"Where have all the good men gone?"
Single mom Emma Swenson desperately needed a new start -- so she escaped to small town Bayfield, Ontario, where her unhinged ex can't possibly find her.

With a four-year-old daughter to raise, the waitress doesn't have time to play games. But the same day Emma swears off men altogether, she meets temptation himself. Jack is tall enough to climb, built like an athlete, and maybe secretly rich. Even better? He's heart-meltingly good with kids.

But Emma knows to stay away from players with reputations for breaking hearts. Besides, what her daughter needs is a strong father figure ... not another "bad boy."

So why won't Jack take no for an answer? And who is he, really?

"They can have my body, but they'll never have my heart again."
Hockey star Jack Hathaway stunned the sports world when he walked out on a life of fame -- and never told a soul why. No one in the tranquil lake paradise of Bayfield knows about his hockey past. And that's just the way the former captain likes it.

But the latest girl to catch his eye isn't looking for a fling. A striking blonde with a troubled smile, Emma puts her adorable daughter first -- and the single mom won't let the secretive athlete into their lives unless he proves himself worthy.

Can the muscular millionaire with a broken heart learn to love again?
Comeback is a 53,000 word small town hockey romance. This standalone novel is the second book in the Dallas Devils series. Narrated in dual POV. No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA always guaranteed!

Guys, this was bad... like actually so bad. The plot was interesting but the execution was terrible. Insta-love to the max (declaring their love after ONE date), problems that magically vanish once said "love" is declared, attempted rape for the hell of it, and a stupid FMC to boot (she sees her cousin tied up, had just put her daughter down for bed, knows her ex has found her but "[she] was determined to be strong and not run from [her] problems, to face [her] fears" and enters the kitchen instead of taking her daughter and getting tf out of there).

In the beginning of their first date, Emma had very valid concerns about jumping headfirst into this life with Jack when he offered to run away with her and her daughter: Mack needs stability and a life on the run isn't suitable for a child. Extremely valid and plausible concerns... Also, this is the same first date where he tells her that she doesn't need to work anymore. But then that same night her ex shows up, but of course they're able to get him arrested and Jack's teammates show up and finally get the truth from him and all's well again and they can move in together because all of their problems have been solved: Emma won't be on the run anymore and Jack has a team waiting for his return. Cue my eyes rolling to the back of my head.

Then after that "awful night," everyone (and I mean everyone: Emma, Mack, Emma's cousin and her boyfriend, and Jack's 2 teammates) moves into Jack's manor for some fking reason. Emma and Jack get married at the courthouse a few weeks later before they left Bayfield (to prove his commitment to her and her daughter and pre-season was coming up so he needed to show he was all in, as if getting married so soon because there are external factors needing your commitment is a good reason to pull the trigger), Jack goes back to his hockey team who welcome him with open arms, to her best friend telling her to "pull out every trick in the book" because Jack's "slept with tons of girls" so she needs to "rock his fucking world" (this is near the end when they hadn't even slept together yet), and a touch of something that felt a little racist (one of Jack's new teammates from Russia can only speak one English sentence and it's "Me love score goals" and they all have a laugh about it)...

Overall, I regret reading this book and I cannot recommend it if you want something that makes even a modicum of sense. Also, these two definitely broke up after a few years. Once the novelty of the instant-family wore off, they’d be bored and become ships in the night before eventually divorcing. And still, I couldn’t care less about them.

It was good but yo, too fast! so many authors in this genre have great characters to work with but eventually end up pushing the story line (and believability) too fast in their series after a few books. it's so annoying, please cut this trend *insert sincere emoji face here*

This was an enjoyable read. I actually liked it better than the first book. In this one we have Emma and Jack. Both are trying to deal with some crazy stuff in life. However, when they meet they can't seem to stay away. After they both deal with their issues they get their HEA.

Just no. The timeline on this was completely ridiculous with major events happening within pages (and hours in the book).

I seem to be in the minority for this book as it had so many 4/5 star reviews but it was an absolute no for me.

Emma Swenson did not appreciate the cab driver who was recklessly speeding through the downpour of rain, the wipers unable to keep up with the storm. She had asked him already to slow down, but he ignored her. This time she told him that her daughter, Mackenzie, was terrified and she demanded he slow down! Mackenzie had been shaking with fear and sobbing on and off since the rough turbulence they encountered in the plane. When the lightning stopped, her daughter finally fell asleep for the rest of the drive to their new home in Bayfield.

After two months living with her cousin, Nicole, Emma was finally relaxing in her new life. Her father had been a mean drunk, so when she met Trevor when she was 17, she eagerly moved in with him to get away from her father’s abuse. Trevor became disapproving of her friends and family, so before long, she found herself isolated and alone, the mother of a little girl. Now that she was away from Trevor, her daughter was suffering with a social anxiety issue. She wouldn’t speak out loud if anyone was around and only spoke to her mother when they were alone.

Jack Hathaway, an ex-NHL player and captain of the Dallas Devils, spent the past two years in Bayfield hiding out from the public. He had purchased the lakefront property back when he was engaged to Megan. It was supposed to be a surprise gift to her. She never even knew he had bought it. Now he lived in it by himself, trying to fight off the painful memories of her betrayal with his best friend. Jack laced up his rollerblades, grabbed his stick and gloves, and whipped the puck from left to right as he coasted down my driveway.

Thirsty from his workout, Jack skated up to a food truck when he saw a lovely woman. When a little voice said, “Mommy, look! A hockey player!”, he noticed her child and began to talk to her. She didn’t verbally respond, so he asked her for a “low five” greeting, which she now enthusiastically provided since he had earned her trust by continuing to talk with her. He was interested in Emma until he spotted the ring Nicole had given her and which she put on her left hand to remind herself she wasn’t ready for a man. He assumed she was married, and he had no intention of getting involved with that.

Jack’s accountant, Brent, called him and told him the owner of the Dallas Devils fired everyone from the GM down to the coaching staff and now the public wanted Jack back in the game. People were looking for him, and Brent encouraged him to come out of hiding and get back into the game. He wasn’t interested in a comeback to hockey, but really needed someone to talk to. And his mind returned to the married woman and little girl he’d met. But when he went to her workplace, she was guarded with him. She went next door to have coffee with him, and he asked about her husband. He was surprised that the man was out of her life but not helping to support the child. Did no one have any loyalty? Then Nicole brought a crying Mackenzie to her at the cafe. Jack asked if Mack remembered him – and she said he was the hockey player! She gave him a “low five” and he told her their names rhymed. When Emma started to take her outside, she actually called Jack’s name!

This was an absolutely beautiful love story. The main characters were strong, yet broken. Both Jack and Emma wanted someone in their life to be real, honest, loyal, because they had not found that in their past relationship. Even Mackenzie wanted someone she could trust to love and care for her, and Jack drew her right in with his honest and straightforward accepting love. There was so much all three had to overcome in their own way. And the author beautifully handled the way their trust was established and grew into something much more. Would they be strong enough and healed enough to come together and be able to handle the things that would try to tear them apart? This book is so good that you will not want to miss it. It’s one of those that pulls the characters into the reader’s heart. You won’t forget this one.

i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the story of retired hockey player Jack and single mother Emma. Emma is a mother to Mackenzie and moves to the small town of Bayfield, Ontario from Toronto after she left her abusive ex. Emma's ex had been arrested for a DUI with Mackenzie in the car and threatened to take Mackenzie away from her, but the courts awarded custody to Emma. Emma moved in with her cousin and tried to move on, but Mackenzie was not speaking to anyone but her mother, so Emma took her to see a specialist. Emma was trying to save enough money to move out on her own, but she was only a waitress and it was hard to do. Jack had played hockey in Dallas until he learned his best friend and teammate, Soupy, was having an affair with his fiance. Jack learned this right before they were set to play in the Stanley Cup finals and he told Soupy he never wanted to see him again. Soupy left Jack's house and crashed his car, dying on impact. Jack couldn't face his team and he left without telling anyone where he was going. Now two years later, Jack is settled in Bayfield and he meets Emma one day while she was with Mackenzie. Mackenzie spoke to Jack, shocking Emma and when Emma realized she forgot her money, Jack offered to pay for their lunch. Emma told him to come to the restaurant where she worked the next day so she could pay him back, but when he got there, Emma's cousin showed up with Mackenzie and Mackenzie wanted to stay with Jack. Jack was attracted to Emma, but she was unsure about him because she heard he was a playboy and he refused to tell her much about himself. When Mackenzie continued to talk to Jack and he asked them to f spend time with him, she thought it would be good for Mackenzie. Emma liked Jack, but she didn't know much about him and she didn't know if she could trust him. Jack wanted to be with Emma, but he was scared to tell her about his past and he worried he would be found. i really liked this story. I liked Jack and thought he was so hurt in the past, but Emma seemed to make him want to move on. I think he was amazing with Mackenzie and he wanted to help her. Emma liked Jack, but after her past experiences, she was nervous about trusting him. I loved them together and i think they were great together. There was a little danger in this book and i think it was well done.

I'm not a fan of the cover, the story is much more serious than the cover implies. I am a huge fan of Jack. He's sweet, caring, protective, protective and generous, and great with kids. Emma is strong, determined, vulnerable and kind. When she ran from her ex, Emma went to her cousin's so that she, and her 4 y.o. daughter Mack, could start over. Emma was getting more frazzled and concerned every day, because Mack hadn't spoken to anyone but her since before they moved, and she was also suffering from severe separation anxiety. One night Emma gets home from work to find Mack crying, she had been crying all day, so she took her out to get dinner, and out of her cousin's hair. Jack was taking his usual trip around town in his roller blades and hockey stick when he sees Emma waiting in line at a food truck. Always up for a quick romp with a tourist he turns around and gets in line behind her planning to hit on her. Until he notices that she's not alone. When Mack notices Jack she points to him and says "look mommy, a hockey player". Emma is floored, Jack is smitten with her, and Emma. Emma gets embarrassed when Jack has to pay for her and Mack's food, but invites him to where she works so that she can buy him lunch. Back at home, Emma tells her cousin what happened, and Nicole filled her in on all the dirty gossip about him. But Emma doesn't care about that, she's not planning to date him, and he is the only person Mack will talk to. He's all in with Mack, playing with her and talking to her. The more she's around Jack, the more impressed she is with him. But he has secrets that he won't talk about, which causes trust issues, but Jack won't give up, because he's fallen for both Emma and Mack. He is so good with Mack, he's exactly what every single mom deserves in a man.

Sweet, romantic and endearing, Comeback is the story of Jack, a former pro hockey player who has experienced a lot of heartache in his life recently. He hasn’t been handling it well, hiding out in an isolated town and using sex to avoid feeling the pain that threatens to take over. When he meets Emma, a quiet single mom on the run from her abusive ex, Jack realizes that he’s finally found someone who can make him feel something other than pain. He pursues her even as she resists his flirtations. While he may not be totally upfront about his past, he is upfront about how he feels for her. They both have their own trust issues, but they see the potential for something great.

I enjoyed this quite a bit - the chemistry between the two is evident, they are both likeable characters (for the most part), it’s a sweet slow burn romance with some heat, and the addition of Emma’s daughter into the story is adorable. Jack’s recent behavior is a little gross, but he’s going through a dark period in his life so it’s somewhat forgiveable. It did feel like their feelings developed pretty quickly - one minute Emma is questioning Jack about what he’s hiding from her, and the next they’re in love - but there was plenty of character development so it didn’t feel like instalove. There is some suspense at the end of the book, and a situation that might be a trigger for some, but it helped wrap up the story nicely. Overall, it’s a fast-paced, cute book that’s definitely worth a read.

Jack is a former NHL hockey player and captain of the Dallas Devils who was betrayed by the two people he trusted the most. Jack flees to a small town where no one knows who he is and uses woman and sex to escape the pain caused by his ex-fiance and best friend. Emma is a single mom who waitresses to support herself and her daughter while living with her cousin after fleeing her abusive ex. Emma is worried about her daughter, Mack, who only speaks to Emma and suffers from severe separation issues. Jack spots Emma one afternoon and his interest is peaked. Emma is stunned when Mack speaks to Jack. Jack finds that he is intrigued by Emma and Mack. Emma and Jack are attracted to each other, and the chemistry is smoking hot. Emma's cousin warns her about the gossip around town about Jack. Emma tries to resist Jack's pursuit, but Jack won't take no for an answer. Can Jack open up about what drove him away from his life as an NHL hockey player? Can Emma trust that Jack will be there for her and Mack? Can Jack be the man Emma needs him to be for her and Mack? What happens when 2 people from Jack;s past show up to confront him? Will Jack show up when Emma needs him the most? What happens when Emma's ex shows up? I really enjoyed Comeback by June Winters. Comeback is a sweet love story with great characters who will make you laugh out loud one minute and scream in frustration the next. I would definitely recommend getting Comeback by June Winters.

I really wanted to love this since I’m such a huge sports romance fan but this one just missed the mark for me. Here are a few reasons why:

-The pacing felt off. The majority of the story took place in three days! Three! And then after that there were time jumps set for 3 weeks, 2 months, and 3 years later and none of them were that long.

-Jack, I wanted to like him because he was so good with Mack but I just couldn’t get past the fact that he was willing to sleep with married women or ones that had a boyfriend. It was almost like he felt he was entitled to it because his fiancé cheated on him with his best friend.

-Emma, I didn’t like how she demanded Jack give her personal information that he so clearly wasn’t read to share. I understand about the initial wanting to know his profession but after that? I don’t really see how she had the right to look him up when he hinted that he didn’t want that, and then after she found things out keep pushing him and giving him “one last chance” to tell her or she walk. Especially when she had just met him two days ago!

-I didn’t feel the love between Jack and Emma. Like I said, three days is really quick and with them I just didn’t feel the connection.

What I did end up enjoying about this book was Mackenzie! She was such a cute kid and I loved her enthusiasm over getting to go fishing. And I liked how Nicole, Emma’s cousin, supported her after what happened with her ex. Jack’s hockey friends wanting to be there for him over want happened him his ex and best friend was also a plus!

Very enjoyable feel good book. The book is about two people, both on the run from previous traumas find each other and slowly learn to open up. They are brought together by Emma's four year old little girl who due to the emotional ordeal she suffered because of her biological father's behaviour, refuses to talk to anyone except her mother. Jack meets mother and daughter and little Mackenzie feels an immediate affinity and takes a liking to Jack who realises almost at once that his time with one-night stands is over. He wants Emma. With Jack's help, Mack comes out of her shell and Emma is ecstatic and lets the reformed bad boy, gorgeous ex-hockey player into their lives. They fall in love but before they each have to manage a series of very distressing events. The author created superb, likeable and well developed main characters with believable supporting characters making this book a really sweet, romantic novel which I enjoyed very much. The storyline is well thought out and flows freely. Events are so well described that the reader feels part of the plot. The tension is handled very well. I don't want to go into any more detail of the story, the author had already created a good synopsis. This work is a great addition to anyone's romantic book collection. Well worth reading this feel-good book. Brilliant editing adds to the quality of this novel.

June Winters hits it in the net with COMEBACK, the second book in the Dallas Devils series. Former Dallas Devils captain Jack Hathaway secretly retired in Bayfield, Ontario. He meets single mom Emma Swenson and her four-year-old daughter Mackenzie, reminding him of the life he used to dream of. This contemporary sports romance is suitable for adult readers.

I had been looking forward to reading this story ever since finishing book one in the series, DATE WITH A DEVIL. In the first book, Jack’s mysterious disappearance after a teammate’s death was initially mentioned. June Winters does a great job unfolding Jack’s story and explaining his need to vanish.

June Winters does a great job with her character development. I like Jack and Emma. They both suffered emotionally after being betrayed by people they trusted or should have been able to rely on; neither plan on opening themselves up to another again. I like Mackenzie’s role in the story. She’s an adorable little girl. I appreciated how the three of them grow and heal through the story.

I enjoyed the plot. I love how Jack, Emma, and Mackenzie first meet. I like Nicole’s crystal observations. I thought it was clever how both Jack’s and Emma’s pasts played a part in this novel. COMEBACK is skillfully written and entertaining. It is the perfect addition to the Dallas Devils series. I recommend this book to people that enjoy sports romances. Redemption, love and suspense
Excellent romance which I loved the two heroes Emma and Jack. Both characters are very realistic and they have their feet on the ground about their relationship, what it would involve and the honesty they need to trust each other.
They both blame themselves for their past, of which they are not guilty even if they have a part in the two events of their life, and they put a permanent pressure either to punish themselves or not to find themselves again trapped: Jack tries to hide from the press and his former hockey players colleagues, and Emma has fled her ex-companion who once out of prison sought to assault her and take her their 4-year-old daughter. Meeting by chance, and looking for no emotional connection, they discover themselves and learn to free themselves from their past.
This story is at once moving, tender, torrid, and contains action and suspense.

The story was great. Emma, a single mom with a toddler, Mackenzie, is struggling to balance motherhood with her job as a waitress when she meets Jack. To tell you anything more would spoil the great story. I will admit that I was confused through the beginning of the story, but that is all my fault. This book is 2nd in a series, and I felt like I was missing part of the background; however, it was not confusing enough that I went back and read the first one. Although the story is intriguing, the dialogue writing seems forced at times, especially towards the end of the book. The lack in this aspect of the book did not take away from the story, and I was still interested in finding out what happened to Emma, Jack, and Mackenzie. I would recommend but have patience; the story is worth the wait.

This is a well written book that flows beautifully and was an absolute pleasure to read

Jack is a hockey player who is dealing with more than his fair share of heartache his fiancee Megan cheated on him with his best friend so he has given up his career His answer is to retreat to a small town and have as many one night stands as he can he isn't particularly nice in the way that he treats women Then he meets Emma she has fled with her daughter Mackenzie from a abusive relationship. The affect of that relationship is that she speaks to no one but her mother now she is speaking to Jack. He finally sees that there is a chance of a future for him and he wants Mackenzie and Emma to be that future but can he convince Emma. She makes him face his past but her past is closing in on them Do they have a future together

I volunteered to read this ARC for an honest review. I absolutely enjoyed this story about Jack and Emma and Mackenzie. Jack's a retired hockey player hiding in a lake side mansion, trying to keep his past from two years ago from surfacing. Emma is on the run with her daughter Mackenzie. Her ex Trevor is bad news and she fears for their lives. Unfortunately Mackenzie is traumatized after what happened at her fourth birthday Pink ever showed up drunk. Unfortunately Mackenzie has now what they call selective mutism. But when she meets Jack she actual talks to him. There is an instant connection but she's afraid he's a player and he's afraid to trust again. When push comes to shove Jack is there to protect Emma and Mackenzie. Great HEA.

Another Ice Melting Success

I really am glad I restarted this series with the first book. Reading them in order (while it's probably not necessary) makes the experience more enjoyable. When Jack was first introduced in book 1, I was really curious how much of what the team told (the readers) was true and what was just pure emotions without the benefit of intellect. Well in Comeback, we get all the answers and more. At one point I felt the story between Jack & Emma was losing steam if I were to compare it to Date With A Devil but then Emma's story arks with an unexpected visitor that changes the entire temperature up until their arrival and that gave mea little hope and I also learned to expect the unexpected when reading June Winter's books in the future. I can't wait for the next book, thankfully it's already out! Until next time!

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this because it’s the first story I read by this author and I hadn’t read the first book in the series. Normally I like to start from the beginning. But I wasn’t disappointed. The story flowed nicely and I found myself unable to put the book down because I needed to find out what happened next. Both Jack and Emma were running from their past but Emma has the extra responsibility of protecting her 4-year old daughter who is suffering from her own trauma. But she immediately takes to Jack and it’s just a matter of time before they all realize they want to be together. I love that the story has an epilogue and that everyone gets what they needed at the end.

The scandal pulled me through the previous book, and now I get to see what happened from the other side of the events. There is so much emotion and angst tied up in these pages. Emma and Jack dragged me into their world, and nothing was going to pry me loose until I saw this story through to the end. This was another ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ kind of read for me. I was so completely engrossed in watching Jack and Emma falling for each other I didn’t even notice that time was passing. And that epilogue was the most perfect way to end their book. I don’t care that I’ve just finished this one, I loved it so much I want the next one already.

Hot Hockey Love!
Loved this storyline and characters especially the child Mac. She stole the scenes every time she was a part of them. Her mom, Emma was a classic child of an alcoholic and married an emotional abusive man who she had to flee from and move in with her cousin. While living in this small lake side town she meets this secretive man, Jack who happens to be a pro hockey player in hiding. Shenanigans ensues.
The book reads really well. I was immediately engaged with the story and remained so thru until the end.
Definitely recommending this book for your reading enjoyment and pleasure. In fact I’ve secured book one so I can read about Dante, another player from the same team, Dallas Devils.

Emma and Jack need healing!

Emma Swenson moved to Bayfield to get her life back together for her and her daughter Mackenzie after her now ex-husband had his parental right taken away for driving drunk with Mackenzie in the car. Jack Hathaway was a guy that nobody in Bayfield knew anything about other than he was the roller-blading guy. He had left Dallas and the Dallas Devils hockey team after the death of his best friend in a car accident.

Jack had a connection with Mackenzie and that is the way to Emma’s heart through her daughter but Jack not wanting to talk about himself almost ended the relationship before it started.

Comeback is the follow-up to Date with a Devil and both are good sports romances.

I sure liked the premise of the book. It seems quite original as I read tons of hockey romance.
I think my problem was the pacing. It was too fast that he wanted answers from her and maybe if you think about it there was merely weeks of the main part of story taking place.
I did like the drama. It seemed real.

Jack's sports agent would of been involved with his whole mess. Never gets mentioned. And hockey team would of sued Jack for breach of contract I should think...somebody knew where he was and he was not going to be able to hide. Good that he learned to be a man. Mackenzie was adorable!!

Another good book in the series. Jack is a retired hockey player hiding out from the world. Emma is a single mom running from an abusive ex-husband. Jack is immediately attracted to Emma, but she has strong reservations about getting involved with any man. Emma's daughter Mackenzie is having social anxiety issues and refuses to speak to anyone except Emma until she meets Jack. Jack slowly works his way into Emma's affections and she makes him confront the issues that he is dealing with just as her ex tracks her down. They eventually get their HEA and he goes back to hockey.

I really enjoyed this book. You don't have to read the first one to understand this story. You will get more background on the characters if you do but not necessary. The story was well written and flowed well, strong and likeable characters and steamy hot chemistry between Emma and Jack. Emma is a single mom that is trying to have a new start. Jack is a professional hockey player trying to hide. The come together to help one another. You will fall in love this this book, characters and series. A must read.
