Celebrate all of your favorite holiday traditions in this silly romp that's sure to make kids giggle (and want new undies!)—now in board book! There’s underwear for every day of the week and every month of the year. But come December, Pea proclaims to everyone who will listen that it’s his favorite time of the year! There’s underwear for all of the best holiday activities—playing in the snow, hanging the lights, baking cookies, and of course for giving as a gift! When Pea goes a little bit overboard, Broccoli is there to remind him what the season is all about. With the same snappy humor that made Vegetables in Underwear a hit with the preschool set, Jared Chapman’s latest makes the perfect stocking stuffer.
Hmm. I am a fan of Vegetables in Underwear. This holiday edition seems... unnecessary? Like, holiday underwear is not actually a thing, right? So this seems like kind of a stretch. They go through all the holiday things that you do like decorating, eating too much, wrapping presents, etc. Meh. Only for superfans.
First sentence: I’ve been waiting all year long...for holiday underwear season!
Premise/plot: The vegetables are back and starring in a new picture book by Jared Chapman. Their first appearance was in his Vegetables in Underwear. It was a gimmicky book designed especially for a certain audience that finds illustrated underwear hilarious. This book obviously is hoping that if regular underwear is hilarious, holiday underwear is more so. But is it?!
My thoughts: Is this book necessary? A thousand times no. But is it fun? I can’t really answer that question objectively. I am not in the target audience, and underwear doesn’t make me laugh. The best scene in this one comes when three baby vegetables stacked together pose as Santa. It turns out baby corn, baby carrot, and baby beet aren’t allowed to join in the holiday fun since they are diapered. But even at the best moments of this one there’s a feeling of so what?!?!
Pea has been waiting all year for holiday underwear season, which he explains to a very bewildered Broccoli. The exposition of different types of underwear for different activities culminates in the diaper wearing baby vegetables getting in on the underwear action.
This book was a missed opportunity in my opinion. Rather than a narrative, I was expecting a wacky celebration of holiday print underwear, which also would have taught young readers traditional Christmas vocabulary words. It does portray common holiday activities such as cookie baking, tree decorating, present wrapping, card mailing, and gift giving, which help young readers establish a social script. But I'm still disappointed that there wasn't a parade of Vegetables in Underwear with zany Christmas patterns. Illustrations of vegetables wearing underwear with no real attempt at plot is what made the original book so hilarious.
My kids laughed so much with two other books by Jared Chapman. One is called Vegetables in Underwear and the other is Fruits in Suits. So when I saw that Jared Chapman wrote a holiday book we had to check it out. My kids loved the illustrations in this book and tried to guess what each vegetable was. But also they loved how colorful the pages were and all the unique underwear was through out the pages. This book is silly and will have your kids laugh on every page.
I was hoping this book would be in board book form as “Vegetables in Underwear” is. My 13 month old grandson LOVES “Vegetables in Underwear” so I really wanted to get this one for Christmas. He isn’t quite ready for picture books yet in terms of durability. “Holiday Underwear” is colorful and fun. A nice addition to the underwear family of books.
This book gave me a chuckle mainly because how absurd it is. Underwear, including holiday underwear is for everyone. Big or small there is something for everyone to like. I can see lots of kids getting laughs not just from the story, but mainly from the great illustrations that go along with it.#Wintergames #teamreadnosereindeer +26
Oliver picked this as one of our December Scholastic Book Club suggestions. Unfortunately due to postal issues we didn't receive it until after New Years. But Oliver doesn't care about dates and times, he loves holiday stories. He also loves underwear. In the sense that he only likes to wear underwear in the house sometimes....anyway enough about the underwear. This was a very simple book that doesn't really go anywhere. I was more enjoying his reaction to all the vegetables in their underwear. The 3.5 is because he really liked it. Apparently there are other Veggies in Undies books, so I guess I'm off to the library tomorrow for more.
Apparently this is a series of titles about wearing different clothing items. We have all heard of wearing Christmas sweaters, but do you know about wearing Christmas underwear. Well here it is for toddlers. Perhaps I need to read the other titles in the series, perhaps my opinion of the series would improve. This as a Christmas story does make it with me.
I love kid books, especially silly ones. As my 110th read of the year, I decided to relax and enjoy Vegetables in Holiday Underwear, in which carrots, peas, squash and other veggies cavort in their underwear. Because...why not? I was able to end a miserable 2019 with some humor.
I mean, pretty sure this book is for kids who love potty humor and underwear jokes. Not the most well-written, but I'm sure it serves its purpose. And the underwear is cute. It's also funny to see how Chapman decides which vegetables have arms on the front or on the side.
Peas are my favorite vegetable and I like the fact that he was the one you used who waited all year. A cute story. I love decorative socks and luckily don't have to wait all year for new designs. Unique underwear can be very exciting and entertaining- turnip really turned out.
I found this and grabbed a copy for my 1.5 year old. Super silly, fun illustrations, and definitely a wacky (and pointless but fun) story. I have a feeling that my husband will enjoy reading it more than our daughter! 😆
Is this a masterpiece? No. Is it funny to read? Yes! Did my son enjoy it? Also, yes. Would I recommend it? Absolutely! Appropriate for ages 3 and up. Illustrations are cute, it’s a short and funny read, and I am giving it 4/5 stars ⭐️
I was so excited for veggies with wedgies to be part of this and I was so disappointed. The story really has no movement and it's hard to tell what some of the vegetables are.
My boys and I are big fans of this series and this new addition did not disappoint! Lots of smiles and giggles throughout the book. The babies are our favorite vegetables!
When the title says "Holiday," what they really mean is Christmas. There was one picture with a menorah but this is a Christmas book. It has cute, funny illustrations.
