This image is a good summary of this volume:

description

Yuu still have his hero complex and wants to save everyone, including one of the angel that try to kill him. The whole squad seems to have the same values: live for your family and damn the consequences.

Shinoa’s demon is trying to play matchmaker for some obscure reason. I truly hope that this manga won’t push Shinoa/Yuu romance, the plot is messy enough as it is this is not really needed. (And I will forever be a Mikayuu shipper anyway….)

The older vampires progenitors decide to listen to Queen Krul and changes some of humanity rules.

The volume finish with some major cliffhanger/reveal, and hopefully thing will be explains since I am quite confuse with the whole vampire experimentation, saving the world, angels things.

Yu sets out to save another Seraph – despite that being declaring that he is a forbidden thing, neither human, angel, nor demon, that must therefore die. Shikama Doji, the First, tempts Shinoa. The conflicts of three separate vampires with the First begin to be revealed, and we get hints that Yu (and possibly Mika as well) may be way older than they look!

I am SO not a fan of the “Shinoa loves Yu” sub-plot! Mind you, that doesn’t mean I don’t like Shinoa – she’s got a good base to her character, and I want to see more of cleverness and developing leadership skills, not…this. Having three separate older characters (Guren, Mahiru, and now SD) making a thing about Shinoa wanting Yu and implying that her decision is all that matters - when there’s been zero evidence of Yu being interested in Shinoa - gives me the creeps! Of course, that may well be the point, since all three characters have a history of being manipulative and untrustworthy!
I suppose it isn’t odd for Shinoa to be impressed by how Yu is willing to throw his body and soul into rescuing not only those he loves but pretty much anyone he can relate to even a little. But if she wanted to be “taught” how to be that passionate, there’s two other examples in this very volume: Mika tackling an angel without a second thought to help Yu, and Kimizuki likewise joining the fight because returning this Seraph to humanity means that his sister, too, might be saved. And Yu’s “save everyone ” attitude means that being rescued by him does not equal love!
I’m not arguing that Mika and Yu’s relationship is perfect, BTW. One big issue, as will become abundantly clear later, is their frightening level of co-dependency. However, they do seem to instinctively know that telling each other the darkest thoughts, like “If I lost you again, I don’t think I’d want to live” or “I think you might be my only remaining anchor to humanity” would put too much of a burden on the person they love. WE know that they think these things, but out loud with each other they tend to stick to either positive things like “I want us to live on together” and “You’ll always be my family” or, on the more negative side, blaming themselves for any bad things that happened (which the other will quickly and emphatically say was not their fault).

Favorite part:
Yu is riding on the top of the bus. Mika comes climbing up after him: “Have you ever heard the saying that idiots, like smoke, like climbing to high places?” [Yu] “Nope! But you just climbed up here, so does that make you an idiot too?” [Mika] “Hrm. Given all I’ve let happen of late, I can’t really deny that can I?”
He’s just starting to melt and smile in response to Yu’s optimistic chatter, when Yoichi decided to join them. [Mika, looking put out] “No. Go away!” [Yu] “He says yes!” Yoichi announces to everyone else that Mika says they should come up. [Mika] “I didn’t call for you!” [Mitsuba] “You actually like doing dumb kiddie stuff like riding on the roof? No wonder you and Yu get along so well.”
Despite the vampire’s protests, EVERYONE climbs up on the roof. [Yu] “Hey, Mika” [Mika] “What?” [Yu] “You do too have more friends.” [Mika] “Oh, shut up!”

Most intriguing bits (spoilers, obviously):
- [Ferid] “My, my! Two little angels who can end the whole world, sitting so nicely in the same place…Speaking of angels, we have one more person here with an angelic name, don’t we? It was Michael…no, I’m sorry, Mikaela. Who gave you that name, I wonder? Are you an angel too?” Ferid notes that Saito used to call him “Mikaela”, his angel…only to later abandon him. And Saito was the one who brought both Mika and Yu to that orphanage!
- Even though Yu is arguably a paragon character (his motivations are simple and generally admirable even when not especially wise, and he is really good at leveraging the Power of Friendship) he looks more evil than, say, the First or the other Seraphs. Notably, his wings are black and made of some jagged, oily-looking substance rather than being pristine white feathers!
- Saito appears to be in some kind of a contest with Shikama Doji (AKA Sika Madu): “Is everything still proceeding according to your plan? Or am I catching up to you?” He holds two objects that look like cross-shaped daggers, one of which also was released when Yu et al. cured the other seraph. Ferid demands that one; when Mika asks what kind of messed-up experiment he wants it for, Ferid replies: “A messed-up experiment on saving the world” The vampire queen also admits that her involvement in the Seraph of the End research – including keeping Mika and Yu when they should have been killed – has something to do with her resentment against the First for taking her brother.
- Yu actually does call Asuramaru “he” here for the first time, probably to remind the reader of Krul saying she had a brother named Ashera. But Asuramaru is asleep when he does so (thereby not being able to respond) and has still not used any gendered language for themselves.
- A 1000 year flashback, of the future Shikama Doji buying Ashera from a slave merchant…accompanied by, apparently, Yu!

Yuichirou faces another seraph who may be the key to stopping the Four Horsemen of John, saving the world, and Kimizuki’s sister, Mirai. Naturally Kimizuki takes a keen interest in this fight. Mikaela, Shinoa, and the rest of Yu’s friends all come to his aid, but Shinoa is locked in a struggle with her own demon, Shikama Doji, a struggle that’s been going on for much longer than she’s been alive. How much can she trust her cursed gear? How much does her demon want her to give in to its urgings, especially when it seems Shikama Doji finds Shinoa all the more interesting for resisting. Nor is Shikama Doji the only one with a long-term enigmatic relationship with their wielder. Asuramura and Krul Tepes start to remember a time long ago, a time which may still be crucial as Krul regains her vampire throne; Saito plans his next moves, and Ferid Bathory reveals he’s as eager to save the world as he is to drain it dry, each moving and counter-moving each other while Guren Ichinose tries to second guess everyone. Amidst all this intrigue, Crowley Eusford isn’t quite sure where he stands. Much as he’d happily drain Yu and his friends dry, he’s also reluctant to. Can it be he’s seeing a lot of himself in Mika? Is he actually starting to like Yu, in spite of being a vampire? In this ever-changing world, where will vampires like Mika and Crowley stand?

There were a lot of revelations in this volume, not to mention developments of two of the strongest female characters in this series, Shinoa Hiragi and Krul Tepes, who showed just how much grit they have in the face of adversity. The mystery of just what Sika Madu, Saito, and Ferid Bathory are up to intensified as well, although Krul may well have similar goals to Yu and Mika. Perhaps she is as sympathetic to them as she claimed. Ky Luc is turning out to be quite intriguing and may prove as big a thorn in her side as Ferid Bathory ever was as he continues to assist her. I’m wondering if he’s going to be as good (or bad) as his word and be a thorn in Ferid’s side as well? The mystery raised involving Yu and Mika, especially on the last page made my imagination go wild. Is the Yuichirou Hyakuya the reincarnation or recreation of someone who lived long ago? Is Mika? Everything is moving quite fast, even while it stays beautiful and emotionally driven. Some of the panels with Shinoa, Krul, Ashera, and Asuramaru were especially attractive. Speaking of beauty, the almost angelic loveliness of Shikama Doji adds a disconcerting blurring of the sense of who’s a monster and who isn’t. At the same time, I’m admiring Shinoa all the more for standing up to her demon and wondering how many of her little actions up until now were to sabotage her demon’s plans? All of these elements mixed together made me fall in love with this read and wait breathless for the next volume.

How am I on Volume Seventeen already?

This series ups the stakes with every instalment, there are so many reveals and twists that quite often I'm left thinking oh my god after I've finished the volume. This one was no exception.

In this Yu faces off against another Seraph and inches closer and closer to becoming less human. Not that he ever really was, to begin with as we find out in here. It's hinted at that he and Mika have had a predetermined role to play in all the events that have been unfolding. One that dates back to their days in the orphanage.

As does one of my favourite characters, Shinoa. She seems to be battling with her demon, a creature that has been after her family since before her birth. I'd always wanted to learn more about her. She was always a mystery but has always demonstrated an unshakeable will. Unfortunately, making her all the more tempting to her demon.

I do think Yu's adage of must save family and everyone is family is beginning to wear a little. I get that it's fundamental to his character but at this point, we all know that.

3.5/5 barely rounded up for the good push towards story and mystery development. While Kagami has slowly transitioned into a new stage at this point it feels like we are firmly in it and it is beginning to start. Of course, like anything in Seraph of the End, it is still taking its time so it's picking up steam and speed in comparison to the regular extra-slow pace of Seraph of the End.
We start with a fun action-heavy first half with I really enjoyed most of it. It's clear Kagami is trying to give the side-cast some more love as the rest of Yu's squad do pick up and do more stuff in this volume. It's still nothing crazy but it makes them feel more like a squad and less of Yu and Guren and some side characters that occasionally do stuff. That being said we do some stuff with Shinoa that I do not like.
Then the latter half is full of plot related to the vampire characters. I love this as like I say in many past reviews I find the vampires' stuff far more interesting. We get a lot about Asuramaru/Ashera and Krul Tepes as we get introduced to their backstory. I enjoyed this as this gives Asuramaru/Ashera even more spotlight in this volume which I will never complain about. It's also interesting, well-written, and seems like it will FINALLY answer some questions. I'm looking forward to the next volume as the Saito/Rigr and Shikama Doji arc stuff starts seems to start kicking into (relatively) high gear.

In general, I love this series, however, I feel like this volume showcased my biggest problem with the series the most as it was used as a catalyst for Yu x Shinoa.

My biggest issue is Guren and Mahiru's relationship. I really get the ick from reading about Mahiru cheating on her fianceè with his best friend, and his best friend knowingly reciprocating her. It seemingly contradicts Guren's ENTIRE backstory, seeing that he valued his friends/family life so highly that he was willing to cause the apocalypse early for 10 more years with them, killing millions of people... but then the entire romance arc of Guren and Mahiru contracts that. Having a side romance with your best friend's fianceè is the complete opposite of Guren's values here. I think this causes such a big issue with my reading experience because Guren is one of the biggest characters driving the main storyline with his desire to permanently resurrect his family & resurrect all of humanity. As readers, we are supposed to believe that Guren values his 'family' before all else, but his actions show something completely different.

Although this doesn’t make me dislike the series as a whole, it definitely makes for super unenjoyable scenes. Such as in this volume.

Outside of this aspect, volume 17 was fairly enjoyable, although I do wish Ferid would stop being written as a pervert. I generally enjoy morally irredeemable characters, but his comments/actions towards children are too much for me to enjoy his character.

GOD THIS MANGA NEVER DISAPPOINTS! I'M GLAD WE'RE GETTING MORE BACKSTORY!! I LOVE THIS! THAT CLIFFHANGER WAS SO CRUEL THOUGH

Lots of lore dumps and I was lowkey confused a bit there. 😭 I know this series loves teasing the truth and it will all make sense later but for now I'm like what is this, what are we doing??

Learning more about Shinoa is great but imma need y'all to back tf out with that Shinoa x Yu ship because immediately no.♥️ The way it's so one sided is pathetic and she deserves better than to just be some love sick puppy, going after a taken boy who doesn't show any interest.

I need more Mika x Yu injected straight into my veins. Yu takes on another angel and it's a wild fight and Mika is screaming crying worrying about Yu the entire time, yelling at him over and over again to stop because he's afraid of the power. All he wants is to keep Yu safe.😭 But Yu is too pure and refuses to let someone suffer when he can save them.😭

At least Krul is finally done being burned at the stake and we learn more about her backstory when she became a vampire.

Then that last chapter... that twist... Bro when a plot twist hits you so hard you gotta put the book down and think about what you just read?? It doesn't make any damn sense and just leaves me with MORE questions but absolutely insane to tell me that and then say k seeya next volume.🫶

Hermano ponte a cojer tu si tanto quieres.

Not quite the action I was hoping for after the very long lead up. I keep thinking 'next volume there's going to be a big fight', but since one fight took up two volumes at one point, I suppose I should stop trying to guess. Big things revealed in this volume, but only a few because it takes an entire chapter. I assume it's supposed to serve as a cliffhanger to keep someone reading, wanting to know more, but I'm starting to waver in my interest. None of the characters are nearly as annoying as they were in the beginning, but it feels like very little happens per volume now; lots of time spent reading for very little gain.

Cap 69.

the twist-ys and the turn-ys!! Asuramaru and Yuichiro knew each other, dosnt that mean Yu is like incredibly old! Like demon old! Oh this is so weird!! I wanna know how it all works together!

Is Yu a demon? An angel? a human/ vampire? the seraph? a mix of everything!!?

Is Shinoa an angel? Is Mika? Isnt Shinoa supposed to have Doja (Kureto’s angel/ demon/ vampire)?

Everything is just so interconnected, meaning wise, i just need answers lol 😂

A good fight as we see Yuchiro grow as a fighter as we fights against another Angel and actually wins. But the most interesting thing is that we get to dive into Shinoa backstory and some her feelings as we kind of learn why she really has no emotions or at least why she is so reserved. We also dive into a Krul and her backstory and find out how she became a vampire.

Great read

I like that it has a bunch of lore behind this and it is a super cute yet brutal and unforgiving setting while still being wholesome and cute as well as showing that you need friends in life other wise what is there to live for
