I was enraptured with this book. There were so many aspects of this book that were new and well thought out. I really liked the push/pull between the main characters. It vaguely reminded me of the beginning relationship between Aria and Perry in Veronica Rossi's Under the Never Sky, although the plots and characters are different. Equally fun to read and read again though.

I really liked the good in characters in this book. Shalyrie was at her core, even from the beginning, ready to lay down her life to stop a war. One she had stumbled across and used as a pawn in.

Wonderful book. Wonderful characters. It was left open ended with a few unanswered questions at the end so I am hoping we find out what happens to her brother in the next book.

I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

Very much enjoyed this one. I loved how things started off so cute and innocent in the beginning, and then they took an ugly turn so unexpectedly. The only thing that bugged me was that the female mc CONSTANTLY Needed the men to save her. She was a strong and good hearted character, and quite the tough cookie, but it felt like the author's mind set
About women was still stuck in the 1950s. She had some bad-ass within her, but the author kept bringing her back down to being the helpless damsel
Who needed rescuing and protection. Some of the extra povs thrown in were a little weird and random. I wish the exchange of reciprocated love between Sinner and The girl who helped nurse the female mc wasn't written into the story, because Sinner ended up dying shortly afterward. (Pardon me for being too lazy to want to attempt to spell the characters' typical fantasy world, weird-ass names) The remaining several chapters after the intense big payback scene were a little lagging.
Criticisms aside, this book as a whole was well written, Full of twists and things that kept going wrong just when everything seemed calm. Everything tied together beautifully too. I didn't spot one plot hole or loose end. The lagging parts needed to be there TO tie everything together. My favorite part of the book was when that scuzzy, corrupt governor got his come-uppins. I had to read that part twice, because I enjoyed mentally watching his demise. Ha ha ha. Good book. I was very entertained, and I look forward to the sequel...

[Minor spoilers]

I mainly started reading War's Ending because I had some contact with the author through social media and she promised me 'clean fantasy-romance'. Well, she delivered!

I loved War's Ending and it get's a big fat 8/10 stars from me.
I would probably class it as a 'new adult' story, as some of the characters fit YA a little better but the political intrigue in the story makes me lean more towards adult.

First my favorite aspects of this story:
- The worldbuilding: I love the mystery surrounding the secretive 'horsemen' and how we learn about their culture and secrets along the way. A.J.Park has done such a wonderful job building a world that feels immersive, without infodumping. She sprinkles the information we need during the story and keeps hinting that there is more, keeping me hungry for it.
- The MMC (without spoiling his name). His personality and the way he treats Shalyrie, the FMC. It's quite possible that I loved reading his POV even more than Shalyrie's. His personality and how it's been formed by his background is so clear, again, without infodumps. I loved getting to know him, and seeing him struggle with his pride, empathy, pain and sense of responsbility.
- The descriptions. A.J.Park knows exactly how to describe what she wants you to see, without using too many words, which I believe is an important quality of a good writer. Because of this, the entire story feels immersive, independent of which POV it's written from.
- The theme of overcoming (racial) prejudice, of replacing anger and hurt with peace, and the fact that people aren't always what they seem, was a lovely side dish.

What I missed:
- Sometimes, at important moments, the story seemed almost a little too fast-paced. At the big climactic moments, I think I would have liked the story to linger for a little so I could enjoy them longer.
- Although I really did like Shalyrie, the FMC, and she has plenty of personality and stands up for herself, I had one thing that started to bother me a little as I progressed in the story: why does she keep getting into situations where she get's hurt and loses consciousness? I would have liked her even more if, in some of those situations, she wouldn't have woken up to have someone else solve her problem, but if she could have found a way out of the situation herself. A little less damsel in distress, and a little more 'I can fix this' would have made this even better for me.
- I also would have liked to see a bit more depth to the motivations of the antagonists besides the classical hunger for wealth, power or revenge.

Sexual content: none
Coarse language: none
Violence and gore: moderate (includes war brutality and torture, but without detailed descriptions)

In conclusion:
If you prefer real, healthy romance over toxic relationships; if you like your romance with all the feels but without all the smut; if you like immersive fantasy stories with new cultures and you enjoy a bit of political intrigue and war, and you prefer a story with multiple POV's, then I can highly recommend picking up a copy of War's Ending.

I can't wait to read the sequel!

This was a refreshing read! The characters were good and this author made me believe that her love interests really did love each other without ever really seeing the guys face until the end. For some reason this was also one of my hang ups on this book and toward the end the characters would keep updating the other about what had happened so it felt like I was getting a recap every page or other page and had to speed read though it. BUT I was still a fun read!

CW: "savages"

For what I read (about 10% of the beginning and skimmed much of the last third), it was good for a first time author. I feel like the narrative and set up is pretty standard for fantasy stories. The writing didn't reel me in but it didn't push me away either.
My issue and reason for dnf-ing lands in the subject matter: royalty checks on colony and finds colonizers are enslaving natives so the royal "good" colonizers must save natives (and themselves) from the "bad" colonizers. It comes off as white saviorism especially because the colonizers are said to be blond while the natives have dark hair and are called "savages". Even though I can't recall skin tone differences being explicitly mentioned, the explicit hair color difference is enough.
I skimmed more of the book, especially the ending, and it was still along those lines but it looked like the colonizers gave up the colony to the natives and started working on their diplomacy relations. However, the FMC (king's niece) and the native's ruler (MMC) fall for each other so the colonizers still have a lot of influence in the area but it's better than Dune or Pocahontas. It kinda reminds me of Avatar. As we see with these example, I know that these plots are quite common in fantasy settings, but it's important to identify where the impact of the plot can be very different across different cultures when the appearances of different countries and colonization is within the text.
Nitpicking about content further: how would Shalyrie know what a stable looks like if she's never seen a horse until now and the best comparison her people gave her was a big deer? AND this story is a lot of telling but not showing. For example, the readers are told constantly that this colony is doing great things but we don't see anything except an aquarium display of dangerous sealife and a bridge.

War’s Ending follows the story of a girl named Shalyrie who is abducted by masked horsemen while on a tour of her uncle’s kingdoms. With the help of a man named Kalleck, they piece together clues behind an assassination attempt and realize that, with a war in full force, Shalyrie might be the only one who can bring it to an end.

This book was very fast-paced and had one event quickly moving on to the next with lots of dialogue throughout. I would recommend this for YA readers who enjoy a bit of court (or kingdom?) politics, a dash of romance and fantasy, and lots of conversation to move the reader from one scene to the next without wasting much time.

As an adult reader, I would have enjoyed having a bit more description so I could imagine more of the time and place and characters, all of which could have been a bit more developed (just my preference). That being said, I think the positives of there being so much dialogue is that YA readers will most likely not get too bored with the storyline - so much happens in such a small amount of time that younger readers are sure to keep turning pages. This will likely be a good book to keep on the classroom shelves for 8th grade girls that enjoy a bit of fantasy, romance, and intrigue.

The plot, the characters, the scenery! Wow!

Right from the first chapter, I was drawn into this story. It is placed in a land far away and a distant time, yet so realistic. I loved how the story felt real, yet it was magical. There were no super powers, but the special, protected secret was something so realistic that it tapped into my personal love for mountains, good people, my family, and the truly magical things that are tangible.

The constant foreshadowing kept me very engaged. I was very excited throughout this fun book, anticipating what would happen next. I was so engaged with the characters that the story sparked my emotions as they navigated their trials and triumphs!

If you love the outdoors, interesting and diverse people, and want to ge lost on an adventurous getaway in your imagination, this book can definitely take you there.

I hope there will be a sequel!!

Shalyrie loves the excitement of visiting new colonies in her uncle’s kingdom, and Newport is beautiful. But Shalyrie was not expecting the excitement to include attempts on her life and the tragedies of war. Finding fear and the unknown on every side, can Shalyrie find a way to encourage and foster peace?
I was quickly sucked into the story as I started reading, and I mostly stayed engrossed for the rest of the time I followed Shalyrie and her friends through their battles. At one point, the story seemed to get a little repetitive with several consecutive attempts on Shalyrie’s life, but then the story moved on and became engaging again. Overall, I took pleasure in reading how Shalyrie and her friends dealt with the challenges they faced and how Shalyrie would not abandon her beliefs, even as keeping them became more difficult. We could all be a little more like Shalyrie.

Left behind in a different country to explore while her uncle continues on his journey to talk to other leaders Shalyrie believes she is safe. However, when she is abducted and taken to another community she is left to try to figure out why this is all happening. She learns that her captor can speak her language and finds herself in a journey to prevent wars and bring peace to all lands.

I was gifted this book in exchange for a review by @ajparkofficial and I am very thankful for this opportunity. When it comes to genres I always shy away from fantasy (nothing can live up to Harry Potter in my book) so I was a little uncertain when it came to reading this one. Overall it was a good book full of different realms and adventure. The characters developed as the story progressed and it was very well written. The one thing that I didn’t enjoy as much as I would have liked is that the book as a whole was very repetitive. But, I am a sucker for a good romance and a happy ending! 3/5⭐️

An enjoyable read with lush, well-structured world-building, I found WAR’S ENDING full of memorable characters and an intriguing plot. The writing suffers from time to time with repetitive dialogue and a few over-hashed plot points, but for a debut novel it’s quite good. The romance is a major element, and develops well without being too mushy. It’s refreshingly sweet and clean.

While this is the first novel of a series, it stands well on its own. The pacing is pretty steady, though I did grow impatient with the heroine constantly being wounded and rendered unconscious. My favorite character was easily Kalleck, with Sinnar next. There’s a lot of beautiful description and intriguing questions the characters must explore. I’m curious where it will go from here!

The heroine and hero of this tale are excellent role models for those who must struggle with the perfidy of erstwhile allies in the world. It is written with young adults in mind, and there has been very little trimming for brevity or balance.

I mainly objected to the amount of suffering that the main characters fall into, though in truth it is never unrealistic. Perhaps the original was written as a serial, where emotional pitch had to be kept high throughout.

I think it's an exciting tale for those who are not trying to shield young readers from excess violence. The villains are thoroughly bad and the good characters plentiful by the end.

This book is surprisingly good! The main characters are vivid and entertaining, and the central villain to the novel is a subtle but twisted xenophobe that makes you look forward to his eventual downfall. Shaylrie is a strong female character who strives to do what is right, even though she spends much of the time recovering from her various injuries and afflictions. I found the Yalkur culture especially interesting and well-developed. I especially appreciate how "clean" the novel is, without gratuitous language and sexual situations. I am not sure how a follow-up novel could top this, but I look forward to seeing how it turns out!

This is a great book. I just left a review on amazon that I hope will be published soon. Fantasy has never been my genre and I really only ever liked one fantasy author. Well, now I like TWO. Because A.J. Park is a gifted writer. Not only were the characters multi-dimensional and real, the setting also had a very authentic feel to it. This may be YA but I think it is a book for anyone and you should try it even if fantasy is not your go-to genre. You might be surprised how much you like it!

I accidently download a sample of this book when I though I had the whole story, and by the time it cut off in chapter 5 I was hooked and bought the full version immediately. It did not disappoint! I've really been enjoying no/low-spice fantasy romance recently, and I thought this one was excellent. It is a little on the violent side (particularly in terms of violence against the heroine), but the story and characters are so good!

Can I say wow! I started out reading and found it was was one of those books that you can’t put down. It draws you into the story wanting more as you read about Shaylie and what she goes through. I don’t want to give away the ending but if this was a movie, I would be left wanting more and I am!
Hoping for a sequel.

Great read!
I really enjoyed this book! The characters are well developed. The story is interesting and has good plot twists that kept me reading--I couldn't put it down! There are so many YA books now that have adult content, so I was very happy that the book was clean and appropriate for a YA audience.

Story could have lost 100 pages

This book was so over-written. There were so many times the story wandered in circles, repeating information over and over. Author and editor… your readers are not stupid. They will not forget information. When you repeat things you insult your reader.

Wow! What an epic journey! I loved how the main character was so kind even from the beginning, and how she grew in strength and grace throughout the book! There was obviously more of the story that wasn’t told yet, but this part of the story had a satisfying ending. The romance was clean and uplifting, but there was violence, as expected when the book was about war.

I was not expecting a fast paced book but that is what I got. This book moves the story forward at a high rate with lots of politics, war, and just a small amount of romance.
If you enjoy court politics, girls who take charge, and a kingdom to save books you will really love this.

11% and I'm done. I tried. I wanted to like it. I wanted to support a relatively new author, but I just can't. 11% of being told there are all these great and wonderful things being done, theres so many things happening that made this place wonderful.. so many things. And the people are so excited to share them... So you would think we would see some of those great and grand things, right? Nope. We get to see a bridge. Thats it. Just a bridge.
Our main character has the intelligence of a rock.
There are an extraordinary amount of page breaks that are extremely jarring. Conversations will be cut off right in the middle by a page break. Like the author didn't know how to Segway into a new topic or finish the first conversation in order to start another so PAGE BREAK. Aaaand new scene. The internal and external dialogue was repetitive. And if I picked up on repetition within the first 11% I can only imagine how much more of it there is in the rest of this book.
I tried to give it a bit of leniency being a YA. I tried to even tell myself, think middlegrade. Maybe that will help. But I've read middle grade that holds up better than this writing. Alas. I tried. But I won't be trying again.

This book was great. At the start I feared the writing was a bit mature; however, as the story went on it grew on me.

I do think the story was a little long winded in some areas but the book was still very well written and the story was one that touched on a girl becoming her own woman and learning about the world around her.
