We might be used to seeing the common homing pigeons in yards which are actually doves, but the species talked about in the book are smaller relatives and most are not able to fly freely as they are not native to our climate and are easy targets for predators. Doves must be kept in an aviary to enable the space needed to safely fly and house multiple individuals as they are social. This book is pretty good on describing everything you need to know about owning doves. The only problem is medication and food listed can be a problem and they should have listed actual product names you can buy in pet stores since the names they used are now only listed in the ingredients, not the product name.
