A humorous and entertaining tale about a little girl and her pet sloth that imagines life at a much slower pace. From the duo behind If I Had a Dinosaur, Gabby Dawnay and Alex Barrow’s If I Had a Sleepy Sloth is a charming and imaginative tale about taking the time to slow down. Have you ever wondered what the best kind of pet is? It’s a sloth, of course! When a little girl imagines experiencing a slower pace of life, she can’t think of a better companion than a sleepy sloth. She could spend almost an entire day just taking a morning walk with her sloth. When the little girl introduces her sloth to her hairdresser, the hairdresser isn’t pleased to discover the moss and moths (ewww!) that live in its fur, but what does that matter when her sloth is a champion on the jungle gym and amazing at climbing trees because of its super gripping skills! With vibrant illustrations and playful rhymes, If I Had a Sleepy Sloth is a laugh- out-loud story that imagines having a sloth for a pet and provides a welcome alternative to the fast pace of modern life. Illustrated in color throughout
Mom's Review How could you not want to read a book with this cover? Regardless of the text, the illustrations are sure to be darling!
Well, the text and the illustrations are both winners in my book. First, the cuteness of the sloth and the happiness of this Madeline-like girl envelop the reader on every page. Furthermore, Easter eggs of the mouse and the bear and the dinosaur from Barrow and Dawnay's other books peek out at readers like a little love note to fans. T and I were both delighted to see familiar faces. Then T took it one step further and pointed out that the end paper is the little girl's wallpaper. Fans of Barrow's other books will fall in love with his work again.
The story itself wraps you up just as wonderfully as the pictures. The little girl waxes poetic on the joys of owning a sloth, from watching the flowers grow to seeing the sloth pee once a week (on the nasty lifeguard's head! ;) ). If I had a Sleepy Sloth is not just an ode to sloths, but an encouragement to slow your own pace and enjoy the beauty of what surrounds you.
Son's Review (Age: 5) It's if you a had a pet for a sloth, that's what you should expect. You'll have to have a hammock. You'll have to live in a treehouse so the sloth can have playtime. You'll have to peek when you play hide-and-seek because they have good camouflage. Sloths are slow, so you shouldn't have races.
That page where he pees on the man's head is my favorite. It is so funny!
There is the bear who wants to sing and the mouse who wants a house!

I swear my spirit animal is a Sloth and this little read is just way too cute and funny 🦥
The way that it is written and the rhyming, has you reading in a sing songy way and it’s just so much fun and I love how there are many sloth facts strewn throughout as you read along - it makes for such a fun read for all ages and the illustrations are super sweet and cute.
Little B loves her plush hanging Sloth that she received from her Auntie Felice and Uncle Nick and a copy of this book will be added to her bookshelf ❤️
I really love how this book engaged the reader from the start with a fill in the missing gap of the sentence by an illustrations that was lovely.
The book rhymed through and gave some really good basic information on a sloth and how they live. This book could be really helpful in contributing to writing a non-chronological report on sloths in a rainforest topic.
This playful fictional story is almost nonfiction in disguise with the number of fun facts embedded into the story. A little girl is imagining what she would do with the ultimate pet: a sloth. Filled with gentle humor, rhyming text, and silly illustrations this will be a hit as a read aloud. It definitely made me love sloths even more.
A charming and imaginative tale about taking the time to slow down. Kind of timely right? Filled with vibrant illustrations and playful rhymes, If I Had a Sleepy Sloth shows its readers that sometimes life is better when you go slow.
A fun book about a little girl wondering what life would be like with a pet sloth, embedded are facts about sloths. Nice illustrations and playful concept.
