If the Slipper Fits

Rate this book
How many lives can one shoe change?

A beautiful girl runs from the Crown Prince of Lorac at a ball, and a glass slipper is found on the palace steps in her wake. The king proclaims that the shoe will be tried on the foot of every girl in the kingdom in order to find her. Whoever fits the slipper will marry the prince and become a princess.

But the only girl who fits the slipper is not the girl from the ball.

Cindy, a soot-covered cinder girl, the only person in Lorac to fit the slipper is taken to the palace to meet the king and the prince. On their first meeting, she and Prince Adam take an instant disliking to one another. To their dismay, the king's proclamation is binding, and the prince and the cinder girl are forced into an engagement that neither of them wants.

They now have one month to get to know one another before their engagement is formally announced, and their fates are sealed. Both Cindy and Prince Adam are determined to find a way out of their predicament. Soon, they are thrown into circumstances that force them to trust one another to survive.

Unbeknownst to them, a spy working in the shadows of the palace, and the people he works for, pose a threat to not only them but possibly their entire kingdom as well. If the Slipper Fits is the classic tale of Cinderella as you've never seen it before, where fairy godmothers are a myth, dreams don't always come true, and people are more than they seem.

Kendra has always loved stories. Reading them in books and watching them in movies was not enough. From the time she was in first grade, she was already telling her own.

She truly fell in love with the art of writing in middle school, where she first wrote a full-length manuscript. From that time until now, she has been honing her craft, eager to improve her skills with each new endeavor. Her first novel, If the Slipper Fits, was self-published in 2019.

Born and raised in California, she lives in a small town North of Sacramento. When she’s not cooking up adventures in her head, she loves to read, draw, and drink more coffee than is healthy for a normal person. She still loves to enjoy stories, especially seeking them out in a cozy book store, or curled up on the couch with her husband.

Synopsis:
This is a Cinderella retelling unlike any other I've run across. Cindy is not the dazzling girl who enamoured the Prince and lost a glass slipper at the ball. This fact; however, doesn't seem to matter to the King when Cindy is the only girl they could find who fits this unique footwear.

Cover Art:
The cover is beautiful, elegant, and matches this world extremely well.

Review:
This story is full of light, and it was very fun to read. Cindy is independent and headstrong, sometimes to a fault. Even though the world has a fairytale, colonial feel to it, Cindy is definitely not the classic fairytale heroine and quite frankly, Adam is far from the charming Prince. Crae does a lot of nods toward the Cinderella tale, deviateing in refreshing ways as well as poking fun at the timeless classic.

Reason for Rating:
I loved the sense of realism in this story. Crae grounds all the magic that was in the classic Cinderella with logic. The fiary godmother's magic wand was transformed into a measuring tool. Things like that, I absolutely loved. I found myself slowing down as I read to savor the story longer.

Overall:
This story is a clean, fun read, full of adventure, and sweet romance. Plus, it's always nice to help support indie authors!

A must read for all lovers of strong female characters and genuinely built relationships

THE best Cinderella retelling I’ve ever read! It’s so refreshing to read a retelling that is creative and isn’t the same old story told in different words. I LOVED Cindy and Adams banter with each other and how well they compliment each other in all points of the story. Their growth was so natural and the characters had such depth and I loved them and loved this and definitely recommend. I’ll be reading again soon!

I read this book at the tail end of 2020 so I could easily pass it off as just a nice bit of escapism from the somewhat depressing time, but it was more than that. It was a classic concept made much more interesting than many other versions I’ve seen and read before. I liked the twist at the end about who was really behind the plot to take Prince Adam’s life. The strong female character in a Cinderella story gave me Ever After vibes, but not in a way where I felt like it was directly copying the adaptation. Instead, it seemed to be inspired by the spirit of the movie in the same way that it’s inspired by Cinderella, but ultimately its own book. It’s been a little while since I read it, so I won’t really go into too much more detail but I will say that at times I couldn’t put this book down!

Very enjoyable twist on the Cinderella tale

Cindy never went to the ball, but she is the only one whose foot fits the glass slipper perfectly. The problem is, she doesn't want to marry anyone, especially not a selfish, spoiled, ill-mannered prince.

Cindy is more than an ash covered girl. She is full of fire and steel. She has mental wounds that make her scared, but still hopeful to find a safe place for her mind and heart. She feels trapped in her fears.

Prince Adam is angry with his father, the King, for forcing him to marry the filthy soot covered nobody. Adam has been sheltered his whole life. He has never been allowed to leave the palace, he has no friends, and his father is emotionally distant. He feels trapped in his gilded cage.

Cindy and Adam end up on an adventure that tests their strengths and pushes against their emotional barriers. They both get a chance to grow, and frienship -or something more- grows between them.

The story seems cut and dry from there, with the prince about to marry his cinder girl. Plot twist! There has to be a villian, and there is, but then there are the twists that shed light on who is good and who is bad, and that is what pulls the whole story together.

There is a bit of violence in several parts of the story. Nothing extreme, but perhaps not for anyone younger than 11. I don't recall any cursing. The romance is very clean.

There were a few editing errors, such as missed words, or extra words, but not enough to detract from the story.
