Two Castaways. One Goal. Zero in common. Get lost in this inventive sci-fi graphic novel about an extraordinary friendship and an incredible journey home.

Like many late-21st-century teens, geeky 16-year-old Vess gets packed off to spend her summer at Space Camp--which is literally in space. Tragically, a shuttle accident sends her and the rest of the passengers careening toward a cold, frosty death among the stars. But when a gigantic, space-faring water bear miraculously rescues Vess and her beloved retro Discman, it's the beginning of an extraordinary friendship, all set to the nostalgic tunes of Vess's 1990s-heavy playlist.

Star Pig by Delilah S Dawson

Science fiction Graphic novel. Art by Francesco Gaston.
A teen on the way to space camp gets saved by a Tardigrade when the transport she’s on is destroyed. From one evil to the next, Vess and Theo find their way through space and trying to avoid probing by aliens. Not always successfully.

Typical teen centric thought process with little care for the rest of the crew being dead. Moving on....we can admit she is smart and has learned her history lessons, but I have to question her opinion that Theodore Roosevelt looked like a teddy bear slash pig.
It is funny that the galaxy is apparently obsessed with the U.S. 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. There certainly is plenty of material to pull from in those years.

It’s an engaging adventure with beautiful artwork. I don’t want to include spoilers, but will say the third guess was brilliantly thought out.

Vess is on her way to space camp when she's waylaid, meeting a giant space version of a tardigrade. Tardigrades are real microscopic creatures sometimes referred to as water bears. The two of them end up making first contact with alien creatures who are obsessed with earth culture. It's a cute all ages tale even if it features some iffy science from a science fiction author. (The whole beginning where space flight remarkably is treated just like flying in a normal commercial airline, including emergency procedures.) The art is very good with vibrant colors that pop across the page.

Received a review copy from IDW and NetGalley. All thoughts are my own and in no way influenced by the aforementioned.

This was pretty close to moving up to a four star review. I feel I have to give Dawson, and this my first exposure to her work, credit for originality here. And, new ideas, in any medium, feel like they are at a premium lately. Plus, I was drawn to the fact that she made use of space faring giant tardigrade, an idea I first encountered in Star Trek: Discovery.

Dawson uses the tardigarde well here. It is a fully formed, for a mini-series, character, in its own right. Vess, also undergoes some character development, and Dawson was able to achieve this because of the wise decision to limit the number of characters in the series.

Vess gets into some trouble, and she does not begin the story as your typical heroine. By the final issue (read as digital floppies), Vess has matured from the slightly flighty young woman the reader meets in issue one.

3.8 ⭐️ A car sized water pig and a sentient fungus alien? It’s a yes from me.

The humour in this was 10/10. If you’re looking for culture and science humour this is likely for you. I was almost wiped out by Keanu Reeves.

There’s not much to say. I wanted a light read to bring me out of a slump and this did exactly that. The art is really solid and it will leave you wanting a car sized water pig too.

It’s also pretty original, so many comics peddle stories I’ve read before and this was well thought out. There’s even factual sections at the end about the Israeli moon crash that scattered water pigs that’s really worth a read.

All in all I loved this and it had me laughing the whole way through.

Rep// MC has two mums, the water pig is possibly non binary (says ‘my gender is complicated’) The only kiss in this was WLM though.

TW’s listed below please skip if you don’t want spoilers.

Tw// vehicle crash (space ship, graphic), dead bodies (graphic, many), oxygen deprivation, non consensual scientific testing, scalpel and cutting shown on page, medical scenes, concussion, minor blood, head trauma, human/non human kiss.

Witty banter, beautiful art and a refreshing cast of characters. Theo the Tardigrade is adorable. Vess is a true daughter of science and approaches everything and everyone with childlike wonder and curiosity.

But like space, it feels empty. And I'm a little disappointed that it's filled to the brim with mostly American pop-culture references. America is not the world.

Star Pig by Delilah S. Dawson is my very first graphic novel, but hopefully not my last. I haven't read a lot of sci-fi type books or even watched sci-fi tv, so I'll admit that the cute pink tardigrade is what drew me to picking this story up. The adventure felt new and interesting, while the illustrations were impactful and vivid. My favorite parts were the back and forth banter between Vess and Theo. For those of you who enjoy a good graphic novel and space adventure, I think you'll enjoy Star Pig.

This was a super cute and funny graphic novel. In line with the obsession with all things American and pop culture in this universe, as Gretchen Wiener would say, this story was "so fetch!" Theo the tardigrade was my favorite character as were all the other aliens. The vibrant artwork and the slappy, fast-paced dialogue between the characters were most enjoyable. I hope a sequel is made because I need to know what happens next for Theo and Vess.

A couple of my favorite quips:

1. "Our studies indicate that 20th century Earth was phallocentric and worshipped white males. Is that not correct? Would you prefer a gown with Beyonce?"

2. "My gender is complicated, but you may continue calling me a dude . I assure you that I have not prurient interest in your genitals."

arc provided by the publisher and netgalley in exchange for an honest review

This one was super fun. I didn’t really have any idea what it was about the cover instantly caught my attention as did the title.

The art was beautiful. I loved that it was full of colour and that the aliens were drawn to look creepy. The plot was fun and engaging and honestly... kind of adorable. The fact that this ‘star pig’ creature swallowed the human to save them was cute and their developing friendship was as well.

I would love to read more about this human and their cute squishy alien friend!

A fun, splashy graphic novel that doesn't make a lot of sense but doesn't have to.

I feel like I'm almost not nerdy enough to fully appreciate this, but the premise, that the rest of the galaxy is unreasonably obsessed with American pop-culture is pretty funny. It was explored in interesting ways, and I think the best descriptor for this whole outing is "zany," which was fun. It was like a very small Guardians of the Galaxy with a female lead and a much gentler Drax.

The artwork was great, and I think the further adventures of Vess and Theo will be thoroughly entertaining.

Thank you netgalley for the arc.

This graphic novel was so funny. It’s light and colorful with lovable characters. The planet earth can not be visited by aliens so the galaxy beyond earth is obsessed with humans and everything earth, especially our music. So there are jokes about our music and our movie stars lol. It was great and funny. The star pig aka Theo reminds me of Sheldon from the Big Bang theory. I highly recommend.

To be completely transparent, I did receive an e-ARC of Star Pig, but because I am two-years behind, I read a final copy from my library.

This was.. something. I don't know what I expected -- probably not Keanu Reeves & talking gas, but here we are. Just read it. You might love it, you might hate it but either way, you'll definitely have a strange time.

I was unconvinced for the first half, but it eventually started to pay off.

It only gets 3 stars instead of 4 because sometimes the artist is creepy in the way he sexualizes the main character, who seems to be a teenager (young enough that her parents are sending her to space camp).

This reads like it was written by your Mom trying desperately to be "cool and hip with the young kids and their lingo." I cringed so hard I couldn't even finish it without risking serious physical injury to myself.

This is certainly an interesting read for both kids and adults. A 16-year old lucks out in a spaceship crash by getting swallowed by a giant tardigrade. Luckily the titular star pig is friendly enough to go about and it has some pretty nice abilities to communicate and go through. The ideas behind the numerous aliens as abstract as they come are always well and good. The 80s slang speaking cloud of spores was certainly good. The idea behind aliens liking something about Earth is always fascinating; even scientists think the planet serves as a potential vacation spot. Even then I'm actually a fan of the idea of Earth being a nature reserve of sorts. Maybe a system of laws prevents species from going onto the surface of the planet. Not that the Earth in this GN appears to appealing. From what people say, it seems people aren't much fans of their planet or the culture that ruined it either.

So what happens when Vess is flung into a universe where there are so many unknowns its overwhelming. Well giving answers about where humans fit aren't it as the last pieces suggest. For all the themes of pop culture and creativity being what makes Earth so appealing to someone, there are also things that don't fit quite right. Using shapeshifting cephalopods as an allegory for the cosmic horror unknowns by using familiarities to their advantage kind of defeats the point of those premises. I mean the events near the end look like they are guaranteed to need failsafes. I don't know but sometimes less really is more.

I received an advanced copy of Star Pig from Netgalley so that I could share my review with you!

Star Pig is a fascinating sci-fi/vintage graphic novel that follows one human girl’s adventures through space! After a trip to space camp goes wrong, Vess is left alone in with no one to turn to. That is, of course, until she meets her first ever alien, a Tarigrade “Space Pig” who rescues her from certain death. As the two journey through space, it become clear that they both are desperate to find their home worlds and that neither of them have a clue where those worlds might be. Fending off menacing aliens and learning the meaning of friendship are just two of the many things you can look forward to in Star Pig!

You can get your copy of Star Pig now from IDW Publishing!

Delilah S. Dawson wrote a fun and engaging story in Star Pig! This was an extremely quick read for me (I actually finished it in one sitting) and I immediately found myself immersed in the story. Possibly my favorite part about this book was the art style of Francesco Gaston! The characters were so crisp and well drawn that I often had to stop just to admire how they looked! The combination of art and story made this a fantastic read!

My Recommendation-
If you love funky graphic novels, Star Pig should definitely be on your list! The story has lots of pop-culture references interwoven with the space world, which were quite fun to read. If you need a short story to blaze through quickly, Star Pig would be a great quick read for you!

Ok, I really dug this one, it's light and fun and geeky, plus there's a giant tardigrade named Theo. It takes place in 2760 I think? Way in the future, anyway, and Vess has convinced her parents to let her go to space camp, literally a camp in space. On the way there, the ship is hit by an asteroid, and Vess is the only survivor, rescued by the aforementioned giant tardigrade. They're picked up by a sentient cloud of spores, who is a collector of Earth pop culture crap, and hilarity and shenanigans ensue. So much pop culture going on here, so many references, it's like hunting Pokemon- gotta catch 'em all! Basically, the rest of the universe is obsessed with Earth culture after humans started shooting trash into space in an effort to clean up the planet, and a live human could catch a high price on Galax-eBay (insert eyeroll here), and tardigrades are thought to hold the secret to immortality, so everyone's after Vess and Theo. The jokes are cheesy, the banter is slickly dorkish, and the future teen-slang is great fun. The artwork is gorgeous- bright neon/jewel tones, emotive facial expressions, lots of detail- just fabulous. Is this a deep story? No. This is wild ride action, and I'm cool with that, we're still getting our story set up, after all. Depth can come later, as our heroes try to find their way home.

Well, this was a surprise and no mistake. Forcedly brash cover with punky female character standing happily alongside her jumbo tardigrade? Nothing could go right, surely? But a heck of a lot did. There's invention here, there's wackiness for the sake of us enjoying it and not for the sake of wackiness, as so often is the case, and there's a sense of humour. I've seen better jokes than the universe being consumed with envy for 1980s and 1990s American culture, and I think some of the mock slang could have been better, but generally this read very well – and again, a lot better than I expected. I won't bother to summarise the plot – the situation is enough to be hooked by, and that's all on the cover. It was a little unsettling to think we were a gazillion galaxies away from ours only to have a shuttle ride around the solar system, but the sense of scale in this drama will evolve if we get a part two – which I'm already looking forward to. Definitely four stars.

A spaceship, full of teens from Earth on their way to Space Camp, gets pummeled by an asteroid, breaking the ship open and sending the teens sprawling into the deadly open space. One tech wiz teen named Vess gets swallowed by a giant pink space pig called a Tardigrade. A sweet, grotesque, and innocent creature who doesn't know at all what's going on, but wants to help. The two of them are quickly abducted by a slightly nefarious scavenger, who is a spore cloud and speaks in a strange mix of casual expressions. Together they must escape.

The story explores the idea of different species getting to know each other, and learning to work together. It's fun to see what the aliens imagine life on Earth to be like. The main character Vess is biracial, has anxiety, and experiences panic attacks throughout the story.

The bright, shiny action of Guardians of the Galaxy meets the absurdism of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Teens and adults will enjoy this fun sci-fi comic.

This was totally weird, modern-day teenage space opera with an absolutely adorable sidekick. I look forward to reading more.

Vess has finally convinced her moms to send her to space camp (in outer space), but en route the shuttle carrying the campers is cut in two. Vess is jettisoned into space only to find herself inside the belly of a giant tardigrade - a nearly indestructible creature that "speaks" telepathically. [Tardigrades are real creatures. Search for them; they are awesome.] Subsequent encounters with aliens - some more humanoid appearing than others - lead to wacky adventure as Vess tries to get her feet and she and Theo the tardigrade try to keep each other safe.

Oh, and it turns out everyone in space loves Earth, and especially American, pop culture, and there are so many great references from the Beatles to "yeet".

Star Pig is an intergalactic adventure featuring human teen Vess Singh-Rodriguez and 'space pig' Theo Tardigrade. The two had an unexpected meet-up when a sporadic cloud alien blasted Vess' spaceship while the teens were on their way to space camp and Vess is the survivor Theo was able to save.

From then an out-of-this-world friendship blooms as the two main characters venture with one ultimate goal: to go home to their planets safely and in one piece.

Things I love about this e-galley is that the illustrations are on point and each scene was depicted as if it was traced from real life. Noting that the setting is on space made it more interesting and all the alien interactions added flavor to the story. The writing is also top notch, the Earth references are relatable and most lines are hilarious. I enjoy the Keanu Reeves fascination and the Synthesizer.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read.

Vess is traveling through space to a space camp when her ship crashes. She is saved by a space pig, or a tardigrade, who sucks her into his body. Then, they are captured by an alien who collects things from earth. They come into contact with some other space creatures through the rest of the comic.

I went through so many different emotions while reading this graphic novel. Some parts were funny, like when they referenced earth songs that the aliens liked. Other parts were really gross, such as how the different aliens looked and behaved.

I had to look up a tardigrade after I read this book, because there were some fun facts about them at the end. They are a real creature, though only about 1mm in length in real life, not giant sized like in the book. They really look like a space pig, so that’s an appropriate name for them!

This was a great space graphic novel.

*Received via NetGalley for review*

I was really looking forward to this one - I loved Dawson's Sparrowhawk, and so was hoping for something along those lines. But while the vivid colors and wonderfully unique character design are there (a sentient cloud of spores! A mega-tardigrade!), and the plot is serviceable, the tone and the dialogue killed it for me. Everything read like a script someone had written, rather than organic speech ("You are doing me a frighten"? Really?). I appreciate that the authors tried to think ahead, linguistically, and some of it works, but most is it feels too try-hard.

And Vess's pants are very strangely colored, and kept making me think she was wearing very little.

*I received this book as an eARC from IDW Publishing via NetGalley. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*

This graphic novel begins with teens heading to Space Camp...IN SPACE! Something goes wrong and only Vess survives thanks to a giant tardigrade. This just starts the adventure in the stars. There are aliens, both humanoid and not. A whole bunch of fun pop culture references. And they make sense because it turns out everyone is completely obsessed with Earth.

This is a really fun story. I hope this is just the start of Vess's adventures. I give this book a 5/5.

This was a really beautifully drawn graphic novel and i liked the main character of Vess. The story was good in the first and third parts but it kind of lagged in the middle. I liked those parts but the plot was not that great overall. It was a little messy and could have been a little tighter than this. This was not a bad book but just needed a little editing.

This was not what I had expected, but delightful all the same.. I loved the premise of Earth having not made contact with alien species, but alien species knowing basically everything about them. Great illustrations, interesting and exciting premise and an ending that leaves me wondering and wanting more. What will they do now? Find a planet? Listen to music and roam? Find their way home?

A really good start!

All I can say is, I want my own Water Bear! Star Pig is a weird fun romp through space with one very fortunate and confused girl named Vess and the planet sized Water Bear who rescues her. Set this comic to your favorite 80's and 90's tunes and you are set for one fantastic space adventure. Vess is spunky with a good head on her shoulders and with her new alien best friend, she just might find her way home.
