For Jack Shepherd, tiger shapeshifter and former rebel leader, nothing in life has prepared him for this dead end. Dead End, Florida, to be exact.
When swarms of treasure hunters descend on Dead End in search of legendary pirate Captain Jean Lafitte's fabled lost gold, chaos crashes down on the normally quiet town. When the only treasure chests found have corpses instead of coins, Jack has to spring into action. Because sometimes it takes a tiger’s eye to see the truth.
Tess Callahan, who owns a pawn shop in the strangest town in Florida, is barely over the last dead bodies on her doorstep when her new private investigator neighbor asks for her help again.
But it's her town, and she'll take on anybody to protect it. Even treasure hunters, vampire slayers, and the ghost of a certain French pirate who still thinks he's in charge.
Welcome to Dead End, Florida, where ghosts can get jaywalking tickets too. And welcome to the Tiger's Eye Mysteries!
Beware! This novel contains: magic, shape shifters, humor, vampires, a taxidermied alligator, pirate treasure, ghosts, buried jewels, gold, gunshots, bad singing, delicious baked goods, terrible parking, the FBI, swamp commandos, tigers, special agents, flirting, belly laughs, comedy, humor, and a pawn shop.
ALYSSA DAY is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of romantasy, paranormal romance, and mystery novels whose books have sold more than a million copies and been translated into many languages, although she’s holding out for Klingon. She has lived with and battled chronic depression for her entire life and finally admitted it to her family—and the world—in 2014. Life is better now, because depression lies and tells us we’re alone.
We’re not.
Alyssa (as Alesia Holliday) is a diehard Buckeye from The Ohio State University who graduated summa cum laude from Capital University Law School in Ohio and practiced as a trial lawyer for several years before coming to her senses and letting the voices in her head loose on paper. She has lived all over the country and all over the world, including the Philippines, Turkey, and Japan.
When she’s not traveling to new adventures, she lives in Florida with her Navy Guy husband, spends time with her two amazing kids, and rescues dogs.
Paranormal cozy mystery. 4th (counting the intro novella) book in the Tiger’s Eye Mystery series. Best read as part of the series. 120 pages of paranormal hi-jinx with a Pirate ghost, a tiger shifter and a pawn shop in Dead End Florida. Tess is amusing as always with her love of Jack, donuts, and selling the unusual in her pawn shop. It’s a hoot when the buses stop in. I look forward to more of this wacky little bit of paranormal in Florida.
This is third in a series, and like most UF, the stories and characters have a prolonged arc. So reading in order is generally a good idea. It certainly is with this one.
Again, if you've read the others, you know what to expect. In a good way. Except that the slow-burn romance is maybe a little too slow. I mean, they just don't have any reason to be hesitating at this point and going weeks without actually having the promised date is getting silly.
I'm not sure if I'm just less in the mood with this one, if the romance frustrated me, or if the plot just wasn't that interesting, but this was a weak three star read, for me. At least I was expecting it to be really short, this time, so that wasn't a disappointment.
A note about Chaste: No sexy bits, pretty much at all. There was a kiss or two, but nothing great.
Evil Eye by Alyssa Day continues the Tiger's Eye mystery series set in Dead End, Florida. I really enjoy this mystery series with all the different paranormal characters and the humorous banter. Ms. Day manages to make the small community of Dead End seem normal as all of the residents take paranormal and magical activities in stride each day. I'm so glad that Ms. Day decided to continue with the series.
To be honest, I didn't recall ANYTHING from the previous books!! Luckily, this one is only a novella length and things go pretty quick. Sure, I only remember the names Tess and Jack, but I don't find it a big trouble to finish the story. Basically, it involves ghost pirate, dead bodies, missing treasures/gold, and alligators!!
I’ve been binge reading the Tiger’s Eye Mysteries and really enjoying them. This is a fun and light Cozy Mystery meets Urban Fantasy, Cozy UF if you will.
Jack and Tess have a problem on their hands; a ghostly pirate and his booty. I’m always amazed at how much this author can pack into a story and not make it feel over the top. And if it does, it’s because it’s meant to feel that way. I mean, tiger shifter, pirate ghost, hidden treasure…it should feel ridiculous, but it works!
This is the third book and Tess and Jack still haven’t had their promised date. Things just keep happening. If you haven’t been following along, Tess can see someone’s death when she touches them. She lives through it in that moment, so she avoids touching people. Jack is a tiger shifter, and he was the leader of the Rebellion (Warriors of Poseidon series-excellent PNR). Now he’s back home in Dead End, FL. A small town with well, a pirate ghost. And unfortunately, there’s murder afoot. Jack and Tess once more jump into action to save their small town, and maybe finally get that date.
This series is my favorite Cozy UF out there. It’s a series made up of short novels, or longish novellas, depending on your viewpoint. This series is perfect for when you want a short, upbeat, quirky, yet still action-packed story. I”m also really glad to see Jack getting his own series, even if Tess is the main narrator. I really like Tess. She may be my favorite Alyssa Day heroine yet, and I’m so glad she and Jack are together.
The first book is often free or on a good sale, so if you’re looking at reading this book, I’d say like most UF, start at the beginning.
Evil Eye is the third title in Ms. Day’s fun Tiger’s Eye Mystery series. The books are shared via the first person POV of pawn shop owner, Tess Callahan, and feature a wide variety of paranormal and human characters who live in the unique town of Dead End, FL. The author tosses in lots of humor and adventure, with a dash of romance, around a central mystery. While I wouldn’t classify the stories “cozy” they are light and fun.
Evil Eye opens with a ghost pirate causing problems in Tess’s shop and quickly moves to a double homicide. Tess and her tiger shifter crush, Jack, are in the middle of things. At least Dead End now has a competent, decent sheriff who they trust to work on the case. The story is short and moves quickly from point A to point Z, and I feel like maybe a couple steps were skipped in between. Tess basically solves the mystery off-page, so when the reveal happens, it sort of feels like a Scooby Doo ending. Nevertheless, it’s still a fun adventure, and I love the continuing developments between Tess and Jack.
This is another fantastic story in the Tiger’s Eye mysteries. This time the ghost of a pirate wants his gold and doesn’t care about the murders. Solving them is fun for us to read and so much more.
Third in the Tiger's Eye Mystery cozy paranormal mystery series and revolving around Tess Callahan and Jack Shepherd. The story is based in Florida.
My Take There’s greed and then there’s GREED. That Shelley has quite the entrepreneurial soul, lol. It never hurts to capitalize with this sort of friendly greed. On the other hand, there’s an evil kind of greed that won’t stop at anything.
Day is using first person protagonist point-of-view from Tess’ perspective. Since she’s at the center of most of the action, it does make sense.
Dead End is a small town with plenty of characters, most are even supportive of each other. Tess certainly has a lot of friends in many walks of life (or death).
Jack brings his own conflicts, although they are fairly minor. Even though he is originally from Dead End, some of the townsfolk have their suspicions. He certainly does not like the Fae. They have a bad attitude about shifters. And it turns out that “Tommy” is “one of the most cutthroat, bloodthirsty Fae of the High Court”.
If you need a good laugh (or twenty), you’ll love this cozy paranormal mystery.
The Story Tess is barely over the last dead bodies on her doorstep when her new private investigator neighbor asks for her help again.
It’s buried treasure that’s found, arghh, and the greed comes out to kill.
The Characters Tess Callahan owns a pawn shop in the strangest town in Florida. The cat Tess rescued was named for Lieutenant Uhura, a.k.a. Lou. Tess has a gift; she can sometimes see how a person is going to die. She now owns and runs Dead End Pawn with her secret weapon, Eleanor Wolf, as a part-time employee.
Shelley is Tess’ “new” sister, adopted by Uncle Mike and Aunt Ruby, the relatives who raised Tess. Tess’ maternal grandmother is a banshee (Private Eye, 2).
Jack Shepherd, a tiger shapeshifter and former rebel leader from Day's Warriors of Poseidon series, has returned to Dead End and opened a private detective office, Tiger’s Eye Investigations. His late uncle Jeremiah had left his pawn shop to Jack and Tess.
Dead End, Florida, is . . . . . . “even ghosts get jaywalking tickets”. It is, however, a safe place for all supernaturals, especially with the special charter that predates the founding of the US. Mellie runs the bakery. Mrs Meriwether’s Coca-Cola cake is a treasure. Mr Arroyo, a vampire, has a plumbing business. Beau’s Diner is the only eat-in restaurant in town. It’s also gossip central. Former mayor, Lorraine, has waitressed at Beau’s for about 50 years. Dave Wolf, Eleanor’s son and Jack’s childhood best friend, built the attached office for Jack’s new business. Molly Chen is Tess’ best friend and has a band, Scarlett’s Letters. Tess reckons it’s a good thing that Molly’s parents are lawyers. Veronica Dunstan-Smythe, a.k.a. Dice, is her anger-issued bass player. Melinda Mako is the queen of cutthroat defense lawyers.
Sheriff Susan Gonzalez is a friend of Tess’. Andrew Kelly is her chief deputy. The disgusting Doc Ike is the only physician in town and the town coroner.
The Swamp Commandos are . . . . . . ex-military from various Special Forces team who have grouped together in the swamp. The boys have recently opened an airboat rides company — they’ve named it Swamp Commando Airboat Rides. They’ve already turned a profit. One of them, Lucky Tremaine, wants to ask Molly out. Dallas and Austin Fox are twins and former Army Rangers who are seriously good with computers. The Darken is a dark web for magic users.
John Luke Arnold (he's been dating Dice) and his brother, Peter, own a gator farm, Happy Time Gator Town.
Tommy Turner, a.k.a. Tomas Turaoin who is a High Court Fae via Ireland, of Tommy’s Traveling Treasure Trackers is in town. Elaine, a.k.a. Ela’han, is the producer of his show and a witch. Her six leprechauns are captive to her demands. The Fae High Council shows up.
Pierre Arneaux is a ghost protecting his buried treasure; in life, he’d been a privateer for King Louis XIV. Dr Linda Parrish is an expert on Spanish doubloons.
Matthew is one of the tourists visiting Dead End Pawn. Yasmine had sold the bowl to Tess. It was in 1995 that the world found out about shifters, vampires, and the Fae. Felix had been the local toymaker (Private Eye). Oskar had been his son. Sheriff Lawless is the former sheriff (Dead Eye, 1).
The Cover and Title The cover is nighttime dark with a deep purple blue sky and a full moon bracketed by the silhouette of a tree that is part of a black silhouette in the background. The ground is a hilly yellow green with a vague tree trunk on the left, a lily-pad surfaced pond in the front with green vines and plants on its far edge. In the center of this cartoon graphic the blond Lucky, in black leather and holding a long-handled shovel, and the red-haired Tess are crouched over a pirate chest — skull included. Behind Tess is Jack in his tiger form. At the very top is an info blurb in white with the author’s name immediately below it in a light violet. The title is under the chest in a white, stressed font. Below that, in yellow, is the series info.
The title could refer to the greed, the Evil Eye cast upon that pirate treasure.
We first met Jack Shepard in the Warriors of Poseidon series in which he was on of my favourite characters a tiger shifter and one of the leaders in the resistance. Unfortunately in that series he fell in love with a woman who loved another so at the end of the series was left unfulfilled. So it's great to see this spin off series devoted entirely to Jack as he moves to Florida to take over a pawn shop he's inherited (book one) on arrival he met Tess his business partner and it's safe to say Jack felt a spark of interest. Now it's book four and Tess is still holding Jack at arms length, why, she couldn't tell you, they have still not managed a date, in part due to Tess dragging her feet and also due to all the crazy things which have begun to happen in Dead End, Florida since Jacks arrival. This series is quite light hearted with lots of humor, they are murder mysteries but have hardly any violence and are easily solved but the characters are great and as the author has said the series will run about 12 books I look forward to more fun with Jack iand Tess n the swamps of Florida
I have loved Jack Shepard for a very long time, and I love the chemistry between him and Tess Callahan. Add to that, I love the plots and side characters with all the Tiger’s Eye books. This one was just a wonderful, and it was so great to be back in this world. As always, there is fun, mystery, and supernatural elements to keep you entertained from start to finish, and I was sad when I realized the book was about to end. And that is the only thing I would have different: the length of the book; I wish it were longer! I highly recommend this one, and I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
2019 bk. 259 - In this book Tess and Jack encounter a pirate ghost (a many times great grandfather of acquaintances of Tess), Fae, Russian assassins, and leprechauns. It was a quick and fun read. I'm growing to like the characters. In one of the books, the postscripts describe Jack as the main character. That does have me puzzled as Tess is the speaker and Jack seems to come and go. Otherwise, if you need light entertainment of the paranormal type - this is a fun series. There are supposed to be ten titles in the full set when it is finished so there are seven more quirky stories left.
I give it half a star for having one of those hilarious misadventure sort of scenes that the h starred in through no fault of her own. Too many authors have the h (or H) do something incredibly stewpid to end up in that position.
So basically, a witch enslaved a high fae, a bunch of leprechauns, and a few others to hunt gold. The gold just happened to be on the property of a descendent of the privateer it belonged to. The ghost enlisted our h and Jack (and his former military buddies) to fix things. They did.
I seriously love Tess and Jack, I love Dead End and I want more, longer stories and lots more from these guys, there is just so much potential with this series.
It's a quirky, funny action packed full of supernatural awesomeness and just a truly fun read.
Pirate treasure, dead pirate ghosts, dead bodies it's all happening in Dead End and it looks like Tess and Jack have another magical mystery to solve.
After Charlaine Harris closed up shop in Sookie Stackhouse, there really wasn't any real supernatural series that wasn't too bleak, graphic or perhaps not sharp enough writing that has compared. Now with Alyssa Day's series it is just the right blend of naivety and humor to enjoy the impossible world of supernaturals.
Short, novella type stories but very good. I am thoroughly enjoying this series and love that I can read one in an evening. Best of all the story keeps moving, yet doesn't feel hurried. On to the next one!
Jack and Tess are perfect together. Amusing as they solve the current murder, with the help of their swamp friends. Pirates and gators make for an interesting combination, especially when buried treasure is involved.
Oh Jack and Tess. On another adventure. They are so much fun to read. The characters, the story, the in between. I love this series. The twists and sarcasims. So much fun! Can't wait until the next.
I love Tess and Jack! They have got to be two of my favorite characters!!! The mystery is awesome and I laughed out loud so much!! I would recommend reading these in order, just for back story purposes. I will be reading these again!
Evil Eye is a fun cozy mystery with paranormal characters that will make you smile with the flip of each page. Tess and Jack take on a ghostly pirate and some more fleshly villains in a search for gold and treasure. A terrific addition to the series.
Evil Eye was way too short and ended very abruptly. The end was too easily resolved to be satisfying. Still, I love Tess and Jack, so it was fun to catch up with them.
I love it! You just know it is going to be one of those you can't put down from just the first few parts. You see Tess walking into the pawn shop & can almost feel her "Why me?" attitude when she sees the pirate's ghost talking to her stuffed alligator, Fluffy. She looks & says "It isn't even Monday." He notices her & decides to check her out. She puts a stop to that fast which shocks him, she can see him! He introduces himself as Captain Pierre Arneaux. She wants to know why he's in her shop. Jack comes in & would like to know the same why as well. Pierre senses something about Jack, pulls his ghost sword against him. He will defend this wench! Jack is not human! Both are surprised Jack can see him. Jack says shifter usually can. Both of them make him understand it wouldn't do much good anyway, after they get him to put the sword away. Again they want to know why he's there. He isn't sure, something drew him. While they are trying to figure it out he is a little miffed about being ignored. It is unusual. He usually gets some kind of reaction! Running & screaming or stared at, not just shoved off to the side & forgotten! Tess finally thinks about the doubloons her sister, Shelley, finds out in the swamp & brings in. She goes to get them & asks if any of them are his? He picks the one that had been brought in by John Luke Arnold had brought in. It was not yet valued yet. Tess had sent pictures to Dr. Parrish, a specialist in this sort of thing, she had helped her several times. Tess was waiting for her assessment on the value of the coin. Pierre demands her to return his coin. They both point out he's dead. He reaches down & somehow makes the coin like ghostly like him & takes it. Tess is wondering how she is going to explain that. As Jack Goes back to his office Lucky comes in to get his guitar. He tries to talk to Tess about lunch & gets a little fluster mixing it up. She gets confused thinking he is trying to ask her out & he quickly straightens it out. While that gets settled Jack, Lucky & Tess go to Beau's to get lunch. She finds out Lucky wants her to help him set up a date with her musician friend Molly. As they are about to eat Molly runs in to get Jack & Tess. Her friend & bass player, Dice is being arrested for the murder of John Luke Arnold! He was found at the alligator farm he & his brother owns. Dice found the body, he was stabbed with shards of her guitar. Dice has anger management problems & has been known to hit people with her guitars, it doesn't look good. She was supposed to meet him there last night but decided to go to Miami Beach instead. When she got back here, he was dead. The Sherriff sees them & wants to know why they are there. She gets a call while trying to make them leave & tell Jack & Lucky they are temporarily hired to help keep people out of her crime scene. As Tess & Molly get off to the side some Rvs pull up & Tommy Turner from Tommy's Traveling Treasure Trackers tv show steps out. He tries to say he has been invited to see the treasure. He tries to talk them into letting them stay. Jack tells them he is a Fae & is using a glamour spell to charm them. It helps to snap them out of it & make him leave. Tess begins to wonder where John's brother Peter is. The Sherriff is getting them to leave & has Jack looking around to see what he can find. They hear gunshots & run to the area. Tess sees Captain Pierre standing next to a treasure chest that had been buried with 3 skeletons. Jack chased someone into the swamp. She ask Pierre if they were his friends. She has to stop & explain to everyone there that about Pierre. She says it's not a recent crime scene until he pipes up & tells her about a body in the treasure chest, getting blood all over his gold. She repeats that & wonders if it is Peter & he informs her it is a woman. The Sherriff, pulls on some gloves & to humor Tess goes over to the trunk & opens it to show her there is no body in it. When she opens it, she finds Dr. Parrish's body on top of the gold. Jack comes back to tell them that he lost the person he had been chasing. Tess turns to ask Pierre if he saw anything but he is gone. Tess had been on growing friendly bond with Dr. Parrish. She was sort of shook up. Jack stays to help the Sherriff while Lucky drives Tess & Molly back to the Pawn shop. On the way there Lucky & Molly begin comparing Peter Arnold's name & Pierre Arneaux's name are so alike with French. They pull in & Tess goes to her car, she is about to get in when he turns up again. He tells her she has to find out who killed his grandchild. She lets them know what he is saying. She tells him she can't interfere with the police. Pierre tells Tess if she doesn't find out what happened he will put the some of the bloody gold in he her shop & frame her for the murder. She tells him she will tell everyone how he threatened her, and repeats everything he said to Lucky & Molly. She gets him to leave & goes into the shop to work. Lucky takes Molly to bail Dice out of Jail. Tess goes to work cleaning up her shop. After she is done with a customer she goes into the back for a snack & to her shock she she sees the entire chest of bloody gold in the back room. Jack comes in the front door & starts to tell her the gold disappears. She shows him where it showed up. The Sherriff comes in before they have a chance to call her & tell her what happened. Tess explains to the Sherriff about what had happened & how the ghost had threatened her. When she had told him no, how she found the gold in the back room. The Sherriff takes the gold for evidence & leaves. Tess closes & they go home. Aunt Ruby, Uncle Mike & Shelley meet them at Tess's house for dinner. Shelley is celebrating winning first place in the history fair she was in. Jack pulls up after picking up all the meat from his house. After their dinner they leave, Jack tries to find out when Tess wants to have the date she promised him. He is staying over again until they catch who it was that killer John & Dr. Parrish. It is very late when Tommy Turner knocks on her door. He wants to know what Tess did with the gold. She tells him the Sherriff has it. Jack asks him what he did with six cases of peanut butter. Tommy tells him, his crew was hungry. Tess tells him to leave. She goes to sleep. The next day on the way to work she found out Tommy had been invited to get the gold & had signed papers & everything. She asked him about the peanut butter, something keeps poking her in the back of her mind about it. She keeps trying to figure out what it is but can't seem to find it. During the day, while they are telling Eleanor what is going on she tells them about the legend about the treasure. It seems there is supposed to be many chests of treasure buried under the gator pit. Jack & Tess decide they need to check this out. To do so they will need help from their swamp commando buddies. Tess goes to get Donuts & sees the Turner show rvs. She runs into the producer Elaine & they chat for a few minutes. Tess askes her somethings & the answers she is given tells right away that Elaine is lying to her. She leaves & hears from Molly. Peter has showed up, he has an alibi. Dice has remembered stopping at a gas station. There should be a receipt in her car somewhere, so she should have an alibi. Tess hears Jack come in. She informs him of all she has learned so far.
This one was just odd. I never really understood why the pirate ghost was around in the first place. He didn't even have a point, except maybe she just wanted to use him in her first sentence, so she kept him. MCs are still not dating, although there's a lot of kissing? And he comes to dinner all the time? And he sleeps (as a tiger) in her house a lot? If I had that trifecta I'd call it dating. Except, just how much does a tiger shed? Something that is totally bugging me, and is essentially irrelevant, is that the author obviously has no idea how to make pie. I'm all for Southern hospitality, and I liked how it was incorporated into her character, but the pie thing is confusing. Making 6 pies in one afternoon before dinner is an absurd amount of work, especially if it's all homemade. Plus, any custard pies will have to set first. (Read: Pecan Pie). I'm not saying I've never dug into a warm pecan pie before, but I am saying that no one just goes around whipping up pies because they're 'Southern' and that's what they 'do'. Not to mention the baking times. About 40 minutes all told for a Pecan pie, and that's just in the oven, 15 - 20 minutes for a pie shell before adding a chocolate cream filling. Anything else would have more baking time and if you're doing it right, you should really add in time you let the crust chill so that the fat is cold before baking. SOMEONE TAKE A CLASS BEFORE WRITING ABOUT PIE BECAUSE YOU'RE STRESSING ME OUT.
Bought this late tonight, and have just spent the last hour and a half devouring Evil Eye.
I love the characters that Day has created for this series. Tess and Jack are amazing. I love their snarky, yet sweet, relationship. The date still hasn’t happened, but they are such a great pair. The secondary characters like Lucky, Shelley, Eleanor, and Molly rock up, as well as Tess’s sweet aunt and uncle (who I adore).
The wildcards this time include a temperamental pirate ghost, who is not impressed when he’s being ignored, and a High Court Fae who is more trouble than he’s worth.
The murder mystery was fun, and I was so swept up in the mystery that I just flew through the story. When I got to the end I was delighted to find out that not only has the next book been announced, but even better is that Alyssa Day has stated that there will be at least a dozen books in this series! Can’t wait to get my hands on each and every one.
