get up in 2 hours. I'd recommend this book to anybody who loves a good ghost mystery.
Can wrong be righted? This is a gripping story of a vengeful house seeking justice. An unaware couple purchased an old mansion that had been the location of the murders of a family. Within a couple of weeks, strange occurrences began, mysteries evolved, desperation and despair filled the couple. What will they discover next?
I enjoyed this haunted house novel! The characters were solid and the story line was interesting. It had poor editing that distracted me at times and was a little predictable. I feel it was unnecessarily lengthy and by the time I got to the end I was ready to be done with it.
Overall, I did enjoy it but poor editing and unnecessary details tainted the story line for me.
This is actually a very good haunted house story. There are two reasons I didn't rate it 4 stars (or even 5). The main reason is the editing. Poor editing can really detract from my enjoyment of a novel. The second, and much less important reason, was the length. I feel the novel could have told the same story as effectively in 50-100 less pages.
Riveting story. Long repetitive description where cut down a bit, which was nice. Quite a bit of grammar issues... using her instead of him or his for instance. I'm horrible at grammar and things like that just threw me off a bit. But it's not stopping me from downloading the next book in the series.
I couldn't even finish the book it was that bad. Way too much extra crap thrown in the story. It's written like the author was getting paid by the word or had some type of word or page quota to meet in order to publish the novel. I highly do not recommend this novel nor any other novel by this author because this is the second sucky book by him I've attempted to read.
