God in the ICU

Rate this book
Dr Dave Walker was a successful anaesthesiologist with a special interest in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Disillusioned with God after a series of tragedies, he was living for himself and his work. But something was wrong. Although he was seeing people healed physically, their lives were not changed and it all seemed pointless. This set him on a quest to find a God who did not look on impersonally from a distance, as he thought, but was intimately involved in our lives. After a dramatic encounter, he started praying with his patients. Suddenly things happened beyond anything he could have imagined. Patients were healed miraculously, others experienced Jesus bringing comfort and peace and still others felt the power of God's love in the face of tragedy.
And in the meantime Dave was facing his own personal trials that tested his faith to the limit.
Set firstly in a South Africa transitioning into democracy from apartheid and then in the Muslim world of the Middle East, God in the ICU will take you into the drama of critical care medicine, the inner life of a praying, caring physician and, above all, the response of a faithful, loving God to the prayers of His people. Told with transparency, compassion and an honest look at the lessons we can learn from His dealings with us, you will be encouraged to trust a God who is as close as a prayer away.

"Nothing can shield us from the unpredicatble experiences of a fallen world. How we respond however especially to god will determine how to fix us "

Dr. Dave Walker is an anesthesiologist from South Africa. This book tells us the powerful impact of prayer in the lives of terminally ill patients in the ICU.

The interconnection between religion and Medicine was studied and discussed by many great personalities like William Osler, Freud, Moses, Comstock, and Lao Tsu. One of the biggest obstacles all these people faced was that any attempt to study and quantify religion's effect on Medicine was taken with suspicion by religious leaders and medical professionals.
"God is too wise to be mistaken, God is too good to be unkind. So when you don't understand When you don't see His plan, When you can't trace His hand, Trust His heart."

The author discusses many case histories of patients in this book and tells us how a compassionate doctor can alter patient's lives with timely intervention and prayers. Some of the experiences of patients mentioned will bring tears to our eyes.
"There were incidents from working in the Intensive Care Unit that lived with me throughout my career. These were cases where God had come through in amazing ways in response to prayer."

He tells us through multiple examples that miracles can happen for terminally ill patients if they and their relatives don't lose hope and pray well.

"I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live. (Deuteronomy 30:19)"

I opted to listen to the audiobook because it was read by the author. Working in the medical field, I found his book moving, touching, and written from the heart of a deeply Christian man.
As he spoke of his experiences both professional and private, I was moved to pray myself. I am encouraged to know that there are Doctors who still pray for and with their patients, as I have always prayed for mine. God blessed Dr Walker, and he shared that with others changing countless lives over years of practice and beyond.

I loved this book, and in a surreal way felt connected to the author in listening to him share his story and his Godly heart.

What a beautiful narrative Dr. Walker weaves as he shares his incredibly personal and powerful testimony as a praying physician. His journey takes him from South Africa to the UAE and China where he is able to see the clear hand of God in his work and personal life and calmly describes medical diagnoses and treatment with the same matter of factness as witnessed miracles and lives changed. Each story flows to the next and is hard to put down as you are eager to see how God is able to work in so many ways. It wasn't until finishing his narrative that the full weight of his story fell on me as a reminder and encouragement of how I should approach my career as a nurse and life as a praying wife, mother, sister and friend. In his conclusion, he states, "In God, there is always life." Even in stories that could be seen as hopeless, there is joy to be found. "While we are alive, and while we are in love with Him, the adventure continues."

RIP 4.1.25

When an Anesthesiologist started praying with his patients in the Intensive Care Unit, things started changing in his practice. This tale unfolds in the midst of South Africa transitioning to democracy. Definitely involves hi-tech medicine and highlights the fragility of a life hanging in the balance. The content involves the human touch who says he is trying to understand a the divine that in the ICU.

“The only thing that may protect us from all maladies is death. The space in between is living.”

Did not finish. I listened for less than ten minutes. Such a strange way to write a book. So many F words right off the bat. Not a book for me.

This rather short book was written by a South African anesthesiologist. Dr. Walker’s career took him around Africa, the UK, and the UAE. Early in his career, he had three family deaths within two years and didn’t have a use for God. But eventually, he decided that more than the body needed healing and began asking patients and their families if he could pray with them. This memoir is a collection of some of these memorable cases.

Some of them are of miraculous healings, but many are about healing hearts and finding peace and comfort. From our narrow human perspective, we think suffering and death are the worst things that can happen. But from a godly, eternal perspective, an earthly is a tiny blip in the middle of eternity. The separation of death is but minutes; suffering is a small moment and can be repurposed to refine the soul.

The recording is kind of rough—I was wondering if it was digitally transferred straight from cassette tapes, but I think it’s newer than that. You do get to hear his accent as the author reads the book himself. The book was pretty interesting overall and certainly uplifting.

What an awesome true story of what faith and prayer can do! As the author relates so well, you cannot put God in a box conjured up by our minds and anticipate the results of coming before Him to ask for His healing, His intervention. The one who prays does not know the entire situation, and he or she cannot know the past or the future as the Almighty does. All of these things, plus the flawed world we live in, play a role in outcomes.
Dr. Walker sees miraculous healings, people who live who should not have according to the evidence, and grateful patients and families who sense God's love in spite of what they see. But sometimes the wounded and sick don't recover. Nevertheless, lives are impacted for good in ways you might never imagine.
This is also the autobiography of the physician himself, who is forever changed in his own relationship with God and how he deals with tragedy in his own life.

I have always loved reading about the Lord answering prayers and spiritual blessings in the lives of the faithful. This is filled with just that. I stumbled onto Dr. David Walker’s book and am glad I did. I listened to an audio of it read by him. It was filled with amazing, uplifting, faith filled stories he experienced as an anesthesiologist. And hearing his South African accent was a plus. :)

A beautiful book of a life well lived. I like that it is not pie in the sky spirituality. He addresses the difficult things when God doesn’t answer like we want and navigates A genuine faith through it.

I enjoy this book. As a nurse, I’m fascinated with medicine and medical interventions. As a Christian I enjoy stories of answered prayers and God showing up. This book combines both medicine and Prayers and interesting ways God answers those prayers.

There may be “no atheists in foxholes”; there are certainly few in the intensive care unit of a hospital. However, for the same reason a recent Air Force chaplain was criticized for quoting former U.S. Military Chaplain William T. Cummings, many Christians are reticent to invoke the name of Jesus in a public hospital even in darkest days.

God in the ICU, by Dave Walker, is the story of one doctor who found the courage to pray publicly and privately over his patients and saw the miraculous efficacy of prayer.

Dave Walker wasn’t always bold in his faith. In fact, the story starts with a humble retelling of his first years as an anesthesiologist at a hospital in South Africa. Following a series of personal losses, Walker doubted God’s existence and, if there was a God, certainly doubted His character.

Like so many of us, Walker’s heart cried out, “How can a loving God let things like these happen?”

But that’s only the beginning. God re-introduced Himself to Walker in a very personal way. As he began to grow in his faith, Walker felt supernaturally compelled to pray over his patients. It started slowly, one at a time, then intercession became a habit. Not only did he pray quietly in the operating room, but he asked his patients personally if he could pray with and for them. He approached grieving and terrified family members, asking again if he could pray with and for them.

The first part of Walker’s book tells his own story of reawakening to the God of love, the God of miracles and the God who is sovereign over even the most painful circumstances. The last two thirds of, God in the ICU, tell a wide variety of individual stories.

Walker recounts supernatural, instantaneous healings as a result of prayer. He tells of finding and sharing the comfort of Father God in the midst of long drawn out illness. He describes how prayer transformed difficult relationships. Perhaps most importantly and most applicable to the reader, Walker tells how, through prayer, his own spirit was quickened to hear, understand and obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit, even when they seemed contrary to logic.

This book is much more than a good read. Personally, it created a hunger in me to learn to speak to God in such an intimate way. Walker is an excellent writer with unique metaphors and poignant descriptions. I couldn’t put the book down. It is remarkably entertaining, but simultaneous it reaches the reader on a much deeper level.

Walker’s book directs immense glory to God. He reminds us of God’s majesty in the fantastic creation of human bodies. Walker highlights God’s unparalleled goodness and mercy. He tunes our ears to God’s voice and our points our eyes to search for God’s good purposes in all things.

Finally, God in the ICU is a bulwark against anxiety concerning evangelism and intercession in public places. Walker proves that God is in our darkest hours, in the moments when we need intensive care. He cannot be banished, and it is only to our good that we acknowledge Him, praise Him and point to Him. God alone brings healing and God alone is our salvation. Let us take courage and follow Dr. Walker’s example boldly bringing God, through prayer, into every moment of our lives.

This book was wonderful. The author narrated his work, and his accent and pronunciations were charming. Not for the queasy, as some of his stories involved details of surgery and aspects of the body. I greatly appreciated the chapter on his lovely, kind wife, which was towards the end of the book. If you are a romantic at heart, stop reading/listening after you finish her journey; wish I had. (Reason for removing a star.) If you are going through physical difficulties, illness, or have lost a loved one, as I have too many times, I hope this book comforts your heart as it did for me.

“The journey started with the death of my brother and anger at a God I did not know or understand and from Whom I alienated myself, and ends with the death of my wife while pressing in close to a God I know, still do not understand, but have chosen to trust and love. In the first instance I found nothing but disquiet and dissatisfaction. In the latter I experienced a love and comfort that made the experience an exquisite anguish.”

So ends Dr. Dave Walker’s excellent book about how he saw God move in his time as a doctor. I loved this book, devouring it in basically three reading sessions and sending a copy to my mother for her to read (she was a nurse). Some of the reasons I liked the book:

1. It doesn’t just talk about the “triumphs.” One of the most moving stories is about a girl who got run down by the fourteen year-old son of a sheikh, whom the sheikh had allowed to drive his vehicle. She was without oxygen for ten minutes and she survived the car injury, but was in a sort of waking coma after that. Dr. Walker along with her parents and others prayed, and prayed, and prayed, for her, but God saw fit not to heal her. She eventually died. Dr. Walker is honest about his feelings:

“The story of Marinette was a source of pain to me for many years. Usually I had seen the hand of God in some way when I prayed. Either there would be healing, or an improvement or a manifestation of His presence. But I saw none of those.”

I will leave the lesson that God did teach him through his experience of the book to your own reading of it.

2. The very real power of prayer. Some of us are apt to be skeptical about the power of prayer, and Dr. Walker—being the rational doctor that most doctors are—was quite skeptical himself...until he started praying. This book is worth reading just to reinforce your trust that God does hear and answer prayers. Dr. Walker’s account of his very first attempt at praying with a patient and what happened makes for riveting reading.

3. Dr. Walker’s story of moving from a sort of deist to a faithful follower and prayer warrior of Christ. He starts practicing medicine and feels the nudge of God, but cannot figure out how to move closer to a God who seems so distant and unconcerned about his life (his brother and sister-in-law both die unexpectedly). He recounts the advice of a faithful couple:

“A couple prayed with me and suggested that I pray and read my Bible. ‘Maybe you are not allowing Him to intervene and guide your life.’ they said. ‘You seem very self-sufficient and confident of your own ability. Why don’t you try asking for His help even if you think you can do it yourself?’”

He follows their advice and well...read the book (please do read the book!) to see what God does.

Dr. Walker sums up what this book is really about quite succinctly:

“This book is a testimony to the faithfulness of a God whose ways are not always our ways, but whose conduct is always that of a loving, kind and intensely personal God; a God who loves to intervene when we relate to Him personally in prayer and obedience to His Word.”

“GOD IN THE ICU” by Dr. Dave Walker is the heartwarming story of a doctor’s eye-opening encounter with a miracle-working God. This inspiring book opens our eyes to see God in action and gives our faith wings to soar. We witness first hand what happens when a compassionate doctor and a powerful God join together to serve His hurting people. This is a gripping book that reveals powerful and discerning insights into God’s love and eternal purpose in a lost and dying world. As Dr. Walker narrates the triumphs and tragedies in the course of his life’s work, he openly shares how he finally came to understand the loving, powerful, and ever-present hand of God in his life, gently guiding him at every turn. He found that he could always trust in God’s loving kindness.

Dr. Walker’s prolific writing style reveals his transparent heart and details his own spiritual progress in his faith journey. In “God in the ICU,” we see the incredible power of prayer in real life situations, reminding us anew that God alone has the sovereign power to execute His wishes as He sees best. Dr. Walker is a striking example of how a praying doctor is used mightily in the hands of a loving God.
“God in the ICU” shows us that God is only a whispered prayer away. He is the Great Physician, who cares about us so intensely, that He comes as soon as we call. This deeply inspiring book is a highly resonant medical life story in which the Almighty God intervenes directly in real life situations to help patients face His Will for their lives.

In “God in the ICU,” Dr. Walker shares his faith with passion to show the everlasting love, eternal goodness and steadfast faithfulness of God. He trusted God wholeheartedly and courageously showed it to a watching world. This book illustrates how God cares deeply for each patient and uses the dedicated and committed physician to minister His love to them. It is the unique and extraordinary story of a Christian anesthesiologist and of the supernatural miracles of heart, mind and body that his patients experienced, as he prayed with them in the ICU.

Dr. Walker’s life mission was not just to help patients to heal but to bring God into their lives. This is an intriguing story about Dr. Dave Walker and the unique mission he embarked on when he asked God to heal his patients. I highly recommend “God in the ICU” to every reader who thirsts to see God’s healing grace in every page.

Dr. Dave Walker born in Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 became an anesthesiologist in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) who didn't want just physical healing for his patients, since we are all destined to die, but to transform their life through the power of God. As the Dr says in his own words,
"What was my real purpose in life?
Was I put on this earth just to save physical lives and make no permanent change to the quality of the whole person?"
So began my search for a God who is involved.. someone who touches hearts and changes lives from the inside."

The Dr would pray 🙏to a personal God who deeply cared for patients in car accidents, had 4th stage cancer, children poisoned, the sick and infirm.. many were healed miraculously, other patients had an experience with Jesus and felt peace in the face of death.
"God keeps us humble sometimes by not allowing us to see the end of his plan."

The memoir closes with Deuteronomy 30:19-20, "I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God."

I stumbled upon this book on Hoopla. The author is a Soth African anesthesiologist. The book is full of stories of God's amazing work in lives. I think the stories of when he was in UAE were the most interesting. He was bold to pray with everyone. One story of an Egyptian boy who had leukemia and was healed. Painful to hear the sad story of the Egyptian 8-year-old girl that was hit by a 14-year-old Shiek's son in a large SUV.

This guy really was/is a prayer warrior. Very moving book. He shared the victorious, miraculous stories and also the hard ones. I really can get over that last part about how his wife suffered with cancer, yet in the midst was so close to God and even was instrumental in planting a church among Sri Lankans in UAE. I can only hope I could respond like her if I was in pain, disappointment and knowing my time on earth was short.

The author read the book and I enjoyed hearing him speak especially because of our friendship with a South African couple.

I loved this book. This amazing Christian man tells of his love for God and God's love for him in such a humble way. I found it very uplifting and finished it with a very positive feeling about everything that happens in our lives, good or bad. I have suffered many losses during the last few years, a wonderful husband, a beloved friend, a beloved sister in law, my wonderful mother, a sister who has moved to the other side of the world. I prayed to God about all of them and it took me a long time to realize that it was God's Will that they should be taken from my life and it was not for me to question why. This book made me realize that we all have to face losses at some stage in our lives and that as long as we know that we have a Loving God keeping His hand on our lives, we will survive and come out stronger in the end.

There was so much to love in this book - miracles, lots of bible verses, Dr Dave’s testimony; honest stories where prayer didn’t lead to healings too.

However, as an edited/formatted book it was poor; the page numbers didn’t start until page 60! Some of the sentence formatting was poor and on at least 3 occasions two words were typed over each other.

I also think the book seemed rushed, where more detail and explanation would have benefited such as Dr Dave’s childhood and testimony; the ending/epilogue was also rushed, abrupt and didn’t show any skilled editing.

As a Christian I loved the stories speaking of God’s wonderful works but God deserves our best, which I don’t think this is sadly.

I recommend only as it’s 130 pages long but there are much better Christian autobiographies out there.

As you read, you may think, as I did, that God could have acted differently in certain situations. I have learned, however, that we never see the big picture. Our encounter with other people gives us a tiny window into a small moment in their lives. God knows what they have been through, what is yet to come and what thread in the tapestry of their lives is appropriate for that time. The common denominator is that each patient had an encounter with the living God. That encounter made a difference in some way. For some it set them thinking; for others it brought strength; others received physical healing and for others it was a welcome home. All, however, are testimony to a God who is not distant, but who cares and responds to the prayers of His people.

Interesting and inspirational

Dr. Walker presents his story in a journey that progresses from his fierce anger with God to his love and dependence on Him—all this encapsulated between the death of his brother and the death of his wife. What a journey! The transformation that occurs in his walk with and understanding of God are bookended by these events and filled between with a myriad of remembered moving and interesting anecdotes of his personal and professional life. I was eager to read each episode to the next and found myself quickly at the end of the book before I even wanted to be there. I highly recommend this book for pure inspiration and insights.

I listened to the free audiobook on Hoopla, and really enjoyed it! Dr. Walker tells a compelling story of a life raised with the idea of God, then forsaking Him, then truly finding Him again. Ultimately, the moral of the story is that God always answers our prayers, just maybe not the way we want Him to: But "His ways are better than our ways, and His thoughts higher than our thoughts." I really enjoyed that even through a life with considerable loss and hardship, the focus always came back to listening to God's voice, and following His plan for our lives. The frequent Scripture references were really nice as well. I would definitely recommend.

God is good!

God in the ICU is a very powerful and inspirational biography of a praying doctor. It takes us on a beautiful journey of Dave coming to a strong faith in God and then praying for others. It was truly amazing to read how powerful a prayer is and if we wholeheartedly believe and trust in God and put our life in His hands miracles can happen because God responds to the prayers of His people. We just need to trust in Him, only God can see the full picture even if we don’t understand why certain things happen the way they did.

I absolutely loved this read, it was emotional and uplifting, it left me with good feelings.
I highly recommend reading this fantastic book to everyone!
