Joy Universe #1

I've Got This

Rate this book
Derek Bryer loves his life. His job as an assistant director at Joy Universe, the second-largest theme park complex on the planet, makes him indirectly responsible for bringing joy (pun intended) to millions of people. So what if none of his relationships are that close? Everyone he meets loves him.

Except Trav Jones. For some reason, the visiting Broadway performer would rather Derek just go away. He appreciates Derek’s work ethic, though, and after Trav steps up when Derek desperately needs someone to fill in for his sick staff, Derek seizes the chance to convince Trav he’s not such a bad guy.

Falling in love while distracted by a murder at the park, food poisoning, and colleagues placing bets on their relationship won’t be easy, but between the two of them and with the magic of Joy Universe, they’ve got this.

Louisa Masters

LOUISA MASTERS started reading romance much earlier than her mother thought she should. While other teenagers were sneaking out of the house, Louisa was sneaking romance novels in and working out how to read them without being discovered. She’s spent most of her life feeling sorry for people who don’t read, convinced that books are the solution to every problem. As an adult, she feeds her addiction in every spare second, only occasionally tearing herself away to do things like answer the phone and pay bills. She spent years trying to build a “sensible” career, working in bookstores, recruitment, resource management, administration, and as a travel agent, before finally conceding defeat and devoting herself to the world of romance novels. Louisa has a long list of places first discovered in books that she wants to visit, and every so often she overcomes her loathing of jet lag and takes a trip that charges her imagination. She lives in Melbourne, Australia, where she whines about the weather for most of the year while secretly admitting she’ll probably never move.

I knew from the start that I would love this book and oh God I did!

It’s warm, hilarious from time to time with two MC’s that are amazingly charmig and well fleshed out.
I loved the Joy universe. It was magical. As someone who’s spent countless summers working at an amusement park, I could totally connect to that part of the story.

I had some trouble connecting to the MC’s “talking” to the reader but eventually got around to liking that too. It’s almost like reading the MC’s diary.

I want more, no I need more from Trav and Derek. Please?

What I loved most about this book is that I genuinely felt like I was seeing the world through Derek's eyes. I love how you can feel exactly how high energy and fast paced his job is, and the genuine confusion about why someone would ever dislike him! Derek is pure golden retriever energy and I loved it.

Trav was prickly but again, in the chapters from his POV it was easy to feel like you were seeing things as if you were him. I love when an author can do that with their writing!

Also I now have a huge crush on Derek and Dimi because organisation and competence is definitely my kink 😂 Seriously, a good stationery collection and organisational system will make me weak at the knees - the only thing that makes a person more perfect to me is if they're also Ace, like to read and play the Sims 😂😂😂

Love this series so far!

3.5 stars Derek and Trav

Joy Universe has four theme parks, twenty-six resorts and three campgrounds, a shopping and entertainment village and Derek is the assistant director. Everyone likes Derek!
There is a murder. Beside this awful event, there are also sick dancers Derek has to hire dancers.
Trav is a dancer, a performer, but he doesn’t do lead roles, ever. And, he doesn’t like Derek!
When that was cleared Derek and Trav started a fast friendship, shared kisses, meals and a lot of talking time. Both busy, so al was fast between work.
Trav has limited time, he has to go back to New York.

A nice story with kind characters. When I look at the whole picture, it did go a lot about everything and less about Derek and Trav.
I waited and waited and finally at 60 percent there was something more. After that? Trav spends all his time at Derek’s home. It’s almost too good to be true. Still, it’s about a lot of things.
Those were not my things, sorry to say. When I put that apart I can say the writing style was good, the environments were original and it has a hea.

Interesting opener in this series

I had completely missed this series from Louisa until it came up when Derek appeared as a background side character in the Franklin University series.

As an opening book it does well to set the scene and give a grounding for what's coming next. I also liked that it had a completely random side plot that added drama without messing with the MCs relationship.

I liked Derek and Trav too, although Trav's aboutface on his instinctive reaction to Derek reminding him of his childhood bullies seemed a bit quickly reached.

That's my minor criticism, I very much enjoyed the rest of the narrative.

**2.5** stars

Derek Breyer is the director of one of the theme parks at Joy Universe, a park the author modeled after the infamous mouse park. He’s gorgeous, smart, personable, and career-driven. He also happens to be as nice as he looks, but when he meets the new dancer, direct from Broadway, Trav Jones takes an instant dislike to him. Derek seems too good to be true, and very much like the high school bullies Trav had to avoid in his teens.

When circumstances keep throwing them together, and Trav gives him a chance, Derek turns out to be the opposite of Trav’s original suppositions, and within a few weeks of dating and hanging out, they realize they are in love. Now a new problem arises: what happens after Derek’s contract expires midsummer?

The story was okay but, to be honest, the first person POV in present tense is something I really dislike. And to top it off, the author kept dropping asides from the character to the audience, i.e., me—the reader, and that totally turned me off and tuned me out. This happened more often toward the end of the story so by the last page I was happy to say goodbye to Joy Universe and its cast of characters.

The plot itself is interesting as a murder occurs at the beginning along with a major disaster that strikes much of the cast of performers and Derek has to hustle to keep it all contained. As the story unfolds, the murder brings negative publicity to the park and Derek faces the loss of the job that is a part of his life. He may also lose Trav if he can’t open up to him emotionally. All that was well and good, but those times when the character speaks directly to the reader? No, just no. I don’t only dislike that—I hate it. So overall, though the romance was sweet, it was pretty much insta-love, the sex was off-page so those who like fade to black will be happy, and the situation is resolved enough at the end that all parties are happy.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.5 stars

I can honestly say I’ve never read a book that takes place in a theme park. When I saw the blurb, I was intrigued. I enjoy unique stories, and a theme park seems pretty unique. I did find this book to be a somewhat cute and even funny distraction from the real world. I was in a different place. Giant theme parks are known for shutting out all the sights and sounds of the city and bringing their guests a wonderful experience. Luisa Masters writes this nicely. I was caught up in the descriptions and could picture the park and all that goes along with it.

Derek and Trav are pretty well fleshed out. There’s a balance between their personal lives and their work lives. Their feelings are real — the stress, the tension, and the road to their budding relationship. However, there’s opportunity for some humor and a few distractions. The men come to life, and I think I’d like to be friends with them. I like them, but there were occasions when I didn’t necessarily feel invested in their coupledom. I didn’t feel true attraction. It’s not a constant feeling, though, and they make up for it toward the end.

Cute and sweet, if a bit more lightweight than I was hoping for. It's maybe 3.5 stars, really, but I can't quite bring myself to round up to 4 when that would put it in a class with lots of books that I enjoyed more.

The love story here is sweet, and the premise is pretty fun. Basically, my issues with the book are:

1. It seems weird for a book to start with the discovery of a gruesome murder and then to never have stakes higher than "can these two lovebirds make it work?" The murder is merely an inconvenience - and honestly, not a very big one. Neither of our protagonists is ever in any danger. I don't mean just physical danger, but literally even in danger of getting in trouble. Derek worries about his job after the murder happens at his park, but because he's so incredibly dedicated and great at his work, everyone - even his supposedly mean boss - falls all over themselves to reassure him that it's not his fault and everything will be fine and he's still the best. Which, honestly, is kind of nice to read, in a very feel-good way, but not exactly exciting.

2. The characters are sometimes weirdly overcommunicative. I don't mean that they overshare emotionally - although sometimes they kind of do. More like they have unrealistic-seeming conversations that feel like just a way to get information across to the reader.

3. I'm not sure I love how the characters seem to be openly talking to the reader. Occasionally, they apologize for sounding overly dramatic, or say something to the effect of "Do you know X? It was like that." It's sort of cute, but also kind of pulled me out of the story. (And don't apologize for being dramatic! I love drama!)

This didn't bother me, but I did guess that the author, unlike her characters, was not American. (Was unsurprised to see in the end notes that she's Australian.) There were just a couple of speech patterns that read to me like not quite something an American would likely say, like using "veg" for vegetables. Not a problem, just an observation.

In case it's useful for anyone to know: this book seems like it's going to be steamier than it is. There is one almost-sex-scene that really seems like it's going to go there, but then it fades to black very early. Other than that, while there are vague allusions to sex, we never see the characters do more than kiss.

2.75 stars rounded up

I liked the writing, and the setting was interesting which made me able to finish it. But as a romance, I thought this was lacking. It's too much "talked not shown" and sometimes it was even glossed over by a paragraph (like six weeks has passed, they had dates that happened off pages, etc.).

Most of this story seems focusing on Joy and its "problem" and how the staffs worked hard to keep it going after problems coming to it... like a murder (yes, murder!)

I hated this. It's bloated, non-sensical and as sexy as a visit to the dentist. We have a Gary Stu who has a insta-love attraction to a bit of an asshole dude who is emotionally stunted and as dramatic as a teenager. They have very little connection or chemistry. The murder sub-plot makes no sense.

Every once in a while, a book comes along that is so enjoyable that I just want to have access to billboards around the world so that I can shout to everyone riding by: READ THIS BOOK! YOU’LL LOVE IT!

When I stop to think about the millions of readers out there, however, I realize that not everyone will love this book as much as I do. (But they should. Just kidding, sort of.)

So maybe I should amend my statement to be something like, “If you like the kinds of books I do, you’ll adore this book.”

But really, what’s not to like?

Charismatic Derek Bryers, an assistant director at Joy Universe, the second-largest theme park complex in the world (think second to the Disney empire), is having an exceptionally miserable day. First, a woman has brutally murdered her husband in a cabin in the part of the park he runs. Then he finds out almost all the entertainers in his part of the park have suffered food poisoning from a celebration off-site.

Derek is nothing if not organized, so he jumps into action. Readers get everything they need to know about his dedication to his job, his expert and kind handling of employees and coworkers as well as guests, and his quick thinking when others in charge are floundering.

He can’t do anything about the murder except give the police whatever they need to get their job done—which granted isn’t much. But he can work to solve the park’s entertainment crisis by drawing on all the available talent in the area, both professional and amateur.

Into Derek’s life dances Trev Jones, who unlike just about everyone else in the vicinity at first reacts negatively to Derek’s stunning good looks and affability in the face of disaster. His antipathy stuns Derek who has a good handle on how charming he is and how to use it to his advantage.

Although they start off on the wrong foot, it’s only a question of ironing out the misunderstanding, which author Masters handle right away without drawing it out. With that done, the story becomes a charming and unusual (because it’s so often not done) story about how to completely different men can realistically come together and make their relationship work.

A wonderful cast of supporting characters give the story flesh and blood, many of which are just begging for their own romances. Fortunately, this book is billed as the first of a series.

I fell in love with Derek and Trev and think every other reader will too. If the rest of the Joy Universe books are as beautifully written as I’ve Got This, author Masters will rightly amass many new readers and those of us who already enjoy her work will be very happy campers.

It's set in a fictional theme park, and it starts out with a murder having been committed in one of the rooms. I was surprised because I though it was a contemporary, but I like crime/murder mysteries so I just rolled with it. But then .... it jumped in to high gear. The lead character was on it. Like, seriously. He had everything handled. In the best possible way. As you hope it would be handled in real life. Like life is the most important thing instead of money. I know it was probably too perfect, but I'm reading fiction for a reason so I loved it.

Then it naturally slides into the contemporary I thought it was. Everything is working for me. It's an interesting look behind the scenes of a place like that, the characters are fun, and the romance is cute. Turns out that the trouble in the beginning was just something that happened and the point of it was to show how good Derek was at his job. Okay by me.

And then, BAM .... everything lands at once. As much as I liked it before ... here is where it shines. I was already impressed with how Trav's backstory issues were handled. Derek's storyline was just as personally him in every way. Of all the ways things could have handled the chaos, the author picked the absolute right path.

I adored this. It had me up at six am reading with the lights out so I didn't wake my hubby up.

I loved the set-up of who Derek is. I love the meet-cute. And I especially loved Trav's first reaction.

I've worked in the corporate world. And I've known people like Derek. So, this was an especially fun read for me.

There's intrigue. Romance. Character development. And just a lot of hilarious moments.

For me, the side characters and the Joy Universe, itself, filled in a rich story.

5 stars. Brilliantly done.

Actually this book had potential. Though I wasn't familiar with the writing, I had no problem following the story.
But the too much telling is never my trope, though there was murder mystery which I usually like.
I had no trouble liking Derek, but Trav was too judgmental for my liking.
It felt dragged, maybe it was because the telling. Like I dunno, the author didn't seemed okay to show and let the reader having a little imagination. All served on a silver plate.
I still have two books in this series, let's see.

Throughly enjoyed

I won't say I was coerced but encouraged to finally dip my toes into this author's work by my newly joined book club. I'm extremely impressed. It's hard to write a book that's consistently in first person but breaks that fourth wall and Louisa Masters mastered it perfectly. I got a little bogged down in the loop of emotional diatribe but overall the story was fun with a few unexpected turns and twists, and I won't think twice about picking up another of this author's works.

Trav and Derek don’t start off on the right foot but as they begin talking the romance blossoms. Joy Universe is a great setting for what will be a continuing series of sweet stories. I look forward to reading more.

Louisa Masters is a new to me author and after reading the blurb (theme park and a murder) I was intrigued. While this read was cute and fit the whole theme park (think Disney) vibe, the murder was really not part of the story. The characters were likable, sweet together. The steamy parts between the MC's Derek and Trav happen off page which is not my preference. Other than lagging a bit in the middle, all in all a cute read.

I really liked Derek and Trav's story.

Derek was hilarious at times and such a lovely if stunted guy.
I really liked Trav as well, he was focused and secure in himself but growing along the story.

I loved their interaction and how organic their relationship evolves despite or because of all the ups and downs going on around them.

It was a lovely story and I really enjoyed the writing style, especially Derek's point of view.

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.

This book has been edited and tightened up, following being released from the previous publisher.

I enjoyed this, I really did!

I will admit, I had an old copy that I started to read ages ago, but never finished it. Something IS different about this copy to that, but I have no idea what!

It’s a warm and fuzzies, too stinking cute kinda book that just wiles away a couple hours, and you can forget about the laundry and the cleaning, and just fall into the Joy Universe!

I must admit, at first, for some reason, I thought that the Joy Universe was an ADULT place to be, you know? And I couldn’t place dancers in that world, not for the life of me! But all becomes clear when Derek starts to do his thing, dealing with a murder on site and an attack of food poisoning that decimates his dance troop!

Derek is a big ole teddy bear, that has a work smile I would be so proud of, but I loved that Trav can see right through that false smile, that work face Derek puts on. Loved that Trav could bring a real smile out of him, just by looking his way.

I understood Trav’s. . .not hatred, more a strong dislike of the image Derek puts across. When explained why he has that reaction, it makes a lot more sense.

The murder thing takes a twist, and I didn’t see it going that way. So I liked that.

Some sexy on screen time, some not. Some deep emotional bits, some a much lighter feeling comes at you. Just enough of everything, to make it interesting.

I liked this book, a LOT. But for one thing.

First person, present tense AND both Derek and Trav have a say. Maybe that’s why I didn’t finish it before, but I’ve made a decision to give a book a couple of chapters, even if it IS written in my least favourite way, and I’m glad I did.

Not a difficult or hard read, just what I needed at this point in time 😊

4 good solid stars

3.5 stars - I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

This is a fun, sexy read. The relationship that builds between a theme park executive and a Broadway star starts slowly and a little bit awkwardly but soon becomes something special. The characters are warm and engaging and I loved the ‘behind the scenes at Disney’ moments as Derek manages Joy Universe.

As I share Trav’s aversion to life’s perfect people, I loved his growly first response to Derek. To be honest, Derek had already rubbed me the wrong way by being far too happy on his morning commute and I loved his complete confusion over Trav’s reaction. Derek remains far too perfect throughout the story and like Trav, it took me a while to believe his endless bonhomme cheer is genuine. Derek is a little too good for my tastes and there are moments where he almost feels like a plastic caricature of himself. Trav is much more likeable - probably because his insecurities are closer to the surface and I love the way he makes situations awkward.

I like Derek and Trav’s connection and I love the sexual tension that builds between them. There are a few moments where we start to get to know them properly, but I’m not sure they ever completely came alive for me. The pacing in this story doesn’t quite work for me. I loved the explosive start but the middle slows into a story of corporate politics and meetings that became quite tedious. Similarly, the start of Trav and Derek’s relationship is fun and exciting but it slides into routine a little bit too quickly.

Overall, this is an entertaining story. I read it quickly and it left me smiling.

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]

I've Got This is the start of a new series by Louisa Masters. I wanted to love the story because the synopsis makes it sounds really interesting. However, I found myself bored many times throughout when the story got overly wordy. It's not a bad book but it just didn't do anything for me. Sometimes when a story is a little lacking in the plot it can catch me again in the intimate scenes. Derek and Trav would have had some fantastic intimate scene but sadly they quickly faded to black. With decent characters who break the fourth wall at times and a unique setting, I've Got This could have been great but unfortunately it fell flat.

Oh dear.
After reading Mr Romance, in the Franklin U series, I thought I’d found a new author. I really enjoyed that book and it featured the JU universe so I was looking forward to this book and series.
After the first 20% or so, the book just became boring. Far too much ‘tell’ and not enough ‘show’ and heaven save us from Trav and his teenager-like ability to jump to conclusions no grown adult would jump to. The characters’ emotional journey is unbelievable and is resolved far too early.
DNF- time of death 72%
2/5 is being generous because the first 20% of the book is OK

This was my first book by this author and it was a cute read.

The setting of the book was a great idea. The murder was a good plot to the book. I liked both Trav and Derek. Very cute couple and sweet guys.

I wished I saw more of their relationship develop in the beginning and at the end. I felt like there was more focus on the amusement park and how perfect of a boss Derek is.

Overall a enjoyable read.

Very sweet romance set in a theme park resort, Derek and Trav don’t get off to the best of starts but things soon turn around.

I really like all the characters in this book, there is no antagonist which is nice. There’s a lot of things going on in the Joy Universe but none of them really jeopardise the budding romance between Derek and Trav. They are super cute together but all their steamy moments happen off page so if you are looking for a bit of heat you won’t read it here.

Behind the scenes of the land where dreams come true

This was a really enjoyable book! It goes completely against what it feels like it will turn into and instead of being a mystery book it is instead a book about two men who love their work, the odd minutiae of that work itself, and building a relationship that is fulfilling and caring while still being devoted to those jobs. It was interesting and deeply delved into the emotions of figuring all this out, while also throwing a couple of curveballs that really tested the relationships.

Everything starts off on an odd note as we meet Derek, who absolutely loved his job as a park manager and then has about the worst work day of his life. There is a murder, which is crazy, and a staff crisis of food poisoning. Down half his staff and dealing with police it seems like Derek should be miserable and snappish, but his professional persona is charming, open, and problem solving. He works well and efficiently and in this meets Trav as he replaces his missing staff. It seems that the two who is get on well. Both are attracted and they match well in little ways, but that charming personality actually immediately turns Trav off and they start off rather standoffish than anything. It takes a few more good turns for Trav to realize he made a very incorrect snap judgement and give the two of them a chance at a relationship.

With the murder it feels like the book is going to become a whole murder mystery thing, with Derek needing to help out the police and figure things out. Nope, not at all. In a away the murder is just a blip, more of an issue for the park as a story device than the focus of the story. This was a really fascinating to have it approached, because though the murder itself is horrible, it was interesting to see it from the side that doesn't deal with that at all. Instead this was dealing with keeping a beloved theme park just as magical despite this unfortunate circumstance, and making sure that guests were happy and fulfilled. It didn't so much downplay the murder of dismiss it but showed hominid for those involved but not and what it takes to move past that moment. It wasn't heartless or callous and the work did focus on money but also on keeping magic in people's lives which was really rather sweet.

The focus on Trav and Derek's relationship came in from a different angle just like the rest of the story. This was an unexpected pairing as these two men had jobs that were so diff but equally important and would eventually pull them apart. It gave the relationship an initial feel of a fling even as it built into more than that. Rather than focusing on trying to fix that eventuality the whole time, or focus on their sexual chemistry, it focuses on their emotional connection. This story brings up to expected/unexpected situations where emotional support is huge. These two men get to figure out how to be there and support each other, something so important at the core of any relationship. It was not easy and it was different for each man, but it worked out in such a great way and really made their relationship far more real than it would have been otherwise.

A really great read that promises an intriguing series after!

This was precious. I love how even when Derek was down he wasn’t out. When things seem bad he just soldiers on and keeps swimming. I didn’t like how he shut down his emotions at times because that is how he grew up. I loved that Trav helped him learn to open up and let him in.

It was fun to see Derek try to get to know Trav especially after Trav blew him off and wasn’t really nice to him but indifferent when first meeting him. Trav had issues in the past that had him jdge Derek by his cover and it took a bit for him to give Derek a chance. Once he did, wow we get to really see who Trav is and watch Derek help him overcome his past and show him he is great and awesome no matter what. He helped his confidence in his abilities and being in the spotlight. He helped him see that he is more than he thinks and is awesome.

Trav helps Derek learn to open up and let go. Taught him to let someone in and lean on someone. Derek learns to not shoulder all his problems himself but allow someone to help him and support him. Derek goes through a lot in this book but he does it with grace and kindness. He doesn’t treat anyone horribly but as equals and with respect. He takes things as they come and figures things out as they happen. He is proactive and reactive when needed. He is kind and thoughtful, smart and gentle. And his attraction for Trav leaps off the page. You can tell he is flummoxed about how Trav was towards him when they first meet and is determined to change that. So when Trav gives him a chance you jump for joy and get excited. The first date has you on edge hoping that these two hit it off because they are each other’s lobster as Phoebe would say.

The romance was sweet and sexy. I love how they helped each other grow and gain perspective on things. How even when things got tough they didn’t give up but found a way to power on and navigate through those tough moments and come out stronger as individuals and a couple. How they supported and respected one another. How they were there with uncodtional love and support for one another no matter what.

The story is sweet, precious and just a wonderful read. You fall in love with Trav and Derek and how they are with one another and with others. Especially Derek and how he truly does care for those who works for them and wants to see them succeed. Trav and how he learns to let go of the past and let his talents shine through. Such a great story of love, friendship, letting go and letting someone in.

I can only give this story 4 stars. It is a well written love story that takes place at the second largest amusement park in the country. The concept is a good one, but the characters are just mediocre. This writer in my opinion based these characters on stereotypes and not actual people. I don’t care if it’s a story involving gays, lesbians or heterosexuals but don’t be so blatant. I don’t think the LGBT community is this outlandish and it’s rude to portray them this way. For instance, our main character is the Assistant Director of this section of the park. He is good looking, well dressed and well liked. However, he constantly tells people how good he is and how hard he works to make people like him. When someone acts like they don’t care for him he gets all defensive. I don’t believe this is realistic.

The story starts out with a crisis and Derek rushes to the scene. It messes up his whole schedule at the park. Seems his assistant does all the work, he just looks nice, and tells Dimi what he wants and Dimi jumps. At least, he acknowledges that he needs to promote Dimi. A second crisis occurs, and they now have no actors for the shows for the next couple of days. They scramble to bring in actors from the other parks and the show in Joyville Village.

Along comes Trav from the Joyville Village show. As soon as Derek sees him, he wants him. However, Trav has had a bad history with the good looking, well-dressed jock types in high school and wants nothing to do with Derek. Problem- stereotyping, maybe, Trav is a dancer so he is automatically gay and someone for Derek to hit on. Not necessarily! When he snaps at Derek and walks away, Derek spends the next hours and days trying to figure out why he is hated by Trav. Afterall, “I work so hard at making people love me.”

Once we get back to the storyline, it’s a good story. It’s too bad I couldn’t enjoy it fully.
