Move over Harry Potter, Simone LaFray is Here!

“Excusezmoi,” Simone LaFray and the Chocolatier’s Ball by S.P. O’Farrell is a masterpiece of espionage fun told by Simone LaFray herself. This fast-paced mystery keeps readers on their toes. All the while, Simone’s distinct personality reveals an exciting plot; one’s mouth is watering over the desserts described in their Parisian Patisserie.

O’Farrell wraps up most of the loose ends, only leaving enough unknowns for a lovely sequel setup. His well-rounded characters, layered plot, and smooth delivery certainly merit every award this delightful book has won.

Simone LaFray and the Chocolatiers' Ball was such a fun, light read. It was exactly what I needed right now. I actually found myself thinking about it (and chocolate) numerous times throughout the day and eagerly looked forward to sitting back down with it.

Simone is a special young lady who helps her father and younger sister run their family patisserie in Paris, but doubles as a secret agent on the side. I really enjoyed reading about her life, especially in the shop. O'Farrell's descriptions of of the shop itself were marvelous. So much so that I could almost smell the chocolate and treats. My mouth certainly watered at some point and I could picture everything perfectly. Simone is helpful, intelligent, and super observant. An overall joy to get to know!

And then there was the plot itself. I loved the intrigue and mystery. It was fun to wonder and guess who was behind the problems at the shop. (I won't get into spoilers, but let's just say it was not who I thought it was!)

O'Farrell's writing is top-notch. I felt fully immersed in the story and at one point, when something goes terribly wrong for Simone and her father (again, no spoilers!) I truly sympathized for them and was actually on the verge of tears. To get the reader to feel that level of emotion takes great skill, skill that O'Farrell has most definitely mastered.

I HIGHLY recommend Simone LaFray and the Chocolatiers' Ball! 5/5 Stars!!

S.P. O'Farrell has written a heartwarming story about twelve-year-old Simone LaFray, who works as an espion, or spy in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as does her mother. The reader can easily recognize the double life Simone lives because she watches everything and questions everything going on around her. When not trying to locate "la Volpe Rossa, known as the Red Fox, who has committed heists all over the world, she helps her father at LaFray's Patisserie located in France and according to Simone, her father is "quite possibly the finest chocolatier and pastry chef in France". All of the family's recipes are kept in a 73-page, hand-written recipe book written by Simone's great-grandfather. It's no wonder there are those who would love to get their hands on it.
It is when unexplained things begin to happen at her father's shop that the mystery comes into play. Who is responsible for the missing recipe book? Why are the pastries her father making turning out badly? I won't give out spoilers, you will have to read this wonderful book to find out.
Simone LaFray and the Choclatiers' Ball is about a family, who stand together. A story that is full of adventure and mystery. O'Farrell uses the five senses to draw you into the fun and exciting world of Simone LaFray. You can actually visualize Paris, and smell the incredible desserts at the Patisserie. Good job S.P. It will be my pleasure to read this book to my grandchildren when they are older.
What a delightful read and Simone will win your heart over with her intellect and her keen observation. Simone is also very real. As a twelve-year-old, she struggles with all the things a young girl wrestles with. Simone is a great role model for other girls and boys her age
I can see why S.P. earned so many five-star reviews. This book is a winner! I loved the story and highly recommend it to anyone at any age. 5-stars

C'est manifique, bravo!

It has been a long time since I have read a middle grade mystery novel, but I thoroughly enjoyed reliving the charming trip through Paris. The author’s vibrant, flamboyant description of the Parisian scenery, lovely shops, parks, delicious Patisserie with cakes and an abundance of chocolate, are simply enchanting. As a children’s novel, I found the twelve-year-old protagonist relatable, delightful, and endearing, with her quirks and all. As the story evolved, it captured my attention and hooked me in until the spectacular ending.

I would definitely recommend this book for adolescent readers that love espionage and suspense. I plan to purchase a hard copy for my young niece’s 10th birthday. Thank you, Mr. O’Farrell, for providing such an extraordinary and charming story. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Lovely children's adventure

The book was beautiful. Simone is trying to solve a mystery and that is the crux of the story. But that is not all. The story deals with a father-daughter relationship and it has been weaved very well into the story.
The description of Paris as seen through Simone's eyes was lovely. Enjoyed it.

As someone who has never been to The City of Lights, I appreciate the way Mr. O'Farrell describes Paris in such a loving way, as though it is a character in the story. 12-year-old Simone LaFray is an unusual child, with an exceptional intellect, a unique POV, and a fascinating life; she is a spy in training! This engaging story is perfect for precocious children and adults of all ages!

I read this book aloud each night with my three daughters and we just finished. My first impression is ‘what a delightful story for kids’, but that would be selling it short. It is just as enjoyable for adults as it is for children. My 13-year-old also loved the book!

Not only were we all thoroughly entertained each night, but it was also the subject of much discussion and debate after each session. This was due to the mysterious elements that left my girls pleading with me to read the next chapter, even when it was late at night. They liked trying to solve the mystery alongside Simone.

Simone is a very likeable character. Not only is she exceptionally bright, but she is also unique – even a bit of a loner. Add to that her secret talents and there was something for each of my daughters to admire and relate to.

I personally enjoyed the detailed setting descriptions of Paris, the integration of French and German, and all the supporting characters. Simone’s father, sister, best friend, and mother are all well written and come alive as the story unfolds. Additionally, the ‘villain’ of the tale is not black and white, which I enjoyed. It was fun discussing these nuances with my girls and listening to what aspects stood out to them. We will definitely be reading the sequel.

If you’re looking for an entertaining plot, lovable characters, intriguing conflicts, and a satisfying conclusion, give Simone La Fray and the Chocolatiers' Ball by S.P. O’Farrell a try. You won’t be disappointed!

This is the kind of book I enjoyed reading when I was younger and that made me enjoy it now. It's written from the point of view of a little, clever and shy girl, the kind of character that makes you feel special when you're little. You can read the plot in the description and other reviews so I'll give my personal opinion about the things I enjoyed the most, without spoilers:
- I loved the level of detail this book has. The descriptions about Paris and the patisserie are beautiful. It's nice to read a book for children/teenagers with this kind of vocabulary. It describes every place and makes you feel like you're there.
- Simone is a great character to look up to when you're young and is cool that she's shy but brave at the same time, that she doesn't need to change.
- The general idea of this kind of girl, and of that age, having this secret exciting life is fun and thrilling, I can see kids reading this and dreaming with being her.
It was a really pleasant read even though It's not directed to someone my age, it was very captivating and entertaining.
I also really liked the art of the cover! It's beautiful.

Simone LaFray and the Chocolatiers’ Ball is a wonderful story for all ages!

Featuring 12 year old Simone who lives an exciting life as a secret agent, a baker, an older sister, and a sometimes singer, we follow our heroine as she struggles to balance everything and find out who she wants to be in the process.

Delightfully written, Simone is a character I feel that many young girls would instantly love. I know I did even as an adult. I couldn’t put this story down, and I can’t wait to read more about Simone in the future.

Kudos S.P. O’Farrell for bringing such a magical tale to life!

Engrossing from start to finish!

This is the kind of book that just smacks you in the face with its cleverness straightout of the gate, sinking its hooks into you and not letting go until you've turned the final page. Currently, it is 1:04 am and I, a grown woman of 37, have been reading under the covers for over an hour so as not to disturb my husband's sleep while desperately needing to KEEP READING. It's just that good.

What a charming book! Like a lot of people, I love well-written, family-friendly children's books that can be enjoyed by both adults and kids. This book definitely fits the mold.

Simone Lafray is a 12-year-old girl torn between following in her mother's footsteps by becoming an international spy (she's actively working with the same secret organization as her mother) and stepping out into the spotlight as a lover/singer of opera. These two things are at odds because, as a spy, sticking to the shadows and blending in is integral. Being a world-renowned singer will "blow her cover."

Simone lives in an apartment over a quaint Parisian pâtisserie which is the legacy of the LaFray bloodline and is now owned and operated by her father, a master baker and chocolatier. With her mother often gone on top-secret missions, Simone is left to help care for her younger sister (who is drawn to the spotlight even more than Simone), and help her father around the pâtisserie. With the spare time she has, Simone practices her spy skills and works with the aforementioned secret organization, as well as spends time with her vivacious friend "The V." It's an unusual life, but one she loves.

When an art-stealing-fraud-exposing master thief named la Volpe Rossa ("the Red Fox") wanders back into town with possible revenge in mind, her father gets invited to the elegant Chocolatiers' Ball, and mysterious accidents start happening around the pâtisserie, Simone is called into action. Can she stop the Red Fox and also help her father win the top prize at the Chocolatiers' Ball in order to save her beloved family business? Will she unravel the mystery behind the curious accidents in the pâtisserie? One should never doubt Simone LaFray, master spy in training.

If I had children, this would be right at the top of my list of books to read with them. It's exciting, fast-paced (yet gives plenty of world-building details to immerse the reader), and warms the heart. Who doesn't love mystery, spies, and sweets?

Fantastique! Merveilleux! Remarquable! Génial!

SIMONE LAFRAY AND THE CHOCOLATIERS’ BALL by S.P. O’Farrell (@SPOFarrell3) is a delightful blend of adventure, mystery, suspense and fun. Our main character, Simone LaFray, is an exceedingly sharp and prodigious character. She uses her astute, detail-oriented mind to mirror her spy mother and save her father’s patisserie. The Chocolatiers’ Ball serves as the venue to catch a thief in this charming read, nestled in the cultural wonderland of Parisian streets.

Simone is a soul of the shadows and finds comfort in the covert. She is a strong and whip-smart character with a brilliant mind and a great sense of humor, reminiscent of Hermione from the Harry Potter series or Matilda. Her performative sister, Mia, is her opposite and relishes attention. The dichotomy between them highlights Simone’s inability and disinterest to fit in like a “normal kid.” Her spy job raises her above and beyond the ordinary, and we see the world through the intriguing lens of her genius.

The delectable glamor and delicious ambiance of France permeate every page of this sensory escape. A virtual vacation awaits the reader with O’Farrell’s marvelous story. He enlightens Simone and her world with vivid prose, a quick-witted plot, and an atmospheric glow. With a Disney-esque magic and a Sherlock Holmes attention to minutiae, this is a book all ages can enjoy — I know we’ll see Simone’s story on the big screen someday very soon.

Twelve year old Simone LaFray has reached a point in her life where she's at a crossroads. Does she hide and sneak in the shadows, taking the reins from her mother and become a secret agent (A career she's already showing promise in), or step into the spotlight like her sister, Mia, and sing opera on a stage, exposed to the world?

While she's figuring it all out, she's working at her father's Parisian Patisserie, a business that has been in the family for generations. But where there's family, there is inevitable drama. So, when Simone is put out in the field on a case at the same time as her father's secret recipe's are stolen, Simone tries to solve both cases and believes them to be related.

Typically my reading lends closer to adult than mid-grade, but I thoroughly enjoyed this fast paced story that lent itself to smart characters and mature situations with ease and reliability, easily making me forget the main character was not even a young adult.

Perfect prose, neither over-done, nor under-written, I'd recommend this sweet story to readers of all age groups and genres.

Thanks to the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book is just so cute and is a great mix of genres. The book is a mystery children's book that takes place in France and is all about chocolate. I love it! The book is easy to read and I'd definitely advise this book to kids in my classroom, it's highly suitable for the younger ones. Everyone of age 10 and above could and should enjoy this book! I'm a little shocked that this book only has 4 ratings on Goodreads...

A great book with an unique mix of genres that any person of the age 10 and above could read. Teachers and parents could read this book to younger children as well. The book overall is just sweet, feels like you are in Paris and has this sparkle of mystery. I'd definitely read another book in this series.

A delightful middle grade mystery.

This middle grade novel is great for young readers who like girl heroes. Simone is a quiet, easily-overlooked kid, but that's exactly how she likes it. Underneath the quiet facade, Simone is a whole lot more, and you get to see layers of her personality as the story progresses. Mature beyond her years, she helps in her father's pastry shop during the day, and at night, she follows in her mother's footsteps as a spy in training. She's given an assignment to find and stop the illusive Red Fox, a thief who steals counterfeit artwork. While Simone is searching for clues about the Red Fox, other mysteries surrounding her family's pastry shop arise. One of my favorite things about Simone is her incredibly detailed observational skills. This book is light and fun, with enough mystery to keep you turning pages. Looking forward to more Simone Lafray mystery-solving!

Delicious & Intriquing

This is one of those books that makes you want to slip within the pages. A deftly crafted father/daughter relationship is woven into a masterfully crafted mystery.

Simone is a charming 12 year old girl, balancing the confusion of being a clever kid, with her family legacy, & a covert life!

Mystery is around every corner & keeps you guessing as you keep turning the page. Definitely a book you can't put down easily.

This story reminded me of why I fell in love with reading. In fact, I've reread this book in anticipation of the next installment. Can. Not. Wait!

Simply a delight!

Reading this book was such a treat! I enjoyed the vivid imagery of Paris and the sweet nature of the main character. Once the action gets going, this is the kind of book you cannot put down. It sticks with you when you're not reading and beckons you to finish it. While it's aimed for a younger crowd, it's suitable for adults as well. A perfect book for parents and their children to enjoy together.

If you enjoy fast-paced mysteries, clever protagonists, and, of course, chocolate than you will love Simone LaFray! Highly recommend this fantastic book!

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but I was immediately thrown into 12-year-old Simone's life as she focused on each and every detail in her everyday life. As Simone tackles the confusing world of being a young woman she also has to tackle her training as a secret agent. When her family's patisserie is the target Simone has to step up and protect her family's legacy. Will she solve the mystery before her father's reputation is ruined?

An enjoyable mystery with the lovely addition of chocolate and patisserie. Looking forward to the sequel.

A Delightful Story with Engaging Characters

What 11-year-old detective Flavia de Luce (in the mystery novels by Alan Bradley) is to a 1950 English village, 12-year-old spy Simone LaFray is to modern-day Paris, France.

Precocious Simone lives a double life, working in her father’s patisserie, looking after her younger sister, and hanging out with her best friend, while concealing her activities as an agent in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which also employs her mother who is out of the country on a case in the novel.

“Simone LaFray and the Chocolatiers’ Ball” is S. P. O’Farrell’s debut novel, but there’s no evidence of that as his writing style in clean, clear, clever, captivating, and creative. His characters are engaging, and his descriptions of the patisserie, with its delicious smells, and the sights and sounds of the streets of Paris pull the reader into the story. We struggle with Simone as she endeavors to figure out how seemingly unrelated incidents fit together while, at the same time, trying to navigate life as a not-so-typical 12-year-old.

This book is listed as a children’s novel, but it would be an enjoyable read for any age group. Well done, Monsieur O’Farrell. I’m looking forward to Book 2 in the series.

This was such a great book! It’s an amazing story-& it made me so hungry for sweets! The description of the food in here was so descriptive I could almost smell & taste each piece! Lol Simone is very mature for her age. She is a very unique 12year old. She is usually unseen by the rest of the world, & that’s how she likes it- she’s a covert agent with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A notorious thief returns to Paris seeking revenge on her mother, who is also an agent. Her dad is a chocolatier & proprietor of a world famous patisserie. Unforeseen & potentially devastating events ensue, & she’s left questioning everything-even her dad. Her double lives entwine, & what a ride it was! I loved seeing Simone come out of her shell a little, & her grow even more as a character. Her observation skills are on point! The author did such an amazing job w/how someone like her would be in every situation where observation was natural to her. I loved her dad, & even her attention loving little sister lol I loved the employees at the patisserie-& they were small side characters..but they were great lol So much suspense & action packed into this little book. It was a fast read, & the inability to put it down made for an even faster read. If you like food, Paris(also described so well!), & action you will love this. So looking forward to the next book! Amazing cover as well of course!💜

This story is marketed as a children's book, but it’s a great read for all ages. Due to the advanced intellect and maturity of the main character, Simone, it’s easy to forget that she’s a child. She’s one of those kids who I would consider to be an “old soul,” and O’Farrell makes it work every step of the way.

With a mother who is a member of the intelligence ministry in Paris, Simone’s gifts are recognized at a young age, and she is recruited to the agency to begin training for her future as a spy. However, while Mom is away on assignment, a world-renowned art thief shows up in Paris, setting the intelligence community on edge and forcing Simone into a more active role as an agent.

There are many twists and turns right up until the very end that will keep you guessing as Simone navigates life between helping to care for her little sister, working in her father’s famous bakery, and trying to crack the case that has the spy network stumped.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good mystery. The only problem I had with Simone LaFray and the Chocolatiers' Ball was that it ended. Thank goodness there’s a book two!

As a fan of mysteries, chocolate, and Paris, I knew this book was a must-read. Simone LaFray is a 12-year-old secret agent whose current assignment to stop an art thief becomes personal when her family is targeted.

S.P. O'Farrell expertly immerses us in both beautiful Paris and the family patisserie. I really enjoyed seeing Paris through Simone's precise eyes and all the descriptions of delicious chocolates and pastries. The mystery was well-plotted and left us with the perfect amount of intrigue to entice us to read the sequel (which I will!).

But possibly most of all, I appreciate how the challenges Simone faces encourage her to do the things that make her uncomfortable, that take her out of her comfort zone of blending into the background (as any good spy should do).

A great read for kids and adults, this book is a delectable confection! J'adore Simone LaFray!

Immediately, I found this book to be incredibly interesting and a really fun read for a middle-grade book! Simone LaFray is a cross somewhere between Harriet the Spy, Artemis Fowl, and Sherlock Holmes, she notices everything, misses nothing, and is fantastically intelligent! Simone is an agent for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and following in her mother's footsteps. The setting of this book is Paris (I've been reading a lot of books set in Paris recently), which is a beautiful backdrop for such a lighthearted story. Simone's family owns a patisserie, which is absolutely the dream! It's a great place for the story to occupy, with so much beautiful imagery included in the narrative, so many French street names, and an independent, headstrong character in Simone who navigates the city with ease.

This is a short book, but it is packed with fun themes, charming characters, and adventurous espionage! I would recommend this to all middle-grade readers looking for a quick spy novel with a strong heroine! I loved this book from start to finish and I am so glad I picked up a copy for my collection!

Chocolate, Paris, and Intrigue

Fast paced, delightful story about a 12yo girl who in addition to helping with child care and her father’s chocolate shop happens to be a spy in her spare time.

Simone lives life on the edges and likes it like that. However, she’s an astute observer of life around her. When her mother is out of town and things in her father’s shop go awry, she steps up to save the day.

A quick read that will leave you smiling.

A Delicious and Charming Coming Of Age Story

I haven't read a middle school mystery novel in quite some time. Simone LaFray and the Chocolatiers' Ball is a charming book and thoroughly enjoyable at any age. It follows the life of Simone LaFray a young girl living in Paris who is following in the footsteps of her often absent spy mother, while supporting her father as the head baker and Parisian bakery. The author’s captures the heart and soul of the City of Lights along with the delicious Patisserie with cakes and an abundance of chocolate. Its a delicious and charming adventure. The main character Simone is so relatable and engaging that the book draws you into being part of the story.

I would highly recommend this book for adolescent readers that love espionage and suspense. Bravo, Steve O’Farrell, for providing such a delicious and charming coming of age story.

Reading this book made me want to visit Paris and eat chocolate. Actually, the book provides an imaginative visit to Paris through the eyes of Simone LaFray, our narrator who, with keen observation and intelligence, has been brought into the secret agent ranks of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Because of Simone, we get to see such wonderful places as the Eiffel Tower, Musee d’Orsay, and the Grand Palais.

There’s another Parisian location you may not heard of yet: LaFray’s Patisserie. Famous for its confections, helmed by LaFrays for several generations. Simone’s father is now the chef, and he’s a whirlwind in the kitchen. O’Farrell delights us readers with the sights and smells of the shop so well that you can easily envision yourself in the kitchen, reaching out for a treat to enjoy.

This book is a treat. As we follow Simone’s adventures, we learn of her thought process for which move to make next. We learn of her tender love for her family, her desire to help them, her wish to not stand out in a crowd (such as her sister Mia likes to do). She’s a capable spy, yet she is open to lean on more experienced agents for their wisdom.

Simone’s life is thrown a surprise when intelligence arrives that a famous thief is coming to Paris and may try to steal a painting from a museum. Agents from the Ministry are on the case, and Simone is asked to join in the effort to stop the thief. I won’t tell more about the plot, as I don’t want to give any spoilers.

Simone is a delightful character, and I had fun reading her adventures.

This book, set in a patisserie in Paris, is aimed at 10 to 11-year old’s, but that didn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying it, in fact, with a main character who is a little bit different, plenty of mystery and lots of chocolate; I would have loved to have read this as a child.

Simone LaFray is not your average 12-year-old girl. She prefers to blend into the crowd, to see everything, but not to be seen; for Simone is an undercover agent and a pretty good one at that. Following in her mother’s footsteps (she is a top international spy) and with the backing and assistance of the ministry, there are always plenty of mysteries for Simone to solve, as well as looking after her little sister Mia and helping her Father in his patisserie. Who is the Red Fox and why is he back in Paris? Who stole the ancient recipe books from her Father’s patisserie? What has suddenly made her Father lose his culinary perfection?

Things come to a head at the Chocolatiers’ Ball, a prestigious event that this year will be showcasing her Father’s work, but with sabotage and theft hanging over them, what must Simone do to save the day?

I loved Simone’s character and enjoyed her daily life in Paris, from strolls in the park to helping out in the patisserie, to working undercover in the art galleries. Her attention to detail, the way her eyes expertly sweep a room and mentally take everything in; calculating how many people, who is acting suspiciously and who is genuine, was matched only by the attention to detail in the author’s descriptions. There is a lot that makes Simone unusual and different, including her love of routine and precision, but these were the things I enjoyed most about her. As a children’s novel, her quirky perfection will I’m sure strike a chord with those kids who maybe don’t feel they fit in with the norm.

This first book sets the scene perfectly and left me wanting more from the extraordinary life of Simone LaFray.
