Done with That: Escape the Struggle of Your Old Life

Rate this book
The Bible says the old life is gone and the new life has come (see 2 Cor. 5:17). But we still sin; still get angry, arrogant, and greedy. Sin destroys everything in its path, yet it’s also kind of fun and quite compelling. It often has us holding on to parts of the old life instead of embracing the new life we’ve been promised.   In Done with That, Pastor Bob Merritt exposes the inner battle we all fight with sin. He exposes the cycle of failure and loss and shows readers that no matter how many setbacks they’ve experienced, there is a way to enjoy a new and better life in Christ.

First. I know he is well meaning; but...

I DNF’ed at page 64, 25% in. I usually set a goal of at least 100 pages. My stopping point:

“Just as there are reasons for success, there are reasons for failure. If you’ve been married twice and are headed toward a third marriage, there are reasons for that. If your relationships are strained and in conflict, there are reasons. The problem isn’t out there somewhere; it’s in here. You’re the common denominator in every scenario. It’s time to be done with doing the same things and expecting different results.”

— Done with That: Escape the Struggle of Your Old Life by Bob Merritt

It was too triggering to me. My ex husband was verbally and physically abusive, cheated on me, and divorced me. He used my bipolar disorder as an out, instead of working through our issues. I did not want a divorce and tried all I could to save that marriage, even enduring abuse when I should not have. I was NOT the common denominator in my failed marriage. That divorce, 4 years later, still hurts me deeply. To insinuate I was the main reason, I had to stop. Should I have let him hit me just once? Or just a few more times to not let it fail? Should I have ignored the lies and womanizing? Maybe that would have gotten a different result.

I also felt something in my gut at his views towards children, that they are, “soul sucking monsters” and that theme doesn’t go away. We get it, you don’t love children and babies. It grated on me so much that I couldn’t get past it.

I couldn’t relate to his golf story either with his shoulder issue. Let’s try a grandmother with terminal cancer and a mother with dementia. I could care less if you can golf or not- or get your BMW.

Sticking with my tried and true Pastors- Max Lucado, John Piper, Dr. David Jeremiah.

This book was just what I needed in this season of my life. I devoured the information in this book, and just over 24 hours after starting it, it is covered in my underlinings, notes, and maybe even a couple of my tears. I will continue to go back to this book as life goes on. Amazing book.

Truly enjoyed this book. My brother gave it to me to read and I’ve now passed it along to my wife. I’d recommend it to anyone looking to break free from the traps and lies this world tries and sells you and get a fresh look at God’s goodness and some practical thoughts on which to grow.

I read the book Done With That by Bob Merritt. Done With That is about this pastor who made this book for people who wanna be done with that struggle or sin that we all have and to be done with the old and into the new,so he will share his own experiences and give you advice. I liked that he shared his personal stories because then it makes you more comfortable to know that he also has gone through big struggles. There aren't really a lot of characters but Bob is considered one of my favorites because he's the one who wrote the book and tells you his crazy stories. The character felt real because he is real. The book was easy to guess what would happen. My favorite part of the book was when he talked about our signature sin which is called when you have a certain sin you make constantly. The book made me feel captivated and focused because the book honestly is so interesting it will keep you wanting to read more and you learn so much from it so the book absolutely kept me turning pages. I didn't find anything in the book to dislike because I loved all of it but I would recommend this book by Bob Merritt to anyone because as a teenager reading this book made me realize and backtrack on certain aspects of my life and I would recommend this to a person whos stuck in their struggle life or any spouse or family that needs help with being done with whatever keeps them from moving closer to God or even being happy. My rating of Done With That by Bob Merritt is a 5 out of 5.

Bob has done it again and written a fantastic book! We all have things in our lives that we have a hard time overcoming. They might be a bad habit or a "Signature Sin" as Bob puts it. In this book, Bob transitions from helping you identify the things that might be tripping you up to giving tips on how to move from the old life into a new life filled with less bad habits and sin. I think anyone would benefit from reading this book. It's filled with striking honesty and openess that you don't always see from a pastor. This book is also touching and of course funny. Bob has a great sense of humor. Give it a read today, you won't regret it and I think by the end you might be able to say, "I'm done with that!".

Read this!

Until I read this book, I didn’t realize how much spiritual, emotional & relational work that I still have to do. Each chapter challenged me in new ways.

I truly appreciate the author’s honest & humility as he expresses his humanity. For instance, “Anytime we give in to our sinful nature, something in our lives suffers and dies a little.”

“The Bible is GPS sent by God, and it must be plugged into our brains to help us navigate this ride of life.”

“Ultimately, living the new life is really about living an ever-newer life. It’s about progress—not perfection.”

This book would be good for individual or group study.

Powerful, thought-provoking book that encourages the reader to get rid of some of the destructive baggage we all carry around with us. The book is a Christian testament to the power the Holy Spirit has when we turn our lives over to Him. Bob shares personal accounts as well as those of famous and everyday people who have seen the Holy Spirit work wonders in their own lives. This is a practical, at times humorous perspective on ways we can change small areas of our lives to have a big positive impact on the way we interact with others and, in turn, live more satisfying lives ourselves.

So Helpful

Have read many books on and about the Christian life. So often it is presented as a sermon or how to book but Bob Merritt has put it on a much more personal level. He shares his personal struggles with sin and how it impacted both his professional life and home life. He speaks to sinners as a sinner and gives good reasons of why and how to deal with those sins we repeat even after our best attempts to change. This book is not written from a lofty perspective but from a fellow sinner.
