With his father in a nursing home and his mother needing support, former Great Smoky Mountains park ranger Lincoln Vailes moves to the bayou town of Eternal Springs, Louisiana, to become a police officer. Recent college graduate and eager social worker Jade Laurent has also moved there to try and right the wrongs of an abusive past. But someone is running her car off the road and pointing guns in her direction. As Lincoln investigates her case, he uncovers ties to big-city gang warfare up north that appears to be making its evil way down south.
“I love boxing. I love Hallmark movies. I love fishing. I love scrapbooking. Nope, I've never fit into the boxes people have wanted to put me in.” ~Robin Caroll is definitely a contradiction, but one that beckons you to get to know her better.

A heart felt tale about a women who overcomes tragedy in her life and relies on her faith to do it. The story is lightly inspirational, filled with hope and enduring love, as well as showing the capacity to forgive. The book stands on the ideal that good can come from bad happenings. The main character is a firm believer that things happen for a reason and if a person opens their eyes and looks, they'll see what God's greater purpose is, or at least accept what comes. No new thematic insight is presented through the expression,"Everything happens for a reason," but sometimes it's nice to be reminded.
Flaws: A cookie cutter plot that isn't very suspenseful. It runs it's course and the outcome, or 'bad guy' is predictable. The religious references are basic and hinge on reading more like a Sunday school lesson than an actual epiphany. The setting is completely neglected and vague. Given that the story takes place on the bayou, I was disappointed that the author didn't utilize this mysterious place more and tie it in with the tale. Instead, the characters were simply moving about and honestly, it could have been in any city. The setting was insignificant and I felt this was a terrible waste. Even though this was suppose to be drawn from personal experiences, I felt little emotional connection and wasn't that invested. I should have had more sympathy for the characters, but this was merely plot with stuff happening. Also, repeating scenes and recapping by the characters is unnecessary. I don't want to read the same thing over and over. It wasn't that astounding the first time and once was more than enough. I found myself skimming pages, which is a bad sign and something I rarely do.

Action-packed with lots of tension. I loved this read. Having fostered many children, I and my wife are familiar with the Department of Social Services. Jade Laurent is my type of Social Worker. She cares about the welfare of children. I stayed glued to the pages of this story. When not reading it, I thought about the book. Very good. I look forward to the next one in this series.
Suspense, at a roller coaster pace, drags you through the book as Lincoln races to protect Jade and other victims. The subject of gangs, Alzheimer's, domestic abuse is seen throughout the book. I am impressed with the use of the Lord's word as help in different situations. This book is recommended for those who like romantic suspense.
Excellent! Brought tears to my eyes. Enjoyed the story and the characters. I must admit to having it all figured out beforehand but still enjoyed reading it.
This book smacked me upside the head from page 1 and I read through it so quickly it was such an intriguing story…I couldn’t put it down. Carroll is a master at writing stories and the characters are extremely interesting.
I found them very complex and yet still very pleasant to read, and even amusing at times. I learned a lot about gangs and found that aspect of the novel very fascinating. As someone who comes from a domestic abuse background, the underlying message about domestic abuse as well as social work in general hit very close to home for me. I was really touched by how hard Jade Laurent seemed to work, and found it very endearing how attached she became to the case, even though she wasn’t supposed to.
While there was a strong Christian theme with this book, I didn’t find it overly drowning in it either, so it didn’t bother me a bit. It was actually very nice to read a story with such a strong setting in gang violence and domestic abuse, but yet still had a very religious presence. I enjoyed the scripture quotes at the beginning of each chapter. I also really enjoyed the Spanish influence Carroll added to this story, and while normally that can be hard to enjoy because most authors don’t bother to translate what they put in, Carroll did translate. So after the Spanish words/phrase, she would always tell what was said. That made it a very enjoyable read, without needing a English/Spanish dictionary handy.
Carroll did a fantastic job with her descriptions. It made the reader really “feel” the story, and helped me imagine like I was right there inside the story with the characters. This is one of my most favorite reasons for reading in the first place, I thoroughly enjoy when an author is descriptive and it allows me time to escape from the real world and enter the story world.
This was my first Carroll read and I enjoyed her writing style so much I will definitely read more from her! Even though this was book 2, I didn’t have a clue. It reads very well as a standalone novel and I had no idea there was anything linked to it that came before until it was time to write this review and noticed it was book 2. I was definitely not disappointed and recommend the book to anyone who enjoys realistic struggles with suspense, drama and even a little bit of romance thrown into the mix.
LincolnVailes, is home. Back in Louisiana where his parents live. He has returned home to help his mom with his ailing father. A minister all his life, now Lincoln's dad is facing the horrible disease of Alzheimer's. It is hard to see him not in his right mind. This illness has definitely taken its toll on the Vailes family, Lincoln's father is not himself, raging in the disease, Lincoln's faith is tested to near the breaking point, and his poor mother is tired.
Jade Laurent (Santiago) is a social worker fresh out of college, with a mission to save all abused wives and children. Her past gives her a passion for the abused wives, and she is serious about her job. Perhaps too serious, allowing herself to become emotionally and personally intangled in a ongoing case.
Someone is in the small town of Eternal Springs Lousiana, on a mission to do harm to Jade, and Lincoln, as a police officer on the small town force is determined to find out who it is and why they want to hurt her. What he doesn't expect, however is to loose his heart to the fiesty young social worker. Now it is personal, whoever is trying to hurt Jade has to be exposed. Will exposing that person lead to Jade's death? Will she survive the terror that has been planned against her?
This book was an attention grabber. I started this book late at night, my first mistake, and ended up reading into the wee hours of the morning. I had to finish it. I could not put it down. Robin Caroll, who I already enjoyed reading from her previous book Deliver Us From Evil (which Lincoln Vailes was also in that book) once again proved herself as an author with the ability to keep me on the edge of my seat. Throw in the fact that she is a fellow Arkansan, and she moves right to the top of my list of favorite authors. Definitely a book to read this summer! 320 pages $14.99 US 5 stars.

Officer Lincoln Vailes came to the small town of Eternal Springs, Louisiana, to help take care of his ailing father. What he never expected was to be dealing with flooding in the aftermath of a hurricane or for dead bodies to start showing up left and right.
Social worker Jade Laurent has secrets in her past that make her even more passionate about helping the battered women and kids that her job brings into her life. Because of her past, she doesn't have room for a man in her life, not even the handsome officer who keeps showing up in the nick of time.
When the violence surrounding Jade escalates, she and Lincoln are thrown together in the fight of their lives. Will they survive? Will they fall in love?
Robin really brings the reader into this book by using really strong descriptives about the setting. One of my favorites was when she describes the humidity as making the hero feel as if his dress suit is a wetsuit. Yikes! She does a great job of making you feel you are *there*, right in the story.
The author also keeps the pace of the story fast - but not too fast - so that the reader is drawn into the action. I really had a hard time putting this book down. The mystery/gang storyline is woven in throughout the small-town storylines in a way that keeps the reader guessing and interested.
The love story in this romantic suspense was deftly handled and draws the reader in to that part of the book. Overall, this is a quality read. Recommended.
"Fear No Evil" is a Christian romantic suspense novel. It's the second in a series but is essentially a stand-alone novel. You don't need to read the first novel to understand this one, and reading this novel first will spoil only the romantic outcome of the first novel.
The characters were likable, complex, and dealt with realistic struggles. The two main themes were gangs and domestic abuse. The suspense was created by physical danger to several of the characters and stress from work problems and family illness. Some setting, gang, and job details were woven into the story which helped to bring it alive in my imagination. There were some Spanish words used, but typically they were brief phrases that were then interpreted in the character's thoughts.
Many of the characters were Christians. One main character struggled with trying to be in control of her life and realizing she wasn't, and the other struggled with his anger at God for letting his dad (a pastor) get Alzheimer's Disease. There was some praying, and God brought a fair amount of (quoted) Scripture to the characters' minds to answer their questions when things seemed their worst.
There was no sex. There was one explicit bad word and a minor amount of "he cussed" style bad language. Overall, I'd highly recommend this well-written, suspenseful novel to those who like romantic suspense.
I received an electronic review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
What a story. Jade is a Social Worker and her background that led her to that field is very interesting. Abuse of wives and what they go through, how people's lives are affected by it, and the strength of Jade's character were so beautiful. Yet her brother Carlos chose a different life for different reasons. A look into gang life. If you read this you will do everything you can to keep a child out of gangs. Lincoln is dealing with his Dad who was a Preacher suffering from Alheminer's. I have had to deal with listening to how this terrible disease affected my Mom for three years. The last 2 1/2 months of her life were a living hell. My Mom did not get a Nursing home who was humane to her in her last days. So reading this brought back memories I am still dealing with as my Mom passed away January this year. Then Jade is run off the road and hits a tree. I was beginning to wonder if author was writing my story as I hit a tree in 1997. I could so relate to that too. This book will grip you from beginning to end. I read it in three days. Your faith will increase as you realize how we can all deal with circumstances beyond our control. I felt like I had been to a revival when I finished this book. I truly loved the scripture at the beginning of each chapter. Read it as is goes with the chapter as well.
Lincoln Vailes changed careers and location so he could be near his parents because they need him as his father faces his last journey through a disease so difficult to understand, but he can’t change how he feels about God’s apparent desertion of this father who had dedicated his life to God’s service.
Jade Laurent believes God brought her through a violently abusive childhood – which ended with the deaths of both her parents and the desertion of her beloved older brother – so she could become the perfect social worker, the one who could understand the needs of victims and solve the necessary problems.
Both discover, as Jade becomes the victim of multiple attacks and Lincoln tries to solve the case, that though God does not necessarily work in ways they can understand, He is always near and caring for them. They each find a renewed faith in His plans, and together find a joy neither of them had imagined possible.
Caroll opens a window to two hearts and allows us to watch as they wrestle with God through their darkest fears and find that in His hand there is no evil that can overcome. Though I had the plot and characters figured out before long, the story was well-enough told to keep my attention to the last page.
Fear No Evil by Robin Caroll is the follow-up to Deliver Me from Evil. Lincoln Vailes is recovering from both a gunshot wound that damaged his knee and a broken heart from his best friend Brannon marrying another man. He's left the forest service to work as a police officer in Louisiana in order to heal his wounds and be with his father who is deteriorating from Alzheimer's in a nursing home. When a series of strange murders happen in the small town, Jade Laurent, a social worker who tends to get too involved with her cases, seems to be connected to them all. Lincoln and Jade have to figure out how her past has caught up with her while exploring their feelings for each other. The two have great chemistry in each scene as they fight and then can't stop thinking about each other. I was a bit disappointed in the plot about Jade's past; the ending was broadcast from the very beginning. But there's a strong message of faith and learning to trust in God, no matter how bad things appear, and Jade is a terrific heroine. Hopefully the next book will be back up to the quality of the first.
Posted from http://bookvisions.blogspot.com Fear No Evil is a crime/mystery novel set in Louisiana. I have not read the first book in this series, Deliver Us From Evil, but this book is perfectly fine as a standalone.
Lincoln Vailes is a likeable character as a Smokey Mountains park ranger turned Eternal Springs police officer. Lincoln’s faith is being tested as he tries to accept the Alzheimer’s disease overtaking his father, a former pastor. Jade is a new social worker helping abused woman and children, but her past comes back to haunt her in the form of gang activity.
Just locating the story in an interesting area isn’t always enough. Having grown up in Louisiana, I would have appreciated more description of the sights, scents, and feel of the area. But the mystery story is interesting and also has a light romance.
I especially appreciate that the main characters are men and women of faith, and the book contains scripture intermingled with the story. You will, however, see the end coming from five miles away! Even so, it is an enjoyable read.
I found this story interesting. Jade is a young social worker who is trying to make a difference in the world after her own experience in life. She really puts her heart on her sleeve and we learn a lot about her through out this whole ordeal. Then, there is Lincoln, he use to be a park ranger and quit to move closet to his parents. He is now a police officer of the small town in Louisiana where the story takes place. Lincoln is trying to make sense of what is going on with his father having Alzheimer's disease and his faith is tested through out the book. One of Lincoln's cases involves Jade. It starts off with one of Jade's clients in trouble and they think the bad guys are them. Are they really or are they after Jade? It is humorous at times to see how Jade and Lincoln interact with each other. This is a great mystery to read with a hint of romance.
FEAR NO EVIL by Robin Caroll is a inspirational crime/mystery novel set in Louisiana. It is the follow up to Deliver Us From Evil but can be read as a stand alone. It is well written with twists, turns, depth and details. It has faith, gang activity, light romance, murder, evil, Alzheimer's and its effects on the families, terror, on the edge of your seat drama and mystery. The characters are easy to follow, strong, has faith, a park ranger turned police officer, and a social worker who takes her job seriously. If you enjoy mystery, drama, small town drama and sweet beginning of romance you will enjoy this one. This book was received for review from Net Galley and details can be found at B/H Publishing and My Book Addiction and More.
Robin Carroll’s Fear No Evil is a story of finding hope in pain and strength in weakness. The characters in this novel show us that we have the choice to overcome or be overcome. The world is full of challenges and adversity, and it is how we face them that determines who we are.
Be prepared for a book that will make your blood boil and tears flow. I enjoyed the complexity of the characters and how they had so many layers — some of them good and some bad. Finding these allows the reader to uncover what drives the characters and their choices. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a story that goes beyond an entertaining romance/mystery. Fear No Evil will inspire you to make a difference and stand up for what is right.
Robin Caroll solidifies her reputation as a writer of stellar romantic suspense with Fear No Evil, an intriguing tale of the inescapable tentacles of gang warfare and those who stand courageously in the face of violence. Displaying her versatility by using different pacing to Deliver Us From Evil, with equally satisfying results, Robin reveals the damage wrought by past trauma experienced by Lincoln and Jade and their resulting life choices. Complex characterisation, palpable attraction and heart pounding action remain hallmarks of Robin's writing and make Fear No Evil as an essential addition to your bookshelves. Write faster, Robin!
Tangled webs of deception are skifully woven into this dramatic and vivid story. Small town living is considered a safe haven, but the unthinkable often lurks around the corner.
The writing has a good flow and is easy to follow. The two-sided story will open your heart to truth you wish you didn't learn, for this fiction could easily be someone's reality.
Fear No Evil is filled with passionate characters who take their jobs to the limit and beyond. Visualize the chaos, feel the fear and watch the struggle for survival as evil slithers into Eternal Springs. 5 Stars
This was a great follow-up to Deliver us from Evil. Secondary character in that one was the primary in this one; Lincoln has moved to Louisiana and become a police officer to be closer to his ailing father. He is soon deeply involved in a hurricane and double homicide, with ties to gangs in Philadelphia. Of course there is a beautiful lady social worker in distress; someone wants her dead or seriously injured and Lincoln has to find out just who that could be.
Third book in this series, Shadow of Evil, involves a secondary character from Fear no Evil. I am looking forward to reading it.
Plot: Lincoln has transferred to Eternal Springs to be with his sick father. While there he meets Social Worker Jade. Sadly Jade is finding herself a target a lot and needs help finding out who and why.
Review: Really great book. Its hard not to love Jade and Lincoln they are great characters. The plot was absolutely wonderful and the end was bittersweet.
Side Note: I wonder why this isn't considered part of a series when In the Shadow of Evil we follow Maddox. Also apparently (although I haven't read the book yet in Deliver Us from Evil its about Brannon.
An intense thriller with a strong spiritual story. I did not want to put it down until I got to the last page. You will remember Lincoln Vailes from "Deliver Us from Evil". Lincoln Vailes was formerly a Great Smoky Mountains Park Ranger with his best friend Brannon. His father, a preacher, was diagnosed with advanced Alzheimer's. Lincoln decided to be close to his Mother and Father in Louisiana. He became a policeman, met Jade, a Social worker...and the story begins ..
Fear No Evil got off to a heartrending and explosive start, but slowly fizzled a bit throughout. The book was still good, it just didn't end up living up to the bar the author set with the beginning scene. There were many things I enjoyed about this book, such as the main character, Jade, her strength and compassion...
I appreciate the Christian aspect of the story, but the so call suspense lack its mark for me.
Its a fine book and the gang background did intrigue me, but the execution just wasn't for me.
I figured out who was after Jade by the middle of the book. And was slightly disappointed that the ending felt anticlimactic for me because of it. Maybe I'm a paranoid person and have trust issues, but like dude. I had some expectation for the President of a gang and it went all down in the end.
This is a fantastic read. Jade and Lincoln are a beautiful example of a couple that leans on the Lord and each other in the midst of a bad situation. Carlos...redemption is an incredible thing from the Lord.
I thought I had this story figured out but then the twist comes and it is well worth it.
Jade and Lincoln worked well together to start the downfall of a gang. It was nice that Jade and her brother,Carlos, found each other after being separated as kids. Very good story, but I did have the bad guy figured out before they were revealed.
Thanks Ms. Carroll, for the exciting read. The setting was just great and the characters were wonderful. You did an amazing job. Would recommend this book to everyone.
