Witchless in Seattle #9

Witches Get Stitches

Rate this book
When last we met, good people, the biggest wish I’ve ever made came to fruition. It didn’t happen without some help—okay, a lot of help. Either way, let’s just say the deed was done.

My outrageously handsome, smart, sometimes persnickety (read mostly persnickety) Spy Guy, Winterbottom, is finally here on earth with me, recuperating from his afterlife jaunt.

And I couldn’t be happier…

Sure, he can be a difficult patient. He’s forever bellowing my name from his sick bed. He likes his socks ironed and his toast cut in triangles, thank you very much. Add in the fact that some of the spells I've cast to make this dream a reality have had repercussions (an understatement), and it’s been sheer chaos.

But all tomfoolery aside, Win’s here with us, and I’m thrilled, as you can imagine.
Mostly.

So when it’s decided amongst my favorite men I should take a day for myself and hit Seattle for some much-needed shopping, I hesitantly head out.

And then I die.

As you can imagine, it only goes downhill from there…

This series continues but now Win has rejoined the living. This is much more satisfactory. But now, just when Stevie and Win are both on the same plane, Stevie disappears. Danger and action come back into the story as Win goes into Spy Guy mode.

It might be a silly concept, but I really enjoy this group of characters.

Some spoilers from previous stories.
Win and Stevie have waited years to finally be together on the earthly plane but maybe there has been a little too much together lately, especially with a frustrated International Man of Mystery who is still bedridden and recovering from a head injury and who might be really, really picky about how his socks are ironed.

Win, Belfry and still ghostly Russian spy Arkady all convince Stevie that a shopping trip to Seattle would give her a break from her role as caregiver and a little needed distance from the love of her life. A retail boost to the newest vintage clothing store is just what Stevie needs. Problem is that once she arrives at the store things sort of go black. Until she finds herself looking at the face of her friend Arkady, and while she is excited to finally meet him in the flesh, so to speak, meeting her Russian friend means that Stevie has landed on Plane Limbo, so…when did she die? Was Stevie attacked or did one of those many wonky spells that she tossed out when trying to find Win come back to bite her? Things kept randomly happening, like that dinosaur and that glacier that popped into their backyard. But dead? And if she is dead, why does she appear more substantial than all the other spirits in Plane Limbo?

Win might be weak and he might have nothing to wear but PJs, but even dressed in a crazy Christmas sweater and shorts, he is determined to figure out just what has happened to Stevie. It starts with getting out of the house without falling down. Gaining the assistance of an uber driver named Gooch, Win heads to Seattle to find Stevie’s body and help her return her spirit to it before it is too late.

But if Stevie’s sudden appearance in Plane Limbo was just the side effect of a spell gone wrong, what happened to Stevie’s body, why can’t they find it and why is someone chasing Win?

When I first read the synopsis of this book, I almost lost my mind. We have waited all these many stories while our favorite Spy Guy figured out how to return to the earthly plane to be with Stevie. Now Stevie was going to die? No, no, no, no, NO!

I was very tense this whole story trying to figure out what happened. This story takes place almost immediately after the end of the last story when Win has just returned to a physical form in a body which had been at death’s door. This makes Win physically weak and especially frustrated because he is used to his super-spy reflexes. Also the tables have turned, and now Win has Stevie talking to him from the other side. As Win investigates, Stevie’s form on Plane Limbo becomes more and more insubstantial. Does that mean they are running out of time? They aren’t sure but with time ticking away and Stevie’s body still missing, Win is getting desperate. He is weak and she is more worried that his continued exertion will land him right back on plane limbo as well, but Win isn’t going to give up on Stevie or their HEA. If it comes down to it, Win will risk his new existence to save Stevie.

I know it is a silly series and is the literary equivalent of Twinkies but I really enjoy these characters.

Sadly, this series has a Regency feel to the romance. I get that this is more a PG series but a passionate kiss or even a tight embrace might be in order. After being in love for about two years, Win finally takes the chance to return to this existence from Plane Limbo, and after almost losing Stevie, Win has declared that they are not going to wait until he his fully recovered before moving forward with their relationship (finally), he is going to start wooing Stevie starting right now! (What?) And since he doesn’t want to sully her reputation by staying in the same giant, multi-bedroom house, he is turning the garden shed into a guest house. (Come on!) These two have been moony-eyed and desperately in love this whole time and after yet another near-death experience and “realizing more than anyone most how fragile life is,” they have decided to have dinner? I was pissed after the last story when Win finally body snatches and returns to the earthly plane and they can finally be together, and all we got was some hand holding and a tiny kiss. Yeah, I get it. Body snatching was a lot of work and his body needs to recover but come on! If you want to keep it PG, we don’t have to watch, but especially with what they have been through, what the heck are they waiting for? Life is short, get married and make babies already. This is getting crazy.

This is a series that I enjoyed listening to on audiobooks but a good deal of time has passed from the original ebook release date and even the release of Book 10 and still no audiobook. I even reached out to the author on Twitter to find out what happened, and she indicated the only hold up was with Tantor. Since Book 11 is due out next month, I finally gave in and purchased eBook copies of both Book 9 and 10 and no surprise to me, I read the story with the narrator’s voices in my head.

4.5 Stars... We finally get to see Win in action and it is a doozy of an adventure... From the outfit, to the schmoozing, to the sleuthing, to the fight scenes, Win proves why he is the spy guy to beat... When Stevie disappears and ends up on plane limbo, it takes the entire team to find her body and some answers... In a complicated and complex scheme that unravels one clue at a time, this makeshift family comes together to bring Stevie back before it is too late... Moments of humor and certainly moments of heart coalesce to finally bring our beloved characters to their own version of a happily ever after:)

Entertaining, but the magical world-building is lacking

It has been two years since 34-year-old, ex-witch, Stevie Cartwright, first connected with the ghost of the dead British spy, Crispin Alistair Winterbottom (“Win”), in the small town of Ebenezer Falls, Washington. At the end of Book 8, Witch Way Did He Go, Win had just taken over the body of his identical twin at the point of his twin’s death in a hospital due to a traumatic head injury. Even though his twin’s body was too damaged for it to sustain life, causing his twin’s spirit to leave it and “go to the light,” the act of Win’s spirit entering that body somehow caused it to revive to such an extent that Win was able to safely leave the hospital only a few days later. However, the same unexplained miracle that brought that borrowed body back from death did not go so far as to restore it to full health. As a result, while Win is living with Stevie in the extensively renovated mansion he willed to her, he has required the home-based care of a nurse and a physical therapist. Unfortunately, Win is a cranky, demanding patient, and as much as Stevie loves him, her patience is wearing thin. In order to rest and refresh herself, Win suggests that Stevie take a day off in nearby Seattle and engage in her favorite hobby, searching for gently used, high-fashion clothing in consignment shops.

Stevie happily sets off for her fun excursion, leaving her tiny, bat familiar, Belfry, behind with Win, but soon after she arrives at her destination, something very strange and frightening happens to her. Her last memory of her trip to Seattle is shortly after she enters her favorite shop there. And the next time she is aware of her surroundings, she is in spirit world, on Plane Limbo, with Arkady! Just as Arkady can communicate from that realm with Belfry and Win on the physical plane, so can Stevie. At first, all four of them wonder if Stevie has died, but Arkady points out that her spirit body doesn’t look quite like that of the other ghosts around her, including Arkady himself, and only Arkady seems to see her. The four friends hypothesize that when (during the previous book) Stevie was desperately trying to locate Win’s missing ghost by flinging around spells she imperfectly remembered from the witch spell book that was taken away from her when she was banished from her witch coven, one of the spells might have torn her spirit from her body and flung it into Plane Limbo. The problem is, this means her body is lying somewhere, appearing to be dead, and what needs to happen ASAP is to locate her body before it actually does die, and Stevie is stuck in Plane Limbo for good.

Win, Arkady, Stevie and Belfry come to the mutual decision that they do not dare to call the police, because if the police find Stevie’s body, they will declare her dead, and she might be sent to the morgue and her body autopsied—which would destroy her body and assure that Stevie dies. They also decide, to Stevie’s extreme dismay on Win’s behalf, that there is no one else available to search for Stevie’s body but him. However, Win is not only in a dicey state of health, he has no clothing of his own available to wear but pajamas and slippers. He rifles through Stevie’s closet and locates an old pair of droopy, fluorescent-colored, exercise shorts that no longer fit her after she dropped 10 pounds doing vigorous “mini-spy” training while coached by Win and Arkady. For a shirt, the only thing Stevie has that might fit Win is a hideous Christmas sweater. All he can do for shoes is keep wearing his bedroom slippers, and to round off his crazy costume, he plops an ugly knit cap on his head. He puts Belfry in the usual place Stevie does when she takes him outside the house with her—wrapped in a cloth napkin inside a big, old purse—and slings the purse over his shoulder. He doesn’t have access to any money, because he hasn’t yet worked out what he is going to use for identification, since his dead brother was a criminal, and all of the money he willed to Stevie is in her name. Then he calls an Uber driven by a young man in his early 20’s, willing to drive him based on the promise of being paid at a later time, and sets off for Seattle to find Stevie’s body.

For me personally, some of the best parts of this book are the scenes of Stevie in beautiful, peaceful Plane Limbo with Arkady. She is able to see what he looks like, hug him, and experience the place where Win had been staying during the previous two years when he had been communicating with her as a ghost that she could hear but not see. We previously had a chance to experience this entrancing place in the book which is written entirely from Win’s point of view, Book 6, Ain't Love a Witch? And it was fun to visit Plane Limbo again.

Though Stevie is, clearly, in a life-or-death situation, since this is a comedic mystery series, her terrifying dilemma is handled in the typical, humorous, slapstick format of all the previous whacky books in this series. Ignoring her own incipient demise, Stevie spends most of the book yelling at Win to forget about her and go back home and take care of himself before he collapses. Win, of course, spends the whole book ignoring Stevie’s concern about his health, since he loves her and doesn’t want her to die, given the fact that he has gone to such enormous lengths to get back to the physical plane to be with her. As a result, Win incessantly soldiers on, so intent on his mission, he rarely rests or eats, and never spares a moment to find another set of clothing that doesn’t make him look like a mentally ill street person.

Though overall I mostly enjoyed this book, I did not have nearly as much fun with it (and the very end of Book 8) as the first seven books in this series, for the following reasons:

1. Stevie spent all of the previous book looking for Win and now, rather redundantly, Win spends this entire book looking for Stevie. I prefer it when they are solving the murders of people I don’t care about.

2. According to the rules of the magic involved in this story universe, in order for Win to succeed in permanently taking over a physical body, he has to hop into it at the exact moment of its death. In the case of Win taking over the body of his identical twin, the death of that body, and the spirit’s exit from that body and the physical plane, is caused by an injury grievous enough that the body is incapable of sustaining life. But even so, after Win hops into his twin’s fatally damaged body, miraculously, it is no longer near death. In fact, it has healed so dramatically, Win is able to go home a couple of days later. Unfortunately, unlike the Warren Beatty movie from 1978, Heaven Can Wait (HCW), in this story there is no guardian angel (or any other paranormal being) standing by with the magical ability to instantly, 100% heal the mortally injured body. In this story, with no magical intervention, it is spontaneously healed enough that Win can leave the hospital, but it does not sustain enough unexplained, magical healing to avoid needing weeks of bed rest, assiduous nursing care, and frequent physical therapy. I wondered, if the body is going to be, inexplicably, healed that much, why not all the way? In addition, when Win initially sets out to find Stevie’s body, we are informed that he can barely shamble with the help of a cane. In spite of that, he is somehow able to keep chugging along for over 48 hours with only 3 hours of sleep and very little food. And by the end of that physical ordeal, which might easily cause a young, healthy person to collapse, we are informed that Win is so thrilled to be acting like a super spy again, his psychological pleasure has, equally unaccountably, caused his borrowed dead body to become almost completely healthy. None of this is ever justified with any believable, magical motivation whatsoever.

3. Throughout the whole book, Stevie laments that she has absolutely no idea how, if her body is found, she can get back into it. Multiple times she asks Win to explain how he jumped into his twin’s dead body, and he always acts like it will be a hugely complicated explanation that he has no time to give her in the midst of searching for her missing body. But when there are only moments to go for her to jump back into her catatonic body in order to stop one of the villains from destroying it, Win gives her two seconds of utterly simple instructions as to how to get back into her body, which she effortlessly follows with instant success. This is not only poorly motivated, but extremely anti-climactic.

4. I got tired of Win wearing a humiliatingly bizarre outfit the entire story. We are supposed to believe his British accent, handsome face, and charisma are sufficient to cause everyone he meets (other than the villains) to ignore his weird appearance. I realize that, in order to make the story more compelling, the author has chosen to orphan Win so he has to handle the physically demanding ordeal of locating Stevie’s body all on his own. But in reality, it is not true that Stevie, Win, Arkady, and Belfry know of absolutely no one who might understand what has happened to Stevie and offer support. Win and/or Belfry could easily have called the demon woman and her occasionally demon-possessed nun friend from Book 7, Good Witch Hunting, to drive over to Seattle from Portland to help Win during his 48-hour ordeal, including bringing him a change of clothes and a some decent food. Portland is only 175 miles away, which is a drive of a mere two hours and 52 minutes.

5. At the point when Win finally gets a physical body, he and Stevie have been BFFs for over two years, have admitted to being madly in love with each other, they are both in their 30s and, during his lifetime, Win was an extremely sophisticated man of the world. And yet, in spite of all this, Win and Stevie mutually decide they will not engage in sex with each other until they get to know each other better. This makes no sense to me. How much better could hey possibly know each other? It seems to me that the author made a conveniently artificial decision to keep the two of them out of bed in order to maintain this series as G-rated as it has been up until now. There is never any swearing, the violence is mostly treated in a cartoonishly humorous way that is not quite PG, and there is zero sex either onstage or offstage.

6. Throughout this series, we are expected to accept as viable that, during Win’s perhaps, at most, 9-10 years as a super spy, he managed to save enough from his work paycheck that, via an unexplained ability to invest at the extraordinary skill level of a Warren Buffett, managed to swell his savings into wealth beyond the dreams of avarice. The problem is, unless Win was a dirty spy, taking massive, treasonous payouts from enemies of his country, he wouldn’t have had any means to become that rich. Even the present head of MI6, chief of the Secret Intelligence Service Alex Younger, is reported to be paid only around £160,000 (~$220,000) per year, and regular agents make around one-fourth to one-third of that amount.

7. If we accept as believable that Win was savvy enough to engage in investments so wildly successful as to make him practically a billionaire, he would have also been capable of realizing that setting up a trust fund, for the estimated $500,000 or more he decides to give as a reward to his loyal, young Uber driver, would have allowed that young man to avoid losing at least 45% of that money to state and federal taxes. Another obvious way to avoid a huge tax penalty would have been to directly pay the young man’s mother’s medical bills and the teenager’s college tuition.

The audiobook version of this novel that I listened to is performed by the terrific voice talent, Hollie Jackson, who narrates the entire series, and it is a joy to listen to. She does an outstanding job with male and female characters, both low- and high-pitched timbers, and every kind of foreign accent, especially Win’s British accent and Arkady’s Russian accent.

This was so much fun! I was probably the one in stitches reading Witches Get Stitches because it was just so comical. And it's always good to be back with my favorite characters, who have once again landed themselves in the thick of a mystery.

In the last book Stevie tried every single spell she knew trying to get/find Win. And some of them are having a delayed response - including an iceberg in her backyard, for example! So when Stevie shows up with Arcady in Limbo they aren't sure what's happened. Is she dead? Or is it another spell gone awry? Since Win has JUST found his way to Stevie, despite having no clothes besides pajamas and recovering from near death, he is determined to solve this mystery. Hilarity ensues. From his attire, to the Uber driver, to the way he gets himself out of messes, I was laughing my way through this book. And there was one very fun spy-guy driving scene too!

However, as far as storyline goes... this was definitely filler. It was fun filler, to be sure, but it didn't really feel like we went anywhere in the overall series plot. And the mystery wasn't really one that I ever felt very invested in (beyond would they find Stevie's body?). I wonder if we'll ever see the uber driver again... he was a nice kid and I'd like to see more of him.

As always, Hollie Jackson really delivered a great performance! She breathes such life into Stevie, Win, Arcady and Bell - they have incredibly distinct voices and I feel as if I can see them. Always a fun listen - especially at 2x, which is how I listen to most books.

Getting caught up on this series with another fun adventure. This time it’s Winn’s turn come to the rescue of Stevie. Somehow, a day of shopping and relaxation resulted in her body missing and Stevie being stuck on limbo. Now it’s up to the gang to locate her body before it’s too late

Witches Get Stitches is book 9 in the Witchless in Seattle series and picks up right where book 8 left off. Love it when a series does that!

While the lovely Miss Dakota recommends reading the series in order to fully understand the backstory and history of each character, you can still read it as a standalone if you like. But I agree that you should read them in order, just for the richer reading experience.

The story opens with the dashing ex-spy, ex-ghost Winterbottom recuperating from rejoining the living. Unfortunately, he’s a less than ideal patient, driving Stevie mad with his constant demands.

Despite being a grumpy, impatient patient, Winterbottom is still a sweetheart and encourages Stevie to take a break. Maybe go to Seattle to check out a new vintage clothing store that just opened?

Since thrift shopping is her weakness, Stevie reluctantly agrees. On the condition that they call her immediately if anything happens.

Too bad she never makes it inside the store once she gets there. Especially since there’s this really cute, vintage Givenchy dress in the window….

Next thing she knows, Stevie wakes up dead!

At least, that’s what she assumes when she finds herself on Plane Limbo. Good thing Arkady, the other ex-spy in her life, is there so she doesn’t have to face this newest crisis alone.

Stevie, Winterbottom, Arkady, and Belfry try to figure out what happened to Stevie, where her body is, and whether or not she’s really dead or if this is just another misfire from one of her spells.

And they need to hurry if they don’t want Stevie to wind up a permanent resident of Plane Limbo!

Love, love, love this series!

Stevie is a great character and I’ve loved seeing her get back on her feet after losing her witch powers! And Belfry is one of my favorite characters, as who wouldn’t love a sassy talking bat?

Witches Get Stitches is a fast, fun read with a quick moving plot, great characters, awesome as usual writing, and Dakota’s trademarked sense of humor.

With ghosts, ex-witches, talking bats, sexy ex-spies back from the dead, and an intriguing mystery, this series has something for everyone! Highly recommended!

I was given an advanced copy of this book for my honest opinion. If you enjoy quirky characters, humor and misadventures, you will enjoy this book and any others with Dakota Cassidy’s name on it. She is the Queen of snarky comments! Her books make me laugh, cringe, scared and happy to be along on the adventures!

(I would recommend that you read the other books in this series to get to know Stevie, Winterbottom, Arcady and the other characters. Stevie is a former witch who has lost her powers. Win is a former British spy, ala James Bond. He was stuck in an alternative universe called Plane Limbo. She can see ghosts and he can hear them.) In this book, Win is back on Earth in a damaged body. Stevie has been Win’s caretaker cheerleader and go-for. He sends her on a shopping trip to a vintage clothing store in Seattle—- and she disappears! Various ghosts appear to help Win find Stevie. It is a roller coaster ride of a mystery!

I was almost at my patience end with the previous book in this series, so this book being as fun as it is was a pleasant surprise.

This story finally has the right protagonist (Win), who is capable of moving the plot along instead of helplessly waiting for things to happen for others to do it. Following Stevie in the previous books was painful because of her reliance on others and inability to take any helpful actions for the story resolution. (I am sad that the author had chosen to portrait Stevie that way and that is still a continuous source of disappointment with this series.) In this book, Stevie is literally just watching from the sidelines, which is a much more natural place for a helpless ineffectual character. Still disappointing, but less aggravating from the storytelling perspective.

I do hope that this book's evening is a good sign for the following books in terms of giving Stevie some much needed agency in these stories.

Spy Guy and Stevie, switched!

Now that Spy Guy Win is finally back in the land of the living, of course something will go wrong. The repercussions of Stevie's spell-bonanza are still working their way through the universe and it looks like one of those spells was a doozy! Stevie is launched out of her body and into Plane Limbo where she finds Arkady. But what does that mean for her body? No soul, no life! So it's a race against the clock to track down what's happened to Stevie's body and get her back into it before she really is dead.
This book has all the signature snark of the Witchless in Seattle series, and all the fun. Highjinks and wisecracks with a supernatural flair. Hop in and enjoy the ride.

I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
This was a great book !
Win is finally corporeal. Who would have thought !
A little indisposed, but totally corporeal.
Steve is super happy that at least one of her spells worked.
Now they can have their HEA.
They should know that it was too good to be true.
One minute Stevie is about to shop, and the next, Steve is in limbo with Arkady
Now the whole gang had to solve the mystery of what happened to Stevie.
Loved the characters + the storytelling !
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
I can't wait for the next book in this series.

90% mush free! Yeah, I was surprised too.

Most of the mush is reserved for the epilogue, and even then it wasn't as over the top as I feared. And aside from the fact that Win would have legit been dead (again), or at the very least require serious hospitalization at least three times for the shenanigans he got into over the course of the story, it was fun to see Spy Guy in action. My only real complaint is there wasn't more Arkady. For all he was hanging out with Stevie in limbo the entire time, he really only speaks up for moral support.

Loooooved it!

Ah, my favorite series. Okay, to be honest, it's the ONLY series I've read from the first to the latest. I love the characters in this series, can't seem to be able to read it fast enough although I so hate to see it end. Book #9 certainly proved it was worth the wait, and I'm already salivating for #10. C'mon Dakota; write faster! Thank you for yet another dynamite book and letting me hang with Stevie and the gang!

Roll Reversal

WOW. This one is fast and furious. When Win encourages Stevie to have a day out from worrying about him and his recovery, he never thought he would be hearing from her from on high or more accurately Plane Limbo. The adventure starts there and doesn't stop. The Stevie family grows by two due to an enthusiastic Uber driver. This is one wild ride.

Pretty decent

I was going to give this more stars because she writes terrific stories. She has great interaction and her characters are quite nicely developed but i was dissappointed that she previewed an OLD book on here! Its like it made me think WHO IS THIS ANYWAY? DOES SHE THINK WE ARE STUPID?

Wow, this story really took me by surprise. You will just have to read the book to find out the turn this story takes. Suffice to say, Win and Stevie find their way back together. Whew!

Fun and interesting story about the adventures of an ex-with and her adventures in Ebeneezer Falls, Washington. Who would have thought that so many mysteries and deaths could happen in a small Washington town?

The darkest one yet in the series not so much laughter here but a depth to the story that I really enjoyed. I can’t really go into the plot without spoilers but if you’ve read the others, the saga continues I’d you haven’t, stop resting this and download book 1 immediately ha ha! It was a little difficult for me to get into at first; I think because I was disappointed that Win finally got to Earth but then Stevie was in Plane Limbo. As they found more clues, however, I was drawn in.

Roles are switched up in this one! Stevie's day off is supposed to be relaxing with some retail therapy, and next thing she knows she's meeting Arkadie in Limbo! Where is Stevie's body and can spy guy and her other friends help find her body in time to survive?

This entire series is one of my favorites. You will love the main characters along with their cooky pets and a sweet white bat familiar. I won't give any spoilers...I can't wait to read each new book in the series.

I thought this one was okay but I just didn't like it as much as the others from the series. The "mystery" part was just different. It happens though sometimes there is just one in the series you don't like as much as the others.

In-between

The shoes on the other foot now and it's our guy's turn to figure things out. Reversed roles lead to a crazy wild ride as our guy navigates the twists and turns of a spell gone wrong.

I love this series!

The story just keeps getting better. Each plot is unexpected, unique, and thrilling. The characters continue to grow and evolve. New characters join the cast. I can't wait to read the next book on the series. So much fun!
