Rate this book
Detective Jake Roberts and FBI profiler Mika Scott return in the murder mystery Mind Over Murder––the long awaited sequel to After the Evil. Both await the arrival of the flight that brings the infamous serial killer Lori Powers back to the U.S. to face charges escorted by Interpol agents.
Jared Hamilton is a genius, has earned multiple PhDs, and is twenty-five years old. His father Richard Hamilton is of one of the wealthiest men in the world. His mother Contessa was once an international supermodel. Jared has turned down offers by captains of industry, presidents of Ivy League universities, and Wall Street bankers. What Jared wants most is to be a criminal. He is already a world-class hacker and has committed a variety of felonies. Now he wants to experience the feel of blood on his hands. Jared wants to be a serial killer like Lori Powers and he wants Lori to be his consort. He devises a heinous plot to get Jake to bring Lori to him. When Jake discovers that he is Jarod’s next victim he puts together a plan, albeit illegal, to stop him.
This is not your run-of-the-mill serial killer story. “Mind Over Murder” is the perfect serial killer read!

I have been trying to write this review for weeks now but I just can't seem to find the right words to describe exactly how I felt reading this book. Plot-wise, just like the first book, Mind Over Murder was a good mystery-thriller too. Jared Hamilton's story had me biting my nails. I liked how the author weave his story, there's a right amount of action and suspense. Oh well, while I found the book enthralling, I want to be honest here. I was soooo disappointed with the characters death. Sorry, a little spoiler there but it bothered me so much that I stopped reading for a week. It might not bother other readers but it surely bothered me that I'm taking out one star for this second installment.

Mind Over Murder is the sequel to After the Evil and it is just as fast paced and accurate as After the Evil is. Unfortunately this book doesn’t have many reviews and it definitely deserves them! As the summary says it is the perfect serial killer read and once again I was glued to the pages and turning them without even realizing it until the story was over and I was longing for more. Cary Allen Stone has a way of writing that I can’t exactly pinpoint but his research, character build and of course the story is all laid out in a captivating way that definitely sucks you in and holds you there.

Mind over Murder: A Jake Roberts Novel: Jake Roberts Series, Book 2, my second read from author Cary Allen Stone, although I own several of his books I’d never gotten around to reading one until I read After the Evil (Jake Roberts, #1). 4-hours 53-minutes/178 pages but the book reads even longer. I’ll be reading more by this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

This is a good psychological thriller but it doesn't quite measure up to the suspense, chills, and challenges of AFTER THE EVIL, the first book in the series. However, Jake, Mika, and Juan are at their best working together again to stop another serial killer. You are kept on the edge as the killer plans each of his murders leading up to the finale. The camaraderie and loyalty among Jake's fellow policeman and policewomen is heartwarming during the trials they go through.

I heartily recommend this sequel to AFTER THE EVIL.

"A Mind Wrenching Murder Story"

This was a hard story for me to enjoy. Most of it deals with the psychotic killer's thoughts and actions. The best part is the ending. I've read one other book by this author which I did not care for either. The writing is not comfortable to read.

A copy-cat murderer

This is the second book in a Series of books wherein Detective Jake Roberts and his friend, Mika Scott, a FBI profiler, are awaiting the return of Lori Powers, the murderess in the first novel, who has been living incognito in Europe for ten years. Finally, Lori is caught and brought back to be incarcerated after she is found. Jake had fallen in love with Lori in the first book, and Lori cries when she sees him, for she still loves him, but knows she will spend the rest of her life in jail. Seeing Lori, makes Jake sad, but after Lori fled to Europe, Jake fell in love with another beautiful young woman, and makes up his mind to live without Lori. For anyone who has not read the first book, it may be a little confusing because people’s names come up and references to actions of Book 1, but as one reads the book, this confusion straightens out.
Suddenly there is another serial killer loose. He has killed a wealthy couple, a female judge who gets her kicks playing rough sexual games, and a young beautiful female news reporter, whom he also tortures before killing her. He calls Jake, using a falsetto voice pre-announcing his kills. This murderer is Jared and he is definitely mentally ill, but extremely intelligent and when he murders, he makes the victim suffer horribly. Now Jake is in line to be murdered, according to the murder’s phone call to Jake. Jake consults with Lori as to what she thinks may make this killer tick, since she was a serial killer and she has some ideas and will help Jake catch him.
Much of this story is not a “show, don’t tell” type of writing, but it works because Jake explains through his mental thoughts various insights that the reader needs in order for the story to work. This is a first class murder mystery and I recommend it.
I was given a complimentary copy of the e-book for an honest review.

The story picks up after a few years of ‘After the Evil’ and Lori Waters has finally been caught and is being brought to stand trial. There has been enough publicity on her case and even a book has been written about her. Jake Roberts and Mika Scott are looking forward to justice being served. But what they do not know is that there is a new player around who is following their every move and has a plan in place. Inspired by Lori, Jared Hamilton plans to play a deadly game of murder which ends with the death of Jake Roberts. In a race against time, Jake Roberts is ready to do whatever it takes to survive and apprehend Jared.

Like the first novel in this series, here too the author has laid down all the major cards for the readers to see. There is no ‘whodunnit’ game to play as the culprit is shown from the beginning. But the thrill lies in the chase and in trying to guess what the next step going to be. It is different from traditional mysteries and I love it.

Jake Roberts seems to have matured over the years and the author has developed him well. I liked his character more in this installment. He not only steps up to do what it takes to do his job, but also to fulfill a reader’s expectation His relationship with Mika Scott is another aspect of the novel that intrigues me. Then there is Jared Hamilton. If Lori Powers were a formidable opponent, Jared is even more so. I love the way each character has his/her own back story to help us understand them better.

Overall, this is a thrilling follow up to the first novel in the series. In fact, I liked this more that After the Evil.

Mind Over Murder by Cary Allen Stone is a part of the Jake Roberts novel series. Although I haven’t read the other books in the series, this one was easy to follow. Detective Jake Roberts takes custody of Lori Powers, a serial killer who had fled to Europe, and Roberts’ past lover. Roberts is full of conflicting feelings about the case, but there is little time to fret over them. A new serial killer is on the loose, obsessed with Lori and murdering Detective Roberts. Jared Hamilton is a genius, but has been constantly searching for ways to expand his repertoire of dastardly deeds. Lori and Detective Roberts provide the ideal challenge. Will Roberts manage to untangle the mystery in time to save Lori and himself?

I found Mind Over Murder to be a straight forward novel. I liked the changing perspectives, but I found the different tenses a bit jarring. There were times where the novel changed perspective mid-section, and I had to read back to figure out who it was, Jake or Jared. It was also unusual to me to have Jake’s sections in first person and Jared’s in third person. I almost wish the novel was from first person, to really get into Jared’s mind set. However, it was a good read, and the story kept on moving until the end, still leaving it open for a potential future novel involving Jake Roberts. Mind Over Murder by Cary Allen Stone worked well as a standalone, but I feel perhaps I might have had a better insight to Jake Roberts had I read the other books. Still, it was a solid novel and kept my interest.

Mind Over Murder is the next instalment in the Jake Roberts detective thrillers. It follows five years on from "After The Evil" where we met serial killer Lori Powers. Lori has finally been captured and is being returned from Europe by Interpol ready for her trial. Jake is part of the party at Atlanta airport who are meeting Lori.

Lori has a celebrity following of her case, she's top of the news broadcasts and a book has even been made of her life. A beautiful woman she causes many men's heads to turn.

Jared Hamilton has a copy of Lori's book. He's a hi-tec savvy genius, a loner, he's a hacker in his own class and a rule unto himself. With no need for money, no need to work, he craves a life of crime like an adrenalin junky. Well aware that a computer virus could have more power than a nuclear weapon, there are few security systems that Jared cannot breach. Yet even this power is nothing compared to how he feels about murder. Inspired by Lori Powers, Jared plans five murders with one big ultimate death.

A good thriller, I wasn't sure how the story was going to pan out with Lori however there is enough backstory if you haven't read the previous book to set the scene. A good pace which kept me interested to the end and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Lori Powers is back, but not the way you think. She's being brought to justice. Five years have passed and Jake is a little older and wiser now. He wants the books closed on her case for good. It took some time but Mika and Jake found Lori. Now they'd get the chance to put her behind bars. Jake has no idea there is someone watching his every move. Someone who wants him dead. The game will begin again with new players and different rules. Jake will do what he has to do to survive.

This book is raw and spine-tingling. You will be entranced from the first page. I fell in love with Jake in the first book about his exploits. He's a man's man and someone you can admire for all the right reasons. Exceptionally well written with characters you can relate to, this book will keep you enthralled from the beginning. It's not one you can read a chapter or two and put aside. You'll want to finish this one in one read. I recommend you read this one and all of the Jake Roberts books. You can't get any better than
this.

I found no issues with this one.

I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because I can't wait for more from ~Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~

The second instalment of the escapades and adventures of Jake Roberts is an excellent follow up to the first book, After the Evil. The detective is facing a very puzzling case of yet another serial killer who is leaving no clues behind. He finds that he has to turn to Lori Powers who had fled the USA after leaving a trail of dead men and now has been captured and awaiting trial.

I really like the authors' ability to touch on the human side of the character especially the emotion they feel and the psyche that drives them. He is a no hold bar writer and takes you into the dark side of a persons persona which leads to excitement, tension and a lust for revenge. A very easy book to read and follow.

Although this is the second novel involving Jake Roberts it can be read without reading the first as the author explains as we go through the previous history.

Another excellent crime novel and a must read for all fans of that genre. Again the only disappointment is the fact that you will finish the book quickly.

This is the second book in the Jake Roberts series. Once again Jake Roberts is after a serial killer. After Jake's involvement with Lori, the serial killer in the first book he is seeing too many similarities in the killings to not see that the connection is somehow there.Lori is in prison though and the new serial killer is just following in her tracks. Jake teams up with Mica once again as they follow the leads and the strange connections of Jake to the serial killer. This is another great novel by thus author. The story feels authentic and makes readers wonder if the author is an ex-cop, ex-criminal or just a great researcher. Whatever the case, keep it up! I can't wait to read the next installment of Jake Roberts' exploits.

I loved this book. I was truly shocked by the ending. Jake has an uncanny way of dealing with serial killers first Lori and now Jared. I am so glad that Lori was also in this book. Jared really put Jake through the ringer. It showed a side of Jake that made me want to be there for him. This author really takes you on a roller coaster ride with all the twist and turns. I am so glad there are 2 more books featuring Jake.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Here it is.

I loved this book as I did the first. Jack Roberts is just a normal guy who could be your next door neighbor which I think is kind of cool.
