First Run brings my two firefighting novels together under one cover with one change in structure. The third part of Seven Two has been dropped for reprint here although it remains part of the original Seven Two novel. That makes both short novels included in First Run pure firefighting narratives.
But "pure" means the stories are embedded in the political and social reality of both the past as in Seven Two and in the present as with Engine 10. But strong similarities exist across time. Rookie firefighters appear in both stories and the risks of the professional remain the same even as the equipment improves, because human ignorance and stupidity remains the same.
The critical importance of fire and othe emergency services therefore also remains as a stabilizing force that keeps communities from burning to the ground literally and metaphorically. No matter what the politics or the weather, when someone dials 9-1-1, firefighters respond.
