All Kayla Cash has ever dreamed is to be a writer. Her quiet little house, nestled in the Rockies of Wyoming, is the perfect inspiration for her novels. That is, until a new neighbor moves in and turns her serene piece of property into a construction zone. Her tranquility is further rocked when she finds the one making all the racket is none other than the one that broke her heart, Sawyer Evans.
To Sawyer, Kayla is the one that got away and he can’t shake the feeling that moving next door to her is his chance to, not only make amends, but to win her heart again. He could only hope living next to Kayla in a place called Heart Mountain was more than just a coincidence.
Kayla must decide how to write the ending to her own story. Will she risk letting Sawyer into her heart again, or will he forever remain a rough draft?

A delightful story full of second chances with an exciting conclusion. An extra star for the ongoing conversations about strawberry tarts. And it's about an author, so that gets it an extra star too. A perfect choice for readers who love a good romance.

A Rough Draft is a sweet romance novel that I very much enjoyed. It was a quick and easy read that I didn't want to put down until I finished it. It's a sweet romance that mentions adult relations happening behind closed doors. The characterization of a school teacher that is an aspiring author and the unexpected cowboy that moved in next door was very natural and really helped me feel like I got to know the characters well. There was a wonderful backstory revealed throughout (not in a flashback kind of way, it was woven in very well). This was the first book I have read by Jennifer McMurrain. I was given an ARC and was asked to give an honest review. Being given the ARC in no way affected my review of the book, in fact, I loved it so much that I pre-ordered the ebook as well to support the author! This is a wonderful weekend and summer read!

I am a lover of love and a true believer in second chances. I hope you'll see the romantic in me and will enjoy this contemporary western romance set in the picturesque landscape of northwest Wyoming. I loved writing it and I hope you love reading it.

A Rough Draft

Great story. Kayla was a school teacher and a writer. She was writing books. Sawyer , she discovered moved next door to her house. He was her true love in college. She discovered him in bed with someone else and she never talked to him again. He awakened her with his hammering on a Saturday morning. She rushed over to get him to stop interrupting her morning sleep. This was when she discovered that this person was her long lost love from college. Things get interesting after this, enjoy.

Trite, predictable.

I read the Quail Crossings books first and found them well written. I expected more from this book. Feels like it's written by another person and not a good writer either. Found myself skipping ahead wondering if the content finally got better a few pages on. It never did.

I love this book! In anticipation of the second Heart Valley Romance coming out, I re-read it and was pleasantly surprised by details I had forgotten.

This is a gentle, fun read with humor and realism. I'm excited to read the next one!

Second Chance Success

I wasn’t sure about Sawyer deserving a second chance, but I’m glad that, like Kayla, I gave him a chance to redeem himself. I loved the book and am SO excited to read Sera’s story next.

Just finished A Rough Draft. Was really looking forward to this book because of it being a writer in Wyoming. I'm not in Wyoming though...yet. ;-)
Anyway, good pacing, good introduction of story elements that you knew were going to pop up later but weren't sure how, so kept you on the edge of your seat. I liked the characters, which is important for romance books.
And -- this is a compliment -- no times when I wanted to throw the book across the room for being unrealistic.
Maybe my only quibble was that there could have been much more scene building of the place in Wyoming, but someone who doesn't care as much about the state won't mind.
