I not only read this book, I wrote it! I'd be honored if you'd shelve it on your to-read list and, of course, if you'd read and review it when the book releases in March 2020.

I wrote "With All Your Heart" for anyone who feels divided, stuck, or joyless in life, perhaps even as if they're going through the motions of religion or Christianity. I have myself been there and have been struck and changed by an understanding of the kingdom of God and my place in it. I want to show you through this book what I've learned.

"With All Your Heart" acts as a sort of heart check-up, a guide to rooting out those subtle misplaced allegiances that keep us from wholeheartedness and, thus, joy.

I hope you'll read it and find what I myself have discovered: Jesus doesn't just ask for our blind allegiance; he gives us his perfect allegiance in return.

I absolutely loved this book, as it helped me think deeply about where I set my hope and affections. Too often, my allegiance is towards things that are not worthy of my affections. This book does a great job of heart surgery: showing me where my heart is sick, common ailments we are inclined to pursue, but the end is the best part. I thought it was so beautiful to see a picture of a better place, with a better me, pursuing a better end: King Jesus! It gets me excited for heaven and all it will entail. She saved the best for last. I loved it and it is a wonder-filled book.

This book feels particularly salient in these times, as I think about all the allegiances that I have to my job, my ministry and my relationships and coping mechanisms that I run to in anxiety, comfort, control, escape. I love the way Scripture is incorporated throughout the book and her questions specifically at the end of the false kings section. She bridges the gap well of giving practical applications while still focusing on the heart of the issue with the truth of the gospel.

I need to reread this book. My concentration was limited due to illness but even with that said, this is a very good book. Saturated in gospel truth and sound biblical wisdom the author shows how our hearts are so often given to allegiances other than where our allegiance should be - to our true king and saviour, Jesus. The author honestly shares her own struggles with which I could truely relate, which made the book so much richer for me. Jesus is continually shown to be far far better than those things that would claim our allegiance, giving motivation and reason to cast off that which keeps us from fully following our King and reorients our hearts and eyes back to Jesus. A book that I would happily recommend to anyone.

The message of this book is so counter-cultural - that the joy of experiencing God's blessings is found in submitting to the rule and reign of King Jesus. Christine shares vulnerably about the ways in which she's given her allegiance to false kings - kings who have no power to deliver on their promises and who only take life, rather than giving it. Through her vulnerability, Christine gently but boldly served as a mirror for my own heart, helping me to see the areas in which I'm giving my allegiance to things like anxiety, control, and isolation. Christine offers practices to fight these allegiances in ways that invite community into the fight. I can't wait to discuss this book with others around me!

In this pandemic, I have been brought back to this book time and again! Hoover delves deeply into scripture and the pull of our hearts to lesser loves. In this time when the idols of my heart have been laid bare, I have been grateful for the framework and truth this book has brought to my life.
I would recommend this to small groups, Bible teachers, and those seeking to align their loves to God.

Every Christian who’s serious about their walk with the Lord should read this book

In I John, after John tells us that God is love and describes His love for us, he very lovingly cautions us in the very last verse: “Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.”

In her new book, “With All Your Heart: Living Joyfully Through Allegiance to King Jesus,” Christine Hoover shows us how we as believers need to ask the Lord to show us (and then remove) any idols that may be replacing Him as our first love.

Published by Baker Books, Hoover’s 240-page book is broken down into three parts and ultimately reveals the false kings of anxiety, image, control, escape, isolation, approval, and comfort (Part Two), as we take spiritual inventory of our hearts before the Lord. (She includes a question section after each chapter that would be perfect for individual or group study.)

Using biblical examples and present-day instances from her own life, Hoover explains how we too often run to these false gods for answers to life’s questions, issues and problems, instead of to our Lord, who is the Way, the Truth and the Life – many times without even realizing it or acknowledging it.

“Will we say no to all other kings, including self, because we trust in God alone and the King He’s set over us?” she writes (page 56). “Or will we concoct some mix of God and a safe, tangible plan B?”

We can too often live our entire Christians lives with divided hearts and loyalties toward the Lord – especially with our time, talents, and thought life – to the point where we can make idols out of our family, friendships, career, money and success, all with very little, if any, notice – if we aren’t allowing the Lord to perform spiritual heart surgery to remove those idols.

Ultimately, it is about King Jesus ruling and reigning in our hearts and souls every single minute of every day, instead of ourselves and our daily circumstances – or anything else keeping us from fully surrendering everything to Him.

Overall, despite the text being too repetitive, prosy, with some grammatical issues, Hoover’s book is about truly examining our loyalty and devotion to God. In the end, it’s a wonderful book about giving the Lord His rightful place in our hearts. I highly recommend it.

If there is something that the Lord has been working in my heart about and opening my eyes to lately, as a result of this pandemic and corresponding quarantine, it is that I have idols in my heart that I have been giving daily allegiance to, without fully realizing it. I have been putting my focus on and finding my fulfillment from things like movie nights with friends, Saturday morning writing times at the coffee shop, date nights out, etc. to make myself feel like I'm having a good week or can get through a hard day.

And, wouldn't you know it, just as I am having this reality brought front and center to the forefront of my mind, Christine Hoover's brand new book, "With All Your Heart: Living Joyfully Through Allegiance to King Jesus" releases and is sent to me for review! God is in the details, my friend!

This book truly could not have launched at a more perfect time as so many of us are having our allegiance to idols (i.e. the idols of comfort, me-time, trips to the library or zoo, ease, and more) shaken and found to be wanting. We are being forced, in this time, to reevaluate where our joy and fulfillment come from (and where they should come from instead!). This book will walk you through this very season in such an eye-opening and life-giving way!

"With All Your Heart" is divided up into three main sections. The first sets out to explain for us how it is that Jesus is King, why He alone deserves our allegiance, and what His character is like. This emphasis on His character is such a gift, as it will inspire you to truly shift your allegiance to Him when otherwise it might feel especially hard to do so.

The second part of the book goes through and discusses many of the common idols we give false allegiance to on a daily basis - things such as anxiety, image, control, isolation, escape, approval, and comfort. 

The third part of the book presents to us the unshakable kingdom we have to live in light of now and look forward to in eternity. The truth is that the false objects of our allegiance that we commonly give ourselves to are simply not able to provide us with truly lasting joy, fulfillment, or peace. Only allegiance to King Jesus is able to do that. And Christine Hoover is here to show you the way! I highly recommend this book, and encourage you to take Christine up on her offer to help you walk through this journey!

Have you given God all of your heart? In With All Your Heart, Christine Hoover calls you to live joyfully through allegiance to King Jesus.

In just over 200 pages, Hoover explains how Christianity is about allegiance, and we have a king to love. In the first part of the book, she shows how our hearts are constantly hungry and we must seek to fill them with King Jesus. Repentance and seeking the kingdom go hand in hand. It unites us with Christ and continues on toward Christ likeness. Hoover writes kindly while still challenging the idols in your life.

Heart Idols

The second part of the book is the biggest, and it exposes the false kings we are prone to follow. I was most challenged by the chapter on control. Hoover connects control with power, and we see a drive for this with the constant encouragement to pursue our dreams. While we are challenged to do “big things“ for the kingdom, what we often mean is “being seen for what we do, known for what we’ve built, and accumulating a large platform that feeds our cult of celebrity.” Hoover herself admits feeling this pull as an author: “Pursuing my dreams can easily be synonymous with control.”

We can counter these desires with rest and hiding in the power of God. We must identify our real responsibilities and steward them with diligence. We can use whatever influence we have been given for the sake of others, and we remember that we are merely servants in the kingdom of our great and glorious God.

God Remains Faithful

Other chapters in the second part of the book tackle anxiety, image, escape, isolation, and comfort. What I most appreciate is how honest Hoover is with her personal examples. Hoover shares how she had taken her idol of approval with her into her marriage, and she shares how a desire to be labeled as an author had also become an idol. She warns us to seek the approval of God and fear him only. And we must remember that even when our hearts are unfaithful to him, God remains faithful to us.

This book will cut to your heart and bind you back up with the love of Christ. Hoover ends by telling us that we are a part of the already-not-yet kingdom of God. I am resolved to do true kingdom work now, running the race with perseverance. The kingdom is here but there’s still work to be done, as we eagerly await and prepare for the return of our humble servant king.

Allegiance. Have you ever given much thought about this word? For me, when I hear it my mind of course goes to the Pledge of Allegiance, as I'm sure holds true for many others... but when was the last time we truly thought about what it really means? And more importantly, where our allegiances truly lie?

Per the Oxford dictionary, allegiance is defined as, 'loyalty or commitment of a subordinate to a superior or of an individual to a group or cause'. As Christians, reading that of course we want to believe that our allegiance lies with God and His kingdom. That is our goal, that is what we strive for most... but are our lives reflecting that...or are false kings getting in the way and taking our attention? In her newest book Christine Hoover addresses that issue in a practical way that I feel all Christians can relate to. She breaks down some of the false kinds that can sneak in and distract our allegiance such as anxiety, approval, comfort, image, escape, power, accumulation, self-sufficiency, supremacy and shame. How many of us see ourselves and our struggles among that list? Most of us at one point or another likely do...and the author is among us too. I always much prefer books that are coming from people who DO understand the struggles and don't pretend to be perfect, as that makes them so much more relatable. This book will help us take a look at our hearts, and give us practical ideas to help keep our minds on the kingdom... and not at these false kings.

I will also add that I am often apprehensive about books that take on the topic of anxiety, as some Christians don't differentiate from worry to anxiety as a medical condition and as such can send a negative message to Christians struggling with the latter to believe that they just are not faithful enough. I did appreciate that in the notes in the back, she DID note that there is a difference and that this particular chapter referred to the more general anxiety (interchangeable with worry), and encouraged those dealing with physiological anxiety to consult a doctor.

Overall, an interesting read that many Christians can benefit from.

I have found that you can always count on Christine Hoover to provide a hard-hitting message with her books - and her newest release from BakerBooks is no exception. “With All Your Heart: Living Joyfully Through Allegiance to King Jesus” is a powerful book that compels readers to answer this question: If our hearts are made for allegiance to a king and kingdom (which they are) who and what are we consciously and unconsciously pledging our loyalty to? Who and what are we truly living for, with the thoughts and words and actions of our daily lives? It’s a profound question, and one that challenged and convicted me simultaneously.

“With All Your Heart” is divided into three sections. The first section introduces the subject of allegiance to a king and kingdom, and the hope and peace we will find if we align with the One True King.

The second section discusses many of the false kings we find in the world, including Anxiety, Image, Control, Escape, Isolation, Approval, and more. I was especially convicted by the chapter on Escape, as this is a challenge in my life and I felt Christine’s discussion to be very insightful and thought-provoking. I plan to re-read this chapter soon, and with God’s help to become stronger in not letting my allegiance be with Escape.

The third section of the book is the shortest, but it brings together everything Christine discussed before. As she says, “We do not need to see or understand all that God is doing on our hardest days. We just need to know that God is behind this and in this, and that he will make it beautiful in time. We need to know we will one day live and move and have our being in God’s unshakable kingdom.”

If your heart is up for a challenge, and you are pondering if your deepest allegiances are founded on the Truth, I highly recommend reading “With All Your Heart”. It isn’t an easy book to read, and I suggest taking your time with it, but in the end it is so worth it. It changed my thinking, and now it is up to me to allow God to change my life.

How times have we said or heard someone say, “I love you with all my heart.” Those that profess usually truly believe they do, but do they? There are actions and outward signs if an “all my heart” love is the real deal. This is true also with a Christian’s love of God. Children of God make this declaration often, but again is it true? This book helps us look within and see if the Lord does have all our heart. I personally feel this is very important and much needed if we are to serve Him that does love us with all His heart.
It is easy in our day and time to give bits and pieces (be they large or small) of our hearts to other things. There are so many to choose from, pulling at our emotions, affections, time and attention. We may not even realize we are doing it. Ms. Hoover calls them “allegiances” I see them as other gods, anything that comes between us and God. She presents these in a way I had never thought of before. Anxiety and Isolation, two the author names, made me realize I had never looked at them in this light. These were eye openers to me! As the author points out they are all part of the kingdom of “self”.
Once we become the Lord’s nothing can take His place or we will be robbed of our joy and leave us in despair and frustration. If one is not careful they will be caught up in the endless circle of pursuing them to meet our needs that only God can.
Ms. Hoover’s style of writing was easy to relate to and touched my heart. The questions at the end of each chapter gave me a time to reflect and take a good look at myself.
I like books that cause me to dig deep within and point out any blind spots in my Christian life that need correcting. It is not a book you will want to read quickly, but work through and absorb all it has to teach. I found it helpful, but also especially relevant for the times we are facing.

This book stabbed me in a few uncomfortable places. It's the most fun to read books that just agree with how you are living life; it's less easy, though more worthwhile to read books that challenge you and convict you. This book did that. Am I bowing to King Jesus or to self-allegiance? Do I have false allegiances that I am clinging to because it's too scary to give them up? Why is it so hard to give full allegiance to Jesus and to trust Him to meet all my needs.

Christine tackles some common areas of self-allegiance: control, escape, approval, comfort, and more. But can't you see in those four how this book might be applicable? I like approval, I certainly like to be comfortable. If I can be in control, I can feel a sense of security that I can handle what life is bringing my way. But none of these things leave room for Jesus to be the King on the throne of my heart and so they must go if I truly want to love God and serve Him with all my heart.

"Tears may flow in lament and trust before God, but they also may flow because we desperately crave what we believe others are withholding from us that we think will fulfill us." Ouch!! That's what I wrote behind this quote when I wrote it in my book journal. Tears of lament are very different from tears of grasping.

"The lie of anxiety is that God is not capable of all-presence, but we ourselves are; that God won't provide but we can provide for ourselves." In my sane moments, this is so ridiculous, but how often do I live like this?

This book was really good and I highly recommend it. At the end of every chapter is a practical section of questions, ideas, and ways to work through the chapter to help you see the areas you need to change. I didn't take the time to go through those slowly, but I think they would be extremely beneficial to better evaluating my life.

In our world, allegiance seems to shift with the person in power. “Not my candidate” is often our tube around election time. But Jesus as the King of Kings demands our full allegiance.

Hoover masterfully lays out her book with a opening section dedicated to our King and his Kingdom. She then transitions to how our kingdom of self seeks allegiance as well. She then begins naming chapter after chapter King Anxiety, King Image, King Control, King Escape, King Isolation, King Approval, King Comfort. With each of these false kinds she clearly lays out the lies each of these lead is to believe about God as we serve them. Then she maya’s out how Jesus is the better King over each is these. The practicing the kingdom of God questions are thorough, pointed, yet gentle. You can tell Christine is preaching to herself as she writes this book!

She then ends with a call to cling to Jesus’ unshakeable kingdom and to serve him wholeheartedly. She gently calls us to serve the King while also reminding us that we cannot earn his love! We serve Him because He is the Master, not us! Plain and simple!

I highly recommend this book to any women who is trying to wrap her mind around how to follow Jesus in a world that tells her to just follow her heart, who feels the pull of these common false kings when all she really wants is to pledge her full allegiance to Jesus alone!

Given Jesus's consistent and frequent talk about the Kingdom of God, I've had a nagging sense that I need to know that paradigm better/more and identify how it ought to impact my life. With All Your Heart: Living Joyfully Through Allegiance to King Jesus provides great help in doing just that. And more than just exploring and explaining the Kingdom of God and "allegiance to King Jesus," the book also brings to light alternate kingdoms we're tempted to serve and how such temptations are best addressed.

Christine Hoover's voice throughout the book is both deeply knowledgable about her subject and candid about her own experience and struggles in living with the Kingdom-mindedness we're called to. Transparent and wise, she's a kind and helpful guide on this critical topic.

With All Your Heart by Christine Hoover started out being hard to understand, but as I continued to read, I could understand the points that she was making. Christine talks about different things that can take our focus off God if we are not careful.

In one section, Christine talks about things such as anxiety, control, isolation, and comfort. She describes these things as “false kings.” When I read the chapter of anxiety, I could really relate to Christine’s writing. In this chapter she writes, “Anxiety is not productive or powerful to change anything. That’s what Jesus says. When we give our minds over to it, however, it feels as if just by thinking about a circumstance we can change it, or that if we worry about the future enough, we can affect or prevent misfortune.”

At the end of each chapter, there is a section with questions that help readers to think back on what they have read. There are also related questions that help you evaluate whether or not you are dealing with the topic that is being discussed.

As I’m reading the through the Bible, over and over I’m reminded that God cares about our hearts - bottom line. It’s all that he’s wanted from the start. This was such a refreshing reminder of what it should look like to fully hand over our hearts, or allegiances, to God.

Christine Hoover not only writes beautifully (seriously - what a gift!) but she writes with such intention for her readers to fully pledge their hearts to the Lord. She starts by sharing why God wants our hearts and why it’s good for us, and then goes through many of the other things that we often pledge ourselves to that are less than and never ultimately fulfilling.

Since I’ve started reading ‘With All Your Heart’ I find myself thinking throughout the day how I can turn away from the things that tempt our hearts and instead turn towards the One who gives me everything I need. It’s a great book that I’d recommend to any woman seeking to deepen their daily commitment to the Lord.

"With All Your Heart" by Christine Hoover is a non fiction Christian book. Christine is a pastor's wife. She is the author of By Faith podcast. She has written for the Gospel Coalition. Her website is www.christinehoover.net . Christine focused about our need to have our whole allegiance to Jesus. We need our focus to be with Him first and not looking to other things to fill our need for Him. We look to many things in the world to make us happy. Jesus is supposed to be first in our lives. I enjoyed "With All Your Heart" by Christine Hoover. This was a very encouraging and inspiring read. Hoover encouraged me to work harder on my Christian walk and to strive to put my allegiance fully in King Jesus.

The book is broken up into 3 parts: A King and a Kingdom, False Kings, and An Unshakeable Kingdom. I really enjoyed the 2nd part the best. Hoover delved deeply into these topics: Anxiety, Image, Control, Escape, Isolation, Approval, and Comfort. I like how she specially addressed these topics. Several of these are ones I struggle with almost daily, and her words of wisdom really helped me in these areas.

I highly recommend this book to all women out there. I believe Hoover will help you deepen your Christian walk and to fully put your allegiance in King Jesus.

I have enjoyed other books by Christine Hoover and knew I'd love this one. What I wasn't expecting was how I would be challenged and convicted in areas of struggle as I consider who is ruling my heart in so many areas of my life. I appreciated the topics of conversation Christine engaged in- what rules our hearts in the area of image, control, and approval. I saw so many areas I have failed to acknowledge the rule of Jesus. She didn't leave me there in seeing my failure. Again and again, I was drawn to the faithfulness and goodness of God in His provision of Jesus and the gospel which gives me hope and the ability to surrender each of the areas I struggle with to Him. I love Christine's relatable writing and her encouragement in this book.

I really enjoyed this book and it spoke deeply to my heart. The book centers around removing idols in your life and making room for Jesus to rule. When you think of idols, you might think of things like alcohol, movie stars, food, etc. This book goes so much deeper than just tangible things and into intangible things like comfort, anxiety, control, and isolation. Many of these idols I had no clue I struggled with. I was so glad to go through this (at times painful!) process and begin uprooting these things in my own life.

The author has such a great writing style, combining personal stories with practical truths. Everything is rooted in Scripture and is rock solid. I highly recommend this book for any Christian!

While studying the book of Matthew, I read this book and have found it such a perfect complement for me to process Jesus’ teaching in his Sermon on the Mount. I appreciate the author’s personal testimonies throughout and honesty with allegiances that compete with her wholehearted devotion to Christ her King. I could relate with what she shares of her personal struggles, doubts, and insecurities as well as desire for faithfulness. This book encouraged me greatly and I’m hoping to read it a second time with a friend, so that we can talk through each chapter together and also benefit from taking time to respond to the thought-provoking, heart-targeting questions provided at the end of each chapter.

I picked up this book because I really appreciate Christine Hoover's books, and I wasn't disappointed. The first half lays down a foundation for the topic she is addressing, and that did take a while for me to get through, but the last half was very practical. I think this book would be especially helpful for someone struggling to understand what the kingdom of God is or for someone who constantly finds their affections distracted by things other than God. I always appreciate when an author opens up my perspective to see things that I wouldn't have noticed before, and the topics Christine addresses as stealing our allegiance to God definitely did that for me.

I love anything Christine Hoover writes - even though her books are often so hard to read because they are so convicting! I wanted to highlight every single word of With All Your Heart. It is a book that really presses at your soul to consider where your allegiance lies - with Jesus, or with things of this world. What I particularly loved about this book was that it is a great combination of personal experience, Biblical truth, and questions to make you think. This is definitely a book I will return to time and time again.

Recently, I have been reading books by Bates, McKnight, Wright, etc., that focused on being a child of the king ( a follower, disciple, etc.) is more than that just saying that you believe something. The word that I have come to like the best is the word "Allegiance." We owe the king our allegiance, and everything that involves. Hoover has written a very practical book about the practice of allegiance, and how we go about it, and what might hinder us from being what we ought to be. I listened to this book on Audible, and really enjoyed it; and would recommend it to anyone that wants to gets serious about being a disciple.

I’m so hesitant to write a review because I know I can’t do this wonderful book justice. Every once in a while, you read a book that changes you forever. You close it knowing you’ll never be the same. This was one of those precious experiences for me. The Holy Spirit used it to grow my faith, free me from anxiety, and draw me closer to Jesus. I will treasure my heavily-underlined copy forever and have been recommending it to everyone who will listen. Thank you, Christine, for this beautiful, intelligent, thoughtful, honest, edifying book. What a gift.

With All Your Heart by Christine Hoover is a new Christian non-fiction book. This book was encouraging to read over these past few weeks with all of the uncertainty and fear that we are faced with. The author shares personal experiences from her own life to show how we can focus on God as our King instead of our anxiety and things that bring us down. The book had Scripture verses to support how we can focus on the one true King instead of all the distractions of our world. Thanks to Baker Books for this review copy.

This book is FULL of though-provoking truths. I kept finding more to underline on each page. Though I really loved "From Good to Grace," this is probably my favorite book by Christine Hoover. She digs into everything from why social media causes us challenges to why approval, anxiety, and desire for comfort hold us captive. I really enjoyed this book and will probably read it again! It's not just a great read, it's dense with truths we all need to be regularly reminded of!

The author of this book is, apparently, very, very similar to me. A lot of bits from the first few chapters especially could have been lifted right from my own journal entries, and just in general this corresponded perfectly with some things I've been working through recently. This was really helpful to where I am right now, and I'm glad I read it when I did.
