Featuring evocative and stunning color photographs of contemporary Tokyo, this book brings together the images of an exciting new photographic talent, Liam Wong. Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, Wong studied computer arts in college and, by the time he was twenty-five, was living in Canada and working as a director at one of the world’s leading video game companies. His job took him to Tokyo for the first time, where he discovered the ethereality of floating worlds and the lurid allure of Tokyo’s nocturnal scenes. “I got lost in the beauty of Tokyo at night,” he explains.

A testament to the deep art of color composition, this publication brings together a refined body of images that are evocative, timeless, and completely transporting. This volume also features Wong’s creative and technical processes, including identifying the right scene, capturing the essence of a moment, and methods to enhance color values—insights that are invaluable to admirers and photography students alike.

There's something I say a lot when I'm talking about the cyberpunk aesthetic:
Cyberpunk is just Asian cities.
I mean, think about it. Neon reflecting on rain-slick streets, towers of glass and steel where men in suits drink tea and make business deals, tiny bars and remnants of pre-industrialized world tucked away in alleyways, Chinese characters everywhere? That's just Tokyo. And when I posted about getting this book on Facebook, someone commented how she always associated those traits with Taipei, so that just goes to show. It's just Asian cities.

But damn, I still love the aesthetic.

I've been following Wong for a while on Twitter, and when I heard that he was going to put out a book of his Tokyo photography, I leapt on it. And now that it's here, it's perfect. Wong is famous for being a video game art director, but also for taking photos of Tokyo, mostly after midnight, and doing some editing and color work on them in the service of making them look as cyberpunk as possible. He freely admits in the book that he's inspired by anime like Akira and Ghost in the Shell and by movies like Blade Runner and the various works of Syd Mead. He's deliberately playing up the neon-and-rain cliché, but if there's a place for it, it's Tokyo.

My favorite photo is probably Blade Runner Vibes, taken at 00:49:51 (every photo has a timestamp, hence TO:KY:OO), because I love the tiny alleyways and small streets and the cramped shops that exist in any large Japanese city. Hiroshima, where I lived, had them too, and there was nothing like hearing noise, turning down an alleyway, and finding an open-front yakitori or ramen stand with ten seats, half of which were taken by people who obviously went there every night. Lonely Lantern, taken at 00:32:33, captures that sense of being about to come out of the rain and cold and into whatever it was you've been smelling for half a block. Midnight Diner, taken at 00:46:12, is another notable example and is also unique for actually having plants! Tokyo isn't entirely an urban wasteland with no greenery.

Another favorite is Ghost in the Shell, taken at 03:43:20, which has no people in it at all--a rarity for Wong's photography--but instead depicts the kind of urban clutter and tangle that's vital to the cyberpunk aesthetic. Cyberpunk has to feel lived in, it has to feel mixed up and worn down, the classic urban jungle. Tokyo is a great city for that, for turning into an alleyway with stacked up boxes and wires overhead and the hum of window air conditioners all around, bathed in a neon glow.

Ono-Sendai, taken at 03:01:39 and named after a company from Neuromancer, is one of those photos that everyone thinks of when they think of Japan, where with the motorbike and neon on the left and the torii leading to the shrine on the right. The degree to which Japan is a hybrid of ancient tradition and modern technology is pretty overstated, especially in daily life, but it is true that you can walk down a street and see someone in kimono or find the entrance to a shrine, most of which are quieter oases in the midst of the urban hustle and bustle.

My phone background is a bunch of cherry trees in bloom at night, lit up by neon lights, over an urban canal. I can't judge.

I could just keep linking photos, and a lot of them are available on Wong's website, but that misses the descriptions of the circumstances or the way Wong took the shot that are available in this book. If there's a flaw, it's that a lot of photos are centered on people, and the two-page spread means that the person is in the spine of the book. But that's a minor quibble, and the rest of the book more than makes up for it. I preordered this back in September and it was worth the wait.

My plans were ruined and I won't make it back to Tokyo this year, but at least I have this to make up for it.

This is an absolutely beautiful art book! The photographs are simply stunning and are like a modern day Edward Hopper or neo noir in tone. Liam Wong is a true artist, of that there is no doubt.

As a photographer myself, seeing someone who is not a photographer yet, but an art director who understands composition, start and grow in photography was fascinating and enlightening. Liam Wongs sense of tone, mood, and style is top notch and his eye for the sublime, the things just on the edge of the 'attention-grabbing' are exactly the things I look for and want to see to understand the world.

It took me to a real world that does exist (Japan) and then another world within that that doesn't (Liams perception of it).

Also made a great gift for my best friend.

4.8

I'm pretty sure I've been following Liam on Instagram from the beginning. His style drew me in because of the use of colors and because his photos seem to capture the magic of Japan. I've been able to chat with him a few times and he seems to be a real down to earth and nice guy. I even joked with him about when was he going to come out with a book. He responded with a sneak peak photo of the book! So I was super excited and happy for him when his crowdfunding campaign started. I bought a copy and patiently waited for it to arrive many months later. It ended up showing up in time for my birthday. The book turned out better and bigger than I thought it would be. I wasn't aware he was so busy capturing so many photos of Tokyo.

Liam used to work as an Art director for a major gaming company and was sent to Japan often. During the nights, he would go out, explore Tokyo, and take pictures of life after dark. His photos were mainly street photos of people, streetscapes, and building architecture edited to have a futuristic appearance. Just so you know, night photography is not easy. Having to take photos with very little light, trying not to use a high ISO that adds noise to your photo, and capturing fast moving subjects is a tricky balance. He basically stated that he never knew photography before he started this project. So it's extra amazing that he learned and advanced so much in a short amount of time. It's been great to see his style grow and flourish into what defines his photography today.

I gave the book a 4.8 because some of the photos seem flatter and less dynamic than I remember them being online. Some of the details in photos were washed out by just flat color. This could be because the photos were edited to be displayed on the web and not in a printed book. This could also be because he was experimenting with making the photos look like an illustration, as he mentioned in the book. I just don't remember them looking so flat. The other reason for the 4.8 is because most of his photos have a subject in the center of the photo, but the book signatures are so thick, that it is hard to view the whole picture when it's spread across two pages. Next time make smaller book signatures to allow people to fully see the full spread photos.

This book is a must for anyone interested in either Japan or photography. It isn't just a compilation of images, but a collection of actual moments captured by Wongs eye. He focuses mainly on night photography and presents Tokyos infinite alleyways in atmospheric lighting. His skill truly shows when looking at the images in a larger, print format. Taking pictures at night is extremely difficult as you are constantly looking for the perfect exposure, but his images are consistently sharp and clear, showcasing the neon-lit illuminations beautifully.
This as well as the cinematographic feel truly makes Wongs work stand out amongst others. The quality of this book is amazing and it is a real eye-catcher on my shelf. It is now one of my favorites in my collection and I highly recommend it.

I still remember the first time I came across Liam Wong's Tokyo photography on Behance: overwhelming fascination. I thought to myself, what is this? How, and why is this Tokyo so different from the mainstream Tokyo on the travelling brochures? While it's different, it is also familiar, somehow... like a fleeting dream of a distorted faraway city. Like... yes! Blade Runner came to mind.

I then proceeded to follow the author's IG page, a while later learned that a crowdfunding campaign was on, and received a copy earlier this month. The author is quite active and friendly, he replies to comments and directs and that makes me a happy fan.

This book is beautiful chronicle of Liam Wong's atmospheric, moody, almost cyberpunk photos of Tokyo. His photography is stunning, and this book reproduces it so very well. Great color, nice ink coverage--everything you'd expect from a top-shelf photo book.

I also appreciated the insights he shared throughout the book and a little bit of behind-the-scenes info at the back of the book.

It's worth noting that this book was designed by the talented Darren Wall, who runs http://vol.co/ and this book was part of their initial crowdfunding effort for the book. The design is gorgeous and utilizes the right amount of restraint in design to really help the book sing. Highest recommendation.

absolutely gorgeous collection of photos taken of Tokyo in the middle of the night, vibrant and surreal. the photographer's background as a game designer (which he acknowledges as an ever-present inspiration) is clear in his choices, and he offers insight to his thoughts and process as he was taking these photos. he mentions Blade Runner a lot, but that feeling is obvious in the photos and environment even without his stated fascination. the contrast between modernity and tradition is captured so well (and he notes this, too) as is the cinematic feel he aims for.

beautiful and thought-provoking.

Very cool photobook if you like the Cyberpunk / Blade Runner aesthetic. If you've been to Japan you will probably get nostalgic as well. My only gripe is that it might be a little bit too much of the same thing. Roughly half of the pictures are heavily edited scenes of Tokyo in the rain with pronounced neon lights.

So beautiful! That's it: that's the review. Okay, well, the photos of Tokyo at night are gorgeous, and the book itself is very high quality, showing them off at their best. I want to sink into this book and live in it.

An okay book, that could have been stronger with a tighter edit to lose the repetition and with less photo manipulation. The author has a good feel for color, even if this style of photography is not really my cup of tea.

*shorter english version below*

For one book, I was his hostage.
A very happy and mesmerized hostage.

I love Japan. But Tokyo not so much (I'm so much more in love with the country side). Unless I saw a few pictures by one of my favorite british YouTube artists living in Japan (see links above). And as my favorite canadian YT Vloger in Japan raved about it in her last Holiday Gift Guide (link above), I had to buy it! I simply L O V E bright colourfull lights on black ground (big cities at night are so wonderfull <3). So, this book was made for me. And I am very glad that I bought it. I will look througt it an few times more, I'm sure <3

At everyone who is mesmerized by the cover: Go on and buy it!

It's 03:51 am right now, no translating anymore, I need to go to bed. Goodnight (:

After following Liam's Instagram account for quite some time, I really wanted to have this book and it is finally here. While the photos look great on a smartphone, when you view them at a bigger size, it makes you want to inspect them much more carefully.

Although I have never been to Japan (but I want to), Tokyo wouldn't be the most important stop on my itinerary as a tourist, because I prefer nature to big, crowded cities . However, I am interested in the cyberpunk aesthetic and I like taking pictures in the rain, so from this point of view it would be a very important stop.

I hate it when I finish a book so fast, but this is one book I will certainly "read" many times.

Though I have visited some other cities that give off cyberpunk vibes (Bangkok, Singapore, Taipei), I want to mention another great city that is on my radar - Seoul. Here there is another photographer/youtuber/instagrammer I follow, who creates beautiful cyberpunk images. His name is Noe Alonzo (noealz/noealzii). He launched "Seoul: Into the night"about 5 months ago, and I think this is the next photography book that I will buy.

Beautiful photographs and artwork. I loved the steampunk, neon vibes that were inspired by video games.

What I really enjoyed:
- the author’s voice and we went on this photographic journey with him. It was really cool to see how he learned and improved his craft overtime. I also learned a lot about Japanese culture and of Tokyo itself!
- I love the use of warm, vivid colors with cool colors. This made the images really POP!
- I love the emphasis that beauty can be found in the little things. Wong’s perspective and vision is really impressive.
- it was cool at the end that he shared how some of his photographs/art came to be.
- weirdly too, I loved the thickness of the paper and that some photographs were fold-out. Fun! The only downside was some of the images that took two pages were a bit wonky/cut-off with the book crease.

Looking forward to more of Wong’s work!

Beautiful photobook! I had used photography by Liam Wong as wallpapers for a while before learning it was by him. If you have spent time browsing photos online of rainy nighttime Tokyo, you have probably seen his work as well. I don't generally buy artbooks/photobooks but I loved his work and wanted to have it physically! If you have an interest in Tokyo, Cyberpunk, street photography, or just visually pleasing pictures, check this out! Or at the very least look up some of his work online!

This photo album is so exciting that I don't know what to say after finishing it.

*

A beautiful and immersive dive into night life in Tokyo. The purple/blue/orange palette is gorgeous and soothing, and the photographer's notes help give a sense of his mindset as he was shooting various specific images or digitally altering them. It's a brief read with lots to look at, and some of the images become a bit repetitive after awhile, but all the same I found it very enjoyable.

Liam Wong is my favorite photographer of Tokyo. His vision is anime city, cyber punk, neon lights that go on and on, alleyways, umbrellas in the rain, trains, lanterns... those photogenic details that make the city a favorite of photographers. His photographs are dreamscapes. Timeless. At first glance there is something of Wong Kar-wai. Otherworldly. A tour de force!

If you are a fan of Erwitt or of photography of those decades or of the 50mm lens, this is a book for you. Not as focused as his typical books, more a reminder that for any constantly-working photographer, there will be many great shots that, for one reason or another, never fit into a previous publication.

If you compare this book's photos to that of other expert urban photographers with similar styles like Masashi Wakui's, you will see that this book's photos are very amateurish. Liam Wong said he only started shooting with a DSLR in 2015, and his lack of experience really shows. This is the reason I am giving it 4 stars. His second book, "After Dark" is better in terms of composition and toning.
