Nightmare Plague

Rate this book
Many paths lead to Hell. To earn money for my little sister's treatment, I walk one of them.

Murderous nightmares ravage New York. And I, Lucas, am on the case. Yet the investigation leads nowhere and the Church pays little, which wouldn't be a problem if my little sister weren't sick. My family lacks the money to fund her treatment, so to help my sister, I agree to catch a rogue witch for a criminal syndicate. For two hundred thousand dollars, I don't ask questions.

And I should have. The killer nightmares create the perfect smokescreen for the supernatural world's monsters. Vampires, werewolves, angels, demons, a Hindu sect that is trying to resurrect their ancient Gods, the Vatican Inquisition, and even the Devil herself all take advantage of the chaos. On top of that, the rogue witch, being her magnificent self, binds me to help her escape instead of capturing her. And the Church forces me to help them solve the nightmare plague anyway.

But what wouldn't I do for my little sister?

This book follows the tradition established by Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, Neil Gaiman's American Gods, and the Benedict Jacka's Alex Verus series.

Thomas Green is a new author for me, and definitely one I will continue to follow. I can't wait for his future endeavors!

Life has never been easy for Lucas. His single mom works two jobs to support Lucas and his little sister. He does what he can to contribute. However, when his sister gets cancer Lucas will do anything possible to earn money for her treatment.

Lucas is a magic user. That is the fastest road to his goals. So Lucas packs his few belongings and leaves Texas and his much loved younger sister. In N.Y. City he sets himself up as a detective. Most of his jobs are for the Church, or more specifically, for one of the Church's secret societies.

The money just isn't adding up quickly enough though. Lucas takes as many side jobs as he can get. When he is offered a job that would cover the entire cost of his sister's treatment, he jumps at the chance. Lucas will do anything for his sister! Unfortunately he might literally have made a deal with the Devil!

Will Lucas be able to complete his assignment for the Church to end the plague of killer nightmares in N.Y.City, and at the same time satisfy his new employer? Or will his life be forfeit to save his sister?

Grab Nightmare Plague and try to outwit the Devil!

Out of all the books I have read recently, this has been the one that had me on the edge of my seat the most. It isn’t a book where you can guess everything either. Which is a HUGE plus for me. Some of the wording and sentences were a little off but the meaning was still there. This was truly an imaginative book that was a page turner. I recommend reading this book - you won’t regret it.

The characters are well developed, and it's easy to see how much time was spent researching religious historical facts, as well as theories. What stood out to me the most was the use of magic and how it was described in such vivid ways.

This is Lucas Johnson's origin story. A poor kid from Texas who found out he could do a few things others couldn't with magic - strike that - a lot of thing other people apparently couldn't do with magic and so came to the attention of powerful people able to pay him enough to cover his sister's cancer treatment. Anything that sounds too good to be true usually has a catch; maybe he should have looked a little closer before jumping into this one.

Desperation win out, and he finds himself deeply enmeshed in a world he never conceived of and owing 5 unbreakable promises each of which is at conflict with the others.

Non-stop action as he gets whipped into shape (literally) and learns what he is willing to do to fulfill his noble intentions.

If you haven't read any other Lucas Johnson stories, this books sets the stage. If you have, it is an origin story that gives a lot of back story such as Lucas' parentage, the beginning of his relationship with Evelyn, (although he actually met her in Demon Hunt) and a bit of his history with characters who show up again in later books. A different feel from other books as it is Lucas' coming of age and becoming. The potential is there - just starting to be realized at the end.
