I took this picture book out of the library, because it was one of the few books about Demeter and Persephone. I enjoyed this book! There are numerous versions of each Greek myth, but the aspect I really liked about this was when Demeter first began looking for Persephone. When the small girl approaches her, and Demeter is invited into her home, the Goddess appreciates being welcomed. In the aftermath of Persephone going missing, Demeter appreciates the family she finds inside even more, and blesses the sick son. I liked this calm, loving Demeter. She only grew angry when she found Persephone's belt, and concluded that the earth had stolen her. She was not irrational.

Besides the actual retelling of the myth, there was nothing special about the writing - but nothing bad, either. I was so-so about the art. I came to like it; there are black and white illustrations throughout, the darker images displaying Demeter's grief, or Hades' approach.

If you are looking for a different version of this Greek myth - that specific plot with Demeter is one I have not found before - this is definitely a good book to invest in.

This ancient Greek myth, illustrated by Ati Forberg is an illustrated storybook. The myth is about why winter comes to the earth, and how Persephone brings back spring each year. The illsutrations are light and almost abstract. The story is intended for older readers.
